Abbreviations
Terms Descriptions
PE The abbreviation for Protective Earth. PE has the same meaning as the symbol.
The symbol for Protective Earth.
Earth, Ground This document uses the term “earth,” which is the same as the U.S. term “ground”.
DC 24V A value that is displayed with the AC or DC before the value represents a nominal voltage with standard tolerances (usually ±15%) included. For example: DC 12V describes a 12V
battery disregarding whether it is full (13.7V) or flat (10V).
24V DC A value with the unit (V DC) at the end is a momentary value without any additional
tolerances included.
nom Indicates a nominal value.
typ Indicates a typical value.
— (alone in table cell) A dash alone in a table cell indicates that there is no information to be included in that cell.
1+1 Redundancy
Use of two identical power supplies in parallel to provide continued operation following
most failures in a single power supply. Isolate the two power supply outputs from each
other by using diodes or other switching arrangements. For example, two 10 A power
supplies are needed to achieve a 10 A redundant system.
N+1 Redundancy
Use of three or more identical power supplies in parallel, which are allowed to be
connected in parallel for higher output currents, to provide continued operation following
most failures in a single power supply. Isolate all power supply outputs from each other by
using diodes or other switching arrangements. For example, to achieve a 40 A redundant
system, five 10 A power supplies are needed in an N+1 redundant system. Confirm that the
power supplies are allowed to be connected in parallel to increase the output power.

Product Overview The 1606-XLSREDS40HE is a redundancy module,
which can be used to build redundant systems. The
module has one input and one output, and can carry
nominal currents up to 40 A. The output is equipped
with a plug-connector, which allows for replacement
of the power supply or redundancy module while the
system is running (hot swapping).
The novelty of this redundancy module is that it uses
mosfets instead of diodes to decouple the output,
which helps reduce the heat generation and the
voltage drop between input and output. The
redundancy module does not require an additional
auxiliary voltage.
Due to the low-power losses, the unit is slender and
only requires 46 mm (1.81 in.) width on the DIN rail.
Large connection terminals provide a safe and fast
installation. The large international approval
package makes this module suitable for nearly every application.

Lifetime Expectancy and
Mean Time Between Failure
Terminals and Wiring The terminals are IP20 fingersafe constructed and suitable for field wiring.
To connect the chassis to the ground, use a ring-type terminal (ring cable lug)
that is suitable for an M4 screw. Connect this terminal to the chassis ground
terminal on top of the unit.
Wiring rules:
• The external circuitry of all terminals must meet the safety requirements
stipulated by IEC/EN/UL 60950-1: SELV.
• Use appropriate copper cables that are designed for minimum operating
temperatures of:
- 60 °C (140 °F) for ambient up to 45 °C (113 °F)
- 75 °C (167 °F) for ambient up to 60 °C (140 °F)
- 90 °C (194 °F) for ambient up to 70 °C (167 °F) minimum
• Do not connect or disconnect wires from the terminals below -25 °C
(-13 °F)
• Follow national installation codes and installation regulations.
• Verify that all strands of a stranded wire enter the terminal connection.
• Unused terminal compartments should be securely tightened.
• Ferrules are allowed.

Lifetime expectancy(1)
(1) The Lifetime expectancy values that are shown in the table indicate the minimum operating hours (service life) and are determined
by the lifetime expectancy of the built-in electrolytic capacitors. Lifetime expectancy is specified in operational hours and is
calculated according to the manufacturer specification of the capacitor. The manufacturer of the electrolytic capacitors only states
a maximum life of up to 15 years (131,400 h). Any number that exceeds this value is a calculated theoretical lifetime, which can be
used to compare devices.

statistical representation of the likelihood of a unit to fail and does not necessarily represent the life of a product. The MTBF value

one unit fails every 100 hours if 10,000 units are installed in the field. However, it cannot be determined if the failed unit has been

Instructions to Insert and Remove the Pluggable Outlet Terminal
To avoid an accidental disconnection of the output, the plug connector is
equipped with a locking system.
To remove the latch mechanism, perform the following steps.
1. To unlock the red sliders, push the tabs down (A in Figure 5).
2. While pushing down, slide the tabs forward (B in Figure 5).
3. Pull out the connector to unplug it (C in Figure 5).
4. To inset the plug connector, reverse the above steps.

Replace Units While the
System Is Running
To replace the power supply or redundancy module while the system is
running, perform the following steps.
1. Switch off the circuit breaker (3a or 3b in Figure 6).
2. Remove the plug (4a or 4b), which helps prevent the cables from shorting.
3. Change the power supply (1a or 1b), or the redundancy module (2a or 2b),
or both (1a/2a or 1b/2b).
4. Reinstall the plug (4a or 4b).
5. Switch on the circuit breaker (3a or 3b).

Safety Features
Dielectric Strength The input and output voltages have the same reference, are floating and have
no ohmic connection to ground. Type and factory tests are conducted by the
manufacturer. Field tests can be conducted in the field using the appropriate
test equipment that applies the voltage with a slow ramp (2 s up and 2 s down).
Connect input/output terminals together before conducting the test. When
testing, set the cutoff current settings to the value in Figure 11.

Accessories The following accessories are available for the 1606-XLSREDS40HE
redundancy module.
Wall/Panel Mount Bracket (Cat. No. 1606-XLC)
This bracket mounts the device on a flat surface or panel without using a
DIN rail. The bracket can be mounted without detaching DIN rail brackets.
This bracket kit contains the two brackets that are needed for one device.

Side Mount Bracket (Cat. No. 1606-XLA-S44)
This bracket mounts the device sideways with or without using a DIN rail to
save installation depth.
The two aluminum brackets and the black plastic slider of the device must be
detached so that the steel bracket can be mounted.
For sideway DIN rail mounting, mount the removed aluminum brackets and
the black plastic slider on the side mount bracket.

Recommendations for
Redundancy
Recommendations for the configuration of redundant power systems:
• Use three-phase power supplies to gain functional safety if one phase
fails.
• When single-phase power supplies are used, connect them to different
phases or mains circuits if possible.
• Use separate input fuses for each power supply.
• Set the power supply in “Parallel-Use” mode if this feature is available.
• It is desirable to set the output voltages of all power supplies to the same
value.
Inductive and Capacitive
Loads
The unit is designed to supply any kind of loads, including unlimited
capacitive and inductive loads.
Sidewards Installation
Clearance
Normally, the following installation clearances are recommended:
•40mmontop
• 20 mm on the bottom
• 5 mm on the left and right sides when the device is loaded permanently
with more than 50% of the rated power.
Increase this clearance to 15 mm in case the adjacent device is a heat
source (for example, another power supply).
The clearance between the power supplies and the redundancy module can be
reduced to zero under the following conditions:
• 1+1 redundancy application with a maximum 40 A output current.
• The power supplies are from the 1606-XLS or 1606-XLE family series.
• The redundancy module is placed between the two power supplies or at
least on one side of the power supply.
• The output voltage is set to the same level on both power supplies.

Example: Redundancy for
Controls
In many cases, two power supplies are used, one for the demanding loads and
another for the controls and sensitive loads. With the 1606-XLSREDS40HE
redundancy module, the power supply for the demanding loads can be used as
a redundant source to supply the controls. This provides a cost-effective
solution to get redundant power for a PLC or controller system.
Example: 1+1 Redundancy Up To 40 A
1+1 Redundancy up to 40 A requires two 40 A power supplies and two
1606-XLSREDS40HE redundancy modules. Use separate mains systems for
each power supply whenever it is possible.

Example: N+1 Redundancy With 120 A
N+1 Redundancy up to 120 A requires four 40 A power supplies and four
1606-XLBRED20 redundancy modules. Use separate mains systems for each

Mounting Orientations Mounting orientations other than input terminals on the bottom and output
on the top require a reduction in continuous output power or a limitation in
the maximum allowed ambient temperature.
The amount of reduction influences the lifetime expectancy of the power
supply. Therefore, there are two different derating curves for continuous
operation:
•Curve A1: Recommended output current
•Curve A2: Maximum allowed output current (results in approximately
half the lifetime expectancy of A1)
The following curves indicate the allowed output currents for altitudes up to
2000 m (6562 ft).
