0.1 Warranty and Liability
Inprinciple, thesupplyof thedeviceis subjectto our”General
Conditionsof SaleandDelivery”.These havebeenprovided tothe
operatingcompanyon conclusionofthe contract,atthelatest.
Warranty:
-Schmidt tensionmetersare warrantedfor 12months.
Partssubject towear,electronic componentsandmeasuring
springsare notcovered by thewarranty.Nowarrantyor liability
willbe acceptedfor bodilyinjuryor propertydamageresulting
fromone orseveralof thefollowingcauses:
-Misuse orabuseof thedevice.
-Improper mounting,commissioning,operation andmaintenance
ofthe device(e.g.verification interval).
-Operation ofthedevice ifanysafeguards aredefectiveor ifany
safetyand protectionprecautionsarenot properlyinstalledor not
operative.
-Ignoring thenoticesin theOperatingInstructionsregarding
transport,storage,mounting,commissioning,operation,
maintenanceandsetup ofthedevice.
-Any unauthorizedstructuralalteration ofthedevice.
-Insufficient inspectionofdevice componentsthataresubject to

1.2 Responsibilities of the Operating Company

The device must not be operated in
explosion hazard areas and must not
come into contact with aggressive
substances.

1.5 Training of the Personnel
Onlytrained andinstructedpersonnel ispermitted toworkwith
thedevice. Theresponsibilitiesof thepersonnelmust beclearly
definedfor mounting,commissioning,operation,setup, mainten-

If the material to be measured differs significantly from the SCHMIDT calibration material
in diameter, rigidity, shape, etc., we recommend calibration using customer material.
For this purpose, a material sample of about 5 m should be supplied.

These Operating Instructions refer to the ZEF / ZED Models of the ZE Series.
The individual models of the ZE Series are also available with the following

Measurement
Have you read and understood the
Operating Instructions, in particular
Chapter 1 "Basic Safety Notices" ?
You are not permitted to operate the
device before doing so.
Before working with the device you
must put on your personal protective
clothing, if necessary. For example,
eye protectors, gloves, etc.
To avoid damage, do not move the
center roller by hand.
Tensions that exceed the tension
range of the instrument by more than
100% may cause permanent damage
to the measuring spring and must be
avoided under any circumstances.
2.3 Unpacking
Unpack the tension meter and inspect
it for any shipping damage.
Notices of defect must be filed
immediately in writing, at the latest
within 10 days on receipt of the
goods.

3.1 Operating Elements

Before first use of your tension meter you need to insert the batteries.
If the DISPLAY 7shows , the batteries have to be replaced.
To insert the batteries:
- Loosen the BLACK Phillips screws 8(2 x) on the back of the tension meter.
- Open the cover 9of the battery compartment on the front of the tension meter.
- Insert the batteries (2 x
A A A 1.5V) into the battery compartment. Please ensure
proper polarity.
- Close the cover 9on the front of the tension meter.
- Tighten the Philipps screws 8(2 x) on the back of the tension meter again.
3.2 Battery Insertion
If the instrument will not be used for a longer
period of time, the batteries should be removed.
Used batteries must be disposed of
in compliance with local regulations.

WARNING
The holding screws for the measuring spring
located on the rear side of the tension meter
must not be loosened under any circumstances.
Factory use only! Loosening these screws may
alter the calibration of the instrument.

- Press the ON / OFF key 5until all symbols are shown
on the DISPLAY 7.
3.3 Switch-On
- Release the ON / OFF key 5.
- The DISPLAY 7 momentarily shows the tension range
and the version number of the internal program.
If a lower-case “d” is displayed next to the tension range, the default
setting of the damping factor has been changed.
3.4 Changing the Damping Factor
- Press and hold the ZERO key 6.
- Press and hold the ON / OFF key 5.
The tension meter switches on and the display 7shows all symbols.
- Press the ON / OFF key 5to switch off the tension meter.
After about 6 seconds, the display 7 shows “d”. When you release the
keys, the default damping factor (dS...6) or the damping factor that
was last set is displayed.
- Set the desired damping factor with the ZERO key 6.
- Press the ON / OFF key 5to switch off the tension meter.
The displayed factor is saved.
The tension meter is provided with an adjustable damping feature with which you can
set the default factor of “6” to a value within a range from 4 to 9. Increasing the factor
enhances the damping effect, decreasing the factor reduces the damping effect.
For example:
Default setting: 6 = 6 old tension values + 4 new tension values

New setting: 4 = 4 old tension values + 6 new tension values

To change the damping factor:
3.5 Zero Adjustment of the Measuring Position (Auto Zero)
- Place the ZEF / ZED in the desired measuring position.
Be careful to hold the ZEF / ZED absolutely steady.
- Press and hold the ZERO key 6until the display 7 shows
(“0.0” ZEF 100), (“0” ZEF 200), ( “0” ZED 500).
- Release the ZERO key 6.
The ZEF / ZED is now calibrated for the new measuring position.
The instrument is calibrated according to the SCHMIDT factory procedure for a verti-
cal material path. If you want to operate the instrument with any other material path,
you need to adjust it to the new position directly after switch-on.This readjustment is
necessary to compensate for the weight of the measuring roller in the new measuring
position. The new material path only remains effective until the instrument is switched
off.
Caution
Positioning has to be made in any case, if material path has
changed, respectively if instrument does not show zero “0”.
A measuring good must not be threaded.

The display 7will now show the measured tension.
To insert the process material:
To remove the process material:
- Push the thumbpiece 11 as far as it will go in the direction of the arrow.
- With the outer rollers extended, move the instrument away from the material 3.
-Slowly release pressure on the thumbpiece 11 until the outer rollers return to their
original positions.

WARNING
It is essential that the thumbpiece return slowly to its initial position.
Any uncontrolled snap-back may affect calibration and may also
damage the instrument.
- Push the thumbpiece 11 as far as it will go in
the direction of the arrow to extend the outer
guide rollers 2.
- Capture the process material 3with the
filament guide 12 (see fig. 3.6).
-Slowly release pressure on the thumb-
piece 11 until the outer rollers return to
their original positions.
It is important to assure that the process
material 3 runs smoothly between the
guide rollers 2 and the measuring roller 1.

3.6 Operating Procedure
Requirements: Batteries inserted (Ch. 3.2)
Damping factor changed, if necessary (Ch. 3.4)
Zero adjustment performed (Ch. 3.5)
Tension meter switched on (Ch. 3.3)
3.7 Troubleshooting
If the error messages are still displayed after the possible causes of the error have
been removed, the tension meter needs to be returned to the factory for repair.
Message: ZEF-100 or ZEF-200 and ZEF-500
If this message is shown on the DISPLAY 7:
The tension has exceeded the allowable tension range.
Remedy:
- Immediately switch off the instrument to avoid damage to the built-in measuring spring.
- Reduce the tension.
Message: ZEF-100 or ZEF-200 and ZEF-500
If this message is shown on the DISPLAY 7:
The tension has exceeded or is lower than the allowable tension range.
Remedy:
- Immediately switch off the instrument to avoid damage to the built-in measuring spring.
- Check whether the process material has been properly inserted as described in
chapter 3.6 and reinsert, if necessary.
- Measuring spring defective, return the tension meter to the factory.

All tension meters are calibrated with standard materials - such as polyamide
monofilament (PA) - according to the SCHMIDT factory procedure.The filament sizes
are noted in chapter 2. Any difference in process material size and rigidity from the
standard material may cause a deviation of the accuracy.
In 95% of all industrial applications the SCHMIDT calibration has been proven to
provide the best results and is used for comparative purposes.
If the material to be measured differs significantly from the standard SCHMIDT
calibration material in diameter, rigidity, shape, etc., we recommend calibration using
customer material. For this purpose, a material sample of 5 m should be supplied.
Verification procedure:
3.8 Verification of Calibration
- Suspend a known weight that corresponds to the tension to be measured (please
ensure the proper unit of measure) from the measured material 3, vertically,
as shown in the above figures.
(Always use a fresh portion of the material to be measured.)
- Push the thumbpiece 11 as far as it will go in the direction of the arrow and thread
the process material 3 between the guide rollers 2and measuring roller 3 as
described in chapter 3.6.
-Slowly release pressure on the thumbpiece 11 until the outer rollers return to their
original positions.
WARNING
It is essential that the thumbpiece return slowly to its initial position.
Any uncontrolled snap-back may affect calibration and may also
damage the instrument.
- Before the final check, move the instrument slowly up and down to compensate any
friction caused by the instrument and thus ensure repeatability.
- The tension value on the display 7 should be equal to the suspended weight.
If this procedure shows a deviation beyond the allowable tolerance, the instrument
has to be recalibrated or repaired.
For recalibration, return the tension meter to the factory.

4 Service and Maintenance
The tension meter is easy to maintain.
Depending on operating time and load, the tension meter should be checked accord-
ing to the locally valid regulations and conditions (as described in chapter 3.8).
The use of other test methods as the procedure described in chapter 3.8 may cause
deviating measuring results.
The question of finding the right frequency of calibration accuracy verification
depends on several different factors:
èOperating time and load of the SCHMIDT tension meter
èTolerance band defined by the customer
èChanges of the tolerance band compared to previous verifications of calibration
Therefore, the interval between calibrations must be determined by the user himself,
in consultation with the Quality Assurance department.
Assuming normal operating time and load as well as careful handling of the tension
meter, we recommend a verification interval of one year.
For cleaning the unit, do not use any AGGRESSIVE SOLVENTS
such as trichloroethylene or similar chemicals.
NO WARRANTY OR LIABILITY shall be accepted
for damage resulting from improper cleaning.
4.3 Verification Intervals

You should regularly inspect the rollers to assure that they are running easily and
smoothly.You can replace the rollers yourself, as necessary. In such a case, please
indicate the tension meter model and the serial number (given on the back of the
tension meter) in your spare-parts order.

We kindly ask for return free of charge for us, if possible by airmail parcel.
All occurring charges, if any (such as freight, customs clearance, duty, etc.) will be
