Chapter 1
Introduction
With the innovative IP-based technology,PLANEThas turned theconventional
KVM switches into networking devices. The IKVM-1000 captures, digitizes and
compresses video signal,then transmits it with keyboard and mouse signals
throughIPnetwork.Multiple remote sites can monitor the samePCserver simulta-
neously.With SSL authentication anddataencryption,theIKVM-1000 provides a
non-intrusive solution for remote access and control. The remote access and
control software operates on its embedded processors only,but noton mission-
critical servers, so thatthere is no interference with server operation or decrease
on the networkperformance.

Hardware Installation
2.1 Operation Overview
The IKVM-1000 supports two operation scenarios. It can directlyconnect toone
server or toa KVM switch matrix for allowingmultiple servers access on a single
remote console.

2.2 System Requirement
Local Console: one PS/2 Keyboard, one PS/2 Mouseand onemonitor
Remote Console: computers installedwith TCP/IP
For an insecure connectionto the IKVM-1000, the followingbrowsers can be used:
•Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher on Windows 98, Windows ME,
Windows 2000 andWindows XP
•NetscapeNavigator 7.0 or Mozilla1.6on Windows 98,Windows ME, Windows
2000,Windows XP, Linux and other UNIX-like Operating Systems
In order to access theremote host systemusing a securelyencrypted connection,
you need abrowser that supports the HTTPS protocol.Strong securityis only
assured byusing akeylength of128 Bit. Some ofthe old browsers do not have a
strong 128Bit encryption algorithm.

For usingtheRemote Console windowof your managed host system, the browser
must come with aJava Runtime Environment version 1.1 or higher. Ifthe browser
has no Javasupport (such as on asmall handheld device), you are still able to
maintain your remote host systemusing the administration forms displayedbythe
browser itself. The recommended environment is Sun JVM 1.4.

2.3 Installation Procedures
1. Connect thepower supplyto IKVM-1000.
2. Connect a monitor to the VGA connector in LOCAL CONSOLE side.
3. Connect a keyboard tothe purple PS/2connector in LOCAL CONSOLE side.
4. Connect a mouse to the green PS/2 connector in LOCAL CONSOLE side.
For Single PC or Server Conncention
5. Connect aVGA cable (15-pin HDDBMale /Male) withthe Male side to both
ofthe PCand the HOSTside oftheIKVM-1000.
6. Connect one endto thePS/2 mouse port on the computer, and the other end
to the greenPS/2 connector on the HOSTside ofIKVM-1000.

7. Connect oneend tothePS/2 keyboard port on the computer, and theother
end to the purplePS/2 connector ontheHOSTside ofIKVM-1000.
8. You can also use anUSB cable (type Ato type B) toconnect the computer
and the USB port on IKVM-1000. ByusingUSB connection, youcan skip
step 6and7because themouse and keyboard signals will be transferred
through USB cable.
For Traditional KVM Conncetion
9. Use athree-in-1cable toconnect the HOSTside ofIKVM-1000andthe
console connectors oftraditionalKVM. The illustrationbelowis usingKVM-
800 to connect IKVM-1000.
10.Connect Ethernet cable and/or modemor both communicationports simulta-
neously,depending on how youwant toaccess IKVM-1000.

Initial Configuration
3.1 Default Settings
The communicationinterfaces ofIKVM-1000are all basedonTCP/IP.Itcomes
with the default settings as below.

Note: although there is a pre-configured IP address in IKVM-1000, it is disabled by
default.Tomake the IP effective, youmust use psetup.exe to locate the IKVM-
1000and change the “IP auto configuration”from “DHCP”to “None”.Please refer
to next subsection for detailed information.
3.2 Configuration via Setup Utility
Bydefault, the IKVM-1000will obtain its IP address froma DHCP server in the
network. Ifa DHCP server is found, itmayprovidea validIP address, gateway
address and net mask. Before you connect IKVM-1000 to your local network,
please make sure the corresponding configurationof your DHCP server is com-
pleted. It is recommended to reservea fixed IP assignment to the MAC address of
the IKVM-1000. Youcan find theMAC address labeledon the bottomside ofthe
metal housing.
Ifthis initial configurationdoes notmeet your local requirements, use the setup tool
to adjust the values toyour needs. The setup tool can be foundon the CD-ROM
delivered withthis package. You can followthe procedure described below.
1. Connect theIKVM-1000to the same networkas your administrative PC, or you
can use an USB cable (type A to typeB) to connect administrative PC and

IKVM-1000 directly. The USB connectivityonlysupported in windows
2000/XP/server 2003 and the response time ofUSB connection would be longer
than LANconnection.
2. Insert thebundled CD-ROM into the CD-ROM driveto initiatetheautorun pro-
gram. Clickon “Setup Utility”hyperlinkin the menu screen to execute the
program.
Ifthe menu screen is not shown, you canclick “Start”button and choose “Run…”.
When the dialog box appears, enter “E:\utility\psetup.exe”(suppose “E”is your
CD-ROM drive) and click “OK”.
3. Once the utilityis executed,it will search for availableIKVM-1000 automatically.
4. On the upper left corner, the MAC address ofthe IKVM-1000 is displayed. To
manuallydetect the MAC address again, press the button “Refresh Devices”.
The displayed MAC address is the same MAC address printed on the sticker
placed onthebottomofthe IKVM-1000. Ifthe IKVM-1000 is connectedviaUSB,
it is classified as an USB device and an appropriate drive letter is chosen for this
device.
5. On the lower right corner ofthe window,there are two buttons: “QueryDevice”
and “Setup Device”. Press the “QueryDevice”button to displaythe preconfig-
ured values ofthenetworkconfiguration. The values are displayed in the text
fields locatedabove. Ifnecessary, adjust the networksettings according to your
requirement. To savethechanges, enter “super”in the “Super user login”field
and “pass”in the “Super user password”field. Then press the “Setup Device
“button.
6. On the lower leftAuthentication field, youcan change the super user password
here. However, the super user name is fixed to “super”and can tbe modified.

The default super user password is “pass”. It is recommended to change the su-
per user passwordas soonas you get this device.
The Wireless LAN Configuration field is left for future enhancement.
3.3 Configuration via Serial Port
Usingaserialterminal, theIKVM-1000has aserial line interface (host side). This
connector is compliant with the RS 232 serial linestandard. The serialline has to
be configured with the parameters given as below.

When configuring with a serial terminal, press the reset button ofIKVM-1000 and
immediatelypress the “ESC ”keyon the keyboard of administrative PC. Youwill
see some device information, and a “=> ”prompt. There are four commands
available.
config: start configuration tool after bootup
defaults: set the device settings to factorydefaults
help: printonline help
reset: performa soft reset
When using “config”command, the following interactive options will appear:
IP auto configuration (non/dhcp/bootp) [dhcp]:
With this option, youcan specifywhether the IKVM-1000 should get its
networksettings fromaDHCP or BOOTPserver. ForDHCP, enter “dhcp”,
and for BOOTP enter “bootp”. If you do not specifyany ofthese, theIP auto
configurationis disabledandsubsequentlyyouwill beasked for the
following networksettings.
IP [192.168.1.1]:
This is the current IPaddress ofthe IKVM-1000.This optionis only
available ifIP auto configuration is disabled.
Net mask [255.255.255.0]:

This is the net maskofthe connected IPsubnet.This option is only
available ifIP auto configuration is disabled.
Gateway(0.0.0.0 for none) [0.0.0.0]:
This is the IP address ofthe default router for the connectedIP subnet. If
youdo nothave adefault router, enter 0.0.0.0. This optionis onlyavailable
ifIP auto configuration is disabled.
3.4 Keyboard, Mouse, and Video Configuration
Between the IKVM-1000 and thehost, there are two interfaces available for trans-
mitting keyboardand mouse signals: USB and PS/2. The correct operation ofthe
remote mouse depends on several settings, which will be discussed inthefollow-
ing subsections.
3.4.1Keyboard Settings
The IKVM-1000 settings for the host's keyboard type must be corrected in order to
make the remote keyboard workproperly.See Section5.4.2indetails.
3.4.2RemoteMouse Settings
Acommon issue with KVM devices is the synchronization between the local and
remote mouse cursors. TheIKVM-1000 addresses this situationwithan intelligent
synchronization algorithm.There are two mouse modes available ontheIKVM-
1000.
Auto mouse speed
The automatic mouse speed mode tries to detect the speedand
accelerationsettings ofthe host systemautomatically.Seethe
section belowfor a more detailed explanation.
Fixed mouse speed
This mode just translates the mouse movements fromthe Remote
Console in a waythat one pixel move will lead ton pixel moves on
the remote system. This parameter n is adjustable withthe scaling. It
should benoted that this works onlywhen mouse acceleration is
turned off on the remote system.
3.4.3Auto MouseSpeed and Mouse Synchronization
The automatic mouse speed mode performs the speeddetectionduring mouse
synchronization. Wheneverthe mouse does not move correctly, there are two ways
for re-synchronizing local and remote mouse:
Fast Sync

The fast synchronizationis usedtocorrect atemporary,butfixed
skew.Choose theoption using the Remote Console options menu or
press the mouse synchronizationhotkeysequence ifyoualready
definedone.
Intelligent Sync
Ifthe fast sync does notworkor themouse settings havebeen
changedonthehost system,use theintelligentresynchronization.
This method takes more timethan Fast Sync andcanbeaccessed
with the appropriateitemin the Remote Console option menu. The
intelligent synchronizationrequires acorrectlyadjustedpicture. Use
the autoadjustment function orthemanual correctionin theVideo
Settings panelto setup the picture. The Sync mouse button on top of
the Remote Console maybehavedifferently,depending on the
current state ofmouse synchronization.Usuallypressing this button
leads to afast sync,exceptinsituations where the KVM port or the
video mode changed recently.
Note: At first start, ifthe local mouse pointer is notsynchronized with the remote
mouse pointer, press the Auto Adjust Button once.
3.4.4Host System Mouse Settings
While the IKVM-1000 works with accelerated mice and is ableto synchronize the
local with the remote mouse pointer, there are the followinglimitations, which may
prevent this synchronization fromworking properly: (the following limitations do not
applyin caseofUSB andMouse Type “MS Windows2000and newer”.)
Special Mouse Driver
There are mouse driverswhich influence thesynchronization
process and lead to desynchronizedmouse pointers. If this happens,
makesure you do not use aspecialvendor-specific mouse driver on
your host system.
Windows XP Mouse Settings
WindowsXP knowsasetting named “improve mouse acceleration”,
which has to be deactivated.
Active Desktop
Ifthe Active Desktop feature ofMicrosoftWindowsis enabled,donot
use aplain background. Instead,use somekind ofwallpaper. As an
alternative,you couldalso disable the Active Desktop completely.

Navigate your mouse pointer into the upper left cornerofthe applet
screen and move it slightlyforth and back.Thus the mouse will be
resynchronized. Ifre-synchronizing fails, disablethemouse accel-
eration and repeattheprocedure.
3.4.5Single andDouble MouseMode
The information above applies to the DoubleMouse Mode, where remote and local
mouse pointers are visible and need to be synchronized. The IKVM-1000 also
features another mode, the Single Mouse Mode, where onlytheremote mouse
pointer is visible. Activate this mode in the open Remote Consoleand clickinto the
windowarea. The local mouse pointer will be hidden and the remote onecan be
controlled directly.To leavethis mode, itis necessaryto define a mouse hotkeyin
the Remote Console Settings Panel.Press this hotkey to free thecaptured local
mouse pointer.
3.4.6Recommended Mouse Settings
For the different operating systems we can give the following advice:
MS Windows 2000/XP/2003 (Professionaland Server)
In general, werecommend the usage ofa mouse via USB.Choose USB without
Mouse Sync. For aPS/2 mouse, choose Auto Mouse Speed. For XP disable the
option enhance pointer precision in the ControlPanel.
SUN Solaris
Adjust the mouse settings either via xset m1 or use the CDE Control Panel toset
the mouse to 1:1, no acceleration. As an alternative you mayalso use theSingle
Mouse Mode.
MAC OS X
Werecommend usingthe Single Mouse Mode.
3.4.7VideoModes
The IKVM-1000 recognizesa limited number ofcommon video modes. When
running X11on the host system, please do not use anycustommode lines with
special video modes. If youdo, the IKVM-1000 maynot be able todetect them.We
recommend using anyofthe standard VESA video modes, instead.

Chapter 4
Remote Usage
4.1 Prerequisite
The IKVM-1000features anembeddedoperating systemand applications offering
a varietyofstandardized interfaces. This chapter will describe both these interfaces,
and thewayto use theminamore detailedmanner. The interfaces are accessed
using theTCP/IP protocolfamily,thus theycanbeaccessed usingthe built-in
Ethernet port.
The following interfaces aresupported:
HTTP/HTTPS
The IKVM-1000 canbe entirelymanagedusingastandard webbrowser.
You canaccess the IKVM-1000 usingtheinsecureHTTPprotocol, or
using the encrypted HTTPS protocol.Whenever possible,use HTTPS.
Telnet
Astandard Telnet client can beusedto access anarbitrarydevice
connected to the IKVM-1000's serial port via a terminal mode.
The primaryinterface oftheIKVM-1000 is theHTTP interface. This is covered
extensivelyin this chapter. Other interfaces are addressed insubtopics.
In order to usetheRemote Console windowof your managed host system, the
browser has to come with aJava Runtime Environment version 1.1 or higher. Ifthe
browser has no Java support (such as on asmall handheld device), you are still
able to maintain your remote host systemusing theadministration forms displayed
bythe browser itself.
Important: We recommendinstallinga Sun JVM 1.4.

Using the Internet Explorer,open the menu entry “?”and “Info”to read about the
keylength that is currentlyactivated. The dialog box contains a linkthat leads you
to information on howtoupgrade your browser to a state ofthe art encryption
scheme. The picture belowshows the dialog box presented bytheInternet Ex-
plorer 6.0.
Newer web browsers do support strong encryption on default.
4.2 Login and Logout
4.2.1Login
Note: Your web browser has to accept cookies, or elselogin is not possible.
Launch your web browser. Direct itto the address of your IKVM-1000,which you
configured during the initialconfiguration. The address used might bea plain IP
address or a host and domain name, in the case whereyou have given your IKVM-
1000a symbolic name in the DNS. For instance,type the following in the address
line of your browser whenestablishing an unsecured connection:
http://<IP address ofIP-KVM>
When using a secure connection, type in:
https://<IP address ofIP-KVM>
This will lead youto the IP-KVM switch loginpage.
The IKVM-1000 has a built-in super user that has all permissions to administrate
the device:

Warning: Pleasemakesure tochangethesuper user passwordimmediatelyafter
youhave installedand accessed your IKVM-1000 forthe first time. Not changing
the pass phrase for the super user is asevere securityriskand might result in
unauthorizedaccess to theIKVM-1000andto the host systemincluding all possi-
ble consequences!
Havinglogged into the IKVM-1000 successfully, the main page oftheIKVM-1000
appears.
This page consists ofthree parts; each ofthemcontains specific information. The
buttons on the upper sideallowyou to navigate within the front end.
Return to the main page ofthe IKVM-1000 .
Open the IKVM-1000 remote console.
Exit fromthe IKVM-1000 front end.
The lower left frame contains a navigation bar and allowsyouto switch between
the different sections ofthe IKVM-1000. Within the right frame, task-specific infor-
mation is displayed that depends on the section you havechosen before.
Warning: Ifthere is no activityfor halfan hour, the IKVM-1000 will log you out,
automatically.A clickon one ofthe links will bring youbackto the login screen.
4.2.2Logout
This button logs outthecurrent user and presents a newlogin screen.
Please note that an automatic logoutwill be performed in case there is no activity
for halfan hour.

4.3 The Remote Console
Clicking on the icon opens an additional Remote Console window. The
Remote Consolewindowis aJava Appletthattriesto establishitsownTCP
connection tothe IKVM-1000. The protocol that is run over this connection is
neither HTTPor HTTPS, but RFB(Remote FrameBuffer Protocol).Currently,RFB
tries to establish aconnection to port number 443. Your local networkenvironment
has toallowthis connectiontobemade, i.e. yourfirewall and, incase youhavea
private internal network,your NAT(NetworkAddress Translation) settings have to
be configured accordingly.
In case the IKVM-1000is connectedto your localnetworkenvironment and your
connection to the Internet is available usingaproxyserver onlywithoutNATbeing
configured,theRemote Console is veryunlikelyto beabletoestablishthe
according connection. This is because today's webproxies are not capable of
relaying the RFB protocol.
In caseofproblems, please consultyour networkadministrator inorder toprovide
an appropriatenetworkenvironment.
Once theRemote Consoleis connected,it displays thescreen content ofyour host
system.The Remote Console will behave exactlyin the samewayas ifyouwere
sittingdirectlyin frontofthescreenofyour remote system.That means keyboard
and mouse can be used inthe usualway.However, be aware ofthe fact that the
remote systemwill react tokeyboard andmouse actions withaslight delay.The
delaydepends on thebandwidth ofthe networkwhichyou use toconnect tothe
IKVM-1000.
With respect to the keyboard, the veryexact remote representation might lead to
someconfusion as your local keyboard changes its keyboard layout accordingto
the remote host system.If youuse aGerman administrationsystem,and your host
systemuses aUS Englishkeyboard layout, for instance, special keysonthe
German keyboard will not workas expected. Instead, the keys will result in their US
English counterpart. You can circumvent such problemsbyadjusting the keyboard
of your remote systemto the samemapping as your local one.
The Remote Console windowalwaystries toshowthe remote screen withits
optimal size. That means it will adaptits sizeto thesizeofthe remote screen
initiallyand after the screenresolution ofthe remote screen has been changed.
However, youcanalwaysresize the Remote Consolewindowinyour localwindow
systemas usual.

4.3.1RemoteConsoleControl Bar
The upper part oftheRemote Console windowcontainsacontrolbar.Usingits
elements you can see thestate ofthe Remote Console andinfluence the local
Remote Console settings. A description for each control follows.
Special buttonto send the “Control+Alt+Delete”keycombination to theremote
system.
Auto Adjust Button

Pressing this button toactivate the mouse synchronizationprocess. Choose this
option inorder to synchronize the localwiththeremote mouse cursor. This is
especiallynecessarywhenusingacceleratedmouse settings onthe hostsystem.
In general, there is no need to change mouse settings on the host.
Single/Double MouseMode
Switches between the Single Mouse Mode (where onlythe remote mouse pointer
is visible)andtheDouble MouseMode(whereremote andlocal mouse pointers
are visible and needto besynchronized). Single mouse mode is onlyavailableif
using SUN JVM 1.3 or higher.
Clickon this button, an Options menu will appear:

Monitor Only
Toggles theMonitor onlyfilter on or off.Ifthe filter is switched on,no remote
console interaction is possible,and monitoring is possible.
ExclusiveAccess
Ifa user has the appropriate permission, he can force the Remote Consoles of
all other users to close. Noone canopen theRemote Console atthe same
time againuntil this user disables the exclusive access, or logs off.
