READ THIS FIRST
Safety precautions
Read this instruction for use fully. Follow all safety precautions to avoid personal
injury or property damage during equipment operation. SKF cannot be responsible
for damage or injury resulting from unsafe product use, lack of maintenance or
incorrect equipment operation. In case of any uncertainties as regards the use of
the equipment contact SKF.
Failure to comply with the following could cause equipment damage and personal injury.
• Do ensure that the equipment is only operated by trained personnel.
• Do wear proper personal protective gear, such as eye protection and protective gloves,
when operating the equipment.
• Do inspect the equipment and all accessories carefully before use.
• Do not use damaged components or modify the equipment.
• Do use clean recommended hydraulic oils (SKF LHMF 300, LHDF 900 or similar).
• Do not use glycerin or water based fluids as a pressure medium. Premature equipment
wear or damage can result.
• Do connect the equipment to a clean and dry air supply.
• Do not exceed the maximum allowed 7 bar (105 psi) air pressure.
• Do not use the equipment above the stated maximum hydraulic pressure.
• Do not use accessories rated below the maximum pressure of the air-driven pump or oil
injector.
• Do not use washers on sealing surfaces
• Do use a pressure gauge to monitor the oil outlet pressure, wherever possible.
• Do ensure that all the air has been removed from the hydraulic system before pressurising
the hydraulic system
• Do prevent the workpiece (e.g. bearing, gearwheel or similar item) from being forcibly
ejected upon sudden release of pressure (e.g. by use of retaining nut).
• Do not handle pressurized hoses or pressurized high pressure pipes.
Oil under pressure can penetrate the skin, causing serious injury.
If oil is injected under the skin, seek medical attention immediately.
• Do not use damaged hoses or damaged high pressure pipes. Avoid sharp bends and kinks
when connecting hoses and pipes. Sharp bends and kinks will internally damage the hose
or pipe leading to premature failure. Applying pressure to a damaged hose or pipe may
cause it to rupture.
• Do not connect high pressure pipes to the THAP 300E or 400E without using the
protection device supplied.
• Do not exceed the maximum torque tightening figures given in this instruction for use.
• Do not use dirty oil hoses. The oil container can become contaminated leading to
premature equipment wear and failure.
• Do not lift the equipment by the hoses, high pressure pipes or couplings.
Only use the carrying handle.
• Do not leave the equipment unattended whilst operating.
• Do follow local safety regulations
• Do service the equipment by a qualified hydraulic technician or SKF Repair Centre.
• Do replace worn or damaged parts with genuine SKF parts.

1. Application
1.1 Air-driven oil pumps THAP 030E and THAP 150E
The THAP 030E is designed to have an oil outlet pressure of 30 MPa (4 350 psi).
The THAP 150E is designed to have an oil outlet pressure of 150 MPa (21 750 psi).
Depending on the maximum oil pressure required, they are suitable for applications such
as bolt tensioning and pressurizing large hydraulic nuts.
Compared to hand operated oil pumps, the use of air-driven oil pumps can save
considerable time and effort.
1.2 Air-driven oil injectors THAP 300E and THAP 400E
The THAP 300E is designed to have an oil outlet pressure of 300 MPa (43 500 psi).
The THAP 400E is designed to have an oil outlet pressure of 400 MPa (58 000 psi).
Depending on the maximum oil pressure required, they are particularly suitable for
mounting and dismounting large pressure joints. This includes applications such as
SKF OK Couplings, flywheels, gear wheels, railway wheels and impellers. Compared to
hand operated oil injectors, the use of air-driven oil injectors can save considerable time
and effort.
2. Description
The THAP ...E series contains an oil pump or injector driven by an air motor, with the air
pressure internally limited to 7 bar, which is used to produce high oil pressure.
The THAP ...E series are delivered ready for use. They are supplied in a transport box
and include suction and return hoses with quick-connection couplings. They are equipped
with a male G 3/4 nose piece, which is intended to be screwed directly into the workpiece.
As an alternative, they can be used in combination with the appropriate SKF hydraulic
accessories. Complete sets consisting of the air-driven oil pump or injector are shown in
section 6.

3.1 Minimum recommended air quality for the THAP...E series
The air quality should as a minimum satisfy the following conditions;
ISO 8573.1:2001 Compressed air -- Part 1: Contaminants and purity classes.
Solid particle: Class 5
Water: Class 4 or better depending on the ambient temperature.
(A water vapour pressure dew point at least 10 ºC below the ambient
temperature is recommended)
Oil: Class 5
3.2 Oil Cleanliness requirements and recommendations
for the THAP...E series
Dirt and metal particles in the oil can cause wear of the piston mating surfaces, leading to
excessive oil leakage and permanent damage to the THAP...E.
The recommended oil cleanliness level should meet or exceed ISO 4406:1999 20/18/15
Using fluids or oils, other than SKF mounting and dismounting fluids, can cause corrosion
and/or damage to the piston mating surfaces. Do not mix fluids or oils of different brands.
Use SKF Mounting Fluid (LHMF 300)
for mounting applications between 0 °C (32 °F) and 35 °C (95 °F) and
for dismounting applications between 0 °C (32 °F) and 10 °C (50 °F).
Use SKF Dismounting Fluid (LHDF 900)
for mounting applications between 35 °C (95 °F) and 45 °C (113 °F) and
for dismounting applications between 10°C (50 °F) and 45 °C (113 °F).
Maximum allowable viscosity of oil at operating temperature is 1 500 mm2/s.

3.3 Performance charts
The charts below shows the relationship between outlet oil pressure (MPa) and oil flow
(l/min). The oil outlet pressure is shown on the vertical axis. The oil flow is shown on
the horizontal axis. The charts show the performance of the THAP...E, when operated with
7 bar (100 psi) of air pressure.

• Connect the air-driven pump or oil injector to the workpiece. The connection can
be made directly or via a flexible pressure hose (for THAP 030E and THAP 150E),
or high pressure pipe (for THAP 300E and THAP 400E).
Remove the
G
3/4 nose piece (4) to enable connection of a high-pressure pipe or
flexible pressure hose.
• THAP 030E and 150E: Fit a G
3/4 to
G
1
/ 4 adapter nipple (228027 E), with a
maximum tightening torque of 130 Nm (96 lbf-ft). Connect the flexible pressure
hose (729834) to the adapter nipple. The flexible pressure hose can be connected to
the application using an appropriate quick connector coupling and nipple.
• THAP 300E and THAP 400E: Fit a high pressure pipe with a G
3/4 end
(e.g. 227957 A) to the hydraulic outlet block. The maximum tightening torque is

130 Nm (96 lbf-ft). Fit the protection device. Connect the free end to the application.
• Close the air valve (6) and connect the air hose to the air connection (1).
• Connect the hoses to the oil inlet (2) and the oil return (3).
• Put the free ends of the oil hoses into the oil container. Make sure that the end of
the oil suction hose is completely immersed in the oil.
• Make sure that the release valve (5) is open. Open the air valve (6) to start the
THAP...E Operate the THAP..E until no air bubbles can be seen in the oil return
hose (3).
• To start the delivery of oil, close the release valve (5).
Note: Oil can circulate through the return hose, even when the release valve is closed.
• If the THAP...E is connected to a high-pressure pipe or flexible pressure hose, the air
must be removed from the pipe or hose. Often this can be done by slightly loosening
the pipe or hose connection on the application, until air free oil emerges.
After de-airing the pipe or hose, retighten the connection.
• To stop the THAP...E, open the release valve (5) to release the oil pressure, then close
the air valve (6)
4.1 Protection device
Protection device (THAP E-PC1) must be fitted when connecting a high pressure pipe to a
THAP 300E or THAP 400E.

5. Fitting a pressure gauge
To connect a pressure gauge to the air-driven pump or
oil injector:
• Remove the gauge plug.
• Screw the pressure gauge firmly into the G 1/2
connection assembly.
Attention: Connector B, shown in the next two
illustrations, has left-hand threads!
• Adjust the connection assembly until a gap of
approximately 1 mm remains between connectors
A and B.
• Screw the complete assembly, including A, B and
the pressure gauge, into the pump or injector
body.
• Maintain the 1 mm gap during installation.
• When connector A is almost tight, turn the
pressure gauge to the correct position.
• Tighten connector A completely.
• Do not tighten on connector B.

7. Maintenance & Storage
• Clean the oil suction filter regularly (located opposite the oil inlet connection).
• Make sure the oil is clean. Contaminants will cause severe wear, and ultimately
failure, of the pump.
• Make sure the air supply is clean and dry. An unfiltered air supply can cause the air
motor to stall or stop.
• SKF recommends the use of SKF Mounting Fluid LHMF 300 and SKF Dismounting
Fluid LHDF 900.
• The maximum storage time depends on the storage conditions. Recommended
storage conditions are at room temperature with dry surrounding air.
• To prepare for storage, add a few drops of air motor oil to the air inlet of the pump.
Connect to the air supply and run the THAP...E slowly for a few strokes. The air used
should have a water vapour pressure dew point that is at least 10 ºC below the
ambient temperature where the pump is to be stored.

9. Troubleshooting guide
As high pressure oil and hydraulics constitute a potential safety risk, disconnect the air
supply hose before removing any parts from the THAP...E.
9.1 Air motor
If the air motor stalls or stops:
• Make sure that the air connection is properly mounted.
• Make sure that the air valve is open.
• Remove the breather plug from the air motor. Use a
pair of pliers to check that the air valve is not stuck.
• Apply some penetrating lubricant spray to the
air valve and into the air nipple.
• Reassemble and operate the THAP...E
(see section 4, “Operating Instructions”).
If the air motor is excessively noisy, and air is leaking
from the air motor, then the air pressure supplied to the
THAP...E is too high. The in-built air limiter will not allow
air pressures to be used above 7 bar (100 psi).
Reduce the air pressure to 7 bar (100 psi). Using air
pressures above 7 bar (100 psi) wastes compressed air.
If the air motor does not operate after these steps, return
the pump to an authorised SKF Repair Centre.
9.2 Oil pump or injector
If the THAP...E will not build up or maintain oil pressure:
• Tighten the release valve.
• Check for oil leakage.
If oil leaks from the THAP...E:
• If oil leaks in the area of the front foot, it is likely that
either the nose-piece or pressure gauge connection
is not tight enough. Internal oil leakage channels help
ensure that that the user is not exposed to oil at high
pressure in the event that the nose-piece or pressure
gauge is not tightened correctly.
• If the connection leaks, make sure the mating surfaces are not damaged.
Replace all damaged parts.
• If the mating surfaces are not damaged, tighten the connection.
If the oil pump or injector does not operate after these steps, return to an authorised
SKF Repair Centre.
