Installation and Startup
NOTE: In this manual, the term "DS camera head" collectively refers to the following models:
DS-5M, DS-2Mv, DS-2MBW, DS-5Mc, and DS-2MBWc.
1Set up the peripheral equipment. ················································
Connect the DS camera head, DS AC adapter, and the USB mouse to
the DS-L1, then insert a CF card into the card slot of the DS-L1.
Extract the arm from the DS-L1 and set it in place.
2Press the POWER switch on the DS-L1 to turn it on. ···················
3Display a menu.···········································································
Move the mouse pointer to the top third of the screen and right-click
in that area to bring up a menu.
(To hide the menu being displayed, right-click anywhere outside the menu
area.)
* Make sure the power

1Displaying the SETUP menu·························································
Use the SETUP menu to initialize the DS-L1. Select the [SETUP] tag
from the CAM Easy menu to enter the SETUP menu.
2Setting a date and a save destination
Select Additional … from the SETUP menu.
Setting a date
Enter the date and time.
Setting a destination to which to save
Select the destination to which you want image files to be saved when you
press the CAPT. (capture) button on the CAM Easy menu or the CAPTURE
button on the main unit. (Two or more destinations can be selected.)
If you want to save image files to a CF card, select Save to Card in Capture
Function.
* When you’ve finished setting up, press the SAVE button to
save what you’ve set.

3Setting the scene mode buttons ··················································
The DS-L1 has several types of scene modes (shooting conditions) available
to choose from, depending on the type of subject. The scene mode buttons
let you call up one of these scene modes.
Select Power On Settings from the SETUP menu.

According to the type of subject, select the type of scene mode
button from two types displayed on the CAM Easy menu.
• Choose Ind. for industrial specimens (e.g., wafers, metal, and printed
circuit boards)
• Choose Bio. for biological specimens (e.g., fluorescent, bright field
and differential interference/phase contrast).
* After you’ve finished setting up, press the SAVE button to
record your settings.

Select File Settings .
Setting a folder in which files are to be stored
— When saving to a CF card
Use the Card Dir text box to specify the folder name for CF cards.
• The folder name can be specified using up to eight characters.
• If you select the Auto check box, a folder is automatically created
according to the date on which you saved a file. The folder thus
created is assigned a name that consists of the first two characters of
your specified folder name and the six characters representing the
date.
Example: If the specified folder name in Card Dir is IMGBOX with the
Auto check box selected and the date is 2005.03.28, then
the folder name is “IM050328”.
NOTE: When saving to an FTP server via a LAN, refer to “4.6 Saving Images to an FTP Sever
PC from the DS-L1” in Chapter VI of the instruction manual.
Setting a file name for saving
Use the File Name text box to specify a file name under which you
want an image to be saved.
• The file name can be specified using up to four characters. A
photographed image is saved under a file name comprising the file
name you specified and an automatically assigned serial number.
• If you select the Auto check box, a photographed image is saved
under a file name comprising eight characters representing the date
and time (days, hours, minutes and seconds) at which you saved the
image.
Example: If the file name in File Name is DNL1 with the Auto check
box selected and the date is 2005.03.28 15:30:54, then the
file name is “28153054”.

Setting a file format and a file size
1) Set a file format in which you want files to be saved.
• Select either “JPEG” or “BMP” in File Type. If you select “JPEG”, you
need to set a compression rate. This can be selected from four
choices, “Fine” to “Draft”, available in JPEG Quality.
2) Select photographing mode in SOURCE.
• Normally, select "s5M" (for DS-5M/DS-5Mc) or "s2M" (for
DS-2Mv/DS-2MBW/DS-2MBWc), which is for high picture quality.
3) Select an image size to be saved in SIZE.
• Select one of three choices available: “2560∗1920, ” “1280∗960, ”
or “640∗480” for DS-5M/DS-5Mc.
• Select one of three choices available: “1600*1200, ” “800*600, ” or
“400*300” for DS-2Mv/DS-2MBW/DS-2MBWc.
• However, if you save images in overlay mode, the image size is
automatically set to 1280∗960 overriding whichever image size
you’ve selected.
Refer to “3 Measuring Two-Point Distance or Entering Information－
TOOL Menu” in Chapter VI of the instruction manual.
* Once you’ve finished making your settings, press the SAVE
button to save them.

Press Return to Window to return to the image display screen.

Easy Menu ·························································································
NOTE: Operation in FL mode of the Easy menu Bio is a special case. Refer to “2.1.2 Special
Photography on the Easy Menu–FL Scene Mode” in Chapter VI of the instruction
manual.
Operation procedure ········································································
(1) Scene mode button
Choose the appropriate button according to the subject to be photographed
or the observation method.
(2) White balance
Photograph an evenly white subject and press the WB button to adjust
the white balance.
(3) Focus
Set a sample under the microscope and watch the monitor while you adjust
the focus.
(4) Exposure compensation
Adjust the brightness of the image in the CMP range of –2.0 to +2.0.
(5) Freeze for image confirmation
Press the (freeze button) to confirm the image is being
photographed.
(6) Save image
Press (CAPT. button) to save the image to a CF card.

Numerous tools are available for use, ranging from distance measurement between two points to a
count marking function, scale display, and superimposition. Refer to your instruction manual for
details.
• Distance measurement between two points

When the DS-L1 and Nikon 90i microscope are connected via USB
(Applies only when the 90i incorporates the DIH-E, motorized
nosepiece, and motorized condenser.)
You can change various microscope functions from the DS-L1 menu (for example, you can select a
different observation method).
* When performing bright-field microscopy
(1) Buttons corresponding to required actions are outlined in solid borders. Operate
the buttons in the sequence indicated by the numbers.
(2) Buttons corresponding to optional functions are enclosed in dashed borders.
(3) Perform the following adjustments from the microscope main unit.
• Condenser focusing and centering
• Removing the DIC prism of the objective from the optical path (when a DIC prism is
installed)
• Removing the polarizer from the optical path (when a polarizer is installed)
• Removing the 1-lambda plate from the optical path (when a 1-lambda plate is
installed)
• Inserting and removing the ND filter and NCB filter
