You’ll see the home screen when you turn on the
tablet or touch Home from a menu.
With a touch or a swipe you can see more home
screen panels, select apps and widgets, scroll though
lists, zoom in and out, and more. (See “Android on your
tablet” on page 5.)

Charge your tablet
Caution: Please read the battery use and safety text in
the important legal and safety information packaged
with your phone.
Tip: To save battery life, see “Battery tips” on page 30.
Power on & go

Power/Lock on the back
of your tablet to turn it on.

2Follow the screens to select a language and a
location service, then set the date and time.
3Touch Activate to activate your mobile service now
(if not already activated), or touch Skip to set up a
Wi-Fi connection.
Note: See the next section “Wi-Fi™ connect” for
Wi-Fi setup instructions.
4Follow the setup wizard to create or log in to your
Gmail account.
Record your Google account information for future
reference.

Note: If you have an existing Gmail account, your
contacts from that account are synced to your device.
Whenever you choose to select all contacts for the one
you want, your tablet shows every contact, in every
groups.
Wi-Fi™ connect
If you want to use a Wi-Fi network for even faster
Internet access, touch the Quick Settings Menu and
drag upward.
Touch Settings > Wireless & networks > Wi-Fi
settings. Then touch Wi-Fi to search for and connect to
wireless networks.

Sleep & wake up
To save your battery,
prevent accidental
touches. or when you
want to wipe smudges off
your touchscreen, put the
touchscreen to sleep by
pressing Power/Lock . To wake up the touchscreen,
just press Power/Lock again.
Lock screen
To lock the screen, press Power/Lock . or let the
screen time out (don’t press anything).
To unlock the screen, press Power/Lock . Then,
drag to the right.
Change volume
Press the volume keys
to adjust the volume.

Here are some tips on how to navigate around your
DROID XOOM by Motorola.
Touch
To choose an icon or
option, touch it.
Touch & hold
To open special options,
touch and hold an icon or
other item.

Drag
To scroll through a list or
move slowly, drag
across the touchscreen.
Tip: When you drag or
flick a list, a scroll bar
appears on the right.
Drag the scroll bar to
move the list to a letter
A-Z.
Flick
To scroll through a list or move quickly, flick across the
touchscreen (drag quickly and release).
Tip: When you flick a long list, touch the screen to stop
it from scrolling.
Zoom
Get a closer look at maps or web pages. To zoom in,
double-touch (tap twice, quickly) the screen. To zoom
out, double touch the screen again.
You can also zoom in or out by pinching your fingers
together or moving them apart on the screen.
Rotate the screen
In many apps, the touchscreen adjusts to display in
landscape mode when you turn the phone sideways.
Touch the Quick Settings Menu and drag upward, then
touch Settings > Display > Auto-rotate screen.

Home screen
The home screen gives you all your latest information
in one place.
Note: Your home screen might look a little different.
The home screen extends left and right to give you
more room for adding shortcuts, widgets, and more.

Navigation icons
Several icons appear at the bottom of the home screen
and all other screens.
•Back —Return to the previous screen.
•Home —Return to the home screen.
•Recent apps —Display up to the last eight apps
you used most recently. Touch a displayed app to
open it.
Notifications
Your home screen displays notifications such as status,
email, or calendar or event reminders.
Touch a reminder to see details.
Use & change your home screen
On your home screen, shortcuts are icons that open
your favorite apps, Web bookmarks, contacts, mail
labels, or music playlists. Widgets show you news,
weather, messages, and other updates.
Flick the home screen left or right to open other panels
of shortcuts and widgets.
•To open something, touch it. Touch Home to
return to the home screen.

•To add a widget, touch > Widgets. To add a
shortcut, touch > App shortcuts or > More.
Touch an object and drag it into one of the home
screen panels outlined at the top of the screen.
(Flick left and right to see all available widgets.)
You can add a folder to organize your shortcuts.
•To move or delete something, touch and hold it
until you feel a vibration, then drag it to another
location, another panel, or to the trash at the top of
the screen.
Personalize
Sounds: Open the Quick Settings Menu, then touch
Settings > Sound
Display settings:
•To set display brightness, open the Quick Settings
Menu and touch Settings > Display > Brightness.
•To set orientation, open the Quick Settings Menu
and touch Settings > Display >Auto-rotate screen.
•To set animation, open the Quick Settings Menu and
touch Settings > Display > Animation.
Note: Some apps are designed so that your tablet
can “animate” them by rotating, fading, moving,
and stretching one or more images.
Search
To search, touch Search , then use the search
window that appears.
To search by voice, touch , then speak your
keyword(s) when prompted.
To type your search, touch the search window, then
enter your keyword(s) and touch .
To change search settings, touch .

You can find all of your apps in one place. From the
home screen, touch Launcher icon .
Want more? No problem: To download more apps,
touch Launcher icon > Market.
Your tablet can tell you when there’s an updated app or
other software. To install the update, just follow the
instructions on your screen.
Browse & install apps
Get all the fun games and cool apps you want! Android
Market™ provides access to applications developed by

developers worldwide, so you can find the app you
want. If you need help or have questions about
Android Market, touch Menu > Help.
Find it: Launcher icon > Market
Scroll to and touch the app you want to install. Then,
touch Install (if app is free) or Buy.
Manage & restore apps
Find it: Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage
applications
Touch an app in the list, then touch Uninstall (for apps
you downloaded), Clear cache, or other options.
To reinstall apps from Android Market, touch Launcher
icon > Market > My downloads. Previously
installed apps are listed and available for download.

Settings
Open the Quick Settings Menu to see quick settings
for brightness, sound, orientation, airplane mode,

network, and Bluetooth wireless. Just drag upward
from the bottom of the home screen.
To see and modify all settings for your tablet, touch
Settings
Update my tablet
You can check, download, and install tablet software
updates using your tablet, or using your computer:

•Using your tablet:
You may get an automatic notification of an available
update on your tablet. Simply follow the instructions
to download and install.
To manually check for updates, touch Menu
>Settings > About tablet > System updates.
Your tablet downloads any updates over your mobile
network. Remember, these updates can be quite
large (25MB or more) and may not be available in all
countries. If you don’t have an unlimited data plan,
or mobile network updates are not available in your
country, you can update using a computer.
•Using your computer:
On your computer, go to
www.motorola.com/myXOOM and check the
“Software” links. If an update is available, simply
follow the installation instructions.
Text entry

Touchscreen keyboard
You can open a keyboard on your screen by touching a
text field. To close the keyboard, touch Back .
Different keyboards open for different text entry
screens. For example, this keyboard opens when you
create an email message:
Input methods
To select an input method, touch and hold a text entry
area on the screen to open the Edit text menu. Touch
Input method, then touch the method you want:

Multi-touch keyboard
Enter text a letter at a time. As you type, your phone
suggests words from your dictionary and chosen
language. Your phone also automatically enters
apostrophes in some words, like “dont.” You can also
touch two keys at the same time, such as Shift
with a letter.

Web
you don’t need a PC, surf the web with your phone
Quick start: Browser
Find it: Launcher icon >Browser
Note: If you can’t connect, contact your service
provider.
Connect
Your phone uses the mobile phone network (over the
air) or a Wi-Fi connection to automatically access the
Web.
Note: Your service provider may charge to surf the
Web or download data.
To use a wireless network, press Menu > Settings
>Wireless & networks. Touch Wi-Fi to turn it on and
touch Wi-Fi settings to search for nearby wireless
networks. Touch a network to connect.
Select links
When you touch a
link, your phone
outlines it and goes to
that page. If you touch
and hold the link, your phone shows options, like Open
in new window or Bookmark link.
Play web videos
The icon on a web page or link indicates that a
video is available. Just touch to begin playback.
Double-tap the video during playback to enlarge it for
better viewing.
Browser options
Press Menu to see browser options:

BLOCKBUSTER videos
Blockbuster On Demand is a service that allows you to
purchase or rent and download video assets from your
mobile phone. To use this service, you need a
Blockbuster account and a connection to a Wi-Fi
network.
You can play rented videos on your mobile phone.
You can play purchased videos on your phone and on
PCs or TVs that are connected to a TiVo® DVR, a
Blu-ray player, or 2Wire™ media platform.
Just click on the free Blockbuster app:
Find it: Launcher icon >Blockbuster
The app completes an upgrade procedure, which may
take a few minutes. When the upgrade is complete,
you will be prompted to activate your phone:
•If you don’t have a Blockbuster account, touch
Activate Using Device or Activate Using PC. When
you activate the device, you will be prompted to add
credit card information for your payment option.

•If you already have a Blockbuster account, touch
Enter PIN, then enter your account information.
Now you can browse or search Blockbuster.com to
find the videos you want to rent or purchase.
YouTube™ videos
Find it: Launcher icon >YouTube
The YouTube user-generated content Web site lets you
share videos with YouTube users everywhere. You
don’t need a YouTube account to browse and view
videos.
Note: If you don’t have a YouTube account, visit
www.youtube.com to find out more. To create an
account or sign in, go to “Log in or create account” on
page 18.
Watch YouTube videos
Watch YouTube Videos
See popular video categories, like Featured, Most
viewed, and Top rated. Touch a category, then touch
the video to start playing it. To see more video
categories, touch Menu > Categories. To see a
video in high quality, touch Menu > Settings > High
quality video.
Search for videos
Find it: Launcher icon >YouTube
> Menu > Search
Enter text, then touch Search.To clear your search
history, touch Menu > Settings > Clear search
history.
Share videos
Send someone a link to a video that you are watching.
1Touch the video to select it.
2Touch Menu > Share.
3Address and complete your email, then touch Send.

Log in or create account
Find it: Launcher icon >YouTube
> Menu > My account
1To create your YouTube account, touch the “Don’t
have a YouTube account? Touch here to create one”
link.
If you already have a YouTube account, enter your
username, password and touch Sign in.
2For a new account, enter a username, and complete
the fields, then touch I accept.
Upload videos
Find it: Launcher icon >YouTube
> Menu > Upload
1Touch the video you want to upload. You can change
the video title, description, set the access, and add
tags.
2Touch Upload.
Take & share photos & videos
Photos
Take that family photo, and post it online for everyone
to see.
Note: To get the clearest photos, wipe the lens clean
with a soft, dry cloth before you take a photo.
Find it: Launcher icon >Camera.
To take the photo, touch
Photo modes—You can make adjustments to
optimize your shot. Touch a button on the right side of
the screen to make changes (touch the screen to turn
on the buttons if necessary):
•—Set flash: Auto, flash On or Off.
•—Adjust for ambient light: Auto, Incandescent,
Daylight, and Fluorescent.

•—Set special effects: None, Mono, Daylight,
Sepia, Negative, Solarize, and Posterize.
•—Select the camera lens on the Back or Front of
the tablet.
•—Select Store location, Focus mode, Exposure,
Picture size, Picture quality, or Scene Mode.
Photo options—Until you exit the viewfinder, photos
that you take are displayed as thumbnails. Touch a
thumbnail to access these options:
•To start a slideshow of all of the thumbnails,
touch .
•To send the photo in a message, transfer it using
Bluetooth® wireless, or post it online, touch .
•To delete the photo, touch .
•To see detailed information about the photo,
touch Details.
•To rotate photo, touch Rotate Right or Rotate
Left.
•To set the photo as a wallpaper or contact photo,
touch > Set picture as > Contact Photo or
Wallpaper.
•To crop the photo, touch > Crop.
Videos
Find it: Launcher icon >Camera, then slide
the toggle (in the lower right corner) up to .
Note: To get the clearest videos, wipe the lens clean
with a soft, dry cloth before you record a video.
To record the video, touch . Touch to stop the
recording.
Video modes—You can make adjustments to optimize
your video. Touch one of the buttons on the right side
of the viewfinder to make changes (you may need to
touch the screen to make the buttons appear):
