Users who are not professionally trained for bicycle assembly should not attempt to
install the components themselves using the dealer's manuals.

The following instructions must be observed at all times in order to prevent personal injury
and physical damage to equipment and surroundings. The instructions are classified
according to the degree of danger or damage which may occur if the product is used
incorrectly.

WARNING
• Be sure to follow the instructions provided in the manuals when installing the product.
It is recommended to use SHIMANO genuine parts only. If parts such as bolts and nuts
become loose or damaged, the bicycle may suddenly fall over, which may cause serious
injury.
In addition, if adjustments are not carried out correctly, problems may occur, and the
bicycle may suddenly fall over, which may cause serious injury.
•Be sure to wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes while performing
maintenance tasks such as replacing parts.
•After reading the dealer's manual thoroughly, keep it in a safe place for later reference.
Be sure to also inform users of the following:
• Downhill bicycle riding and freeriding are inherently dangerous activities. There is a risk
of being involved in an accident that can result in a serious injury or even death. It is
strongly recommended that riders wear protective head and body gear and perform
thorough safety checks of their bicycles before riding. Please remember that you are
riding at your own risk and that you have to consider your experience and your skills
very carefully.
• Check that there are no cracks in the crank arms before riding the bicycle. If there are
any cracks, the crank arm may break and you may fall off the bicycle.
•Be careful not to let the hemming of your clothes get caught in the chain while riding.
Otherwise you may fall off the bicycle.
CAUTION
For installation to the bicycle, and maintenance:
•There is the danger of injury from the tips of the teeth on the chainrings.
NOTE
For installation to the bicycle, and maintenance:
•Use a neutral detergent to clean the crank arm and the bottom bracket. Using alkaline or
acidic detergents may cause discoloration.

TO ENSURE SAFETY
•If pedaling performance does not feel normal, check the bicycle once more.
•Do not wash the bottom bracket with high-pressure jets of water. Water may enter the
bearing section and cause noise or adhesion.
•The gears should be periodically washed with a neutral detergent. In addition, cleaning
the chain with neutral detergent and lubricating it can be an effective way of extending
the life of the gears and the chain.
•The cuffs of your clothing may get dirty from the chain while riding.
•This product is not warranted against damage resulting from improper use, such as
jumping while riding or if the bicycle falls over, except if such malfunctions are caused by
manufacturing methods.
•Products are not guaranteed against natural wear and deterioration from normal use
and aging.
•For maximum performance we highly recommend SHIMANO lubricants and maintenance
products.
The actual product may differ from the illustration because this manual is
intended mainly to explain the procedures for using the product.

About compatibility
INSTALLATION/REMOVAL
For bicycles with rear suspension, make sure in advance that there is no weight applied to the
rear suspension.
NOTE
•When installing parts on a carbon frame, confirm the recommended tightening torque
with the carbon frame or part manufacturer in order to prevent damage to the carbon
material due to overtightening or inadequate securing of the components due to
insufficient tightening torque.
About compatibility
The SM-CD800 is the chain device designated for use with the following models.

This type is installed on the ISCG mounting boss of the frame. Perform the installation with the
front chainring and chain fully assembled.
1. Adjust the chain position to the smallest sprocket.

2. Temporarily mount the bracket.
(1) Insert the bracket between the chainring and frame.
(2) Temporarily mount the bracket from the gaps in the chainring.

3. Adjust the height of the guide.
(1) Loosen the guide mounting bolt half a turn.
* When the guide mounting bolt is loosened, the guide can be moved up and down.
Be careful not to loosen the bolt excessively, as this will increase the looseness of the
guide and make position alignment difficult to perform.
(2) Adjust the vertical position of the guide.
* Set the guide so that the bottom edge of the chain and the bottom edge of the
guide overlap when viewed from the right crank side.
* Do not tighten the guide mounting bolt at this time.

4. Adjust the gap between the guide and chain.
Turn the adjuster and adjust until the following conditions are met.
• The gap between the chain and the inside surface of the guide outer side is 0 - 0.5 mm
• The gap between the guide and adjuster is 3 mm or less

NOTE
•Depending on the frame, the two conditions above may not be met. If this occurs,
adjust in the following manner.
(1) Measure the gap between the adjuster and the guide and confirm the value that
exceeds 3 mm.
(2) Temporarily remove the bracket.
(3) Insert the two types of spacers included with the product between the bracket and
the frame and adjust the installation position in accordance with the value
confirmed in step (1). The two types of spacers included with the product consist of a
1.25 mm spacer and a 2.5 mm spacer.

5. Secure the guide.

NOTE
•When tightening the guide mounting bolt, the adjuster may rotate along with the
bolt. In this case, hold down the adjuster with your finger while tightening the guide
mounting bolt.

6. Adjust the position of the guide and chain.
• Move the bracket left and right from the right side of the crank and align the position
of the top of the chain with the groove on the inside surface of the guide.
• There are two grooves on the inside surface of the guide. Align the upper edge of the
chain with the lower groove for bicycles with rear suspension or with the upper groove
for hardtails.

7. Secure the bracket.
This completes the installation process for the ISCG type.

NOTE
•After installing the chain device, make sure that the top portion of the bracket is not
touching the frame or rear suspension.
•After installing the chain device, turn the crank and make sure that there is no
abnormal noise caused by the chain striking the guide.
•Similarly, make sure that there is no abnormal noise caused by the chain striking the
guide when shifting to the largest sprocket or when the rear suspension is depressed.
Direct mount type
This type is installed on the direct mount mounting boss for the front derailleur on the frame.
Perform the installation with the front chainring and chain fully assembled.
1. Adjust the chain position to the smallest sprocket.

If the width of the rear end is 148 mm, install without the spacer.

E Type
NOTE
•When tightening the guide mounting bolt, the adjuster may rotate along with the
bolt. In this case, hold down the adjuster with your finger while tightening the guide
mounting bolt.
•After installing the chain device, turn the crank and make sure that there is no

E Type
This type is installed on the E type mounting boss for the front derailleur on the frame or above
the plate that is tightened together with the bottom bracket. The plate is not included with this
component.
Installation is not possible with the front chainring already installed.
1. Remove the guide from the bracket.
This step is not necessary if you are using a 30T or 32T chainring.

(1) Temporarily mount the guide.
* If guide is not removed, it can be moved up and down by loosening the mounting
bolt half a turn. Be careful not to loosen the bolt excessively, as this will increase the

(2) Adjust the vertical position of the guide.
* Set the guide so that the bottom edge of the chain and the bottom edge of the
guide overlap when viewed from the right crank side.
* Do not tighten the guide mounting bolt at this time.

6. Secure the guide.
This completes the installation process for the E type.
