1. Safety Regulations
1.1. Correct Use
The OptimAir 3000’s are a range of turbo filter devices for respiratory protection.
They filter known toxic substances (dangerous gases, vapours or particles) out of
the ambient air.
There is a range of different models:
OptimAir 3000 – for use in contaminated ambient air
OptimAir 3000A – for use when high flow is required (for example: use in
asbestos contaminated ambient air)
OptimAir 3000EX – for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
The use of OptimAir 3000A devices is ONLY permitted with respiratory
protective full face masks OptimAir 3000 (art. no. 100 518 10) and
particle filters OptimAir 3000 (art. no. 100 496 32). All other choice of
breathing connections and/or filters is not allowed.
It is imperative that this operating manual must be read and observed when using
the OptimAir 3000 range. In particular, the safety instructions, as well as the
information for the use and operation of the apparatus, must be carefully read and
observed. The respective operating manuals of the breathing connections, filters
and battery chargers must be read and observed as well. Furthermore, the
national regulations* applicable in the user's country must be taken into account
for a safe use, including specific admission requirements for works in potentially
explosive atmospheres.
Alternative use, or use outside this specifications will be considered as non-
compliance. This also applies especially to unauthorised alterations to the
apparatus and to commissioning work that has not been carried out by MSA or
authorised persons.
Danger!
These products are supporting life and health. Inappropriate use,
maintenance or servicing may affect the function of the device and
thereby seriously compromise the user’s life.
Before use the product operability must be verified. The product must
not be used if the function test is unsuccessful, it is damaged, a
competent servicing/maintenance has not been made or if genuine
MSA spare parts have not been used.
Warning!
Any damaged unit must not be used and must be removed from a
potentially explosive atmosphere.
Any unit cannot be discarded or left unattended in these areas.

1.2. Liability Information
MSA accepts no liability in cases where the product has been used
inappropriately or not as intended. The selection and use of the product are the
exclusive responsibility of the individual operator.
Product liability claims, warranties also as guarantees made by MSA with respect
to the product are voided, if it is not used, serviced or maintained in accordance
with the instructions in this manual.

The OptimAir 3000 range consists of
the basic apparatus OptimAir 3000, OptimAir 3000A or OptimAir 3000EX
with control pad: with ON/OFF button, volume flow and battery charge
indicators
a battery pack,
4 filter caps:
2 deep filter caps for combination filters and
2 shallow filter caps for particle or gas filters,
a body belt for carrying the apparatus and
an OptimAir 3000EX standard battery charger (OptiCharge EX).
The filters used in the OptimAir 3000 range are ordered separately and
depend upon the application of the apparatus.

3. Use
3.1. Safety Instructions
Oxygen content and toxic material concentration
The type and concentration level of the toxic material in the ambient atmosphere
must be known.
The permitted minimum oxygen concentration of ambient air is governed by
national regulation. They have different values for minimum levels of oxygen and
this must be taken into account for safe use (typically in the range 17% to 19.5%).
Toxic gases without smell recognition
Filters used for toxic gases which do not have smell recognition on the clean air
side require special rules of use with reference to the time being used and the
use itself. If there is any doubt about the composition of the toxic gases, a
supplied air breathing apparatus must be used which is independent of the
ambient atmosphere (an isolating unit).
Filter selection
When using gas filters, ensure that no particle-type toxic substances are present,
and, when using particle filters, that there are no toxic gases present. If this is not
the case, combination filters must be used.
Working environment
A basic principle is that turbo filter devices must not be used in narrow or confined
spaces (containers, ducts, pits).
The OptimAir 3000 and 3000A must not be used if the surrounding atmosphere is
in danger of explosion.
The OptimAir 3000EX is designed for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
When using turbo filter devices, naked flames and liquid metal droplets (e.g. at
welding works) must be kept away from the filter due to the hazard of ignition that
can lead to hazardous concentrations of toxic substances.

Duration and conditions of use
The exhaustion of gas filters is normally detected by odour on the clean side. The
exhaustion of particle filters or the particle filter section of combination filters is
normally signalled by an increase in flow resistance. The minimum volume flow of
the air is no longer maintained and the alarm signal sounds.
When using filters for radioactive substances, micro-organisms or biochemically-
active substances, the particle filter may only be used once!

3.2. Assembly
The OptimAir 3000 range must be assembled before use.
Attention!
Do not fit the breathing tube until calibration has taken place. The air
must be able to flow freely out of the apparatus during calibration.
Fitting the battery pack
(1) Align the battery so that the formed section (curved)
and the contacts are aligned to each other.
(2) Place the battery in the apparatus and push in until
it clicks in place.
The EX battery only fits the OptimAir 3000EX
whilst the standard and long life batteries only
fit the 3000 and 3000A units.
Fitting the filter and caps
(3) Select the appropriate filter cap for the filters
required:
deep filter caps for combination filters
shallow filter caps for particle or gas filters
(4) Insert the filters in the apparatus and screw the cap
down to clamp the filters in place tightening by hand
only.
EX filter caps are identifiable by the sign ex
and colour.
Fitting the body belt
(5) Feed the strap of the body belt into the apparatus.
When using the comfort body belt, also use the
middle strap on the body belt.

3.3. Calibration and getting started
After exchanging/removing the filters
Calibration and initial Switch-on
(1) Push the ON/OFF button on the control pad for
about 2 seconds.
The unit performs a self-test. Filters must have been
installed and the calibration procedure will start
automatically (because the breathing tube is not
connected.)
The power of the blower is adjusted to suit to the
filter type. This process takes about 8 seconds. All
the LEDs light up and a warning signal sounds.
Calibration is complete as soon as the volume flow
indicator next to the battery charge indicator goes
out and the warning signal ceases.
The green LEDs indicate the charge condition of the
battery (normal display).
Calibration is only necessary if filters are
inserted or changed!
Connecting the breathing tube
(2) After calibration, connect the breathing tube with
mask or hood to the device within one minute,
otherwise the flow alarm will be activated.
(3) The OptimAir is now ready for operation.
Attention!
Only fit and remove the breathing mask or hood in toxic-free ambient
atmospheres with the apparatus running to ensure that air for
breathing is available.

Starting after interruption of work
If the filters have not been removed a new calibration is not necessary.
The OptimAir automatically adjusts itself to the specific breathing
protection mask or hood.
Attention!
If the filters have not been removed, the user must verify before
starting the unit again, that both filters are still in place (no empty filter
slot).
(1) Push the ON/OFF button on the control pad for about 2 seconds.
Self-test is performed. This process takes about 3 seconds. All the LEDs
light up and a warning signal sounds. The breathing tube can remain
connected to the apparatus.
(2) The self-test is complete as soon as the red volume flow indicator goes out
and the warning signal ceases. The apparatus operates with the stored
operating data from the last calibration.
(3) The OptimAir is now ready for operation.
3.4. Switching off
Attention!
Only switch the OptimAir off when in a toxic free ambient atmosphere
and after the removal of the breathing protection mask or hood.
In order to switch the OptimAir off, hold the ON/OFF button down until the
apparatus switches off.
3.5. Alarm function
The OptimAir emits optical and acoustic alarms in order to warn the user of
dangerous situations. If the alarm is set off during action or if the blower fails,
leave the hazard area. Only remove the breathing connection of devices with full
face masks in toxic-free atmospheres. An alarm can have the following causes:
The filter is exhausted,
insert 2 new filters of the same type and perform a new calibration
(section 3.2)
Battery flat,
charge battery or insert fully charged battery
Tubing is twisted, kinked, squashed or has a leak,
check tubing and rectify the fault
Breathing protection mask or hood removed,
replace the mask or hood or switch the apparatus off
Filter not inserted for calibration,
insert filter and repeat calibration (section 3.3)

4. Maintenance
4.1. Inspection
All parts of the OptimAir must be cleaned and checked for damage and wear
each time it is used. If necessary, the parts must be replaced. Parts checked are:
Breathing tube and connections
All filters
Charge condition of the battery
Basic apparatus OptimAir
Attention!
Further repair work must only be performed by MSA or by an
authorised customer service organisation.
4.2. Filter change
Attention!
Only change the filters in pairs and using filters of the same type.

Exhausted or damaged filters should be replaced as follows:
(1) Remove the filter caps and remove the filters
(2) Insert new filters (section 3.2)
(3) Re-calibrate the apparatus (section 3.3)
4.3. Breathing tube
Before each use check the tubing for damage such as tears or holes.
Damaged tubing must be replaced by new tubing.

4.4. Cleaning
Clean the OptimAir using a dry or damp cloth. Cleaning must not be carried out in
potentially explosive atmospheres.
4.5. Charging the battery pack
Attention!
Never charge the battery in an Ex area.
Attention!
The batteries may only be charged with the MSA charger OptimAir
3000EX standard battery charger (OptiCharge EX). The use of other
chargers can lead to damage to the battery or to the instrument itself.
Charge the batteries with the OptimAir 3000EX standard battery charger
(OptiCharge EX). Observe the operating manual of the battery charger.
Avoid completely discharging the battery pack since this can cause
capacity losses in the battery.
4.6. Changing the battery pack
Attention!
Never remove the battery from the blower in a potentially explosive
atmosphere.
Never charge the battery or use the charger in a potentially explosive
atmosphere.
(1) Push the "Press" button and remove the battery
(2) Insert a new battery (section 3.2)

5. Selection criteria for filters
OptimAir 3000 range gas filters are classified according to filter type (A, B, E
and K) and filter class (1, 2 and 3). A letter and a colour designate the types of
gas filter as follows:
Type Colour Area of Application
A brown
Vapours from organic compounds with a boiling point higher than
65°C.
B grey Inorganic gases and vapours, e.g. Chlorine, hydrogen sulphide,
hydrogen cyanide (not carbon monoxide).
E yellow Sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, acid gases.
K green Ammonia and organic ammonia derivatives.
P white Particle
For gas filters A, B, E and K the filter class to be used depends on the possible
maximum concentration of the hazardous gas and the required service time.
Turbo filter devices are only to be used up to certain concentrations of hazardous
substances:
Class TM3 up to 500 times the threshold value
Class TH3 up to 100 times the threshold value
Class TH2 up to 20 times the threshold value
Filter class 1
with gases
up to max. 0.05% by volume (500 ml/m³)
Filter class 2
with gases
up to max. 0.1% by volume (1000 ml/m³)
In each case, the minor value applies for the permitted maximum concentration.
