Model WM-1 Manual Waterborne Air Spray Gun
Safety

Heed all warning symbols that appear in this
document, the operator’s manual, or on the
equipment.
WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to
perform the following tasks. Observe and
follow the safety instructions in this document
and all other related documentation.
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Spray
gun operation requires the use of a grounding
air hose and a high-dielectric strength fluid
tube. Failure to observe this warning may
result in personal injury, death, or equipment
damage.
WARNING: System or material pressurized.
Relieve pressure. Failure to observe may
result in serious burns.
WARNING: Ignition hazard. Do not use this
handgun to spray coating materials having a
fire point below 60 _C (140 _F). Failure to
observe this warning may result in serious
injury and equipment damage.
CAUTION: Use only clean dry air. Failure to
observe this caution may reduce electrostatic
efficiency and cause equipment damage.
WARNING: Wear protective clothing, safety
goggles, and approved respiratory protection.
Failure to observe may result in serious injury.
CAUTION: Do not over tighten parts. Failure
to observe this caution may result in equipment
damage.
SAlways follow instructions in the material supplier’s
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or material
information sheet.
Introduction
This operator’s card contains only the information
necessary for installation, daily operation and
maintenance. For other information, refer to the
manual.
The WM-1 spray gun operates with an Iso-Flo HD
Voltage Block unit (Iso-Flo). Each installation must
meet the following requirements:
SThe system, including the electrostatic power
supply, must be installed properly and in good
working condition.

Daily Operation
Delivery System Start-Up
1. Perform the necessary tasks to start-up the Iso-Flo
HD unit.
2. Check all fluid and air lines for leaks.
Setting Flow Rate
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Make
sure that the electrostatic power unit is turned
off and the fluid supply is properly grounded.
Failure to observe this warning may result in
personal injury, death, or equipment damage.
1. Turn off air supply.
2. Slide the trigger lock (14) all the way down.
3. Perform the tasks necessary to set fluid pressure
in the fluid delivery system. Use the lowest fluid
pressure possible to obtain a satisfactory flow rate
of your coating material.
4. Fully trigger the WM-1 spray gun into a graduated
container. Use a stop watch to establish the time
needed to collect the desired amount of fluid.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the desired flow rate
per minute is obtained.
Preparing to Spray
1. Turn on air supply.
2. Perform the tasks necessary to set the supply air
pressure to the WM-1 spray gun. Use the lowest
air pressure possible to obtain satisfactory
atomization of your coating material.
3. Fully trigger the WM-1 spray gun.
4. Turn the thumb wheel (7) to achieve your desired
spray pattern.
5. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 until the desired spray
pattern and atomization is obtained. If necessary,
adjust the Iso-Flo HD unit fluid and air pressure.
6. Cover the exterior of the WM-1 spray gun with a
Nordson spray gun cover.
7. Turn on the electrostatic power supply.
8. The system is now operational.

Maintenance

1. Relieve the air and fluid pressure. Turn the
electrostatic unit off. 2. Trigger the WM-1 spray gun into a grounded metal container to drain the fluid tube.

3. Point the WM-1 spray gun downward and
remove the retaining ring, air cap, and fluid
tip.

4. Adjust the solvent supply to the lowest
possible pressure.

5. Flush the WM-1 spray gun into a grounded
metal container until clean. 6. Turn off the solvent supply and relieve pressure.

7. Point the gun downward and clean the
front with a soft brush dampened with a
compatible cleaning solvent.

8. Dampen a soft cloth with a compatible
cleaning solvent. Point the gun downward
and wipe off the outer surfaces.

9. Clean the retaining ring, air cap, and fluid
tip with a soft brush, then dry.

10. Trigger the WM-1 spray gun. Insert the
fluid tip into the gun. Place the air cap on
the fluid tip. Install the retaining ring and
tighten securely.

11. Hang up the WM-1 spray gun.

Do not point the gun
upward while cleaning. Do not submerge the gun in solvent.
Do not use excessive
solvent on cleaning cloth. Do not use metal tools to clean the air cap.

Connections and Controls
Table 1 describes each input and control of the WM-1 spray gun. Numbers in the Connections and Controls
column correspond to the numbers on Figure 1.

7. Thumb wheel (pattern/horn) Varies the pattern/horn air flow of the spray gun
NOTE: Turning the thumb wheel downward increases the flatness of the spray
pattern on a standard nozzle or narrows the cone pattern on a conical nozzle. Both
increase atomization.
13.Fitting Attaches a grounding air hose to the WM-1 spray gun
14.Trigger lock Prevents trigger movement
NOTE: Sliding the trigger stop all the way up prevents trigger movement. Sliding the
trigger stop all the way down enables trigger movement.
15.Trigger Controls coating material flow from the WM-1 spray gun
NOTE: Always draw the trigger fully during WM-1 spray gun operation.
Installation
Standard Nozzle Installation
1.Trigger the WM-1 spray gun. Thread the fluid tip
into the extension(5). Use the Nordson supplied
wrench to secure the fluid tip.
2.Place the air cap (19) on the fluid tip (18) and the
retaining ring (1) over the air cap. Position the air
cap and hand-tighten the retaining ring onto the
extension (5).
Conical Nozzle Installation
1.Trigger the WM-1 spray gun. Thread the valve
seat (4) into the extension (5). Use an open-end
wrench to secure the valve seat.
2.Set the nozzle (3) on the valve seat. Place the
cap (2) over the nozzle. Hand-tighten the retaining
ring (1) onto the extension (5).
Hose Connections
Perform these steps if you ordered the WM-1 spray
gun with hoses, part 176 526:
1.Route and connect the fluid hose (10) to your
Iso-Flo HD unit.
2.Route and connect the grounding air hose (11) to
the air supply regulator.

Perform these steps if you ordered the WM-1 spray
gun without hoses, part 176 501:
1. Loosen the captive screw (6) securing the rear
slide (8). Remove the rear slide.
2. Remove the screws (16) securing the trigger (15).
3. Loosen the captive screws (17) securing the
extension (5).
4. Carefully insert the fluid hose (10) through the gun
body. Apply a thin film of dielectric grease (9) onto
the fluid hose (10) as illustrated.
5. Insert the fluid hose (10) into the extension (5).
6. Tighten the captive screws (17) to secure the
extension (5).
7. Install the trigger (15) and secure using the
screw (16).
8. Insert the fluid hose strain relief lug (20) into the
pocket in the gun handle.
9. Install the rear slide (8) and tighten the captive
screw (6).
10. Connect the grounding air hose (11) to the
fitting (13).

Troubleshooting procedures for these and other
common film-build faults are listed in Table 3. If you
cannot solve your problem with the information given
here, contact your local Nordson representative or
distributor for help.
