NikonSeriesE lenses.A built-inmicromotorenablestheteleconverterlens
elementsto move, assuringvirtuallyinstantaneousfocusdetectionandpinpoint
subjectfocus.
Anadvanced,multiple-elementlensconstructionensuresyourteleconverter
willdeliveroptimumopticalperformancewithbutnegligibledecreaseinimage
quality.AswithmostNikonoptics, theTC-16benefitsfromNikonIntegrated

Forexample,whentakinga pictureofa subjectwitha TC-16-mounted300mm
f/2lenswithinarangeof70m(229,7ft)to10m(32.8 ft), whichistheprimelens's
minimumfocusingdistance,youwon'tbeabletoshootthesubjectifit comes
closerthan35m(114.5ft)ifyou'vesetthedistancescaletoinfinitybecausethe
minimumshootingdistancerequiredforautofocusdetectiontoworkatthis
distanceis35mm (114.5 ft).
Itisthusbesttoresettheprimelens'sdistancescalebyobservingthefollowing
procedures.
1. DetachtheprimelensinusefromtheTC-16andattachittotheF3AF/DX-1
assembly.
2. Focusonthesubjectatitsmaximumshootingdistance;thenlockthis read-
ingontheprimelens'sdistancescale.(Withthe300mmf/2IF-ED,usethe
lens'sconvenientpresettablefocusingringlockingscrew.)
3.RemovethelensinusefromtheF3AFcamerabodyandinserttheTC-16
betweentheprimelensandtheF3AF/DX-1assembly;thensettheTC-16's
ON/OFFswitchto"ON".
4. Focusonthesubjectatitsminimumshootingdistance.IfbothLEDin-focus
indicators(X) lightup,thismeansthedistancescalepresetinStep2
enablescontinuousautofocusoperation,ButiftheLEDfocus-impossible
warningindicator(x)*ortheLEDfar-focusindicator(•*)lightsup,this
meansthesubjectiscloserthanthepresetminimumshootingdistance.
So, inthiscase,resetthedistancescalebyobservingthefollowingproce-
dures.

YourTC-16isequippedwitha focuslockbutton(T).Depressingthisbutton
duringautofocusoperationwillautomaticallylockorfixthedistanceinfocus.
Autofocusrestartstheinstantyoureleasethebutton.Totakepictureswiththe
mainsubjectoff-center,followtheseprocedures:
1. First,centerthemainsubjectwithintheviewfinder'scentralfocusingframe.
2. LightlytouchtheshutterreleasebuttonoftheF3AFcamerabodyandmake
surebothLEDin-focusindicators(•^Olightup;thendepressthelocuslock
button.
3.Whileholdingthefocuslockbutton,recomposethepicture,anddepress
theshutterreleasebuttontotakethepicture.'
Notes:
1. Whenthefocuslockbuttonisdepressed,theF3AFcamerabody'smeter
andthe DX-1 AFFinder'sautofocusdetectingsystemareautomaticallyshut

3.Thefocusstayslockedaslongasyoukeepthefocuslockbuttonde-
pressed; autofocusoperationautomaticallyrestartstheinstantyoutake
yourfingeroffthebutton.

EXPOSUREDETERMINATION
UsingtheTC-16notonlyincreasestheeffectivefocallengthby1.6X,butalso
decreasestheeffectiveaperturebya 1 -1 /3f/stop.
Thus, whentheTC-16teleconverterisinuse,youshoulddisregardtheprime
lens'sengravedaperturescale.
IftheTC-16isattachedtolenseswitha maximumaperturelargerthanf/1.8
(e.g., 50mmf/1.2,50mmf/1,4,35mmf/1.4,etc.),theeffectiveaperturebecomes
f/2.9eveniftheapertureislargerthanf/1.8.Thus,whenusingfastlenses,be
suretosettheaperturetof/1.8orsmaller;otherwise,incorrectexposurewill
result.
Inaddition,someexposurecompensationwillberequiredwithlensesthathave

2. Whenyou'renotusingtheTC-16,setitsON/OFFswitchtothe"OFF"
position; otherwisethebatteriesoftheDX-1whichpowertheTC-16may
bedrained.
3.Duringautofocusoperation,holdtheTC-16properlybecauseinadvertent
touchingofthefocuslockbuttonwillpreventtheteleconverter'slens
elementsfrommoving.
4. Whenitis cold, usetheoptionalaccessoryAnti-ColdBatteryHolderDB-4
to stabilize theDX-1AFFinder'sbatterypower;ifthebatteriespowering
theDX-1areadverselyaffectedbythelowtemperature,thiswilllikewise
affecttheTC-16'sautofocusresponse.
