unit controls.
The engine on this unit is covered by a
separate manual. Refer to the engine manual
for engine service recommendations.
Contact the engine manufacturer for a
replacement manual if necessary.
Your dealer must review important
information in this manual with you before or
upon delivery of the unit. It is your
responsibility to read and understand all
safety precautions and instructions in the
manuals. If you do not understand or have
difficulty following the instructions, initially
contact Charterhouse for the UK or Redexim
for outside the UK.

Practice usual and customary safe working
precautions. Learn applicable rules and laws

forth in this manual.
EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM
This equipment and/or its engine may include
exhaust and evaporative emissions control
system components required to meet EU
stage II emission regulations for small spark
ignition engines. Tampering with emission
controls and components by unauthorised
personnel may result in severe fines or
penalties. Emission controls and components
can only be adjusted by an Ariens dealer or
an authorized engine manufacturer's service
center. Contact your Ariens dealer
concerning emission controls and component
questions.

for your safety and the proper
use of your equipment.

with all controls and the safe use of the

in this manual. All messages on your unit
must be fully understood and carefully
followed. Safety decals on the machine are
explained below.
ALWAYS replace missing or damaged safety
decals. Replacement decal part numbers are
found in the parts manual for your machine

The following safety instructions are based
on ISO 5395 in effect at the time of
production.
Child or baby runover and
cut risk. Take care when in
motion. Be aware of
surroundings at all times.
Never allow passengers to
ride on the tractor.
Look behind when operating
the unit in reverse.

Read, understand, and follow all instructions
on the machine and in the manual(s) before
starting.
Be sure the area is clear of bystanders and
pets before operating. Stop machine if
anyone enters the area.
Improper use of power equipment can cause
serious permanent injury or death to the
operator or a bystander.
Understand:
• How to operate all controls
• The functions of all controls
• How to STOP in an emergency
• Braking and steering characteristics
• Turning radius and clearances
If the operator or the mechanic cannot read
the manual, it is the owner’s responsibility to
explain it to them.
ALWAYS train any inexperienced operators
and require them to read and understand all
manuals and decals.
Only allow responsible adults, who are
familiar with the instructions, to operate this
machine.
Only the operator can prevent and is
responsible for accidents or injuries
occurring to themselves, other people or
property.
Operator Age
DO NOT allow children under the age of 18
to operate any outdoor power equipment.
Local regulations may restrict the age of the
operator.
Children
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is
not alert to the presence of children.
Children are often attracted to the machine
and the mowing activity. NEVER assume
that children will remain where you last saw
them.
Be alert and turn machine off if a child enters
the area.
Before and while backing, look behind and
down for small children.

NEVER carry children, even with the
blade(s) shut off. They may fall off and be
seriously injured or interfere with safe
machine operation. Children who have been
given rides in the past may suddenly appear
in the mowing area for another ride and be
run over or backed over by the machine.
NEVER allow children to operate the
machine.
Use extreme care when approaching blind
corners, shrubs, trees or other objects that
may block your view of a child.
Keep children out of the mowing area and in
the watchful care of a responsible adult
other than the operator.
Personal Protection
DO NOT wear loose clothing or jewelry and
tie back hair that may get caught in rotating
parts.
Wear adequate outer garments.
NEVER wear open sandals or canvas shoes
during operation. Wear adequate safety
gear, protective gloves and footwear.
Wear proper footwear to improve footing on
slippery surfaces.
ALWAYS wear eye and ear protection when
operating machine.
Before Operating
Keep all nuts and bolts tight to be sure the
equipment is in safe working condition.
Maintain the machine to be in compliance
with the maintenance schedule.
Clean grass and debris from unit, especially
from around muffler and engine, to help
prevent fires.
Check parking brake operation frequently.
Adjust and service as required.
Inspect unit before each use for missing or
damaged decals and shields, correctly
operating safety interlock system, and
deterioration of grass catchers. Replace or
repair as needed.
Ensure Safety Interlock System is
functioning properly. DO NOT operate unit if
safety interlock is damaged or disabled.
Start and operate unit only when seated in
operator’s position. Disengage PTO and set
parking brake when starting engine.
NEVER interfere with the intended function
of a safety device or reduce the protection
provided by a safety device. Check their
proper operation regularly.
Keep machine free of grass, leaves or other
debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage
and remove any fuel-soaked debris.
Operation
Be sure the area is clear of bystanders
before operating. Stop machine if anyone
enters the area.
NEVER operate machine in a closed or
poorly-ventilated area.
ALWAYS maintain unit in safe operating
condition. Damaged or worn out muffler can
cause fire or explosion.
DO NOT operate machine while feeling
tired, ill or under the influence of alcohol or
other drugs.
DO NOT put hands or feet near rotating
parts or under the machine. Keep clear of
the discharge opening at all times.
DO NOT touch parts which are hot. Allow
parts to cool.
DO NOT operate machine without the entire
grass catcher, discharge guard or other
safety devices in place and working.
ALWAYS keep hands and feet away from all
pinch points.
Avoid slippery surfaces. ALWAYS be sure of
your footing.
NEVER carry passengers.
NEVER direct discharged material toward
anyone. Avoid discharging material against
a wall or obstruction. Material may ricochet
back toward the operator. Stop the blade(s)
when crossing gravel surfaces.
NEVER engage PTO when attachment,
including mower blades, is not in use.
ALWAYS turn off power to attachment when
not in active use such as traveling or
crossing driveways.
ALWAYS disengage PTO, stop unit and
engine, remove key, engage parking brake
and allow moving parts to stop before
leaving operator’s position.
NEVER engage PTO while raising the
attachment, including mower blades, or
when attachment is in the raised position.

Keep safety devices or guards in place and
functioning properly. NEVER modify or
remove safety devices.
DO NOT mow in reverse unless absolutely
necessary. ALWAYS look down and behind
before and while backing.
Stop engine before removing grass catcher
or unclogging chute.
Slow down before turning.
If you strike a foreign object, stop and
inspect the machine. Repair, if necessary,
before restarting.
NEVER leave a running machine
unattended. ALWAYS turn off blade(s), set
parking brake, stop engine and remove key
before dismounting.
Disengage blade(s) when not mowing. Shut
off engine and wait for all parts to come to a
complete stop before cleaning the machine,
removing the grass catcher, or unclogging
the discharge guard.
Know the weight of loads. Limit loads to
those you can safely control and the unit can
safely handle.
Operating Conditions
Lightning can cause severe injury or death.
If lightning is seen or thunder is heard in the
area, do not operate the machine; seek
shelter.
ALWAYS check overhead and side
clearances carefully before operation.
Watch for traffic when operating near or
crossing roadways.
Clear the area of objects such as rocks,
wire, toys, etc., which could be thrown by the
blades.
Check for weak spots on docks, ramps or
floors. Avoid uneven work areas and rough
terrain. Stay alert for hidden hazards or
traffic.
Use care when approaching blind corners,
shrubs, trees or other objects that may
obscure vision.
Dust, smoke, fog, etc. can reduce vision and
cause an accident.
Operate machine only in daylight or good
artificial light.
Slope Operation
Slopes are a major factor related to loss of
control and tip-over accidents, which can
result in severe injury or death. Operation on
all slopes requires extra caution. If you
cannot back up the slope or if you feel
uneasy on it, DO NOT mow it.
DO NOT operate on slopes of more than
15°.
Mow up and down slopes, not across.
Watch for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or other
hidden objects. Uneven terrain could
overturn the machine. Tall grass can hide
obstacles.
Use extra care while operating machine with
grass catchers or other attachments; they
can affect the stability of the machine. DO
NOT use on steep slopes.
Keep all movements on the slope slow and
gradual. DO NOT make sudden changes in
speed or direction, which could cause the
machine to roll over.
Avoid starting, stopping, or turning on a
slope. If the tyres lose traction, disengage
the blade(s) and proceed slowly straight
down the slope.
Operation on slopes may lead to loss of
steering control. When operating on slopes
be prepared to react to an emergency
situation:
• Immediately set parking brake.
• Turn off PTO and engine.
DO NOT try to stabilize the machine by
putting your foot on the ground.
DO NOT park on slopes unless necessary.
When parking on slope ALWAYS chock or
block wheels. ALWAYS set parking brake.
Choose a low ground speed so you will not
have to stop or shift while on a slope.
DO NOT mow near drop-offs, ditches, or
embankments. The machine could suddenly
roll over if a wheel goes over the edge or if
the edge caves in.
DO NOT bypass transmission or allow
transmission to free-wheel when on a slope.

Fuel
To avoid personal injury or property damage,
use extreme care in handling petrol. Petrol is
extremely flammable and the vapors are
explosive.
Ethanol blends must not exceed E10. Higher
ethanol content may cause your
machine to run hotter and damage your
engine.
Replace fuel cap securely and clean up
spilled fuel before starting engine.
Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and
other sources of ignition.
Use only an approved fuel container.
NEVER store the machine or fuel container
where there is an open flame, spark or pilot
light such as on a water or space heater or
other appliances.
NEVER fill containers inside a vehicle or on
a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner.
ALWAYS place containers on the ground
away from your vehicle before filling.
NEVER fuel the machine indoors.
NEVER remove fuel cap or add fuel with the
engine running. Allow engine to cool before
fueling.
Fuel is highly flammable and its vapors are
explosive. Handle with care. Use only an
approved fuel container with an
appropriately-sized dispensing spout.
NO smoking, NO sparks, NO flames.
Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of
the fuel tank or container opening at all
times until the fueling is complete. DO NOT
use a nozzle lock-open device.
NEVER overfill fuel tank. Replace fuel cap
and tighten securely.
If fuel is spilled on clothing, change clothing
immediately.
Towing
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations
for weight limits for towed equipment and
towing on slopes.
NEVER allow children or others in or on
towed equipment.
Tow only with a machine that has a hitch
designed for towing. DO NOT attach towed
equipment except at the hitch point.
On slopes, the weight of the towed
equipment may cause loss of traction and
loss of control.
Travel slowly and allow extra distance to
stop.
Accessories
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation
for wheel weights or counterweights
Check grass catcher components and the
discharge guard frequently and replace with
the manufacturer’s recommended parts,
when necessary.
Use only attachments recommended by
AriensCo that are appropriate to your use
and can be used safely in your application.
Batteries
Avoid electric shock. Objects contacting
both battery terminals at the same time may
result in injury and unit damage. DO NOT
reverse battery connections.
Reverse connections may result in sparks
which can cause serious injury. ALWAYS
connect positive (+) lead of charger to
positive (+) terminal, and negative (-) lead to
negative (-) terminal.
ALWAYS disconnect negative (-) cable
FIRST and positive (+) cable SECOND.
ALWAYS connect positive (+) cable FIRST,
and negative (-) cable SECOND.
Explosive gases from battery can cause
death or serious injury. Poisonous battery
fluid contains sulfuric acid and its contact
with skin, eyes or clothing can cause severe
chemical burns.
No flames, No sparks, No smoking near
battery.
ALWAYS wear safety glasses and protective
gear near battery. Use insulated tools.
ALWAYS keep batteries out of reach of
children.
Battery posts, terminals and related
accessories contain lead and lead
compounds, chemicals known to cause
cancer and reproductive harm. Wash hands
after handling.

Service
The use of non-genuine replacement parts
or accessories could adversely affect
machine operation and safety.
Do not change engine governor setting or
overspeed the engine.
Maintain or replace safety and instruction
labels as necessary.
Keep unit free of debris. Clean up oil or fuel
spills.
ALWAYS block wheels and know all jack
stands are strong and secure and will hold
weight of unit during maintenance.
Release any pneumatic or hydraulic
pressure from components slowly.
NEVER attempt to make any adjustments to
unit while engine is running (except where
specifically recommended). Stop engine,
remove key and spark plug wire and wait for
all moving parts to stop before servicing or
cleaning.
Lower cutting deck unless a positive
mechanical lock is used.
Allow engine to cool before servicing.
Moving parts can cut or amputate fingers or
a hand. On multiblade mowers, rotation of
one blade will cause all blades to rotate.
NEVER weld or straighten mower blades.
NEVER make adjustments or repairs with
the engine running.
Mower blades are sharp. Wrap the blade or
wear gloves, and use extra caution when
servicing them.
ALWAYS keep body and hands away from
pin holes or nozzles which eject hydraulic
fluid under pressure.
Transporting Unit
Use extra care when loading or unloading
the machine into a trailer or truck.
Secure unit chassis to transport vehicle.
NEVER secure from rods or linkages that
could be damaged.
DO NOT transport machine while engine is
running.
ALWAYS turn off power to attachment and
shut off fuel when transporting unit.
Storage
NEVER store unit with fuel in fuel tank inside
a building where any ignition sources are
present.
Keep machine free of grass, leaves or other
debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage
and remove any fuel-soaked debris. Allow
machine to cool before storing.
For extended storage, disconnect battery.

Button
Adjusts clock and resets service icon.
Service Icon
Flashes signals when 25, 50, 75,
or 100 hours of running time are
reached.
Fuel Indicator
Illuminates to indicate that fuel
level has reached minimum, then
flashes when need for fuel is
urgent.
Battery Icon
Lights momentarily during start-
up and will remain on if battery is
supplying insufficient charge.

EMERGENCY STOPPING
1. Remove foot from pedals immediately.
2. Set parking brake.
3. Turn ignition key to off position and
remove key from ignition.
BEFORE OPERATING UNIT
1. Check fuel level and add fuel if needed.
IMPORTANT: For fuel specifications, refer to
engine manual. DO NOT use E85 blended
fuels; the engine is not E15 / E20 / E85
compatible. The maximum recommended
ethanol content is 10%.
2. Check engine oil level and add oil if
needed. Refer to engine manual.
START THE ENGINE
1. Set parking brake.
IMPORTANT: The engine will not start with
brake in off position. The parking brake icon
on the central dashboard display will flash if
an attempt is made to start the engine with
brake in off position.
2. If engine is cold, pull choke control knob
up to on position. If engine is warm or hot,
turn choke off. Set throttle control lever 25
to 50% of the way to fast speed.
3. Insert ignition key and turn to start
position. Release key when engine starts.
Upon successful start, ignition key will
move to running position and central
dashboard display will light. See Figure 6.
4. If choke is on, wait a few seconds after
engine starts and then push choke control
knob down to off position or move the
lever off the choke position.
DRIVE UNIT
See Figure 10.
1. Ensuring that your feet are off of both
forward and reverse pedals, move
parking brake lever to off position.
2. Gently depress forward pedal to move
forward or depress reverse pedal to move
in reverse.
3. To increase speed, depress pedal further.
IMPORTANT: The forward and reverse
pedals control the hydrostatic transmission
and not the engine. Depressing the pedals
further increases the travel speed, but not the
engine speed.
4. To stop moving, gradually release pedal.
For an emergency stop, remove foot
rapidly.
5. To park unit, release pedal to stop moving
and pull parking brake lever to on
position. Both pedals will lock. Parking
brake icon on central dashboard display
will light.
NOTICE: DO NOT pull the parking brake
lever to the on position while the unit is in
motion or when either of the pedals are
depressed.

signals can only be reset by an authorised

MAINTENANCE PREPARATION
Before starting any of the following
maintenance procedures:
1. Park unit a flat, level surface.
2. Set parking brake.
3. Stop engine and wait for moving parts to
stop and for hot parts to cool.
4. Disconnect spark plug wires from engine.
NOTICE: Reconnect spark plug wires after
maintenance.
CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL
NOTICE: Engine oil level must be maintained
at correct level or engine damage may occur.
Refer to engine manual.
CHECK FUNCTION OF
DASHBOARD
The dashboard display should light when the
engine is started. If it fails to light, check if
fuse 6 has blown. See Fuse Configuration on
page 19. If this is not the case, contact your
dealer.
CHECK TYRE PRESSURE AND
CONDITION
See Specifications on page 24 for
recommended tyre pressure.
If the tyre, wheel and hub assembly is
damaged, contact your dealer for a
replacement.
Remove and Install Front Wheel
Models with 2WD
1. Set parking brake.
2. Place chocks under rear wheels.
3. Remove plastic hub cap.
4. Before jacking, loosen wheel nut using a
19 mm socket-spanner.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT remove the wheel at
this stage.
5. Place a jack under front axle at jacking
point. See Figure 12.
6. Jack unit up until both front wheels are
well clear of the ground.
7. Remove wheel nut and washer, discard
nut and set washer aside.
8. Pull old wheel off without disturbing jack.
9. Place new wheel on unit.
10. Install washer and a new M12 Nyloc nut.
11. Lower unit to the ground.
12. Tighten nut to a torque setting of 5.3 kg-m
(38 lb-ft).
13. Ensure that wheel turns freely.
Remove and Install Rear Wheel
1. Set parking brake.
2. Place chocks under front wheels.
3. Loosen four wheel nuts.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT remove the wheel at
this stage.
WARNING: AVOID INJURY.
Explosive separation of tire
and rim parts is possible.
• DO NOT inflate tyres above
the recommended pressure.
• DO NOT inflate tyres with a
compressor; use a hand
pump.
• DO NOT stand in front of
tyre assembly when
inflating. Use a clip-on
chuck and extension hose
long enough to allow you to
stand to one side.
• DO NOT mount a tyre
without proper equipment
and experience.

4. Place a jack under rear axle at jacking
point on same side as wheel to be
removed. See Figure 13.

10. Lower unit to the ground.

CHECK STEERING HANDLING
If steering handles poorly, contact your
dealer.
CHECK PARKING BRAKE
When parking brake is set, parking brake icon
should light on the central dashboard display
and the forward and reverse pedals should
be locked.
BATTERY MAINTENANCE
Keep battery clean. If battery requires
charging, the maximum charge rate is
1.5 amps.
To remove battery, disconnect negative cable
and then positive cable.
FACTORS AFFECTING BATTERY
LIFE
There are a handful of factors which can
significantly effect battery life; 1) storing the
battery for long periods when not fully
charged, 2) operating or storing at high or low
temperatures.
Low Charge/Sulphation
Small sulphate crystals occur naturally as
part of the discharging process and, if the
battery is charged correctly, are not harmful.
However, allowing a lead-acid battery to
remain at low levels of discharge promotes
the formation of larger lead sulphate crystals
which are less likely to dissolve on recharging
(hard sulphation). This damage can occur in
a period of days if a tractor battery is below
11.5v.
Extreme temperatures
Lead-acid batteries are sensitive to
temperature, and are generally at their
optimum at 25°C. Cold batteries will hold their
charge for longer, because the chemical
reaction slows down as temperature drops.
However, this reduces the battery’s capacity
to discharge which is why in freezing
conditions a battery may appear to be
“sluggish” when cranking an engine.
To compound this, if a battery is in a poor
condition of charge the electrolyte will have a
lower concentration of sulphuric acid to water
which in extreme circumstances could lead to
the electrolyte freezing and damaging the
cells.
In contrast, all lead-acid batteries will have a
shorter life when operated or stored at higher
temperatures. As a guide, for every 8°C
increase in ambient temperature the battery
life is halved.
LOOKING AFTER YOUR
TRACTOR BATTERY
Ariens garden tractors are fitted with a 12v
30Ah lead-acid battery. If stored correctly, the
charge in the battery will remain at healthy
levels for years. However, if not correctly
maintained owners may experience problems
with battery performance.

Battery posts, terminals and
related accessories contain
lead and lead compounds,
chemicals known to the State
of California to cause cancer
and reproductive harm. Wash
hands after handling.

Long-term storage
For winter or long-term storage, it is important
the battery is fully charged and disconnected.
If the tractor is stored with a partially charged
battery it is likely damage to the battery
electrodes will occur (sulphation), and when
the tractor is being prepared for use the
battery will not hold/take a charge. Should
damage occur, the only reliable solution is to
replace with a new battery.
To disconnect the battery, disconnect the
negative cable first before disconnecting the
positive cable (red). At this point, if required,
a battery charger can be connected to ‘top-
up’ the battery.
Pro-longed periods without use/short
periods of use
Similar to the issues posed during long-term
storage, the tractor owner should be mindful
of prolonged periods without running the
tractor or repeated short periods of use.
Starting the tractor engine draws a significant
amount of current from the battery and the
engine charge circuitry then re-charges the
battery to its full capacity over a period of
many minutes.
If the tractor is being used for frequent and
short periods, it is likely the charge in the
battery will diminish. If then stored for any
length of time, sulphation may occur causing
damage to the battery cells leading to early
battery failure.
One situation where this is specifically a
problem is during prolonged dry spells, during
which grass growth is slow and less dense
and garden tractor usage for lawn-mowing is
vastly reduced. The short periods of use and
elevated temperatures all contribute to higher
than normal battery failures.
To reduce the amount of early battery
failures, recognise the usage pattern of the
garden tractor and consider topping up the
charge on a periodic basis.
Annual servicing
The health of the battery and charging needs
to be checked during the normal service
intervals. With the engine switched off the
battery should hold a charge of no less than
12.5v.
To check the charging circuit, start the engine
and measure the voltage across the battery
terminals. A healthy charging circuit should
be at approximately 14.5V or above. If the
charge is significantly lower, it could be an
indication of either a damaged battery or a
poor charging circuit. It is recommended the
connections to and from the battery are
checked for corrosion/integrity and the
battery changed for a known good unit. If the
problem persists it is possible the alternator
or rectifier on the engine is faulty.
BATTERY CARE – DO’S AND
