Introduction 1

1.1 Purpose of this documentation

These instructions are a brief summary of important features, functions and safety information,

and contain all necessary information required for safe use of the respective devices. Read the

manual carefully prior to assembly and startup! To ensure correct handling, become acquainted

with the principle of operation of the respective device.

The instructions are aimed at persons who mechanically assemble the devices, connect them

electrically, and commission them.

To achieve optimum usage of the respective device read the detailed version of the respective

operating instructions.

1.2 Product versions

These instructions apply to the 󹪝eld devices of Series 6. These include the devices listed below:

These gas analyzers are suitable for a wide variety of measuring tasks and are also available in

di󹪜erent versions. The data on the label, among others, indicates which device version you have.

The label of an OXYMAT 6F is shown below as an example.

1.4 General information

This device left the factory in a safe and proper condition and has been tested. In order to

maintain this condition and to ensure safe operation of this product, it should only be used in the

manner described by the manufacturer. Furthermore, proper transportation, storage,

installation, operation and maintenance of the device are vital for ensuring correct and safe

operation.

This manual contains the information required for the intended use of the described product.

It is addressed to technically quali󹪝ed personnel who are specially trained or who have the

relevant knowledge of automation technology (measuring and control systems).

Knowledge and technically correct implementation of the safety notes and warnings contained

in this manual are required for safe installation and commissioning, as well as for safety during

the operation and maintenance of the described product. Only quali󹪝ed personnel have the

required professional knowledge for correctly interpreting the generally valid safety notes and

warnings in this manual in each speci󹪝c case and to act accordingly.

This manual is an inherent part of the scope of delivery, despite the fact that it can be ordered

separately for logistic reasons.

Due to the variety of technical details, it is not possible to consider every single detail for all

versions of the described product and for every conceivable case in the set-up, operation,

maintenance and use in systems. For further information, or in the case of problems which are

This manual provides you with information on commissioning, installing, operating, and

maintaining the device.

1.6 Proper use

Proper use within the context of this document means that the product may be used only for the

applications described in the catalog or the technical description, and only in combination with

the equipment, components and devices of other manufacturers recommended or permitted by

Siemens.

The product described in this document has been developed manufactured, tested and

documented in compliance with relevant safety standards. When the handling rules described

for the con󹪝guration, installation, proper operation and maintenance, as well at the safety

guidelines are adhered to, therefore, there is normally no risk to the health of persons or in

respect to damage to property.

This product was designed to ensure safe isolation of the primary and secondary circuits. Low

voltages that are connected must therefore also be generated with safe isolation.

1.7 Quali󹪝ed Personnel

Quali󹪝ed personnel are people who are familiar with the installation, mounting,

commissioning, and operation of the product. These people have the following quali󹪝cations:

• They are authorized, trained or instructed in operating and maintaining devices and systems

according to the safety regulations for electrical circuits, high pressures and aggressive as

well as hazardous media.

• For explosion-proof devices: they are authorized, trained, or instructed in carrying out work

on electrical circuits for hazardous systems.

• They are trained or instructed in maintenance and use of appropriate safety equipment

according to the safety regulations.

1.8 Notes on warranty

The contents of this manual shall not become part of or modify any prior or existing agreement,

commitment or legal relationship. The sales contract contains all obligations on the part of

Siemens as well as the complete and solely applicable warranty conditions. Any statements

regarding device versions described in the manual do not create new warranties or modify the

existing warranty.

The content re󹪞ects the technical status at the time of publishing. Siemens reserves the right to

make technical changes in the course of further development.

1.9 Delivery information

The respective scope of delivery is listed on the shipping documents in accordance with the valid

sales contract. These are enclosed with the delivery.

When opening the packaging, please observe the corresponding information on the packaging

material. Check the delivery for completeness and undamaged condition. In particular, the

Order No. on the labels, if present, must be compared with the ordering data.

1.10 Standards and regulations

As far as possible, the harmonized European standards were the basis for the speci󹪝cation and

production of this device. If no harmonized European standards have been applied, the

standards and regulations for the Federal Republic of Germany are valid.

When this product is used beyond the scope of these standards and regulations, the valid

standards and regulations of the country of the operating company apply.

2.1 Precondition for use

This device left the factory in good working condition. In order to maintain this status and to

ensure safe operation of the device, observe these instructions and all the speci󹪝cations relevant

to safety.

Observe the information and symbols on the device. Do not remove any information or symbols

from the device. Always keep the information and symbols in a completely legible state.

WARNING

Improper device modi󹪝cations

Risk to personnel, system and environment can result from modi󹪝cations to the device,

particularly in hazardous areas.

• Only carry out modi󹪝cations that are described in the instructions for the device. Failure to

observe this requirement cancels the manufacturer's warranty and the product approvals.

NOTICE

Manipulation of the device

Physical access to the device enables undesired manipulations of the device. As a result of this,

the device can lose its measuring properties and become unusable.

• Ensure that the device is located in a protected area to which only authorized persons have

access.

• If no settings need be carried out, lock the device.

WARNING

Harmful gases

Danger to personnel, system and the environment can result from introducing harmful

(corrosive, 󹪞ammable and/or poisonous) gases into the device. If this should be required for the

measuring task of the device, you must take the following measures:

• Take into account the safety measures according to the German Occupational Safety Act

(Arbeitsschutzgesetz - ArbSchG) or similar international regulations. These safety measures

must be coordinated with a local specialist. In particular, this includes measures to prevent

any potential release of gases from the internal gas path (containment system) as well as

their monitoring and disposal.

• Ensure that the discharged gas is treated according to the applicable local laws.

• When you measure gases with 󹪞ammable components at concentrations above the lower

explosion limit (LEL), we recommend that you only use piped devices (see also report BB-

EG1-KAR Gr02X from TÜV Süddeutschland).

• Purge the device or the plant with a purging gas (inert gas). The gas displaced by purging

must be collected using appropriate equipment and disposed of environmentally-friendly

via an exhaust line.

Safety instructions

2.1 Precondition for use

WARNING

Harmful substances in the condensate

The condensate at the sample gas cooler or condensation trap can be corrosive, depending on

the composition of the sample gas (e.g.: through SO2, NO, H2S, HCl, etc.). When you dip litmus

paper into the condensate it will turn red.

• Wear protective clothing, protective goggles and protective gloves when handling the

condensate!

• Prior to its disposal, dilute the condensate with tap water until it turns neutral and the litmus

paper does not change color. Alternatively, you can also neutralize the condensate with a

weak sodium carbonate solution (Na2CO3).

2.2 Analyzers in hazardous areas

WARNING

Incorrect choice of explosion protection type

Danger of explosion in hazardous areas.

If this device is approved for various types of protection:

1. Choose one type of protection.

2. Connect the device according to this type of protection.

3. To prevent improper use at a later time, conceal the other protection types on the label that

2.2.1 Overpressure monitoring

You must connect an appropriate purging unit in the case of analyzers with type of protection

"Pressurized enclosure Ex px or Ex pz". This purging unit ensures that the overpressure is

monitored reliably and that the volume 󹪞ow is monitored fail-safe (redundant).

If an analyzer is used with type of protection "Pressurized enclosure Ex pz" in Zone 2, you must

provide a purging unit with type of protection "Ex px" when connecting combustible or

occasionally explosive sample gases.

2.2.2 External explosion protection

Overview

The external explosion protection serves to prevent penetration of explosive gas mixtures (gas

damp) into the enclosure or ignition on the surface. For this reason, the analyzer is purged with

protective gas and - with category 2 devices (Ex zone 1) - the control panel additionally operated

via an intrinsically-safe isolating component.

2.2.2.1 Pre-purging phase

The pre-purging phase serves to displace any combustible gases present prior to switching on

the analyzer. During this time (5 min), the enclosure is purged with 5 times its own volume.

2.2.2.2 Operating phase

The pre-purging phase is followed by the operating phase:

•Ex px with leakage compensation; only the volume of protective gas required to hold an

overpressure of at least 50 Pa (recommended 5 hPa) compared to the atmosphere and the

sample gas is added.

• In Ex px or Ex pz mode with continuous purging, the protective gas 󹪞ows through the

enclosure at ≥ 1 l/min. An overpressure of at least 50 Pa (recommended 5 hPa) compared

to the atmosphere is built up at the same time.

Either inert gas (e.g. nitrogen) or air must be used as the protective gas depending on the sample

gas composition. Dissipation of the protective gas into the Ex zone is only permissible with spark

protection and a particle barrier.

2.2.3 Internal explosion protection

Internal explosion protection refers to the sample gas path (containment system CS) in the

analyzer and to the ignition protection of the process gas. A di󹪜erentiation must be made

between the following cases:

•Non-combustible sample gases and gas mixtures below the LEL:

Flame arrestors can be omitted. However, it must be guaranteed that the sample gas in the

CS always remains below the lower explosive limit!

•Occasionally explosive sample gases:

These may only be introduced into the CALOMAT 6F/CALOMAT 62F and OXYMAT 6F gas

analyzers if the inlets and outlets for sample gas and reference gas have each been provided

with a 󹪞ame arrestor. The 󹪞ame arrestors must meet the safety requirements for the

combustible medium.

The following applies to the reference gas path of the OXYMAT 6F:

A 󹪞ame arrestor can be omitted at the reference gas inlet if it is guaranteed that the

reference gas is introduced before the analyzer is switched on and that the reference gas

pressure is monitored continuously.

The ULTRAMAT 6F analyzer may also be operated without 󹪞ame arrestors.

These must be individually assessed in accordance with a separate certi󹪝cate based on on-

site acceptance testing using inert gas as the protective gas.

2.2.4 Further safety measures

The exhaust lines for the sample and reference gases must terminate outside the hazardous

area at a safe place. The sample gas exhaust line can also be returned to the sampling point.

When sample gases (both combustible and non-combustible) are discharged into the hazardous

area, you provide the sample gas inlet and outlet with a 󹪞ame arrestor each.

When combustible media are supplied, you must interrupt the sample gas supply after switch-

o󹪜 of the analyzer and pressurized enclosure or when the pressurized enclosure responds under

fault conditions.

The maximum permissible sample gas pressure in the analyzer depends on whether the

introduced gas type is combustible or non-combustible and is described in the technical

speci󹪝cations under the point "Sample gas inlet conditions".
