DESCRIPTION OF THE CONSOLE
The innovative
console offers a
manual mode and
three pacer pro-
grams. The pacer
programs are
designed to help
you reach specific
exercise goals by
pacing your exer-
cise. You can
choose from a sta-
mina-building
Interval program,
an Aerobic pro-
gram, and a spe-
cial Fat Burn pro-
gram. As you
exercise, six moni-
tor modes will pro-
vide continuous exercise feedback. The monitor
modes are described below:
Speed—This mode shows your exercising pace,
in kilometres or miles per hour (see HOW TO
SELE T KILOMETRES OR MILES on page 13).
Time—If you select the manual mode, this mode
will show the elapsed time. If you select one of
the three pacer programs, this mode will count
down the time remaining in the program.
Distance—This mode shows the distance you
have stridden, in kilometres or miles.
Lap—This mode shows the number of laps you
have completed. One lap equals 0.25 kilometres
or miles.
alorie—This mode shows the approximate
number of calories you have burned.
Scan—This mode displays the above five
modes, for 5 seconds each, in a repeating cycle.
HOW THE PACER PROGRAMS OPERATE
When you use a
pacer program,
two columns of
bars will appear in
the display. The
left column repre-
sents a target
pace, and the right
column shows
your actual exercising pace. The target pace will
change periodically during the program; as the target
pace changes, simply adjust your exercising pace to
keep both columns at the same height. Importa t: The
target pace is a goal pace. Your actual pace may be
slower tha the target pace, especially duri g the
first few mo ths of your exercise program. Be sure
to exercise at a pace that is comfortable for you.
The three graphs
on the console
show how the tar-
get pace will
change during the
programs. During
the Aerobic
program (P2), for example, the target pace will gradu-
ally increase during the first half of the program, and
gradually decrease during the last half of the program.
Each program will last twenty minutes.
STEP-BY-STEP CONSOLE OPERATION
Before the co sole ca be operated, two batteries
must be i stalled (see assembly step 6 o page 7).

CONDITIONING GUIDELINES
The following guidelines will help you to plan your
exercise program. Remember that proper nutrition
and adequate rest are essential for successful results.
EXERCISE INTENSITY
Whether your goal is to burn fat or strengthen your
cardiovascular system, the key to achieving the
desired results is to exercise with the proper intensity.
The proper intensity level can be found by using your
heart rate as a guide. For effective exercise, your
heart rate should be maintained at a level between
70% and 85% of your maximum heart rate as you
exercise. This is known as your training zone.
You can find your training zone in the table below.
Training zones are listed according to age and physi-
cal condition.
Bur i g Fat
To burn fat, you must exercise at a low intensity level
for a sustained period of time. During the first few
minutes of exercise, your body uses easily accessible
carbohydrate calories for energy. Only after the first few
minutes of exercise does your body begin to use stored
fat calories for energy. If your goal is to burn fat,
adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart
rate is near the low end of your training zone as you
exercise.
Aerobic Exercise
If your goal is to strengthen your cardiovascular sys-
tem, your exercise must be “aerobic.” Aerobic exer-
cise is activity that requires large amounts of oxygen
for prolonged periods of time. This increases the
demand on the heart to pump blood to the muscles,
and on the lungs to oxygenate the blood. For aerobic
exercise, adjust the intensity of your exercise until
your heart rate is near the middle of your training
zone.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEART RATE
To measure your
heart rate, first
exercise for at
least four min-
utes. Then, stop
exercising and
place two fingers
on your wrist as
shown. Take a
six-second heart-
beat count, and multiply the result by 10 to find your
heart rate. For example, if your six-second heartbeat
count is 14, your heart rate is 140 beats per minute.
(A six-second count is used because your heart rate
will drop rapidly when you stop exercising.) Adjust the
intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is at the
desired level.
WORKOUT GUIDELINES
Each workout should include the following three
important parts:
A warm-up, consisting of 5 to 10 minutes of stretching
and light exercise. A proper warm-up increases your
body temperature, heart rate, and circulation in prepa-
ration for exercise.
Trai i g zo e exercise, consisting of 20 to 30 min-
utes of exercising with your heart rate in your training
zone. (During the first few weeks of your exercise
program, do not keep your heart rate in your training
zone for longer than 20 minutes.)
A cool-dow , with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching. This
will increase the flexibility of your muscles and will
help to prevent post-exercise problems.
To maintain or improve your condition, complete three
workouts each week, with at least one day of rest
between workouts. After a few months of regular exer-
cise, you may complete up to five workouts each week
if desired. The key to success is to make exercise a
regular and enjoyable part of your everyday life.
WARNING:
Before begi i g this or a y exercise pro-
gram, co sult your physicia . This is espe-
cially importa t for perso s over the age of 35
or perso s with pre-existi g health problems.
16
SUGGESTED STRETCHES
The correct form for several basic stretches is shown at the
right. Move slowly as you stretch—never bounce.
1. Toe Touch Stretch
Stand with your knees bent slightly and slowly bend forward
from your hips. Allow your back and shoulders to relax as you
reach down toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 15
counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Hamstrings,
back of knees and back.
2. Hamstri g Stretch
Sit with one leg extended. Bring the sole of the opposite foot
toward you and rest it against the inner thigh of your extended
leg. Reach toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 15
counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times for each leg. Stretches:
Hamstrings, lower back and groin.
3. Calf/Achilles Stretch
With one leg in front of the other, reach forward and place
your hands against a wall. Keep your back leg straight and
your back foot flat on the floor. Bend your front leg, lean for-
ward and move your hips toward the wall. Hold for 15 counts,
then relax. Repeat 3 times for each leg. To cause further
stretching of the achilles tendons, bend your back leg as well.
Stretches: alves, achilles tendons and ankles.
4. Quadriceps Stretch
With one hand against a wall for balance, reach back and
grasp one foot with your other hand. Bring your heel as close
to your buttocks as possible. Hold for 15 counts, then relax.
Repeat 3 times for each leg. Stretches: Quadriceps and hip
muscles.
5. I er Thigh Stretch
Sit with the soles of your feet together and your knees out-
ward. Pull your feet toward your groin area as far as possible.
Hold for 15 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches:
Quadriceps and hip muscles.
