1 Intr ducti n
RCFD-230C is a 230 V AC electronic fan-coil thermostat for room temperat re control. It is s itable for
every kind of b ilding where red ced energy cons mption and high comfort need to be met. The ability to
switch between control modes depending on occ pancy, makes it partic larly s itable for p blic spaces,
s ch as hotel rooms, offices, schools, hospitals, etc. The nit can operate in standalone mode or thro gh
Modb s, which makes it possible to integrate with other systems s ch as SCADA or DDC. The mod lar
design makes it easy to install and the fl sh mo nting gives the nit a discreet appearance.
This man al provides descriptions of the thermostat f nctions, as well as hardware-related information
concerning thermostat connections, wiring, mo nting, maintenance and service, and so on.

2.1 C ntr l m des
The thermostat can be sed both for 4-pipe systems and 2-pipe systems. The control mode f nction enables
the thermostat to s pport control of vario s room HVAC systems, that is, different combinations of heating
and cooling devices that are part of a room. The thermostat can be set to one of the following two control
modes:
✓Fo r pipe system: Heating and Cooling
✓Two pipe system: Heating or Cooling (change-over)
2.1.1 F ur pipe system
In the fo r pipe system, the thermostat a tomatically switches between being a heat thermostat and a cool
thermostat. This control mode is s itable for room HVAC systems that se a fan coil as heating or cooling
device.
The thermostat works as a heat thermostat when the room temperat re is lower than a specified
temperat re, and as a cool thermostat when the room temperat re is higher than a specified temperat re.
2.1.2 Tw pipe system
This control mode is s itable for room HVAC systems that se a 2-pipe fan coil as heating and cooling
device (see Figure 2-1). A change-over f nction makes it possible to se the thermostat in a 2-pipe change-
over system, where warm or cold media flow in the same pipes and one valve is sed to reg late both heating
and cooling distrib tion. The thermostat is either in heating or cooling mode, and switches between the
modes according to the change-over f nction settings. The change-over f nction is f rther described in
chapter 2.3.

2.2 C ntr l principles
2.2.1 Heating and c ling functi ns
The thermostat ses a calc lated setpoint for heating and cooling (SPcalc). Since the ser can increase or
decrease the basic setpoint, the calc lated setpoint takes into consideration both the hysteresis and the ser
defined setpoint adj stment (SPadj).
✓Heating: SPcalc = SPbasic + SPadj - (Hysteresis / 2)
✓Cooling: SPcalc = SPbasic + SPadj + (Hysteresis / 2)

be different when in Occupied state c mpared t Standby state.
The heating f nction is activated when the room temperat re is lower than SPcalc min s a defined
temperat re span (deltaT). The heating o tp t closes when the calc lated setpoint is reached.

2.3 Change- ver
2.3.1 General
Change-over is a control f nction that enables the thermostat to provide either a heating or a cooling signal
on the same o tp t. This is achieved by shifting the change-over state from heating to cooling, and vice versa.
The change-over f nction makes it possible to se the thermostat in a 2-pipe change-over HVAC system,
where warm or cold media flow in the same pipes and one valve is sed to reg late both heating and cooling
distrib tion.
The change-over state can be set to either heating or cooling.
The change-over state is managed with one of the available change-over modes:
✓Man ally heat
The thermostat works solely as a heating nit
✓Man ally cool
The thermostat works solely as an cooling nit
✓Change-over, man al/a tomatic
The thermostat works as a heating or cooling nit depending on the change-over state. The change-
over may be set man ally, by comm nication or by the temperat re sensor on AI emp or switch on
DI.
The heat or cool symbol is shown in the display depending on the c rrent change-over state (heating or
cooling).

2.3.2 Change- ver detecti n
Change-over detection is performed either by sing a PT1000 sensor that is connected to an analog inp t, or
by sing a potential-free contact that is connected to a digital inp t. The PT1000 sensor is mo nted so that it
senses the pipe media temperat re.
When sing a PT1000 sensor for change-over detection, the shift in change-over state is triggered based on
the difference between the pipe media temperat re and the room temperat re. The thermostat shifts the
change-over state to heating when the pipe media temperat re is 3 °C (defa lt setting) higher than the room
temperat re. The thermostat shifts the change-over state to cooling when the pipe media temperat re is 3 °C
(defa lt setting) lower than the room temperat re. The valve has to be at least 20 % open to r n calc lation
to ens re that the media temperat re is correct.
When sing a potential-free contact for change-over detection, the thermostat shifts the change-over state to
cooling when the contact is closed. The thermostat shifts the change-over state to heating when the contact is
open. This ass mes that the digital inp t is set to Normally opened.
2.3.3 Change- ver via display
If Parameter 9 or Holding Register 12 is set to 0, then the change-over f nction is set by actions from the
display. Switching from Heating to Cooling mode, and vice versa, is then done by pressing the change-over
b tton. This is the only config ration where the change-over b tton will be showed in the display.

2.4 Fan c ntr l
2.4.1 Three speed fan
The nit handles 3-speed fans with relays. The fans can be config red in one of the following 4 ways:
1. The fan does not follow neither heating or cooling and can only be set man ally
2. The fan only follows the heating demand
3. The fan only follows the cooling demand
4. The fan follows both heating and cooling demand
The fan speed is controlled by the room temperat re deviation from the calc lated setpoint (SPcalc) (see
2.2.1). Fan 1 starts when the temperat re deviation is 1 °C (defa lt) from the calc lated setpoint. Fan 2
starts when the deviation is 2 °C (defa lt) from the calc lated setpoint and Fan 3 starts when the
temperat re deviation is 3 °C (defa lt) from the calc lated setpoint. The fan speed then decrease when the
deviation decreases.
For the end ser, the man al control of the fans is done with the fan b tton in the lower right corner.
The ser steps thro gh the following steps by pressing the fan b tton:
A to -> Man al speed 0 (fan stop) -> Man al speed 1 -> Man al speed 2 -> Man al speed 3 -> A to
The fan symbol in the pper part of the display will spin if speed is set (a tomatically or man ally) and will
be at standstill otherwise. Symbol “Man” will lit p as long as the Man al speed 0 – Man al speed 3 is
selected and be t rned of otherwise. A to will be lit p when A to speed is selected and be t rned off
otherwise. The bars for fan speed will correspond to the c rrent speed set, either Man ally or A tomatically.

Via Modb s it is possible to force the fan to r n with at least one fan speed. This is valid in all states except
the Off state where the fan will be t rned off.
2.4.2 M uld pr tecti n
In order to minimise the risk of mo ld growth in the fan-coil nit it is possible to activate the mo ld
protection. When activated, the fan will r n with at least one fan speed in all states to circ late air in the
room and minimise the risk of mo ld growth in the fan-coil nit.

2.5 Actuat r c ntr l
2.5.1 Heating/C ling valves
The nit has two digital o tp ts for heating and cooling thermal act ator control, i.e. terminals Heat and
Cool. For thermal act ators Heat is always config red for heating valve and Cool for cooling valve. If heating
is needed, Heat is On and Cool is Off, and if cooling is needed Cool is On and Heat is Off.

2.6 C ntr ller states
Controller state is a f nction that makes it possible for the room HVAC system to operate with priority on
comfort or energy saving.
The following controller states are available for se and the thermostat always operates in one of them:
✓Off
✓Standby
✓Occ pied

2.6.1 Off
The thermostat neither heats nor cools and the fan is at a standstill, nless mo ld protection has been
selected in which case the fan is still r nning.
All segments in the display are dimmed down, except the On/Off b tton (see chapter3.3). The thermostat
cannot exit the Off state d e to presence. Only a press on the On/Off b tton or a remote control command
can trigger the exit.
2.6.2 Standby
The thermostat works aro nd the calc lated Standby setpoint (see chapter see 2.2.1)
This is the controller state that the thermostat will enter into when it has no inp t from the I/O, the display
or the comm nication. This is also the normal state at power p.
At Standby, the nocc pied segment is shown in the display.
2.6.3 Occupied
A presence detector can be connected to DI1 in order to switch between the Occupied and Standby state.
Switching between Occupied and Off can also be performed via the occ pancy b tton, or via
comm nication. The thermostat works aro nd the calc lated Occupied setpoint (see 2.2.1).
At Occupied state the occ pied segment is shown in the display.
2.6.4 Fl w chart c ntr ller states
The basic state of the thermostat is Standby state. If there is no external infl ence it will ret rn to this state.
See Figure 2-7 to get a better nderstanding of how the thermostat moves between the different states.

2.6.5 Rem te c ntr l
Remote control is a way to make the controller enter a specific controller state via Modb s comm nication.
It may enter the states Off,Standby and Occupied. However, the remote control does not lock the state so an
external event from e.g. a presence sensor may move it o t of the state set remotely.
Example: The controller is c rrently in Occupied state. Via remote control the nit is set to Standby state.
The controller then enters Standby state and stays there. The connected presence detector indicates
presence, which makes the controller enter Occupied state again. It stays in that state ntil either there is no
more presence or a new state is set remotely.

2.7 Presence detecti n
2.7.1 Functi n
Presence detection is a control f nction that makes it possible for the controller to a tomatically switch
between controller states based on if someone is present in the room. A presence detector or hotel key card
sensor is connected to DI in order to choose between the controller states Occupied and Standby.
The controller checks for presence contin o sly when the controller has been set in the Operating mode
(DI) Presence detection.

2.7.2 On/Off delay
When the DI1 is config red as presence sensor, there is an On/Off delay that may be config red. The On
delay makes the presence detection wait for the config red amo nt of time before presence is determined.
The Off delay makes the presence detection stick for the config red amo nt of time before ret rning to no
presence.
The defa lt val es are 0 which means that the presence is on or off instantly.

3.1 The display
3.2 Display m des
3.2.1 General
The display has three different modes that it operates in when in Standby and Occupied state:
✓Idle mode
✓Active mode
✓Setpoint mode
3.2.2 Idle m de
When the display has been inactive d ring a defined time span, it goes into Idle mode. In this mode all
b ttons and segments, except the two arrows, are dimmed down in the display. The time it takes before the
display is p t into Idle mode is set with the parameter Inactive delay. If this delay is set to 0 the display never
dims down.
3.2.3 Active m de
The Active mode is the mode the ser sees when activating the display, witho t entering any val e. In this
mode it is possible to show one of the following two val es in the display:
✓The calc lated setpoint (SPcalc)
✓The c rrent room temperat re, meas red either by the internal or the external sensor
The symbol for indoor temperat re is always lit in this mode, as there will always be meas rements of the
indoor temperat re.
3.2.4 Setp int m de
The Setpoint mode is what the ser sees when adj sting the room temperat re via the display. This mode is
activated if the ser presses either the Arrow up or Arrow down arrow when in Active mode . The display can
be set to show two different val es in this mode:

speeds can be shown.
Occupancy
The man and the house are two separate segments that can be controlled
individually.
No presence
Used in combination with the segment Occupancy.
Shows that the controller is in cool mode
Shows that the controller is in heat mode
