Preface
Thisnotebook computer incorporates the latestmobile technologiesin a slim and portablepackage. Thismanual should
answermost ofthe questions youhaveabout the day-to-dayoperation ofyour notebook computer.Youshould also take
advantageof the onlinehelp files thatare availablewith almost allof the programsshipped with yourcomputer.
We hope you enjoy your notebook computer.With proper care,your computer will provide you with years of productive
service.
Connecting the computer
Connectingthe computeris as easy as 1-2-3.
1. Insert the battery at anangle (1); press gently onthe battery (2) until it clicksinto place. Then slide thebattery lock to
thelock position(3).
Note: When using a battery pack for the first time, fully recharge the battery,then disconnect the
adapter to use up the battery before recharging again. Perform this action twice to condition the
battery pack.
2.Connect one end of theAC adapterto the DC-inport
onthecomputer’srearpanel(1);connect thepowercord
to the AC adapter (2) and the other end to a properly
groundedpower outlet(3).
3.Press thedisplay cover releaselatch (1)and openthe
display (2) to a comfortable viewing angle. Press the
powerswitch(3)toturn onthepower.ThePOST(power-
onself-test)routineexecutes and Windowsbeginsload-
ing.
Note: To turn off the power, use the Windows Turn
Off command to shut down the computer. If you are
unable to shut down your computer normally, press
and hold the power switch for more than four
seconds to turn off the computer. If you turn off the
computer and want to turn it on again, wait at least
two seconds before powering up.

Care and maintenance
Taking care of your computer
Your computer will serve you well if you take care of it.
• Do not expose the computer to direct sunlight.Do not place it near sources of heat,such as a radiator.
•Do not exposethe computer totemperatures below 0.C(32.F) or above50.C (122.F).
•Do not subjectthe computerto magnetic fields.
•Do not expose the computer to rainor moisture.
•Donot spill wateror any liquid on thecomputer.
•Do not subject the computerto heavyshock and vibration.
•Do not exposethe computer todust anddirt.
•Never placeobjectson topof thecomputer toavoiddamaging thecomputer.
•Never placethe computer onuneven surfaces.
Taking care of your AC adapter
Here are some ways to take care of your AC adapter:
•Do not connectthe adapter to any otherdevice.
•Do notstepon thepower cordor place heavyobjects ontop ofit.Carefully routethe powercordand anycables away
from all potential traffic.
•When unpluggingthe powercord, donot pullon thecord itself butpull onthe plug.
•The total ampere ratings of the equipmentplugged in shouldnot exceed theampere rating ofthe cord ifyou are
usingan extension cord.Also, the totalcurrent ratingof all equipmentplugged into asingle wall outlet should not
exceedthe fuserating.
Taking care of your battery pack
Here are some ways to take care of your battery pack:
• Use only batteries of the same kind as replacements.Turn the power off before removing or replacing batteries.
•Do not tamperwith batteries. Keepthem awayfrom children.
•Dispose ofused batteries accordingto localregulations. Recycleif at all possible.
Cleaning and servicing
Whencleaning thecomputer,follow these steps:
1.Power off thecomputer and removethe batterypack.
2.Disconnect theACadapter.
3.Use a softcloth moistenedwith water.Donot useliquid or aerosolcleaners.
Contactyour dealer orsee your servicetechnician ifany of thefollowing occurs:
•The computerhas beendropped orthe bodyhas beendamaged.
•Liquid hasbeen spilledinto theproduct.
•Thecomputerdoes notoperatenormally.

Simultaneous display

display output via the external display port or the S-video output port. Simultaneous display allows you to control the

Power management

Opening and closing the display
To open the display,press the display cover latch and lift up the cover,then tilt it to a comfortable viewing position.See
“Connectingthecomputer” onpage vii. Thecomputer employsamicroswitch thatturnsoff thedisplay(e.g., entersstandby
mode)to conserve powerwhen youclose thedisplay cover,and turns it back onwhen youopen thedisplay cover.
To closethe displaycover,fold it downgently untilthe displaycoverlatchclicksinto place.
Caution:To avoid damaging the display, do not slam it when you close it.Also,do not place any
object on top of the computer when the display is closed.
Indicators
Thecomputer has seven easy-to-read statusindicators (LEDs)under the displayscreen.

ThePowerand Standbyindicatorsare visibleevenwhenyou closethedisplay coversoyou can seethestatus ofthecomputer
whilethe cover is closed.

occurs.

5 Battery charge Lights when the battery is being charged
6 Caps lock Lights when Caps Lock is activated.
7 Num lock (Fn-F11) Lights when Numeric Lock is activated.
Keyboard
Thekeyboard hasfull-sized keyswith anembedded keypad,separate cursor keys,two Windowskeys andtwelve function
keys.
Special keys
Lock keys
Thekeyboard has three lock keyswhich youcan toggle onand off.
Lock Key Description
Caps Lock When Caps Lock is on, all alphabetic characters typed are in uppercase.
Num Lock When Num Lock is on, the embedded keypad is in numeric mode. The (Fn-F11)
keys function as a calculator (complete with the arithmetic operators +, -, *, and /).
Use this mode when you need to do a lot of numeric data entry. A better
solution would be to connect an external keypad. See “External keyboard”.
Scroll Lock When Scroll Lock is on, the screen moves one line up or down when (Fn-F12) you
press /\ or \/ respectively. Scroll Lock does not work with some applications.

Embedded numeric keypad
Theembedded numerickeypad functionslike adesktop numerickeypad. Itis indicatedby smallcharacters locatedon the
upperright cornerof the keycaps.Tosimplify the keyboard legend,cursor-controlkeysymbols arenot printedonthe keys.
Desired Access Num Lock On Num Lock Off
Number keys on embedded keypad Type numbers in a normal manner.
Cursor-control keys Hold Shift while using cursor-control keys. Hold Fn while using cursor-control
on embedded keypad keys.
Main keyboard keys Hold Fn while typing letters on Type the letters in a embedded
keypad.normal manner.
Windows keys
Thekeyboard hastwo keysthat performWindows-specific functions.
Key Description
Windows logo key Start button. Combinations with this key perform special functions.
Below are a few examples:
Windows logo key + Tab (Activates next Taskbar button)
Windows logo key + E (Explores My Computer)
Windows logo key+ F (Finds Document)
Windows logo key + M (Minimizes All)
Windows logo key + Shift + M (Undoes Minimize All)
Windows logo key + R (Displays Run dialog box)
Application key Opens the application’s context menu (same as right-click).
