General
IMPORTANT: All the instructions provided in this manual must be followed carefully to ensure that the heating
system operates correctly. The installation must also be compliant with local electrical heating system requirements.
WARNINGS: The nVent RAYCHEM WinterGard Cable is an electrical device which must be designed and installed
correctly. Follow all design, installation, test and operating instructions to ensure proper operation and to prevent
electrical or fire hazard. De-energize all power circuits before installation or servicing.
• Keep ends of trace heaters and kit components dry before and during installation.
• The drain wire shall be connected to an earth terminal.
• The presence of a trace heating shall be made evident by the posting of caution signs or marking where clearly visible.
SCOPE:
This manual focuses on the installation of the WinterGard Cable in screed and sand for long-term structural
stability. nVent can supply a different series of suitable products for laying in screed/concrete, asphalt or other applications.
WinterGard Cable Heating System (1)
The WinterGard heating cable is a constant wattage
heating device for a permanent installation in concrete,
screed or sand under paving slabs or in asphalt.
It is a VAC or VAC system regulated by a control
unit. (Control unit provided separately.)
WinterGard Cable is a pre-terminated and ready to install
heating cable with cold lead connection and a power
output of W/m of heating cable. The cold lead cable
has a length of m and should be installed in a conduit.
The minimum cable spacing is cm. With cm spacing
the power output will be approx. W/m².
Spacer, junction box (6) and supply lead (9)
The plastics fixing strips (VIA-Strips-PL) maintain the correct spacing of - cm. For asphalt the metal spacer
should be used.
Extension of the cold leads can be made via a junction box. The connection between the control panel and the
junction box is made by a suitable supply lead.
For installation in asphalt the sensor cables must be protected by a suitable conduit pipe (suitable to °C short
terms) or be laid under the asphalt layer in the substrate underneath. The conduit pipe is sealed at the end so the
asphalt cannot seep in.
Ensure that the heating cable and cold lead cable connections (splice joint) are completely enveloped (Ø cm) by
the asphalt (allow asphalt to cool to temperature of approx °C before pouring it over the splice joint and end seal)
and without air pockets. This work needs to be done before the asphalt pouring of the entire surface will be executed.
Controller (8)
nVent offers control units specially designed for ramp heating applications. They incorporate combined temperature
and moisture sensors to ensure efficient operation of the system.
Panels (7)
nVent offers a range of standard panels specifically designed for ramp heating applications. Each panel contains a
built in control unit, plus circuit breakers and a residual current device (RCD).

Layout Considerations
Area to be heated
Determine the exact area to be heated, e.g. wheel tracks. Consider the following factors:

Preparing sub-surface
The heating cable should be installed on a stable subsurface. In suspended structures the substratum may consist of
finished slabs, prestressed concrete or a suspended structure with poured concrete. The heating cable can be laid on

are removed. Ramps on a solid substratum do not require any additional thermal insulation. Appropriate preparations
should be made for installing the temperature and moisture sensor.
Cable resistance and insulation resistance test
Testing the heating cable involves the measuring of the conductor resistance and the cable electrical insulation
resistance. The conductor resistance is measured with an ohmmeter. A deviation of up to % from the nominal
resistance is permissible. See table on page .

The insulation resistance should be measured with the aid of a Vdc ( Vdc minimum) insulation resistance tester.

Keep connection end of cable dry before and during installation.
All connections and electrical testing should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
• The heating cable should be separated from other heat sources such as luminaries and chimneys.
• Minimum bending radius of the heating cable while laying shall not be less than about six times of the
cable diameter.
• Allow sufficient drying or the curing period of the concrete/asphalt after installing the heating system and
before energizing the heating system.
• Never alter the heating cable length in any circumstances
• Never provide power supply in reel form of the cable and roll form of the mat.
• Do not use excessive force to pull the cold leads otherwise it may damage the hot-cold splice.
The heating cable should not be:
• cut or damaged,
• installed across expansion joints or separate concrete slabs.
Minimum cable spacing is 10 cm
The heating cable must be secured to the underlying surface to prevent movement during the installation.
The cold lead cable should be protected in a conduit. The entire length of heating cable should be covered by wet
sand-cement mixture, screed, or dry sand or asphalt depending on the selected top surface.

If the heating cable can not be fixed to a reinforcement mesh, the installer should use the plastic spacer (for asphalt
metal VIA-SPACER) or other fixing method to keep the cable spacing consistent.
Slab preparation & reinforcement
• In the case of a concrete slab, the mesh or reinforcement bar must be adequately supported so that it is not
disturbed during the concrete pour.
• The reinforcement must be positioned so that the heating cable will be mm below the surface of the concrete.
• The reinforcement must be positioned at the correct distance below the surface of the concrete to within ± cm.
• Where mesh is used, it must be strong enough that it will not “droop” when walked on for the installation of the
heating cable. Use a mesh grid of at least mm. A grid spacing of mm is most practical.
• Where a reinforcement bar is used, arrange its spacing to match the requirement of the heating cable spacing.

Installation of conduit for cold lead
The conduit for the cold lead should be arranged such that the connection between heating cable and cold cable is
fully embedded in the slab.
In case of asphalt installation, the cold leads should be protected by a suitable conduit pipe (suitable to °C short
terms) and its ends sealed so that asphalt does not seep in. Take the cold lead of the cable through conduit pipe into
the junction box.

• Visually check the heating cable for damage.
• Verify that the heating cable has been correctly fastened to the spacers.
• Verify that the desired spacing has been maintained and that the heating cable has been kept away from
expansion joints, sharp edges, etc.
• Verify that the heating cable has been installed at the correct depth.
• Visually check the connection leads for correct installation.
Make a layout sketch
Record the layout of each circuit, with particular reference to the position of the connection heating cable - cold cable
and the heating cable end. (a photograph is also an acceptable reference of the layout.)
Perform the resistance tests
Carry out the resistance tests on each circuit to detect any damage that may have occurred during or after
installation. The insulation resistance reading must be greater than
If the insulation resistance is less than this, the cable may have been damaged. Where possible,
locate the fault and rectify.
Record the values for each circuit on the Installation Test Record.
If concrete is to be poured straight away, go to section “Concrete Pouring” (overleaf).
Protect the installation
Prevent pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area where the heating cable has been installed.
Avoid disturbing the reinforcing steel or mesh.

• check for signs of heating cable damage
• check the cable spacing
• check the height of the heating cable

Perform the resistance tests on each heating cable circuit to detect any damage which may have occurred after installation.
Record the results on the Installation Test Record.
When the concrete team arrives, have them verify the resistance results and sign the Installation Test Record.
WARNING: Precautions should be taken during the concrete pour to prevent the heating cable from being
exposed to unnecessary abuse:
• Avoid excessive concrete drop heights.
• Take care when using shovels and rakes during the pour.

Monitor the insulation resistance continuously during the pour.
If the insulation resistance drops below
Locate the damage and repair it.
After the embedding
After completion of all concrete works, perform the resistance tests and record the values on the
Installation Test Record.
Supplementary work
Work such as drain installation, placement of anchor bolts and cutting of expansion joints is done after the initial
concrete pour. Consult the drawing of the layout so that damage to the heating cable is avoided.
It is desirable to monitor the heating cable by insulation resistance testing during any activity which could lead to
heating cable damage.
After all such work has been completed perform the resistance tests and record the results on the Installation Test Record.
Top surface installation
Checks
Perform the following checks before top layer installation, paving or applying the asphalt:
• Check for signs of heating cable damage.
• Check the spacing and below-surface depth of the heating cable, if applicable.
Resistance tests
It is advisable to perform the resistance tests on all the heating circuits immediately before paving or asphalt pouring
to detect any damage which may have occurred after installation. Record the resistances of each heating circuit on

WARNING: Asphalt installation: In order not to damage the cables, heavy machinery (Rollers or asphalt laying

Drain Tracing System with Self-Regulating Heating cable GM2-XT
Purpose
The drain tracing system ensures that melt water can drain away.
Note: the drain tracing circuit should be controlled by the same control system as the other heating circuits.

The insulation resistance test detects damage to the heating cable such as cuts or punctures. It should be carried
out using a Vdc instrument. Lower voltage instruments are less sensitive and are not recommended. The
instrument should have a test voltage of not less than Vdc.
