Improper use or handling can result in
damage and/or injur . The scale ma

equipment. The regulations, applicable
laws, occupational safet requirements
and environmental protection laws
valid in our countr must be observed.
In particular, the conditions described
under Item 17 of the KEMA EC t pe-
examination certificate, “Special Condi-
tions for Safe Use," must be observed.
It is important that all personnel using
the equipment understand this warning
and safet information, and have access
to the relevant documents at all times.
Furthermore, the warning and safet
information supplied with an electrical
equipment connected, such as peripheral
devices, must be observed as well.
The warnings and safet precautions
ma have to be supplemented b the
equipment operator. All operating
personnel must be informed of an
additions to these instructions.
Make sure the equipment is accessible
at all times.
The compact scales in the EC1XS-……-L
series are designed for mass determination
in zone 1, 2, 21 and 22 hazardous areas.
The scale consists of a weighing platform
and a displa and control unit (evaluation
unit). An external power suppl is required
for operation of the scale (option YPS05-ZD
for installation in the non-hazardous area,
or YPS05-XD for the hazardous area).
In addition to the basic weighing function,
the scale is equipped with programs
for toggling weight units and gross/net
weighing. Weight values can be transferred
through a Zener barrier (e.g., option
YDI05-Z) over an RS-232 port (built-in)
or an RS-422 port (optional) to a printer
or computer outside the hazardous area.
A foot switch can also be connected to
the scale.
The display and control unit (evaluation
unit) comes with a separate operating
manual.
Make sure all safety instructions are
observed.
Note:
Read the installation and operating
instructions carefull before connecting
and operating the EC1XS.-……-L.

General Provisions for Installing
Explosion-protected EC XS.-……-L
Models in Zone , 2, 2 and 22
Hazardous Areas
Model EC1XS.-……-L scales meet the
requirements of EC Directive 94/9/EC
for Group II, Categor 2G or 2D devices
and are labeled in accordance with
EC t pe-examination certificate
KEMA04ATEX1279 (see the scale
operating instructions).
Furthermore, EC1XS.-……-L models
meet the requirements of EC Directives
for electromagnetic compatibilit
and electrical safet (see “Declaration
of Conformit " in the scale operating
instructions).
– The area of use for EC1XS.-……-L mod-
els and accessories (power supplies,
interface converter) is defined in the
t pe-examination certificate. All
restrictions listed in the t pe-examina-
tion certificate must be observed.
Operation outside of these restrictions
is not permitted, and is considered use
of the EC1XS.-……-L for other than its
intended purpose. An installation
work that does not conform to the
instructions in this manual will result
in forfeiture of all claims under the
manufacturer's warrant .
– When the equipment is operated in a
hazardous area, the national laws and
regulations applicable at the place of
use must be observed (e.g., EN60079-14
(gases); EN50281-1-2 (dusts)). Ask our
supplier for information on the legal
regulations applicable in our countr .
– The EC1XS.-……-L is ma not be used
in the medical industr (as a medicinal
product).
– Whether the equipment can be used
in a given area containing potentiall
explosive agents must be checked on
a case-b -case basis.
– If the equipment housing is opened b
an one other than persons authorized
b Sartorius, this will negate its con-
formit with regulations governing use
in the stated hazardous areas and result
in forfeiture of all claims under the
manufacturer's warrant .
– Installation of the s stem must be
performed b a certified electrician who
is familiar with the assembl , start-up
and operation of both the s stem and
the relevant guidelines and regulations,
and has the required qualifications for
performing the installation. If ou need
assistance, contact our Sartorius dealer
or the Sartorius Service Center.
– Avoid generating static electricit .
The weighing platform is connected to
the displa and control unit via the
shield in the connecting cable, or via
an optional column.

– Connect all equipment and accessories
to the equipotential bonding conduc-
tor; see also “Documents for Hazardous
Areas." Each grounding terminal is
marked b a “ground" s mbol .
Disconnecting equipotential bonding
conductors is not permitted. Make sure
the connection cannot come loose.
The grounding conductor is connected
to a threaded bolt or terminal screw,
or a bore hole is provided. If a bore hole
is provided, use a stainless steel screw
and nut to connect the grounding
conductor. Use of a tooth lock washer
is recommended to prevent the screw
from coming loose. The wire used for
the grounding conductor should have
a cross-sectional diameter of at least
4 mm2and have a suitable ring lug
attached. If the weighing platform is
moved on rollers in a hazardous area,
the speed of movement must be
limited to <1 m/s or the scale must
be grounded.
– Responsibilit for ensuring correct and
effective grounding of the equipment
lies with the s stem operator.
– When using the model EC1XS.-……-L
scale in a hazardous area, make sure
there is no current or voltage in the
equipment before connecting or dis-
connecting current-carr ing cables to
or from the scale or s stem. Disconnect
the s stem from AC power before
connecting or disconnecting cables.
The specifications (see EC t pe-exami-
nation certificate) must be taken into
account when connecting accessor
equipment to the platform. See also
“Documents for Hazardous Areas."
– An sockets or ports on the displa
and control unit to which no cable is
connected must be protected within
hazardous areas b affixing a cap with
the required IP protection rating.
– Before the EC1XS.-……-L scale is
operated in a hazardous area, it must
be inspected either b a certified
electrician or under the guidance and
supervision of a certified electrician
to make sure that the s stem complies
with the applicable regulations. Deter-
mine whether the installation must be
registered with the technical inspection
authorities (such as the trade board)
in our countr . Regular inspections
must be performed on the s stem dur-
ing operation. The s stem should
be inspected at intervals scheduled
to allow for the prevention or earl
detection of defects that arise as
a result of normal wear and tear. The
longest permissible interval period is
3 ears. Other conditions and standards
that regulate the safet of installation
and operation of the equipment and are
applicable in our countr must be met
as well. When performing inspections,
generall acknowledged rules of engi-
neering relevant to these conditions
must be applied.
For the User
– Alwa s make sure the equipment is
disconnected from AC power before
performing an installation, cleaning,
maintenance or repair work on the
scale or weighing s stem.
– If ou see an indication that the
s stem cannot be operated safel
(for example, due to damage), turn
it off and lock it in a secure place
or otherwise prevent use of the equip-
ment for the time being.
– Chemicals (such as gases or dusts)
that can corrode and damage the inside
or outside of the device must be kept
awa from the equipment. Handle
the equipment and accessories in
accordance with the protection (IP)
rating (EN 60529).
– The casing on all connecting cables,
as well as the casing on wires inside the
equipment housing, is made of PVC.
The casing on the power cable is made
of rubber.
– Do not expose the scale to aggressive
chemical vapors or to extreme tempera-
tures, moisture, shocks, or vibration.
The allowable ambient temperature
range during operation is –10°C to
+40°C (14°F to +104°F). Make sure
the place of installation is adequatel
ventilated to prevent build-up of
excessive heat.
– If ou use cables purchased from
another manufacturer, check the pin
assignments in the cable against those
specified b Sartorius before connecting
the cable to Sartorius equipment, and
disconnect an wires that are assigned
differentl . The operator shall be solel
responsible for an damage or injuries
that occur when using cables not
supplied b Sartorius. Use onl genuine
Sartorius spare parts.

Installation Instructions
Unpacking the Equipment
§After unpacking the equipment,
please check it immediatel for an
visible damage. Please read the
enclosed operating instructions care-
full before putting the equipment
into operation.
$If damage is evident, refer to the
instructions under “Safet
Inspection" in the chapter entitled
“Care and Maintenance."
$It is a good idea to save the box
and all parts of the packaging until
ou have successfull installed
our equipment. Onl the original
packaging provides the best pro-
tection for shipment.
$Before packing our equipment,
unplug all connected cables to
prevent damage.

Requirements on the Place of
Installation
§Observe all safet instructions.
The EC1XS.-……-L is designed to
provide reliable results under normal
ambient conditions.
When choosing a location to set
up the EC1XS.-……-LX, observe the
following so that ou will be able to
work with added speed and accurac :
– Set up the EC1XS.-……-L on a stable,
even surface. The carr ing capacit of
the chosen working surface must be
sufficient for both the weighing plat-
form and an load placed on it.
– Avoid placing the equipment in close
proximit to a heater or otherwise
exposing it to heat or direct sunlight.
– protect the EC1XS.-……-L from direct
exposure to drafts that come from
open windows or doors.
– Avoid exposing the EC1XS.-……-L
to excessive vibration.
– Protect the EC1XS.-……-L from
aggressive chemical vapors.
– Do not expose the equipment
to excessive electromagnetic inter-
ference, as it can affect the value
displa ed.
– Turn off the power when the s stem
is not in use
– The allowable operating
temperature range is –10°C to +40°C
(14°F to 104°F)
§Level the weighing platform using
the leveling feet as described below:
§Check to ensure that all leveling feet
rest securel on the work surface.
> Each of the leveling feet must
support an equal load.
§Loosen the locknuts on the leveling
feet using a 19-mm open-end
wrench (spanner).
> Adjusting the leveling feet:
To raise the weighing platform,
extend the leveling feet
(turn clockwise).
To lower the weighing platform,
retract the leveling feet
(turn counterclockwise).
§After leveling the weighing platform,
tighten the lock nuts as follows:
Low-capacit platforms (1 load cell):
tighten the locknuts against the plat-
form frame. High-capacit platforms
(4 load cells): tighten the locknuts
against the platform feet.
§If the scale is in a hazardous area,
it must be grounded (i.e., an equi-
potential bonding conductor must
be connected; resistance: <1 ohm).
This connection should be made b
a trained technician (see “Warnings
and Safet Precautions").
!Sartorius power supplies are equipped
with fuses for protection from over-
heating. The fuse responds when the
temperature exceeds 40°C (104°F).
Make sure power supplies have ade-
quate cooling/ventilation. You can
use screws to affix the power suppl
to a metal plate if necessar . Prevent
build-up of excessive heat.

Conditions for Installation
Before putting the s stem into
operation for the first time, make
sure there is no hazard of explosion
present at the place of installation.
If there is an indication that the
equipment does not function
properl (e.g., displa remains blank,
or no displa backlighting) due to
damage during transport, disconnect
the equipment from power and notif
our nearest Sartorius Service Center;
see also: “Safet Inspection" in
the chapter entitled “Care and Main-
tenance."
Take all equipment specifications
into account (see “Documents for
Hazardous Areas"). The explosion-
protected scale must be installed and
operated in accordance with
acknowledged rules of engineering.
Read
the chapter entitled “Warnings and
Safet Precautions" carefull and
observe all instructions.
Shock Resistance
Even though the EC1XS.-……-L scales
feature highl rugged construction,
there are some limits. Avoid exposing
the s stem to falling objects, side
impact, or shocks.
IP Rating
The displa and control unit is
rated to IP65, and the stainless steel
weighing platform has IP68 protec-
tion. These ratings indicate the
following levels of protection:
First digit: rating 6 indicates that
the equipment is dust-tight; i.e.,
completel resistant to penetration
b solids. Second digit: rating 5 indi-
cates resistance to penetration
b water, including powerful jets of
water; rating 8 indicates resistance
to ingress of water during complete,
continuous submersion in water to
a depth of up to 10 meters (approx.
32 feet).
IP65 or IP68 protection is guaranteed
onl if:
– the seals on the junction box are
installed correctl in accordance
with industr standards, and
– the connecting cables, protective
caps and cable glands were installed
and connected b a qualified
technician.
Notes on Integration into
Conveyor Systems
An moving or rotating parts per-
manentl attached to the
EC1XS.-……-L scale must be
designed so that the cannot affect
the weighing results.
For example, rotating mechanisms
must be properl balanced.
The EC1XS.-……-L must be clear on
all sides during weighing so that an
dirt or parts that fall will not create
a connection between the weighing
platform and an permanentl
mounted preload components. Make
sure there are no cables or other
objects exerting force on the load
plate. Avoid generating static
electricit .
Conditioning the Weighing System
Moisture in the air can condense
on the surface of a cold weighing
instrument or other device whenever
it is moved to a substantiall warmer
place. Condition the equipment for
about 2 hours at room temperature,
leaving it unplugged from AC power.
Afterwards, if ou keep the equip-
ment connected to AC power,
the constant positive difference in
temperature between the inside of
the equipment and the outside will
practicall rule out the effects of
moisture condensation.

Installation
Power Supply
The scale is powered b one of the
following power supplies:
– YPS05-ZD (non-hazardous area)
or
– YPS05-XD (hazardous area)
Note:
Observe all warnings and safet
precautions. Unplug the power cord
from the wall socket (mains) before
performing an work on the equip-
ment. Installation work that affects
the IP65 or IP68 protection rating
must be performed with extreme
care. An installation work that does
not conform to the instructions in
this manual will result in forfeiture of
all claims under the manufacturer's
warrant .
DC Connection on the EC XS.-……-L
§To open the displa and control
unit housing, remove the hexagonal
nuts (7 mm) and remove the screws.
§Remove the protective cap from the
bore hole on the indicator.
Note:
Keep the seal and nut in a safe place.
§Guide the cable with the pre-installed
cable gland through the bore hole.
§Install cable gland on the housing in
accordance with industr standards.
§Tighten the cable gland nut on the
inside of the housing. Use a torque
wrench and tighten the cable gland
to 3 Nm.
!Check the torque at appropriate
intervals to avoid over-tightening.
§Plug in the male connector on
the pin terminal.
§Position the cover on the displa
and control unit.
Check the fit of the seal between
cover and housing before closing
the displa and control unit.
Replace an defective seals.
Use a torque wrench and tighten the
screws to 1.6 Nm.
§Replace the hexagonal nuts (7 mm).
Connecting the Built-in
RS-232 Interface
§Open the displa and control unit
housing.
§Remove the protective cap.
§Connect the cable to pins 1 through
6 in accordance with industr
standards (see Drawing No. 65710-
740-52-A4, Sheet 2).
§Install the cable gland in accordance
with industr standards.
§Position the cover on the displa and
control unit. Replace the hexagonal
nuts (7 mm).
Connecting the Optional
RS-422 Interface
§Open the displa and control unit
housing.
§Remove the protective cap.
§Install the RS-422 interface card as
shown in the illustration on the left.
§Connect the cable from the interface
card to the main PCB (see illustration).
§Install the cable gland in accordance
with industr standards.
§Connect the cable to pins 1 through
10 in accordance with industr
standards (see Drawing No. 65710-
740-52-A4, Sheet 4).
§Position the cover on the displa
and control unit.
Replace the hexagonal nuts (7 mm).
Connecting the Optional Foot Switch
§Open the displa and control unit
housing.
§Remove the protective cap.
§Cut the round male connector off
of the model YPE05-S foot switch.
§Remove the insulation from
a segment of the cable
§Connect the cable gland (part no.
YAS04CIS) in accordance with
industr standards. Make sure the
shield has contact to the cable gland.
§Connect the cable to the LV1
terminal strip on pins 5 and 6 in
accordance with industr standards.
Note:
Because the device is a simple switch,
transposing the wires will not affect
the function.

Care and Maintenance
Service
Regular servicing b a Sartorius technician will extend the service
life of our EC1XS.-……-L scale or weighing s stem and help
to ensure its continued weighing accurac . Sartorius can offer
ou service contracts, with our choice of regular maintenance
intervals ranging from 1 month to 2 ears.
Repairs
!Disconnect defective equipment from power immediatel .
Repair work must be performed b authorized Sartorius service
technicians using genuine Sartorius spare parts. An attempt
b untrained persons to perform repairs ma result in consider-
able hazards for the user.
!If a cable or cable gland is damaged or defective, replace the
cable as a complete unit with all its connectors.
Cleaning
!Alwa s handle the equipment in keeping with its IP rating.
Make sure that no liquid penetrates the equipment housing.
$Unplug the s stem from power before cleaning or performing
an maintenance or repair work. Remove dirt and deposits
from the EC1XS.-……-L regularl .
$Wipe the equipment with a damp cloth onl . Avoid generating
static electricit . Devices rated to IP65 can be rinsed down with
a jet of water that strikes the load plate from above.
!When using high-pressure cleaning equipment, aim the steam
jet onl at the load plate. Do not aim the jet under the scale or
at the displa and control unit.
> If the water that ou use to clean the equipment is too hot
or too cold, the difference in temperature between the water
and the equipment can cause condensation inside the equip-
ment housing. This condensation ma cause the equipment
to malfunction.
Cleaning Stainless Steel Surfaces
Clean all stainless steel parts regularl . Use a damp cloth
or sponge to clean stainless steel parts on the s stem.
You can use an commerciall available household cleaning
agent that is suitable for use on stainless steel. Clean stainless
steel surfaces onl b wiping them down. Then rinse the equip-
ment thoroughl , making sure to remove all residues. After-
wards, wipe down stainless steel parts again using a clean, damp
cloth or sponge and allow the equipment to dr . If desired, ou
can appl oil to the cleaned surfaces as additional protection.
!Do not use stainless steel cleaning agents that contain soda
l e (caustic), acetic acid, h drochloric acid, sulfuric acid or citric
acid. The use of scrubbing sponges made with steel wool is not
permitted. Solvents are permitted onl for cleaning stainless
steel parts.
Corrosive Environment
$Remove all traces of corrosive substances on a regular basis.
Safety Inspection
If there is an indication that safe operation of the
EC1XS.-……-L is no longer warranted; e.g.:
– if there is visible damage to the connecting cable,
– if the equipment no longer functions properl ,
– if the equipment has been stored for a relativel
long period under unfavorable conditions, or
– if the equipment has been subjected to rough handling during
shipment,
§make sure all warnings and safet precautions are observed, and
notif our nearest Sartorius Service Center or the International
Technical Support Unit based in Goettingen, German .
Maintenance and repair work ma be performed onl b service
technicians who are authorized b Sartorius, have access to
the required maintenance and repair manuals and have attended
the relevant service training courses.
Storage and Shipping Conditions
$The packaging used for shipping our Sartorius equipment
is optimall designed to prevent damage during transport.
It is a good idea to save the box and all parts of the packaging
for future storage or shipment of the equipment. Onl the
original packaging provides the best protection for shipment.
$Allowable storage temperature: – 20°C to + 75°C
(–4°F to +167°F)
$Allowable humidit during storage: max. 90%
$Please refer to the information under “Warnings and Safet
Precautions."
Instructions for Recycling the Packaging
If ou no longer need the packaging after suc-
cessful installation of the equipment, ou should
return it for rec cling. The packaging is made
from environmentall friendl materials and is a
valuable source of secondar raw material. Bat-
teries are hazardous waste and must be disposed
of separatel . Please deposit empt batteries in
the collection boxes set up in our area for this
purpose. On request, Sartorius can provide GRS boxes for col-
lecting used batteries (GRS stands for “Gemeinsames Rücknahme
S stem," a German organization for batter disposal*). Contact
our local waste disposal authorities if ou wish to scrap the
equipment. Remove batteries before scrapping the equipment.
Sartorius AG in Goettingen will take back equipment and pack-
aging for disposal in accordance with the applicable laws.*
* These services are offered onl within German .
If ou set up the equipment in a countr other than German ,
please contact our local waste disposal authorities for
information on similar services.

The month and ear of manufacture are encoded in the serial
number as follows:
