OncetheConsolehasyourinitialheartrate,donotmoveorshiftyourhandsfor10to15seconds.TheConsolewillnowvalidatetheheartrate.Manyfactorsinfluencethe
abilityofthesensorstodetectyourheartratesignal:
•Movementoftheupperbodymuscles(includingarms)producesanelectricalsignal(muscleartifact)thatcaninterferewithpulsedetection.Slighthandmovementwhile
incontactwiththesensorscanalsoproduceinterference.
•Callusesandhandlotionmayactasaninsulatinglayertoreducethesignalstrength.
•SomeElectrocardiogram(EKG)signalsgeneratedbyindividualsarenotstrongenoughtobedetectedbythesensors.
Ifyourheartratesignaleverseemserraticaftervalidation,wipeoffyourhandsandthesensorsandtryagain.

Yourmaximumheartrateusuallydecreasesfrom220BeatsPerMinute(BPM)inchildhoodtoapproximately160BPMbyage60.Thisfallinheartrateisusuallylinear,
decreasingbyapproximatelyoneBPMforeachyear.Thereisnoindicationthattraininginfluencesthedecreaseinmaximumheartrate.Individualsofthesameagecould
havedifferentmaximumheartrates.Itismoreaccuratetofindthisvaluebygettingastresstestthanbyusinganagerelatedformula.
Youratrestheartrateisinfluencedbyendurancetraining.Thetypicaladulthasanatrestheartrateofapproximately72BPM,whereashighlytrainedrunnersmay
havereadingsof40BPMorlower.
TheHeartRatetableisanestimateofwhatHeartRateZone(HRZ)iseffectivetoburnfatandbetteryourcardiovascularsystem.Physicalconditionsvary,therefore
yourindividualHRZcouldbeseveralbeatshigherorlowerthanwhatisshown.
Themostefficientproceduretoburnfatduringexerciseistostartataslowpaceandgraduallyincreaseyourintensityuntilyourheartratereachesbetween60–85%
ofyourmaximumheartrate.Continueatthatpace,keepingyourheartrateinthattargetzoneforover20minutes.Thelongeryoumaintainyourtargetheartrate,the
morefatyourbodywillburn.
