Manufacturer’s declaration
This product has been manufactured in accordance with the documents that constitute the basis
for product certification and the relevant criteria for production control.
Requirements relating to the flue
For both rear flue connections and top flue connections the chimney must be able to withstand
temperatures of at least 350 °C.
Warning!
When the stove is in use certain surfaces become very hot. Physical contact with these
surfaces can cause skin burns.
Pay particular attention also to the high temperatures of the heat radiated through the glass
door. Do not place combustible material closer than the recommended safe distances.
Failure to observe these safe distances can result in an uncontrolled fire.
A smouldering fire can cause gases and fumes to ignite without warning, with the risk of
causing damage to both persons and property.
IMPORTANT!
Always contact your local authority planning office before installing a wood-burning
stove or fire-place.
The owner of the house is personally responsible for ensuring compliance with the
mandatory safety requirements and must have the installation approved by a qualified
inspector.
Your local chimney sweep must also be informed about the installation as this will affect
the routines for regular chimney-sweeping services.

Structural support
Check to determine whether the floor construction is strong
enough to support the stove and chimney you wish to install.
This is especially important if the stove is to stand on a
wooden floor construction. Provided the total weight does not
exceed 400 kilos, it is not normally necessary to provide any
extra reinforcement for wooden floor joists. However, always
consult a qualified builder for advice.
Floor-plate
To protect the floor from falling embers the stove must
always stand on a non-combustible surface. If the floor
is made of a combustible material, it must be protected by
a non-combustible covering that extends at least 300 mm
in front of the stove and 100 mm along each side. As other
national or local requirements may also apply, we advise you
always to check with a chimney sweep or the relevant local
authority department before installing the stove.
Chimney
The draught in the chimney must produce a negative pressure
of at least 12 Pa. The main factors affecting the draught are
the length and cross-sectional area of the chimney, but the
force of the draught also depends on how well sealed the
construction is. The shortest recommended chimney length is
3.5 metres. The cross-sectional area of the chimney should be
within the range 150–200 cm² (140–160 mm in diameter).
Make sure that the chimney is well sealed and that there are
no gaps around soot hatches and flue-pipe connections.
Remember that the draught is reduced in flues with sharp
bends or horizontal sections. A horizontal flue length of up to
1.0 metre is permissible, provided that the vertical flue is at
least 5.0 metres in height.
It must be possible to clean the flue throughout its entire
length, and the soot hatches must be easily accessible.

This folder contains assembly and installation instructions
for Handöl 24 stoves. You will also have received separate
Lighting and Operating Instructions with your stove. We
recommend that you read these carefully before lighting a
fire for the first time, and keep them safe for future reference.
This stove has been type-approved for connection to a
chimney which can withstand flue gas temperatures of up to
350°C. The external diameter of the connecting sleeve is 150
mm.
Sufficient air must be supplied to the stove from outdoors to
ensure proper combustion.

Building permission
It may be necessary for you to apply for building permission
from your local planning authority before installing a
wood-burning stove or erecting a chimney. Before starting
installation work, we recommend that you contact the
relevant authority to check which regulations apply.

Place the stove on a floor-plate and check that the distances
between the stove and walls/ceiling are at least as great as
specified in the diagrams below. For top flue connections
to a modular (steel) chimney, please refer to the relevant
manufacturer’s assembly instructions.
Observe the requirements for safe distances to combustible
materials that apply to the steel chimney.
Always allow a gap of at least 1.0 metre from the opening in
the stove door to any combustible part of the building or any
interior fittings.

The prefabricated floor-plates for stoves in the Handöl 20 series have a hole for the air supply hose. Note that the illustrations
above show the position of this hole in the floor-plate, not the air inlet in the stove body itself. Flexible tubing must be used to
supply air to the stove via the hole in the floor-plate, as indicated by the illustrations on page 45.

Combustion air can be supplied via a duct directly from
outside, or indirectly through a vent in the external wall
of the room in which the stove is installed.
The diagrams below show various alternative solutions.
When combustion air is supplied via the wall behind the
stove, the punched metal plate in the rear panel of the
stove must be knocked out with a hammer to allow the air
supply hose to pass through.
The connecting collar on the fire-box has an external
diameter of 64 mm.
To prevent condensation in air ducts that pass through
heated spaces, the duct must be insulated with 30 mm of
mineral wool covered with a moisture seal (plastic vapour
barrier). It is important to seal carefully around the pipe
where it passes through walls or floors. Use jointing
compound. For ducts longer than 1.0 metre in length, the
pipe diameter must be increased to 100 mm, and the size
of the air vent in the wall must be increased accordingly.
A 1.0 metre length of flexible tubing for combustion
air, insulated to prevent condensation, is available as an
accessory.

Unpacking the stove

When cleaning out soot, it is
necessary to remove the smoke
baffle. This is easily done with
Handöl 20 series stoves by lifting the
baffle and then easing it to one side.
Remove the transport packaging from around the stove and open all the packages in the delivery to make sure that nothing is
missing or damaged on delivery. Behind the stove’s plinth front, which is held in place with a snap-fitting, is a transport screw
that secures the stove to the pallet. Unscrew this screw. Lift the stove from the pallet and move it into place as shown in the
illustration.
Fitting a cast-iron and aluminium mantelshelf (optional accessory)
Unscrew the two socket-head screws at the front edge of the top of the fire-box. Lay the cast-iron mantelshelf support in place
and secure it with four socket-head screws. The cast-iron mantelshelf is fitted with four adjustable screws (8 mm). Adjust the
height of these screws so that the aluminium mantelshelf lies flush against the stove hood.

Handle soapstone with care. The edges are particularly
sensitive to impact.
There are two adjusting screws at the front edge of the top
of the fire-box. Adjust these screws so that the mantels-
helf lies flush against the stove hood, with the rear edges
resting on the stove’s side panels.

Rear-flue connection to a brick chimney
Mark out the centre of the hole to be made in the wall for a rear flue. Check that the height on the chimney corresponds exactly
with the height of the connecting flue from the stove. Make a hole approx. 180 mm in diameter and then secure the flue sleeve
in the wall using heat-proof mortar (not supplied). Leave the mortar to dry before connecting the stove to the flue.

The stove is supplied from the factory ready for connection to a top flue. For rear flue connections the connecting collar must
be moved from the top to the rear of the stove. Remove the covering plates and insulation from the top of the stove and knock
out the punched metal plate on the rear of the stove. Replace the flue collar with the covering cap and vice-versa. Then re-fit
the covering plates and insulation on the top of the stove as shown below.
Slide the connecting flue into the collar, taking care to make sure that the gasket is not moved out of position. Stand the stove
on the floor-plate and slide the connecting flue into the flue sleeve in the wall. Seal the joint between the wall sleeve and the
connecting flue with sealing rope. If necessary, use heat-resistant sealant to make the seal tight.

Top-flue connection through the ceiling
Follow the instructions below when making a hole in the ceiling. When installing a chimney, always refer to the instructions
supplied by the chimney manufacturer.

When the ceiling is flat, the hole in the ceiling shall measure 400x430 mm
with the sides of the hole parallel to the sides of the stove, both for installations
against a straight wall and in a corner.
When the ceiling slopes and the stove
is located in a corner of the room, the
horizontal projection of the hole in
the ceiling shall be 480x480 mm and
the hole shall be aligned parallel with
the walls.

Stand the stove on the floor-plate. The insulation and the
insulation retainer are supplied from the factory ready for
rear-flue installation. Lift off the sealing plate, insulation
and insulation retainer, cut out the punched plate in the
insulation retainer and remove the centre piece of the
insulation.
The follow sequence describes the installation procedure for connecting the stove to the Premodul chimney system.
Fit the start section of the flue (the flue-base) to the connecting collar. Make sure that the packing round the collar is not
moved from its intended position. Then follow the sequence shown in the illustration. The retaining plate should rest on the
ridge around the flue-base. Secure the sealing plate in place against the stove hood by using pliers to bend the lugs on the
hood. Continue the installation of the chimney modules through the hole in the ceiling.

Slide the chimney mantle up through the hole in the
ceiling and then lower it down onto the locating pins on
the sealing plate. Fit the rear panel. If the height of the
room means that the chimney mantle consists of more than
one section, follow the instructions in the section headed
“Installing an extension mantle”.
Fit the front and rear sections of the ceiling insulation,
leaving a gap of 5 mm between the insulation and the
chimney mantle. Start with the rear section. Make sure
that the insulation is pushed up so it is touching the
ceiling. Press the rubber sealing strip into the gap around
the chimney mantle. Turn the sealing strip as shown in the
illustration above.

High-level elbow-joint flue connection
Stand the stove on the floor-plate. The insulation and the insulation retainer are supplied from the factory ready for rear-
flue installation. Lift off the sealing plate, insulation and insulation retainer, cut out the punched plate in the insulation
retainer and remove the centre piece of the insulation. Fit the start section of the flue (the flue-base) to the connecting
collar. Make sure that the packing round the collar is not moved from its intended position. Then replace the insulation
retainer, the insulation and the sealing plate. Secure the sealing plate in place against the stove hood by using pliers to bend
the lugs on the hood.
Install the flue sleeve in the wall as described in the ins-
tructions on page 48.
Adapt the length of the connecting flue pipe and slide it
into the sleeve. Seal the connection with sealing rope.

Cut away the punched metal cover in the rear panel
and hang the rear panel over the connecting flue pipe.
Connect the two ends of the flue pipes with an elbow
joint and seal the connection with heat-resistant sealant.
Fit the chimney mantle by lowering it onto the locating pins on the sealing plate. Then fix the rear panel to the mantle. Finally,
lay the covering plate on top.

Measure the height on the rear panel at which a hole must
be made to connect the stove to the chimney. Cut away
one or more of the panels in the telescopic mantle as
required and hang the rear panel over the connecting flue.
Then connect the stove to the chimney as described in the
section headed “High-level elbow-joint flue connection”.
Screw the threaded pins into the upper flange of the chimney mantle. Then attach the sealing plate and lay the insulation
in place as shown. The sealing plate and insulation are not used when connecting to a rear flue directly from the rear of the
stove, nor when connecting to a top flue through the ceiling using the Premodul chimney system.
The telescopic mantle can be used with all types of flue
connections described earlier in these instructions. The
procedure below describes installation together with a high-
level elbow joint flue connection.

Installing an extension mantle
Fit the telescopic chimney mantle by lowering it into place
on the locating pins on the sealing plate. Then extend
the telescopic section up to the ceiling and secure it by
screwing it into place. Fit the rear panel into place against
the rear edges of the mantle and secure it by screwing into
the ceiling.
A coupling plate is required between two chimney mantle
sections. Place the coupling plate on the lower of the
mantles so that the threaded pins pass through the flange
around the top inside edge of the mantle. Fit the upper
mantle section over the pins in a similar fashion. Then fit
rear panels to each section of the mantle.
