Firmware Upgrade for your
AT&T Paradyne DataPort 2001
Multimedia Communicator
Document Number 3730-A2-GK40-00
AT&T Paradyne is making continual improvements in
the DataPort 2001 Multimedia Communicator’s
operational firmware (the program executed by the
DataPort 2001’s internal microprocessors).
Developments soon to be released include
enhanced sound in VoiceSpan
t
mode, and the new
DataBurst
t
feature. DataBurst automatically
switches to data-only mode at the highest data rate
possible whenever an audio silence occurs (such as
the silences between spoken words), and switches
back to simultaneous audio and data mode when
there is sound to transmit. This means that data can
be transmitted much faster.
DataPort 2001s without DataBurst will not be
compatible with DataPort 2001s with DataBurst
in VoiceSpan mode. However, for a limited time,
AT&T Paradyne will provide a free firmware upgrade
that will permit you to add DataBurst and other
enhancements to your DataPort 2001. After April 15,
1994, the latest firmware release will be available to
you on the AT&T Paradyne Bulletin Board System
(BBS).
If you are unsure whether your DataPort 2001 has
the DataBurst feature, use your communications
program to issue the I1 (Identification) command. If
the DataPort 2001 responds with “230” or a larger
number, it has the DataBurst feature.
Upgrade Instructions
Follow these steps to check the BBS for the
availability of this release and to download it. You will
need a DataPort 2001, a PC, and communications
software.
1. Using your communications program, dial our
BBS at 813-532-5254.
2. Enter your full name and password.
If you are a first-time caller the system will ask
you for user information, including a password.
Make a note of the password you choose for
future use.
3. At the main menu enter: Vfor VoiceSpan –
DataPort 2001 Area.
4. At the VoiceSpan Menu enter: Dfor Download
in VoiceSpan DataPort 2001 Area.
5. A list of files is displayed, including firmware
release files. These have names that start with
REL and end with the version number and the
file extension .EXE. For example, firmware
release 2.30.10 is associated with filename
REL23010.EXE.
6. Enter D, a space, and a filename:
REL
xxxxx
.EXE (where
xxxxx
is the highest
release number available). Press <RETURN
or ENTER>.
7. Enter the Transfer Protocol that your
communications package uses, such as Z(for
ZMODEM).
8. Initiate the download sequence for your
communications package.
9. After the file has been transferred you may exit
the BBS and end the call.
10. Put REL
xxxxx
.EXE in its own directory and
type: REL
xxxxx
.EXE <RETURN or ENTER>.
11. REL
xxxxx
.EXE will explode into 3 files:
C0
xxxxx
E.CXD, HOW-2.TXT, and
DPDLCP.EXE.
12. Read HOW-2.TXT (using your text editor or
word processing program) for further
instructions. That document explains how to
load the firmware into your DataPort 2001.
Using DataBurst
VoiceSpan permits simultaneous audio and data
communication with a data rate of 4,800 bps.
DataBurst is a feature of VoiceSpan that affects the
audio and data being sent to you from a remote
DataPort 2001 in VoiceSpan mode. DataBurst
makes use of audio silences to transmit data at the
highest possible rate (up to 14,400 bps), which can
substantially improve throughput.
DataBurst is normally enabled when you are in
VoiceSpan mode. It can be turned off and on using
the %VA command: %VA0 disables and %VA1
enables DataBurst. The VoiceSpan Defaults
command %VF enables DataBurst (%VA1).
For more information about VoiceSpan, see the
VoiceSpan file on the BBS.
