4 Using the PePWave Devices
4 1 Pre-configuring PC Setup
Prior to t e Mes Connector configuration, a computer wit its Local Area Connection set to
a static IP address is required to pre-configure to t e same subnet as t e Mes Connector
(i.e. 192.168.2.X).
An ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties’ screen will pop up and set it as follows:
Click t e “OK” button to confirm t e c ange.
Now you are ready to start t e first time configuration of t e Mes Connector.

4 2 First Time Setup
On your PC, start a web browser, e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc. Visit an
Internet web site. If you are not associated to an access point, you s ould be redirected to
a logon page. Or you can go also go to t is URL

In t e field “SSID” under Wireless Settings, input t e access point’s SSID (sometimes it is
called t e “network name”). According to t e setting of t e Access Point you are
associating to, you may c oose a different “Aut entication setting”.
If “Static WEP key” or “WPA/WPA2-Personal” is selected for Aut entication, input t e
Encryption Key field as well. (T ere are also options of “802.1x wit dynamic WEP key” and
“WPA/WPA2-Enterprise”. You do not need to use t ese settings unless instructed to do so
by your ISP.)
Click t e “Save” button at t e bottom to complete.
You can now click t e “Connect” link on t e top bar and t en click t e “Connect” button to
associate wit t e access point.

4 3 Settings Details
4 3 1 LAN Interface

LAN Interface: To configure t e LAN interface’s IP address and subnet mask.
4 3 2 Wireless Settings

SSID: To configure t e SSID / ESSID / Network Name of t e wireless network to associate
to.
Radio Mode: T e available radio mode for Mes Connector 225-DX is 802.11a only.
Bit Rate: To fix t e 802.11 transmit bit rate. Available options depend on t e Radio Mode
c osen. If “auto” is c osen, t e device will c oose t e best bit rate dynamically and
automatically.
Authentication: Available options are “Open”, “Static WEP Key”, “802.1x wit dynamic
WEP key”, “WPA/WPA2-Enterprise” and “WPA/WPA2-Personal”. T e selection s ould be
according to t e setting of t e access point you are associating to. Data transferred are
encrypted under all modes except in “Open” mode. W en “Static WEP Key” or “WPA/WPA2-
Personal” is c osen, you s ould enter an encryption key in t e Encryption Key field. You do
not need to use “802.1x” and “WPA/WPA2-Enterprise” unless instructed to do so by your
ISP.
Bridging Support:
T is option enables t e transparent bridging functionality wit PePWave PolePoint to ac ieve
true layer two transparency.

Preferred AP: T e MAC address of a preferred access point can be entered ere. W en
t e preferred access point is found and its signal strengt is ig er t an t e “Min Signal
Strengt ”, it will connect to t is preferred access point, no matter t e ot er access points
are found even t ey ave ig er signal strengt or t e same SSID.
4 3 3 Roaming Settings

Roaming Settings: To configure and enable roaming among APs wit t e same SSID
and aut entication met od.
Bac ground Scanning Interval: T e time interval between background scans.
Roaming Threshold (Signal Level Gain): If t ere is anot er AP wit a signal level
greater t an t e signal level of connected AP by t e specified value, it will reconnect
to t e AP wit better signal.
4 3 4 Wireless IP Settings

Wireless IP Settings: T e IP address can be obtained automatically or configured
manually. If you c oose to manually configure t e IP address for your unit, enter t e fields
“IP Address”, “Subnet Mask”, “Default Gateway”, “Preferred DNS Server” and “Alternate
DNS Server”.
MTU Size: You may also set t e MTU Size to increase t e data packet size your unit can
andle at one time.
AP Settings: T e AP Settings will be covered in detail in t e subsequent section
Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point Configuration.

4 3 5 Restore and Reboot

WAI redirection: If t e device is not connected to an access point, and t e user is
accessing an Internet web site, t e settings control w et er to redirect t e web access to
t e web admin interface page or not. If t is is disabled and t e device is not connected, t e
browser will s ow a web access error message. T e user can still access t e web admin
interface by accessing to t e device’s LAN IP address. By default, t e LAN IP address is set
as ttp://192.168.2.100.
Web Password Protection: Sets t e password to protect t e web user interface.
Restore default settings: To restore t e device to default settings. W en t is option is
clicked, default settings will be restored and t e unit will be restarted.
Reboot: To restart t e device.

4 4 Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point Configuration
Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point is configured via t e CPE Setup tab. T e following sections
will provide information as a guide t roug t e configuration.
T e available Access Point (AP) settings for t e Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point functionality
are as follows:
Disable
Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point functionality is disabled
Configure Manually
Manual configuration of t e SSID, Aut entication, and Encryption Key values
corresponding to t e Access Point.
Configure Automatically
T e SSID, Aut entication, and Encryption Key values corresponding to t e Access
Point are automatically configured to be t e same as t e respective values t at
correspond to t e ISP’s network.

In Manual Configuration mode, t e SSID is manually entered.
Authentication can be one of t ree configurable values:
Open
For Open Aut entication Mode, no Encryption Key is necessary.
Static WEP Key
For Static WEP Key Aut entication Mode, a 64- or 128-bit Encryption Key is
required, and can be entered in eit er an ASCII or HEX representation.
WPA/WPA -Personal
For WPA/WPA -Personal Aut entication Mode, an Encryption Key, of at least 8
c aracters, is required.
• WPA/WPA -Enterprise (Applicable to Mesh Connector only)
For WPA/WPA -Enterprise Aut entication Mode, t e Radius server specified by
t is setting will be used.

4 4 3 Access Point Configure Automatically

Broadcast SSID: Wit t is option enabled, t e configured SSID will be broadcast suc t at
it can be detected by an SSID scan. Ot erwise, t e configured SSID will not be broadcast
suc t at it cannot be detected by an SSID scan. In order to connect wit t e access point,
t e SSID needs to be known by t e client.
Client Isolation: Prevent wireless clients connected to t e AP from communicating wit
eac ot er.
Keep AP: Wit t is option enabled, t e Wi-Fi Access Point will always on even if t ere is no
connection to t e mes network.
AP Transmit Power Adjustment: An option to retain a lower power setting for indoor
ome devices. Available options are between +8dBm and –15dBm.
Wit t e Access Point Configuration set to Configure Automatically, t e SSID,
Authentication, and Encryption Key values of t e Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point will be
configured to be t e same as in t e Wireless Settings section.
T is configuration mode is effectively equivalent to directly connecting 802.1b/g devices on
t e customers’ premises wit Citywide Wi-Fi.
Important Note:
In t e Wireless Settings section, if Authentication is set to eit er 80 .1x with
dynamic WEP key or WPA/WPA -Enterprise, t en t e Configure Automatically
option of t e Access Point Configuration becomes unavailable, because t e Integrated
Wi-Fi Access Point functionality currently does not support aut entication via t e
802.1x wit dynamic WEP key and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise met ods.

4 5 Test the Setup
To test to setup, you can now go to t e unit’s main page, enter t e user name and
password. T e realm (t e text box next to t e “@” sign) value can be left empty. T en
click t e Connect button.

4 6 Post-configuring PC Setup
At t is point an Internet connection s ould ave been successfully establis ed between t e
access point and t e PePWave Mes Connector. T e PC t at was previously pre-configured
to administrate t e unit as to reconfigure its Local Area Connection and be set to ‘Obtain
an IP address automatically’.
An ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties’ screen will appear. Please set as follows:
Click t e “OK” button to confirm t e c ange.
For now t e PC will send a DHCP request directly to t e access point via t e PePWave Mes
Connector, and an IP address will be assigned from t e access point to t e PC.
4 7 Firmware Upgrade
T e PePWave devices are able to c eck w et er a newer firmware (t e software running on
t e unit) is available. T is can be done in t e Firmware Upgrade section.
However, it is recommended t at you do not update t e firmware unless specifically
instructed by your ISP to do so. W en a firmware upgrade is needed, your ISP will eit er
give you instructions or upgrade t e firmware remotely.

4 8 Restore to Default Settings
T ere are two ways to restore t e Mes Connector 225-DX to default settings.
If you are able to access t e web admin interface, go to t e “CPE Setup” page, and click t e
Restore and Reboot button.
Ot erwise, you can also power up t e unit and wait for about 1 min. T en pus t e Reset
Button at t e panel side of t e unit and t en old it for 5 seconds. T e unit will restore t e
settings to factory default and reboot.
