Introduction 1
1.1 Purpose of this documentation
These instructions contain all information required to commission and use the device. It is
your responsibility to read the instructions carefully prior to installation and commissioning. In
order to use the device correctly, first review its principle of operation.
The instructions are aimed at persons mechanically installing the device, connecting it
electronically, configuring the parameters and commissioning it, as well as service and
maintenance engineers.

1.4 Checking the consignment
1. Check the packaging and the device for visible damage caused by inappropriate handling
during shipping.
2. Report any claims for damages immediately to the shipping company.
3. Retain damaged parts for clarification.
4. Check the scope of delivery by comparing the shipping documents with your order for
correctness and completeness.

1.5 Transportation and storage
To guarantee sufficient protection during transport and storage, observe the following:
● Keep the original packaging for subsequent transportation.
● Devices/replacement parts should be returned in their original packaging.
● If the original packaging is no longer available, ensure that all shipments are properly
packaged to provide sufficient protection during transport. Siemens cannot assume
liability for any costs associated with transportation damages.
CAUTION
Insufficient protection during storage
The packaging only provides limited protection against moisture and infiltration.
Provide additional packaging as necessary.
Special conditions for storage and transportation of the device are listed in Chapter
"Technical data (Page 155)".

2.1 Requirement for safe use
2.1.1 Precondition for use
This device left the factory in good working condition. In order to maintain this status and to
ensure safe operation of the device, observe these instructions and all the specifications
relevant to safety.
Observe the information and symbols on the device. Do not remove any information or
symbols from the device. Always keep the information and symbols in a completely legible
state.

Improper device modifications
Danger to personnel, system and environment can result from modifications to the device,
particularly in hazardous areas.
Only carry out modifications that are described in the instructions for the device. Failure
to observe this requirement cancels the manufacturer's warranty and the product
approvals.
2.3 Requirements for special applications
Due to the large number of possible applications, each detail of the described device
versions for each possible scenario during commissioning, operation, maintenance or
operation in systems cannot be considered in the instructions. If you need additional
information not covered by these instructions, contact your local Siemens office or company
representative.
Note
Operation under special ambient conditions
We highly recommend that you contact your Siemens representative or our application
department before you operate the device under special ambient conditions as can be
encountered in nuclear power plants or when the device is used for research and
development purposes.

Qualified personnel for hazardous area applications
Persons who install, assemble, commission, operate and service the device in a hazardous
area must have the following specific qualifications:
● They are authorized, trained or instructed in operating and maintaining devices and
systems according to the safety regulations for electrical circuits, high pressures and
aggressive as well as hazardous media.
● They are authorized, trained, or instructed in carrying out work on electrical circuits for
hazardous systems.
● They are trained or instructed in maintenance and use of appropriate safety equipment
according to the pertinent safety regulations.
WARNING
Unsuitable device for the hazardous area
Danger of explosion.
Only use equipment that is approved for use in hazardous area and labelled
accordingly.
Make sure that the device is suitable for the area of use.
WARNING
Loss of the safety of the device with type of protection "Intrinsic safety Ex i"
If the device has already been operated in non-intrinsically safe circuits or with a higher
voltage, the safety of the device is no longer ensured for use in hazardous areas. There is a
danger of explosion.
Connect the device in "intrinsic safety" type of protection solely to an intrinsically safe
circuit.
Observe the specifications for the electrical data in the certificate and in the Chapter
"Technical data (Page 155)".

3.1 Application
Overview
The intelligent electropneumatic positioner is used, for example, in the following industries:
● Chemical
● Oil and gas
● Energy production
● Food and beverage
● Pulp and paper
● Water, waste water
● Pharmaceutical
● Mining and aggregates
The positioner is used for the continuous control of valves with single- or double-acting
pneumatic actuators. The positioner can be installed on a wide range of linear and part-turn
actuators.
Setpoints and electrical power supply for the positioner are fed through a 4 to 20 mA setpoint
signal. As an option, HART communication and an alarm module with digital inputs and
outputs are also available. Also available as an option is a module for position feedback,
which outputs the valve position using a 4 to 20 mA signal.
Device versions
Positioners can be supplied:
● For single and double-acting actuators
● For non-hazardous applications
● For use as an intrinsically-safe device Ex ia or Ex n
● With and without HART communication through the 4 to 20 mA control pulse
SIL
As an option, the SITRANS VP300 is available as a SIL device. In that case, the following
applies:
For use in a safety-instrumented system (SIS), the safe shutdown function is designed with
SIL 2. On request using digital input DI 3 or in the case of failure of the electrical or
pneumatic supply, ventilation is carried with actuating pressure Y1. A connected single-
acting actuator moves the valve into the safe final position.

The SIL device is certified in order to test partial strokes in applications up to SIL 2. The
result of this so-called partial stroke test is then reported with digital output DO 1 (fail-safe).
Optionally, the result can also be reported through HART communication.
3.2 Structure
3.2.1 Overview of structure
Introduction
The electropneumatic positioner is made up of the following components:
● Enclosure and cover
● Display module with terminals
● Controller module
● Sensors for non-contacting position detection
● Pneumatic block
The valve block is located in the enclosure. Both the pneumatic interface and the mechanical
interface of the SITRANS VP300 are provided by the innovative OPOS. Behind this name
stand the directive VDI/VDE 3847, with additional functionality and greater customer benefit.
The positioner is mounted on the front with only two screws and is ready for operation
without any external piping. If the interface of the actuator does not correspond with the
VDI/VDE 3847 directive, the positioner is mounted using the adapter block of the
corresponding mounting kit. An overview of the mounting kits can be found in the FI 01
catalog.
With the SITRANS VP300, position detection is carried out on a non-contacting basis using a
magnet and sensors in the positioner. The magnet for position detection on a non-contact
basis is in the magnet clamp. In the case of linear actuators, the magnet clamp is attached to
the drive spindle and moves up and down on the back of the positioner. In the case of part-
turn actuators, the magnet clamp is attached to the shaft butt of the drive and turns
underneath the positioner. The valve position is detected by the robust GMR principle, which
identifies the direction of the magnetic field lines. GMR stands for "giant magnetoresistance".
Gauges for displaying pressure can be fastened to the adapter block as an accessory, and
you can connect a safety solenoid valve. A shutdown tap for the compressed air
connections, which is useful when replacing the device without having to shut down the
equipment, can also be connected.

The positioner regulates e.g. valves:
● With a linear actuator or an integrated linear actuator with an interface according to
VDI/VDE 3847. The linear actuator with an interface according to VDI/VDE 3847 requires
only a magnet clamp for position detection and no additional mounting kit.
● With a part-turn actuators or an integrated part-turn actuators with an interface according
to VDI/VDE 3847. The part-turn actuator with an interface according to VDI/VDE 3847
requires only a magnet clamp for position detection and no additional mounting kit.
Digital inputs
In its standard form, the electropneumatic positioner has two digital inputs DI 1 and DI 3.
Digital input DI 1 can be parameterized and assumes e.g. the following tasks:
● Blocking the actuator
● Moving the actuator
Digital input DI 3 is only used to move the actuator into a safety position.
Option modules
The device provides slots for option modules, which can be used to retrofit the following
functions or order them directly from the factory:
● Position feedback module
Position feedback is carried out as a 4 to 20 mA signal.
● Alarm module
– 3 freely parameterized digital outputs
– 1 freely parameterized digital input (digital input DI 2)
