UNPACKING AND SETUP
Each scale is individually packed in a carton
specially desiiPted to protect the scale and all its
vital working parts. Upon unpacking the scale,
care should be taken not to grasp it by the beam,
but rather lift it by the base beneath the center post.
Save the rubber washer used in packing and in-
sert between parallel loop and base when scale is
not in use.
A reasonably flat and level surface should be
selected on which to use the scale. On such a
surface a very near balance should be attained when
all of the poise are set to their respective zero marks.
In the event that the scale does not balance ex-
actly at zero when set up on its working surface,
there are two knurled balance adjustment nuts pro-
vided in the beam to make the necessary balance
correction. These nuts are locked against each other
to prevent any movement in shipping or in use.
When adjustments are made, unlock the nuts by
turning them apart about a quarter turn; they can
then be easily moved. When the correct balance
has been restored, be sure to lock the balance nuts
against each other so that there will be no chance
for their movement and hence a change in the
zero balance.
It is also advisable to check the zero balance
periodically since foreign material may accumulate
on the scoop or beams and cause a slight change in
the balance position. Whenever the scale is moved,
the zero balance must be rechecked, since it will be
affected by an appreciable change in the inclination
of the working surface on which the scale rests.

WEIGHING
Before proceeding with weighing make sure the
scale is set up as described above.
The determination of a weight on the 4·in·1
Scale is a very simple and rapid operation. The
material to be weighed is placed in the scoop with
both Doises at the zero marks. Next, manipulate the
poise until a balance position is again obtained. The
weight of the specimen can then be read directly
from the beams through the indicator panels.
You will note that the lower beam is notched at
50 gram to 500 gram intervals and the lower poise
is equipped with a unique device enabling it to be
used as either a straight sliding poise, or as a poise
with a notch that will fall into definite locations.
Various type weighings should be made as follows:
1. LBS/Bushel on 1 pint sample or kg/hi on 0.5
litre sample. Use poise in slide position, read
lower indicator panel. To insure accurate re-
sults, fill bucket with No. 151 Filling Hopper.
2. Percentage Readings-The scale is equipped to
read dockage or moisture percentage directly on
a 500 gram sample. The large poise, set ir'
"Notch" position, is set at 450 gram and the
small poise is set at 50 gram. A 500 gram sam-
ple is then weighed out. After weight loss, the
sample is reweighed by moving the large poise
to the left to tl->~ tirst notch position which
causes the beam to rise and then moving it back
to the right one notch causing the beam to go
back down: the small poise is then moved to the
left until the beam balances. The percentage can
then be read to the nearest .1 %by combining
the readings of the two poises. If percentage
readings to only the nearest 1%are desired,
the large poise can be used alone, in "Slide"
position, keeping the small poise at initial 50
gram position.
3. Weight in Grams-(Lower Poise in "Notch"
Position) Read values in upper indicator panel.
Set lower poise to nearest 50 gram notch. Add
intermediate values with upper poise.
4. Weight in Ounces-Lower beam only. Poise in
"Slide" position, read value in lower indicator
panel. (Except Model 14M).
