The Ozito HTR-550 Hedge Trimmer is designed for trimming and
shaping shrubs and hedges.
The rotating rear handle allows the user greater control to achieve
accuracy and perfectly manicured gardens.
Dual action cutting blades enhance cutting efficiency by giving a
quicker, cleaner cut.
Safety is of great importance, with this in mind, the hedge trimmer is
fitted with a dual handed safety switch which prevents accidental
starting, and a blade brake that stops the blades within 0.5 seconds
once the switch is released.
This product is intended for DIY use only.
Warning! When using mains-powered equipment, basic safety precautions,
including the following, should always be followed to reduce risk of fire, electric
shock, personal injury and material damage.
Read and understand the manual prior to operating this tool.
Save these instructions and other documents supplied with this tool for future reference.
The electric motor has been designed for 230V and 240V only. Always check that the
power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.
Note: The supply of 230V and 240V on Ozito tools are interchangeable for Australia
and New Zealand.
This tool is double insulated in accordance with AS/NZS 60745; therefore no
earth wire is required.
If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by an electrician or a power tool
repairer in order to avoid a hazard.
Note: Double insulation does not take the place of normal safety precautions when
operating this tool. The insulation system is for added protection against injury
resulting from a possible electrical insulation failure within the tool.
Using an Extension Lead
Always use an approved extension lead suitable for the power input of this tool. Before
use, inspect the extension lead for signs of damage, wear and ageing. Replace the

GENERAL SAFETY RULES
!
!Warning! Read all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions listed
below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. The term
“Power Tool” in all of the warnings listed below refers to your mains
operated (corded) power tool or battery operated (cordless) power tool.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
1) WORK AREA
a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the
presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks
which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool.
Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2) ELECTRICAL SAFETY
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any
way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools.
Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes,
radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric
shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a
power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or
unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or
moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable
for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of
electric shock.
3) PERSONAL SAFETY
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when
operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or
under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention
while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such
as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for
appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before
plugging in. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in
power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A
wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in
personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This
enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
HTR-550 Manual.qxd 8/31/09 2:09 PM Page 6

f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair,
clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long
hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection
facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of these devices
can reduce dust related hazards.
4) POWER TOOL USE AND CARE
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your
application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for
which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power
tool that can not be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and or the battery pack from the
power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing
power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the
power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools, unplugged & out of the reach of children and do not
allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate
the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts,
breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tools
operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many
accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp
cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these
instructions and in the manner intended for the particular type of power
tool, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be
performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from intended could
result in a hazardous situation.

reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and
knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use
of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.
i) Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with
the appliance.
5) SERVICE
a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only
identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool
is maintained.
b) If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its
service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR HEDGE TRIMMERS
7
This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with
reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and
knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use
of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.
Recommendations for the use of a residual current device with a rated residual
current of 30mA or less.
Keep all parts of the body away from the cutter blade. Do not remove cut
material or hold material to be cut when blades are moving. Make sure the
switch is off when clearing jammed material. A moment of inattention while

OPERATION
8
Cord retainer
When attaching an extension cord to the
Trimmer, hook the end of the extension cord
into the cord retainer (11) built into the rear of
the Trimmer’s housing (Fig. 1). Using the
retainer prevents accidental disconnection of
the trimmer and extension cords plug and
socket.
Always be sure to route the cord away from the
work area to prevent it from coming near the
blade. Decide how you want to route the cord
before starting work.
Start trimming at the point nearest the electrical
outlet, then move away while working.
The cable will then be pulled through the area which has already been cut and thus
reduce the danger of itself being cut.
Warning! Do not use the hedge trimmer in the rain or store the hedge trimmer
in wet conditions.
Warning! If cordset is cut or damaged remove it immediately from the power
point. This product requires the use of two hands to ensure safe operation.
Inspect the area to be cut before starting. Remove any objects or debris that
could be thrown, jammed or become entangled in the blades.
Power-ON LED Light
The Hedge Trimmer features a power-ON LED light that will illuminate once the
trimmer is connected to power. This acts as a safety device and notifies the operator
that the tool is receiving power.
Switching on
For your safety the Hedge Trimmer is designed
with a two handed safety switch. If only one
switch is squeezed, the tool will not operate.
This ensures both hands are on the tool body
during use. It prevents accidental start up and
also keeps both hands away from the blades
during operation.
To turn the Hedge Trimmer ON, squeeze the
front handle switch (5) and then the rear handle
switch (7) (Fig. 2).
Switching off
To turn the Hedge Trimmer OFF, simply release either switch.

OPERATION (cont.)
Blade brake
The Hedge Trimmer is fitted with a motor brake which will stop the cutting blade
with 0.5 seconds as soon as either switch is released.
Note: When the unit is switched off and the motor brake operates there may be
some sparking (or flashing) visible in the area of the upper motor ventilation slots.
This is normal and will not damage the machine.
Rotating the rear handle
This hedge trimmer is fitted with a rotating rear handle.
It can be rotated
counter clockwise
45° and 90° and
clockwise 45° and
90° (Fig. 3).
To rotate the rear handle (6) push the rotating handle
button (8) towards the rear of the hedge trimmer
(Fig. 4) and rotate the rear handle left or right to the
desired position.
Note: The handle has 5 positions, 45° and 90º to the
left, 0° in the centre and 45° and 90º to the right.
The rotating handle button (8) will lock at any of
these positions.
Working position
Maintain proper footing and balance and do not overreach. Wear safety goggles,
non-slip footwear and gloves when trimming. Hold the tool firmly in both hands
and turn the tool ON. Always hold the trimmer with one hand on the front handle
and one hand on the rear handle. Never hold the tool by the blade safety guard (3).
Trimming new growth
Use a wide sweeping motion, feeding the blade teeth through the twigs is most
effective. A slight downward tilt of the blade, in the direction of motion gives the
best cut. Do not use the Trimmer for cutting stems greater than 20mm. Use the
Trimmer only for cutting normal shrubbery found around houses and buildings.
Level hedges
To obtain exceptionally level hedges a piece of string can be stretched along the
length of the hedge as a guide.

10
Side-trimming hedges
Hold the Trimmer and begin at the bottom, sweep up (in this way the debris will fall
away and not build up around the blades).
Shaping
The hedge should be trimmed to achieve a trapezoidal form, that is, it should widen
toward the bottom at both sides. This improves the penetration of light to the lower
extremities. A general guideline is approximately a 10cm slant for each 1 metre of
hedge height.
Cutting sequence
First cut both sides, starting at the bottom and work to the top: this prevents cuttings
from falling into the area where you are still working.
Trimming the top
Where the branches have grown extremely long, cut back the hedge in several stages.
The shorter cuttings will be better suited for composting.
General information
When older hedges are to be cut back a substantial amount, use pruning shears or
some other device to trim thicker branches (greater than 20mm diameter) to the
desired length before starting work with the Hedge Trimmer.
To shape precisely, run a taught line between the extreme edges of the hedge and
then trim along the length of the line.
Ensure the blades do not come into contact with any object made of hard material
that could damage the blades, such as fencing wire or metallic plant supports.
Lubrication
Warning! Always ensure that the trimmer is switched off and the plug is removed
from the power point before making any adjustments.
After each use, clean the blades and lightly lubricate with general purpose oil or spray
lubricant (not included).
1. Remove any deposits with a brush and apply a light film of oil.
2. Use biodegradable oil.
Maintaining the blades
Warning! Always ensure that the trimmer is switched off and the plug is removed
from the power point before making any adjustments.
IMPORTANT! Wear sturdy protective gloves at all times. Periodically check blades for
sharpness and damage.
The blade teeth can be sharpened using a flat file. Sharpen the cutting edges and
maintain the rounded corners.
Oil the blades after each use using a general spray lubricant.
If there is significant blade damage, have them replaced.

MAINTENANCE (cont.)
11
Cleaning and storage
Ensure all nuts, bolts and screws are tight and that the safety guard (3) is
fitted correctly.
All damaged and worn parts should be replaced in order to maintain the hedge
trimmer in a safe working condition.
Keep the ventilation vents of the tool clean at all times, if possible, prevent foreign
matter from entering the vents.
After each use, blow air through the tool housing to ensure it is free from all dust
particles which may build up. Build up of dust particles may cause the tool to
overheat and fail.
If the enclosure of the tool requires cleaning do not use solvents but a moist soft
cloth only. Never let any liquid get inside the tool; never immerse any part of the
tool into a liquid.
CAUTION: Do not use cleaning agents to clean the plastic parts of the tool. A
mild detergent on a damp cloth is recommended. Water must never come into
contact with the tool. Special care should be taken when cleaning and adjusting
the blades. This should only be done with the Hedge Trimmer switched off and
disconnected from the mains supply to prevent injury.
The hedge trimmer should always be stored with the blade guard fitted and
secured in place.
Store the tool, instruction manual and accessories in a secure and dry place.
Ensure the cord and any extension cord used are checked for damage and are
coiled correctly without kinks.
Never spray the machine down with water, keep it dry at all times.
When not in use the hedge trimmer can be hung using the hole in the impact
guard (1), mount on the wall with a suitable screw and dowel.
Carbon brushes
When the carbon brushes wear out the tool will spark and/or
stop. Discontinue use as soon as this happens. They should
be replaced prior to recommencing use of the tool. Carbon
brushes are a wearing component of the tool therefore not
covered under warranty. Continuing to use the tool when
carbon brushes need to be replaced may cause permanent
damage to the tool. Carbon brushes will wear out after
many uses, when the carbon brushes need to be replaced
take the tool to an electrician or a power tool repairer for a quick and low cost
replacement. Always replace both carbon brushes at the same time.
Note: Ozito Industries will not be responsible for any damage or injuries caused
by the repair of the tool by an unauthorised person or by mishandling of the tool.
