Nokia 3109 classic User manual

Welcome to your new phone, designed to work with Vodafone services.
Life is short, so we’ll assume that you’ve used a mobile phone before. This
quick guide will just focus on the things that might be different.
We’ll also show you some of the other features and services that you can
use to make the most of now.

Setting up your phone
Before you can start exploring your new phone, you’ll need to set
it up.
Insert your Vodafone SIM card as shown. Make sure the gold
contacts and the cut-off corner are positioned correctly.
Insert a memory card as shown (if one is supplied). This increases
the phone’s memory.
Replace the battery and cover as shown, and charge it if
necessary. See the User Guide for full details on charging.
Press and hold the key on the top of the phone to turn it on
(or off).

What the keys do
The navigation key. Press in to select the option
displayed in the bottom middle of the screen, usually
Select. In the Home screen > Menu.
Press sideways to navigate through menus and lists. In the
Home screen p> Active Standby (see page 5), u> Inbox,
q> Names (contacts), t> New text message.
The Call key makes and answers calls. In the Home screen, it
opens the Call log.
The End key ends calls. Press it to return to the Home
screen.
The soft keys select the options on the bottom left or right
of the screen. In the Home screen, left > Go to (shortcuts)
and right > Calendar. See page 5 to change these.
The Volume keys (on the right side of the phone). These
change the volume for calls and ringtones.
On the bottom of the phone you’ll nd the charging port,
the headphone socket, and a mini-USB port for data transfer.

Entering text
Basics
Press 0for a space, Clear to delete, 1to cycle through common
punctuation (not in Predictive text mode), and *for all symbols
(press and hold *in Predictive mode).
Press the #key to cycle through upper or lower-case, and
through both Predictive and Multitap modes.
Predictive text
If words are underlined, press the *key to cycle through
alternative words. For common punctuation press 1and then
cycle through the options by pressing the *key.

Different phones sometimes use different ways
of entering text, but it doesn’t take long to get
used to it.
Numbers
Press and hold a number key to enter that number, or press and
hold the #key and select Number mode.
Press Options for more options, including changing the writing
language and dictionary settings.

Other differences
Key lock
In standby mode, quickly press and the *key (in that order).
Do the same to release the keypad.
Silent mode
In standby mode, press and hold #to activate Silent mode. Do the
same to restore the previous prole.
Proles
Briey press the top Power button to open the Proles menu.
This lets you choose different ring modes, key and phone locks, and
also Flight mode (for use when the phone transmitter and receiver
must be switched off).

Active Standby mode
Press pin standby mode to open Active Standby. This screen
lets you create notes, view and create calendar entries, turn on
your Music player, and easily access other applications. Use the
navigation key to highlight the application you want, then press
to open it.
International
To change time zones go to Menu > Settings > Time and date >
Time > Time zone.
Shortcuts
You can set the right soft key and the navigation key to open
different applications.
Go to Menu > Settings > My shortcuts. To use the right soft key
to open your Calendar, for example, choose Right Selection key
> Calendar from the list, and then press .
To change the navigation key, choose Navigation key and
choose the options you want.

Making voice calls
Make a call
In standby mode, enter the number using the keypad and then
press . To end a call, press .
To dial a previously-called number, press in the Home
screen. Scroll to the number you want and press again to
start dialling.
During a call, press Loudspeaker. To cancel it, press Normal.
For international numbers, press *twice for the +sign.
Call from Contacts
In standby mode, press qto access Names. Scroll to the
contact you want and press to see the details. Select the
number and press to call it.

Call divert
To select where calls can be diverted to, press Menu > Settings >
Call > Call divert. Select which divert you want > > Activate >
To voice mailbox or To other number.
Call waiting
To answer another call during a call, press . This puts the earlier
on hold. To end the later call, press .
Conference calls
To add a new caller, press Options > New call. To end it press
Options > End call or End all calls. To set up a conference call
when two callers are connected, press Options > Conference.
Speed dialling
To set a speed dial, in standby mode press Menu > Contacts >
Speed dials. Choose a number> Assign, then either enter a
number or choose a contact number using Search.
To use speed dial, press and hold the number key.

Contacts
Find a contact
Press qin the Home screen (or select Menu > Contacts >
Names). Scroll through the list to nd the contact you want, or
enter the rst letter or letters of the name to jump closer.
Press to open it.
Create a new contact
Go to Names > Options > Add new contact. Enter the details,
then press OK.
You can also create new contacts from numbers or email
addresses in other applications using Options > Add to contact.
SIM contacts
SIM contacts display a small icon at the top of the screen.
To copy your SIM contacts to your phone, open Contacts and
select Options > Copy Contacts > From SIM card to phone.

Some Contact options only work on phone contact details.
Edit a contact
Select Options to change or add details. To add email or postal
address, notes or web pages > Add detail.

Sending messages
Create a text message
Press tin the Home screen, or go to Menu > Messaging >
Create message > Text message.
In the To: eld, enter the number of a mobile phone, or press
to choose a recently used number or Contact number.
Press qto go to the Message: eld, and write your message.
Press Send to send it.
To send to multiple contacts, in the message screen press
Options > Insert contact or Insert number.
Multimedia messaging (MMS)
To send images or sounds as well as text, press Menu > Messaging
> Create message > Multimedia.
Press > Text and write your message.

The best time to share your thoughts is now.Then press q, press choose to insert an Image or Sound
clip. Then press Options > Send.
Receiving messages
When a message arrives, you’ll be alerted by a tone and a screen
message. To read messages later, press uin the Home screen
for your Inbox.
Select a message and press to read it. To reply, press Reply,
or Options to forward or delete it.
Other options include Copy to calendar, which copies text from
the message as a calendar reminder, and Use detail, which lets
you use phone numbers, email addresses and web addresses
from the message.

Exploring the Web
Connect to the internet
Go to Menu > Web. Select one of the pre-loaded bookmarks
and press to open it. Or select Go to address, enter a web
address, and press .
Use the navigation keys to highlight the item you want to select,
then press to open that page. Press Back to go back a page.
Press Options for the Browser Option menu. From here you can
bookmark a page, enter a new URL or go back to an earlier web
address.
Use bookmarks
To save a page as a bookmark, press Options > Add bookmark.
To go straight to a saved bookmark, go to Web > Bookmarks.

Organiser
Calendar
In the Home screen, press Calendar, or go to Menu >
Organiser > Calendar. You open on the month view, with today’s
date in a box. Use the navigation key to select other dates – any
days with notes attached are in bold.
To add a note, highlight a date and press View then Add note.
Choose the type of note, and enter the subject and location
(press to go to the next option without entering details). Set
the start and end date and times, and choose the alarm type and
time.
To view by week, press Options > Week view. To go to a specic
date, press Options > Go to date.
To jump to a date in month view, you can enter the number of the
day with the keypad. Enter it again to jump to the same day on
the next month.

To do
Go to Menu > Organiser > To-do list, or choose Options > Go to
to-do list in the Calendar.
To add a note press Options > Add, and enter the text. Press
Next > [choose a priority] > Select.
To mark as done, press Options > Mark note as done.
Notes
Go to Menu > Organiser > Notes > Add note. Enter the text and
press Save.

Bluetooth
Set up your phone
In the Home screen, press Go to > Bluetooth menu. Then set
Bluetooth to On, and choose a name for your phone. Then set
My phone’s visibility to Permanent visibil..
Pair your phone with the headset or car kit
In the Bluetooth menu, open Paired devices.
Press New (make sure your headset or car kit is turned on).
Choose from the list of Bluetooth devices found, and press Pair.
You may be asked to enter the device passcode (usually 0000).
Then press OK.
Once accepted, your phone will now automatically connect with
the headset or car kit when they are in range and are turned on.
Turn the Bluetooth connection off
Press Go to > Bluetooth menu and set Bluetooth to Off.

There are many other Vodafone services that you may be able to use with your phone. Some
services are not yet available in every country or on every phone. Please see the User Guide or
