Chapter 1 - Getting Started
Introduction
The FM-8/FM-9 from JADAK®are fixed mount bar code scanners that utilize area imaging
technology to read popular linear (1D), stacked linear, and matrix (2D) bar codes. With its small
compact size it is ideal for decoding and imaging in space constrained systems. The FM-8 and
FM-9 are functionally equivalent, with the FM-8 being a “straight-on” unit and the FM-9 being
right angle. The FM-8 has a detachable cable while the FM-9 has a captive “pig-tail” style
cable,
About This Manual
This User’s Guide provides installation and programming instructions for
the FM-8/FM-9. Product specifications, dimensions, warranty, and
customer support information are also included. JADAK’s bar code
imagers are factory programmed for the most common terminal and
communications settings.
If you need to change these settings, programming is accomplished by
scanning the bar codes in this guide or by sending the serial commands
shown under the bar codes.
Note: An asterisk (*) next to an option indicates the default setting.
CAT-FM8M-XXXXL/ CAT-FM9M-XXXXL Class 2 Laser Warning
The most commonly used versions of the FM-8/FM-9 use an LED based aiming system.
Optionally, some versions of the FM-8/FM-9 contain a laser based aiming system that is fully
compliant with eye safety certifications.
CAUTION This device emits CDRH/IEC Class 2 laser and IEC Class 1M light.
Do not stare into beam.
Some versions of the FM-8/FM-9 use a 650 nm laser and a pattern forming element to generate a laser
aiming pattern which represents the imager's field of view throughout its entire depth of field. The
pattern's center dot indicates the center of the field of view.

JADAK® FM-8/FM-9 Models
There are ten main models of the FM-8/FM-9 imager, with 5 different interface options and 2
different image resolution options. Refer to the chart below to determine the models that can be
used with your host interface. There are numerous other configuration options including options
for different illumination LED colors, laser or LED aimers, alternate optical focus and color
imagers. Please contact JADAK if an alternate configuration would be beneficial to your
application as there are many other options available:
•Different optics configurations
•Laser aimer
•Different cable styles

JADAK®FM-8/FM-9 Imager Identification
On the side of your FM-8/FM-9 scanner you will see a label as shown below:
Part Number
Serial Number
Part Number:
The part number is a 7 to 12 digit string indicating the product configuration as it leaves JADAK’s
factory.
Please consult JADAK for configuration information.
Serial Number:
The serial number format is as follows: YYMMDD-NNN
Where:
YY = Year
MM = Month
DD = Day
NNN = Incremental number of unit built on the YY/MM/DD date

Reading Techniques
The imager inside the FM-8/FM-9 has a viewfinder or aimer that projects a green beam or a
bright red crosshair that corresponds to the imager’s horizontal/vertical field of view. The aimer
should be centered over the bar code, but it can be positioned in any direction for a good read.
Linear bar code 2D Matrix symbol
The aiming beam is smaller when the imager is closer to the code and larger when it is farther
from the code.
Symbologies with smaller bars or elements (lower mil size) should be read closer to the unit.
Symbologies with larger bars or elements (higher mil size) should be read farther from the unit.

Chapter 2 - Interface Settings
Connecting the FM-8/FM-9 with Serial Port
1. Turn off power to the terminal/computer.
2. If using an RS-232 connection, connect the serial interface cable’s RJ-50 connector to the FM-
8/FM-9 and to the matching port on the host (in the example images below a computer acts as
the host).
FM-8 FM-9
3. Connect Power to the FM-8/FM-9 cable.
4. Once the FM-8/FM-9 has been fully connected, power up the computer or host.
Note: If connecting the FM-8/FM-9 using an RS-232 interface, all communication
parameters between the engine and host must match for correct data transfer through the
serial port.

JADAK FM-8/FM-9 User’s Manual
RS-232 Default Settings
Use the command below to program the default RS-232 communication settings.
This programs the FM-8/FM-9 Imager for an RS-232 interface at 115.200 baud, No Parity,
8 Data bits and 1 stop bit.
Note: The FM-8/FM-9 must be power cycled after programming this interface!
RS-232 Baud Rate
By setting the correct Baud Rate, the data from the scanner will be sent to the terminal at
the specified rate. Scan one of the following codes to program the FM-8/FM-9 to the
required Baud Rate to connect to the host terminal/computer. Default = 115200 Baud.
Note: The FM-8/FM-9 must be power cycled after programming this
interface!
* 115200 Baud rate 57600 Baud rate
38400 Baud rate 19200 Baud rate
9600 Baud rate 4800 Baud rate
2400 Baud rate 1200 Baud rate

RS-232 Word Length
The 232WORD command defines the settings for Parity, Data bits and Stop bits.
If an application requires only ASCII Hex characters 0 through 7F decimal (i.e. text, digits
and punctuation) select 7 data bits. For applications that need the full ASCII set
supported, select 8 data bits per character.
Scan one of the following codes to program the FM-8/FM-9 to the required Parity, Data
bits and Stop bit(s) required for connecting to the host terminal/computer.
Default = No Parity, 8 Data, 1 Stop.
Note: The FM-8/FM-9 must be power cycled after programming this interface!

Connecting the FM-8/FM-9 with USB Port
1. If you are using USB Serial Comm Port Emulation interface, you must first load the driver for
that interface onto your computer. The driver is available from your JADAK technical support
contact.
Note: No driver is required when using the USB HID Keyboard interface.
2. Turn off power to the terminal/computer.
FM-8 FM-9
3. Plug the USB-A connector of the FM-8/FM-9 cable into a free USB port on your
terminal/computer.
4. Once the FM-8/FM-9 has been fully connected, power up the terminal/computer.

USB Interface Options
USB HID Keyboard Emulation
Scan the following code to program the FM-8/FM-9 for USB HID Keyboard mode.
Note: you’ll need to have a hardware trigger-line set up in order to operate the FM-
8/FM-9 in USB HID Mode for scanning programming barcodes, as you won’t be able to
send any serial commands anymore!
Note: The FM-8/FM-9 must be power cycled after programming this interface!
USB HID Keyboard
USB COM Port Emulation
Scan the following code to program the FM-8/FM-9 to emulate a regular RS-232-based
COM port.
Note: The FM-8/FM-9 must be power cycled after programming this interface!

Keyboard Control Character Output
Use these commands to enable or disable sending a text string instead of a control
character. For instance, instead of sending out an actual Carriage Return (hex: 0D), it
will send [CR] as readable ASCII text. Default = Disabled.
Note: These commands are not applicable for RS-232 FM-8/FM-9 versions.
Enable * Disable
Numeric Keypad Mode
Use these commands to send the data as if it were entered on a numerical keypad.
This of course only applies to numbers 0 to 9. Default = Disabled.
Note: These commands are not applicable for RS-232 FM-8/FM-9 versions.
Enable * Disable
