Ports Description
10G SFP+
Each server has four 10G SFP+ ports.
Use the left two 10G SFP+ ports (port identiers eth4/eth5 left to right) to connect to
the Public network. The Public network is used by clients systems to utilize storage
managed by the VSky A1100.
Use the right two 10G SFP+ ports (port identiers eth6/eth7 left to right) to connect
to the Cluster network. The Cluster network is used by connected VSky servers for
syncing and management of storage resources.
The behavior of the LED indicators on each side of the row of ports is as follows: Left
side LEDs light on for Link, blink for Activity on the port. The Right side LEDs light
green for a 10Gbps connection and yellow for a 1Gbps connection. The Link/Act and
Speed LEDs are numbered from in sequence from eth4 to eth7 with eth4 at the top
and eth7 on the bottom.
Fibre Channel Use both Fibre Channel ports to connect to the Vess R2600S. This establishes the
data link to the RAID storage on the Vess R2600 and Vess J2600 enclosures.
1G Ethernet Connect one port (eth0) to the network used for management of the VSky server and
the Vess R2600.
USB
Use the USB ports to connect keyboard and mouse for conguration of the node to
which they are attached. These are also used for transferring les and software to the
system disks.
VGA Connect a VGA monitor for initial conguration of the node to which it is attached.
There is one VGA port per motherboard.

Front Panel
Feature Description
Gigabit LAN LEDs Lights when a valid link is established on the corresponding Gigabit LAN port
(from left to right, ports 4-1), blinks when there is activity on the port. Normally
only one LAN port (eth0) is used.
Message LED Indicates a hardware event.
SSD Access LED Lights when there is read/write activity on the SSDs.
Power button/LED Press this to power on the system. This lights when the system is powered on.
Locate LED Normally dark. Lights when the location feature is triggered.
Default setting button Press to return system conguration to default settings.
SDD disk drive carriers Two SSD drives are installed. Each drive carrier has a Status LED (uppermost)
and Activity LED (lowermost) on the right front side.

inStallatiOn Overview
The initial setup tasks covered in this document are described in three general categories:
• HardwareSetup: This includes mounting the 1U server in a standard equipment rack. Connecting the
cables needed for data ow and device management, connecting the power, and then powering on the
devices.
• ClusterSetup: This covers changing the network settings for the external public network and internal
Cluster (private) interfaces, conguring storage settings, node conguration, cluster management, and
license activation.
• VirtualStorageManagement: This covers use the Virtual Storage Creation Setup Wizard for setup.
Once you have completed this task, you are ready to congure the virtual storage to suit your preferred
application.

Hardware SetUp taSk liSt
The basic hardware setup tasks for the VSky A1100 and Vess R2600S described in the guide are as follows:
1. Unpacking the VSky A1100 1U Server
2. Installing the VSky A1100 in a rack
3. Monitor and keyboard connection for initial management tasks
4. Network and backend storage connections
5. Connect the power
6. Power on VSky A1100
Hardware required for a two node cluster
• 4 x Cat 6 Ethernet cable for connection to 1G management network
One cable for each node and one for each Vess subsystem.
• 1 x Gigabit Ethernet switch used for 1G management network
• 4 x Fibre Channel cables (LC/PC to LC/PC Multimode) for uplink from Vess R2600S
Two FC cables for each Vess-to-VSky uplink.
• 4 x 8G Fibre Channel transceivers (2 for each device)
Please check PROMISE website for list of approved transceivers
• 8 x Fiber Optic cables (LC/PC to LC/PC Multimode) for 10G connections to the Public network and
Cluster (private) network.
• 8 x SFP+ 10G Ethernet optic transceivers for VSky A1100
Please check PROMISE website for list of approved transceivers
• 2 x SFP+ switches equipped with 4 SFP+ 10G Ethernet optic transceivers. One switch for external public
network, used for client applications; and one switch for internal Cluster (private) network used to sync
cluster node.
Note that if only one server is being set up, then this second switch and associated cabling are not
needed since there is no server cluster.

inStall in rack
The device installs to the rack using the mounting rails shipped with the device (see rack mounting hardware
illustration). Note that each VSky A1100 server must connect to one Vess R2600S subsystem via direct attached
Fibre Channel connection. So plan the rack spacing accordingly.
Caution
* Make sure the rack rail cabinet and rack posts are stable and standing rmly on a level
surface.
* Only a qualied technician who is familiar with the installation procedure should mount and
install the device.
* The rails available for the device are designed to safely support that unit when properly
installed. Additional loading on the rails is at the customer’s risk.

2. Determine what height to place the server in the rack, then place the right
and left rack rails at the same height on in the right and left rack position.
This is a 1U server, so choose the mounting holes accordingly for your
rack system. Consult the documentation for your rack if you are unsure
which holes to use.
3. Secure the rails to the rack posts. Make sure the rack rails are properly
oriented in the rack.
To set the rails into the rack posts and secure the rails, follow these steps:
a. Press the spring lock then insert the studs into the
selected square holes on the rack post.
b. Press the spring lock on the other end of the rail and
insert the studs into the selected mounting hole on
the rack post. If necessary, extend the rail to reach
the post.
c. Use the rail screws and washers to anchor the rack
rail to the post.
d. Make sure the rack rail is aligned, secure, stable and
in the correct place.
e. Perform steps a through c above for the other rail.
f. Make sure the rack rails are aligned, secure, stable
and in place.
Follow these steps to install the mounting rails in an equipment rack.
1. On the right and left sides of the server, secure the Rail Latches to the server housing using the latch
screws, two screws for each latch.

4. Mount the server to the rack.
Make sure the side knots on both sides of the server are properly placed in the rack rail holders.

Now setup a keyboard and monitor, and connect the cables from the server to the Vess R2000 storage system.

Connect monitor and keyboard
In the rst part of the conguration procedure, you will use a text menu. This phase requires connecting a
keyboard and monitor to the server. After changing some network settings, further conguration can be done
through the Management network interface using a web browser to access the administrator GUI.
Use any USB port or the PS/2 port to connect a keyboard. Use the VGA port to connect a monitor. Turn on the
monitor and the server is ready to be powered on.

Network connections
Follow the instruction in the paragraphs that follow to complete the network connections for data and
management.
Note
The port identier of the 10G SFP+ ports becomes especially important when
you setup network settings for the Public and Cluster (private) interfaces. The two
networks use dierent IP subnets and are on physically separate switched networks.

1G network management connection
Connect to the 1G LAN for device management.
Note that this is also the network used for server and storage conguration after completing the initial
conguration tasks.
To establish the management path:
1. Attach one end of a Cat 6 or better Ethernet cable to the 1G Ethernet connector or NIC in the Host PC.
Attach the other end of the Ethernet cable to one of the ports on a Gigabit Ethernet switch.
2. Attach one end of an Ethernet cable to one of the ports on the same Gigabit Ethernet switch.
Attach the other end of the Ethernet cable to 1G LAN port eth0 on the rear panel of the VSky A1100.
If you are setting up a cluster, repeat Step 2 for every VSky server that will operate in the cluster.
Note
The 1G management network path is used for management of both the Vess R2600S
and VSky A1100. Make sure to connect all VSky A1100 and Vess R2600S devices with this
management connection.

Connect server to Public network
To complete the connection from the VSky A1100 to the Public network, connect suitable ber optic cables
from the 10G SFP+ ports eth4 and eth5on the VSky A1100 to a 10G SFP+ Ethernet switch used for the external
network. If you are setting up a server cluster, do this for each VSky A1100 node, using the same corresponding
ports on each node.
See “Data connections to storage, Public and Cluster (private) networks, and network management link” on
page 12 for illustration of ports.
Connect server to Cluster (private) network
To complete the connection from the VSky A1100 to the Cluster (private) network, use suitable ber optic
cabling to connect two 10G SFP+ ports eth6and eth7 on the VSky A1100 to a 10G SFP+ Ethernet switch used
for the internal Cluster (private) network. If you are setting up a server cluster, do this for each VSky A1100 node,
using the same corresponding ports on each node.
See “Data connections to storage, Public and Cluster (private) networks, and network management link” on
page 12 for illustration of ports.
Important
The Public network requires two SFP+ 10G ports on the server. Likewise, for cluster setup,
the Cluster (private) network requires two SFP+ 10G ports. You will be conguring network
settings for these ports later. Make sure the ports are on physically separate networks, and
make sure to use the same corresponding ports on each node in a cluster for the Cluster
(private) network and active Public network.

Please read the Vess R2000 Product Manual for a complete description of network
connections to the Vess R2600S, and other hardware and conguration
information not covered in this guide.

Fibre Channel connection
The data uplink from each paired Vess R2600S and VSky A1100 server is direct attached via Fibre Channel:
1. Use suitable Fibre Channel cabling to connect both Fibre Channel ports on the Vess R2600S to both
Fibre Channel ports on the VSky A1100.
2. Repeat this procedure for each Vess R2600S/VSky A1100 pair.
The illustration below provides a summary of the hardware setup for a two-node server cluster.
