1. Introduction
1.1. Package Contents
Open the package carefully, and make sure that none of the items listed below are missing. Do not
discard the packing materials. In case of return, the unit must be shipped in its original package.

1.2. General Description
The SW24-GBP Enterprise-Class rack-mountable Gigabit Ethernet switch is designed for maximum
performance and convenience. It incorporates QoS functionality to allow you to prioritize devices on
your network according to your clients needs. All of this is preconfigured for you to minimize
installation time.
All cables install from the rear, for the clean-finished rack appearance that custom installers and
their clients prefer. The SW24-GBP can be configured by Web GUI, serial command-line interface
(CLI), or Telnet. Plug-and-play and auto-negotiation capabilities allow the switch to auto-detect a link
partner with the best available speed.
The SW24-GBP is cased in a heavy-duty 1U housing designed for easy installation and maintenance.
(Rack-mount hardware is included.) The SW24-GBP supports Nway auto-negotiation to automatically
detect network speed (10/100/1000 Mbps) and Full/Half duplex mode. And Auto-MDI/MDI-X port
functionality eliminates the need for crossover cables. Rich diagnostic blue LEDs provide real-time
status monitoring. The SW24-GBP combines two SFP expansion slots to support Mini-GBIC modules.
Series modules can be smoothly connected with Gigabit networking to ensure optimal networking
speed and performance. Finally, the SW24-GBP supports both Command Line and Web Graphical
User Interfaces.

1.4.2. Functional Descriptions
1.4.2.1. PHY Monitoring and Port Mode Set-up
The software continually monitors the PHYs to aid in setting up the switch ports. If the link is
active, the software determines the current speed, duplex mode, and pause capabilities of
the PHYs by polling them every 100 ms.
1.4.2.2. Flow Control
Flow control (back pressure) is supported in both full-duplex and half-duplex. Flow control
can be enabled or disabled on a per-port basis from the command line interface or from the
WEB GUI interface. If flow control is enabled for a port, the associated PHY is set to support
“Symmetric Pause,” but not “Asymmetric Pause.” If the station connected to the port also
supports “Symmetric Pause,” flow control is enabled on the switch port. Watermarks are set
to hard-coded values. Different values are used depending on whether flow control is enabled
or not, and depending on the current speed.

1.4.2.3. Aging
To prevent an automatically learned MAC address of a station that has been detached from
remaining in the MAC address table permanently, the aging function in the switch is activated
on a regular basis.
The period for which the aging function is performed is determined by the aging time
parameter. The period must be half the value of the aging time parameter in order to make
the aging time parameter comply with IEEE 802.1D.
For example, if the aging time parameter is 300 seconds, the period must be 150 seconds to
ensure that an unused MAC address will not remain in the MAC address table for more than
300 seconds. The aging time parameter can be set from the command line interface. The
default value is 300 seconds. Setting the aging time parameter to 0 disables the aging
function.
1.4.2.4. Link Aggregation
Link aggregation groups (or channels) can be defined statically. LACP (Link Aggregation
Control Protocol) is also supported. The maximum number of aggregation groups is 8. The
software will automatically detect when a link has gone down and reassign packet distribution
to the other links in the group.
1.4.2.5. Quality of Service
Various classifications and prioritizations are supported to enable Quality of Service for real-
time applications such as VoIP (Voice over IP).
1.4.2.6. Test Functions
Internal and external loopback tests can be run on the switch ports using the command line
interface. In the internal loopback test, the PHYs are set in loopback mode and the ports are
set to copy frames to the CPU capture buffer. For each speed, a single frame of fixed size (128
bytes) is sent from the CPU and the software checks that the frame is received in the CPU
capture buffer within a proper time. If a port fails, an error code is shown (1 if the frame was
received, but corrupted, 2 if the frame was not received).
In the external loopback test the ports must be connected pair-wise through external cables
- port 0 and port 1 must be connected, port 2 and port 3 must be connected, etc. The ports
are tested pair-wise. A frame is sent from the CPU to a port and the software checks that the
frame is received in the CPU capture buffer from the port’s counterpart within a proper time.
A frame of fixed size (128 bytes) is sent for each speed. If a port fails, an error code is shown
(1 if the frame was received, but corrupted, 2 if the frame was not received).

1.6. The Rear Panel
Ports
The SW24-GBP has 24 10/100/1000 ports, and two SFP fiber ports (SFP 1 and SFP 2). A Mini-GBIC is
required to use the SFP ports. The SFP 1 Mini-GBIC slot shares the same port with the copper RJ45
port 23, and the SFP 2 Mini-GBIC slot shares the same port with the copper RJ45 port 24. Only the
Mini-GBIC or the RJ45 port can be used at the same time, but not both.
Power Receptacle
For compatibility with the diverse electrical service standards around the world, the switch comes
with a power supply that can operate from 100 to 240VAC, 50/60Hz. Please make sure that your outlet
standard is within this range.
To power on the switch, plug the female end of the power cord firmly into the receptacle of the switch
and the other end into an electric service outlet. Once the power cord is plugged in, check if the power
LED is lit to ensure normal operation.
2. Hardware Installation
The switch can be placed on a desktop, or mounted in a rack. Installation is simple; all features of the
switch can be operated easily by attaching the appropriate cables and turning the power on.
Before installing the switch, we strongly recommend:
Placing the switch in a well-ventilated area, with a minimum of 25mm (1 inch) space around the
unit.
Placing the switch and related components away from electrical noise sources such as radios,
transmitters, and broadband amplifiers.
Not placing the switch in a high-humidity or moist environment.

2.1. Desktop Installation
Attach the provided rubber feet to the bottom of the switch to keep the switch from slipping. The
recommend position for the feet is marked with squares.
Install the switch on a level surface that can support the weight of the unit and related components.
Plug the female end of the provided power cord into the switch and plug the male end into the power
outlet.
2.2. Rack-mount Installation
Rack mounting facilitates orderly installation when a series of networking devices are installed. The
switch is supplied with rack mounting brackets and screws.
Procedures to rack-mount the switch:
1. Disconnect all cables from the switch.
2. Place the unit on a hard, flat surface with the front facing you.
3. Place a mounting bracket over the mounting holes on one side of the unit.
4. Insert the screws and fully tighten.
5. Repeat the two previous steps for the other side of the unit.
6. Insert the unit into the rack and secure with screws.
7. Reconnect cables.
2.3. Installing Network Cables
1. Crossover or straight-through cable. All the ports on the switch support Auto-MDI/MDI-X
functionality. Either straight-through or crossover cables can be used to connect the switch
with PCs and other devices such as switches, hubs, or routers.
2. Category 3, 4, 5 or 5e UTP/STP cable. To make a valid connection and obtain optimal
performance, use the appropriate cables for the transmitting/receiving speeds. To choose a
suitable cable, refer to the following table.

2.4.1. Configuring the Switch
The SW24-GBP can be configured and managed using a Web browser or command console. The
steps for logging in and configuring the switch through the Web-based GUI are explained below.
The section that follows gives instructions for configuring the switch using the command line
interface.
3. Web-based Configuration:
Log in to the Web interface
The default values are:
IP Address: 192.168.1.201
Password: None
In order to log in to the SW24-GBP, you must first configure the TCP/IP settings of your PC/notebook.
Follow these steps:
1. In the Windows Control Panel, double-click Network Connections and double-click the
connection of your Network Interface Card (NIC). The Local Area Connection Properties dialog
appears:

Web-Based configuration (continued)
2. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) dialog
appears, where you can configure the TCP/IP settings of your PC.
3. Select Use the following IP Address and type the IP address and subnet mask, as in the example
above. (Be sure the IP address and subnet mask are on the same subnet as the SW24-GBP.)
4. Click OK.
5. Click OK to close the dialog, and click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog.
3.1. Configuration
To configure the SW24-GBP using a Web browser:
1. Type the IP address of the SW24-GBP (default: 192.168.1.201) in the address bar of the
browser and press Enter.

2. After connecting to the IP address, the web-browser displays the login page. Leave the
password field blank.
After logging in, the main page of the graphical user interface (GUI) appears. This is the System
Configuration window which is a link in the Navigation Menu on the left side of the screen.
The navigation drop-down menu on left is divided into four main sections, which will be described in
the sections that follow.
3.1.1. System
This page displays the basic system properties of the SW24-GBP and allows you to configure them.
The System Configuration page is displayed upon login and can also be reached by clicking System
in the navigation menu.
The System page displays the port status, as in the figure below. A green color indicates that a
port is connected; black indicates that a port is not connected.

DHCP Enabled: If your SW24-GBP is connected to a DHCP server (such as a router), select
the DHCP Enabled checkbox to enable automatic IP address assignment.
Fallback IP Address: Type the IP address you wish to assign to the SW24-GBP when the
DHCP function is not enabled.
Fallback Subnet Mask: Type the Subnet mask you wish to assign to the SW24-GBP when
the DHCP function is not enabled.
Fallback Gateway: Type the Gateway address you wish to assign to the SW24-GBP when
the DHCP function is not enabled.
Management VLAN: Type the ID number for the VLAN you wish to give access to the GUI.
This will be the only VLAN with access to configure the switch. It is recommended to leave
the management VLAN on VLAN 1.

Name: Type the Username to be used to log on to the switch.
Password: Type the password that will be used to log on to the switch.
Inactivity Timeout: Type the amount of time in seconds the system will wait before
logging out due to inactivity.
SNMP Enabled: Select the checkbox enable SNMP (Simple Network Management
Protocol).
SNMP Trap destination: Type the IP address for the SNMP Trap.
SNMP Read Community: Type a password for SNMP read-only access.
SNMP Write Community: Type a password for SNMP Read/Write access.
SNMP Trap Community: Type a password for SNMP Trap access.
To save your changes, click Apply.
3.1.2. Port Configuration
To configure the network settings for individual ports, click Port Configuration in the navigation
menu.
Enable Jumbo Frames: Enable this function if you want larger frames sizes to be used. This
will allow data to be sent in fewer frames. However, make sure the receiving clients are
capable of receiving Jumbo Frames.
Intrusion Lock: This feature disables all ports when an Ethernet cable is disconnected to
prevent an intruder from disconnecting a cable and plugging a rogue device into the
network.

Port Configuration (continued)
This table displays the link status for each port on the SW24-GBP and allows the user to configure
the speed settings for each port and enable Flow Control.
Port: Displays the port number.
Link Status: Displays the current status of the port –“Down” if the port is inactive, or
displays the current speed of the port if the port is active.
Mode: This allows the user to manually specify a speed for the port. “Auto Speed” enables
auto-negotiation between the switch and client, while “Disable” causes the port to
become inactive.
Flow Control: Click to enable flow control. Use this setting if there is a possibility that the
sending machine is much faster than the receiving machine. Flow control ensures that a
fast sender will not outrun a slower receiver.
Drop frames: With this feature enabled, the SW24 will drop frames if excessive collisions
happen, rather than storing them and resending them.
