1 INTRODUCTION
This manual contains installation, operation and maintenance instructions for
Adventurer SL balances. Please read the manual completely before using the
balance.
1.1 Description
Adventurer SL balances are precision weighing instruments that will provide you
with years of service, if cared for properly. Adventurer SL balances are available
in capacities from 65 grams to 8100 grams.
1.2 Features
Adventurer SL balances are equipped with many standard features. These
include:
• AC Adapter operation (AC Adapter included)
• Battery operation depending on model (batteries not included)
• Weighing, Parts Counting, and Percent application modes.
• In-use cover
• Integral security bracket
• Weigh below hook
1.3 Safety Precautions
Please follow these safety precautions:
• Verify that the input voltage printed on the AC Adapter matches the local AC
power supply.
• Use the balance only in dry locations.
• Do not operate the balance in hostile environments.
• Do not drop loads on the platform.
• Do not place the balance upside down on the platform or platform mounting
cone.
• Service should be performed only by authorized personnel.

2. INSTALLATION
2.1 Unpacking
Carefully remove your Adventurer SL balance and each of its components from
the package. Save the packaging to ensure safe stroage and transport.
2.2 Installing Components
Use the illustrations and instructions below to identify and assemble your
Adventurer SL model with its components. All components must be installed
before using the balance.
2.2.1 Assembly of Models AS312, AS612, AS811, AS1502,
AS3101, AS3102, AS6101, AS8100
1. Insert the sub-platform on the cylindrical cone located in the center of
the balance. Align the sub-platform so that it is fully seated on the cone.
2. Place the weighing pan on the sub-platform.

2.2.2 Assembly of Models AS64, AS214, AS313
2. Carefully remove each of the five (5) glass draft shield sections from its
packing. You will note that two (2) of these are plain, two (2) contain
handles, and the other is set in a plastic frame. These sections or panels
comprise the front and back, side doors, and top (respectively) of the Draft
Shield. The Draft Shield contains four (4) upright posts and two (2) cross
members which act as a framework for insertion of the panels.
1. Insert the Platform Assembly on the Cylindrical Cone in the center of the
balance.
3. Install the plain glass panels to form the front and back of the draft shield.
• Select a plain glass panel and insert the bottom edge of the glass in the
recessed slot in front of the balance, as shown.
• As you push the top edge of the glass side panel toward the cross-
member, reach inside the top of the framework and depress the small clip
located under the cross-member.
• Release the clip when the glass panel is fully inserted.
• Press the glass panel into the framework until you feel the glass slip into
place.
• Repeat these steps to install the other plain glass panel on the opposite
side of the framework.

4. Install the glass doors in the sides of the Draft Shield framework.
Note: The glass doors must be inserted in the Draft Shield framework before
you insert the top door; likewise you must remove the top door before
you remove the side doors.
• Hold and position each door so that the handle is near the front of the
balance and the small notch on the bottom edge of the door is lined up
with the tab that protrudes from the side of the balance housing
(shown below).
• Insert the top edge of the glass door into the recessed area under the top
cross-member of the Draft Shield framework.
• Slide the notch on the bottom edge over the tab and slip the door in
place.
5. The door may now be opened by sliding it toward the back of the balance.

6. Install the top door panel.
• Insert the top door in the Draft Shield by holding the door vertically over the
top of the Draft Shield framework, as shown.
• Position the back edge of the door so that it lines up with two small hinges
located on the rear cross-member.
• Gently press the door onto the hinges until it snaps into place.
• Tilt the door forward to close.

2.3 Selecting the Location
Locate the balance on a firm, steady surface. Avoid locations with excessive air
current, vibrations, heat sources, or rapid temperature changes.
2.4 Leveling the Balance
Before the balance is used, the feet should should be adjusted so that the scale is
level with the surface. This will enable accurate weighing. You will see a level
bubble indicator in a small round window on the front of the balance. Level the
balance by adjusting the leveling feet so the bubble is centered in the circle, as
seen below.

2.2.3 Assembly of Model AS153
1 Insert the sub-platform on the cylindrical cone in the center of the balance.
2. Place the weighing pan on the sub-platform.
3. Attach the Draft Shield by inserting the round bottom edge in the circular
recessed slot, as shown.
4. Place the metal cover on top of the Draft Shield.

2.5 Connecting Power
2.5.1 AC Adapter
Connect the AC Adapter to the wall outlet. Connect the plug to the receptacle on
the rear of the balance.
2.5.2 Battery Installation
Some Adventurer SL models operate with batteries. To install batteries, remove the
pan and its components.

To protect the cone from damage while installing batteries,
do not rest the balance upside down.
Remove the battery compartment cover from the bottom of the balance.
Install 4 AA (LR6) batteries in the compartment, aligning the batteries according
to the + and - symbols.
For use with CSA Certified (or equivalent approved) power source,
which must have a limited circuit output.
2.6 Initial Calibration
When the balance is first installed, it must be calibrated to ensure accurate
weighing. You will need appropriate calibration weights available before
beginning calibration. Refer to Section 4.1 for calibration weight information.
Refer to Sec. 3.5.1 for calibration instructions.

3.3 Application Modes
The Adventurer SL balance includes Weigh, Count, and Percent application modes.
To use these application modes, they must be turned on (SET ON) in the Mode Sub-
menu. The default mode, Weigh, has been SET ON at the factory. The other modes
are SET OFF.
3.2 Button Control Functions
The balance is operated using two multi-function buttons located on the front of the
balance. Button labels indicate the functions of each button. Operation of the buttons
is described in these instructions according to the function being performed.
3.3.1 Weigh Mode
Use the Weigh Mode to determine weight using a selected unit of measure. Several
units of measure are available, including grams. The balance will weigh only in
grams until other units of measure are SET ON in the Unit Sub-menu (See Section
3.5.4).

If an APW has already been established,

with an average weight per piece of 4.99 g.
3.3.1 Weigh Mode (Cont.)

To access the Weigh mode, press and hold
Mode until the display shows WEIGH.
Press Zero to zero the balance.
Place objects to be weighed on the pan to
display the weight.
The example displays a 200 gram weight.
3.3.2 Count Mode
Use the Count mode to count parts of uniform
weight. Refer to Section. 3.5.3 to set the
Count mode ON.
When the pieces indicator (PC) is displayed,
place the quantity to be counted on the pan.
The example shows 141 pieces.
To access the Count mode, press Mode until the display shows COUNT.
Establish an Average Piece Weight (APW).
Each time a new type of part is to be counted, the nominal weight of one piece
(Average Piece Weight) must be established using a small quantity of pieces. The
Average Piece Weight (APW) is stored in memory until replaced by a new APW.
Put the specified number of pieces on the pan when the desired sample size is
displayed. To abort the APW, press and hold No. Otherwise press YesYes

Count
The display indicates the number of pieces
to be used to establish the new APW.
If a different sample size is preferred, press No until the desired sample size is
displayed. Choices are Put 5, Put 10, Put 25, Put 50 or Put 100.

3.3.3 Percent Mode
Use this mode to measure the weight of a sample as a percentage of a reference
weight. Refer to Section. 3.5.3 to set Percent Mode On.
3.3.2 Count Mode (Cont.)
APW Optimization
APW Optimization automatically adjusts the Average Piece Weight when a sample
size between one and three times the original sample size is placed on the pan. The
display shows APW.OPT each time the APW is optimized.

settings are found in the Mode Sub-menu. The factory default for APW Optimization

3.4 Menu
3.4.1 Menu Structure
The Adventurer SL Menu Structure consists of three levels.
The first level consists of the CALIBRATION, SETUP, MODE, UNIT and END Sub-
menus. The second level consists of the Menu Items contained in each Sub-menu.
The third level consists of Settings for each Menu Item.
3.4.2 Menu Navigation
The diagram above depicts navigation of the Adventurer SL menu through use of the
Yes and No buttons. Solid arrows point to the content displayed when Yes is pressed.
Dashed lines indicate the display that results when No is pressed.

3.4.3 Changing Settings
Settings may be changed by performing the following steps:

With the balance turned off, press and hold Yes until MENU appears on the
display. Release the button to display Calibrate (CAL) on the first level of the Menu
(See Section. 3.4.1 Menu Structure). Each Menu Item on this level represents a
Sub-menu.

3.5 Balance Settings
Refer to Section 3.4 (above) for information on navigating the Menu.
3.5.1Calibration Sub-menu
The Calibration Sub-menu is used to calibrate the balance for accurate weighing.
Adventurer SL balances may be calibrated in two ways: Span Calibration or Linearity
Calibration.
3.5.1.1 Span Calibration
Span Calibration is the basic method used to set the balance's weighing range
using two weight values: zero and a weight between 50% and 100% of the capacity
of the balance. Span Calibration is required before the balance is used the first time,
and every time the balance is moved to a new location.
To perform Span Calibration:
With the balance turned off, press and
hold On until MENU is displayed, then
