2.1BeforeYou Begin
Ensureyou haveastable,clean working environment. Dustand dirtcan getintocomponentsand cause
amalfunction.Usecontainerstokeep small componentsseparated.
Adequatelighting and propertoolscan preventyou fromaccidentallydamaging the internalcomponents.
Mostofthe proceduresthatfollowrequireonlyafewsimpletools,including the following:
wAPhilipsscrewdriver
wAflat-tipped screwdriver
wAsetofjewelersScrewdrivers
wAgrounding strap
wAnanti-staticpad
Using yourfingerscan disconnectmostofthe connections.It isrecommended thatyou do notuse
needle-nosed plierstodisconnectconnectionsasthesecan damage the soft metalorplasticpartsofthe
connectors.
Beforeworking on internalcomponents,makesurethatthe powerisoff. Ground yourselfbeforetouching
anyinternalcomponents,bytouching ametalobject. Staticelectricitycan damage manyofthe electronic
components.Humidenvironmenttend tohaveless staticelectricitythan dryenvironments.Agrounding
strap iswarranted wheneverdangerofstaticelectricityexists.
2.2Precautions
Computercomponentsand electroniccircuitboardscan be damaged bydischargesofstaticelectricity.
Working on the computersthatarestill connected toapowersupplycan be extremelydangerous.Follow
the guidelinesbelowtoavoiddamage toyourcomputeroryourself:
wAlways disconnectthe unitfromthe poweroutletwheneveryou areworking inside the case.
wIf possible,wearagrounded wriststrap when you areworking inside the computercase.Alternatively,
discharge anystaticelectricitybytouching the baremetalchassisofthe unitcase,orthe bare
metalbodyofanyothergrounded appliance.
wHoldelectroniccircuitboards(suchasthe EBC572Aboard)bythe edgesonly.Donottouchthe
componentson the boardunless itisnecessarytodo so.Don’tflexorstress the circuitboard.
wLeaveall componentsinside the static-proofpackaging thattheyshipped withuntil theyareready
forinstallation.
wUsecorrectscrewsand do notovertighten screws.

2.3Setting Jumpers
Ajumperisthe simplestkind ofelectricswitch.It consistsoftwometalpinsand acap.When setting the
jumpers,ensurethatthe jumpercapsareplaced on the correctpins.When the jumpercap isplaced on
bothpins,the jumperisSHORT.If you removethe jumpercap,orplacethe jumpercap on justone pin,
the jumperisOPEN.Pleasesee the following illustrations
The illustrations on the right show
a 2-pin jumper. When the jumper
cap is placed on both pins, the
jumper is SHORT. If you remove
the jumper cap, or place the
jumper cap on just one pin, the
jumper is OPEN.Open (Off) Short (On)
These illustrations show a 3-pin
jumper. Pins 1 and 2 are SHORT.
