The RESOL WMZ-M1 is an universal calorimeter for thermal solar systems and
conventional heating systems. This calorimeter especially takes into consideration that
the density and the specific heat capacity of the heating medium are dependent on the
temperatureas wellas onthe mixingratio ofwater/glycol. Dueto theseparameters, the
measurement of feed flow and return flow temperature by 2 precision-platin sensors
and the evaluation of impulses of the flowmeter, the calorimeter RESOL WMZ-M1
calculates the heat amount.
A power failure protection guarantees that the adjusted control parameter and the
value of the calculated heat amount are maintained in case of a power failure. By means
of pushbuttons, different channels can be chosen and user planes can be changed. The
temperatureof the selectedmeasuring point, the heat gained, the actual powerandthe
volumetric flow of the system are indicated on the LC-display. A control lamp is also
installed for indication of sensor defects.A second user plane is used for indication of
system adjustments and control values, which can be analoguely adapted in case of
system changes.
Thepower supply iseffectedby thebusconduction according tothe regulator used,so
that an additional plug-in power supply is not necessary.Otherwise, the power supply
of the WMZ-M1 will be effected by the delivered plug-in-power supply. 2 parallelly
linked bus connections enable the connection of additional RESOL-modules.
The transfer of all indicated values to the respective RESOL regulator, computer or
data logger for additional processing or evaluation is effected by a data output.
Example for one system with one collector (1) and
one store (5)
The RESOL WMZ-M1 (2) calculates the temperature
difference of feed flow- (6) and return flow temperature
(7).With regard to the mixing ratio of water/glycol and the
evaluation of the impulses of the flowmeter (8),theWMZ-
M1 calculates the heat amount taken up by the store. The
pump (9) should always be used in combination with a non
return valve (10).The power supply of the WMZ-M1 is
effected by the regulator (VBUS) (3) or by the delivered
plug-in power supply (4).

1.1 Flowmeter
For determining the volume flow in the heating circuit a
Flowmeter RESOL V40 is used.
For the installation you have to consider the flow direction
(right direction is mentioned on the flow meter). To reduce
the flow an inlet and outflow zone of the length of at least
30 cm needs to be installed.
Note:
The variantsV40 0,6 to 2,5 allow a horizontal and vertical
installation.The variantsV40 3,5 to 6,5 may only be installed
horizontally.
To avoid pressure surge of cavitation in hydraulic
constructions it is advised to fill up the system in a cold
state and the use of de-aerator. In a long view, pressure
surge and turbulent flow will lead to the demolition of the
sensitive system’s measuring instruments.

2. Sensor types
As the measuring has to be as exactly as possible to collect
the heat amount, one uses in combination with the
WMZ-M1 exclusively precision platinum sensors (Pt1000
model). The arrangement of the sensors is of great
importance to the total efficiency of the regulator. The
collector temperature should be measured in the upper part
of the collector. In stores with integral heat exchanger, the
sensor must be directly mounted in the upper part of the
heat exchanger. When using external heat exchangers, the
sensor must be fixed at the bottom of the store. For indi-
vidual operation systems, our product range contains 3 dif-
ferent types of sensors (sensors for installation in existing
immersion sleeves, flatscrew sensors or cylindrical clip-on
sensors). The sensor types FK and FR have the same
electrical features and are available in the same models,
They only differ in the connecting cable:
Immersion sensors: in different lengths (immersion
depth) available
FRP45: 45 mm immersion depth, immersion sleeves of
chromium-plated brass, it is included in the full kit.
FK...150: 150 mm immersion depth, immersion sleeve of
chromium-plated copper
Important:The sensors must be completely pushed into
the sleeve and the nut must be slightly tightenend.
Cylindrical clip-on sensors:for any pipe diameter;cpl. with
fastening collar; FK...21 or FR...21
Ensure good thermal contact of the sensor with the pipe
work by cleaning the contact area and by applying heat
conduction paste between sensor and pipe. In order to
protect the sensor cable against outside temperature
influences, it is recommended to insulate the pipe.
Flatscrew sensors: for installation on flat surfaces
FK...9 or FR...9
Ensure good thermal contact. Use conduction paste and
insulatethe sensors againstoutside temperature influences.
FK: 1,5 m weather- and temperature resistant silicone cable
for temperatures between -50 °C ... +180 °C, mostly used for
collectors.
FR: 2,5 m PVC cable for tempertures between
-5 °C ... +80 °C, mostly used for stores.
Make sure that all electrical works are carried out according
to the relevant local and IEE-regulations.The sensor cables
carry low voltages and they must not run together in a
cable conduit with cables carrying higher voltages than 50
Volts. When using longer cables or cable conduits, please
use screened cables. The sensor cables can be lengthened
up to 100 m, but the cross section must be 1,5 mm² (or
0,75 mm² up to a cable length of 50m); screened cables
should be used preferably. The sensors must not be in direct
contact with water, please always use immersion sleeves.

4. Function For the calculation of the quantity of transferred heat the
calorimeter RESOL WMZ-M1 takes into account the
dependence of temperature and mixing proportion (used
of limited values) of the specific heat capacity c and the
specific gravity r.With these parameters, the measurement
of the feed and return flow temperatures by two precision-
temperature sensors and the treatment of the pulses of a
volumetric flowmeter,theWMZ-M1 calculates the
Refractometer
Take a drop of the heating medium out of the heating circuit
and spread it on the Refractometer. The The glycol’s
concentration can be taken from the scale.
3. Determination of the proportion of the mixture water - glycol
As the heat capacity of the heat transfer liquid depends on
the concentration of glycol, at first the proportion of the
mixture glycol - water has to be determined.
• If the volumes of water and glycol in the system are known,
the value in % can be calculated:
Vol % = (VG :(VW +VG)) x 100
VG:volume of the glycol
VW: volume of the water
Example: if in the solar circuit 15 liters of water and 20 liters
of glycol are present, then follows:
Vol % = (20 : (15 + 20)) x 100) = 57
Determination of the concentration at unknown
volume:
RESOL DHA125 or Prüfset:
To analyse the system you have to withdraw a little liquid
from the heating circuit and fill it into the measuring glass.
With the measuring spindle the concetration of the liquid
can be determined which can be converted into the mixing
ratio with the aid of the table.
(When using ready mixed fluids pay attention to manufacturers instructions)

definition of the propylene-ethylene-glycol-proportion in the
heating medium of the solar heating system.

7.Tips for fault location Please check the following points if the calorimeter RESOL
WMZ-M1 does not work faultlessly:
1. Power supply
The power supply is guaranteed if an indication appears in
the display.
2.Temperature sensors
Be aware of sensible indications for the feed and return
flow temperatures. Faults of the sensors are indicated by
lighting of the yellow error control lamp. On the display
the error is indicated by the following error codes:
E - 0 = there is no error
E - 1 = error in the feed flow temperature sensor
E - 2 = error in the return flow temperature sensor
E - 3 = error in the temperature sensors 1 and 2
E - 4 = negative DT and volumetric flow > 0 (e.g. feed and
return flow temperature sensors changed).
After selection of the measuring point the kind of error is
indicated on the display as follows:
Broken sensor cable:
888
Short-circuit in the sensor cable:
-88.
In case of a malfunction of a sensor the resistance values
can be checked. Sensors that are not connected have
resistance values as indicated in the table, they can be
checked with a resistance meter.
