1SMARTWITNESS AP1 FAQs
AP1
FAQs
1. What does ADAS stand for?
ADAS stands for advanced driver-assistance system, which
is made up of electronic systems that assist the driver in
the safe operation of a vehicle.
2. What circumstances trigger a speeding warning?
A speeding warning is triggered anytime the vehicle exceeds
a configurable speed threshold. A threshold is set using
the AP1 configuration app or the configuration tool.
3. What is FPW?
A Forward Proximity Warning (FPW) is triggered when
an object is in the forward proximity of the vehicle with
imminent collision at low speed.
4. What is FCW?
A Forward Collision Warning (FCW) is triggered when your
vehicle is likely to collide with another object in front of
the vehicle (when traveling at faster speed).
5. What is FVSA?
A Forward Vehicle Start Alert (FVSA) is triggered when the
vehicle in front of yours begins to move forward while
your vehicle remains stopped.
6. What is LDW?
A Lane Departure Warning (LDW) is triggered when the
vehicle crosses a solid lane line while traveling at or above
the minimum speed. The minimum speed is configurable,
with 25 mph as the default.
7. Does the device alert the driver when an ADAS
event occurs?
Yes. Each alert is in the form of an audible chime, with a
unique chime associated with each ADAS function. Alerts
can be silenced. The associated chimes are configurable
in the AP1 Mobile App.
8. Are the audible notifications the same for each
event or dierent?
The audible chime notification is dierent for each ADAS
event. The associated chimes are configurable using the
AP1 Mobile App.
9. Is the audible notification a tone or an actual voice?
The notification is a unique tone, not a voice.
10. Do I need to do anything dierent to access the
new ADAS event types from SmartAPI?
Possibly. It depends on how you did the integration initially
with SmartAPI. AP1, with ADAS events enabled, will provide
four new event types: FPW, FCW, FVSA and LDW. Once the
ADAS events are enabled for your tenant in SmartAPI, your
“listener” app will receive a callback and the payload will
indicate the new event type. For example:
{
“EventLogID”: “ba3c6cf4-b9b2-40b2-8c11-ad8900290987,”
“AlarmIn”: 0,
“Altitude”: 249,
“DeviceID”: “f7d9dced-59ba-4272-aab0-ac46016db691,”
“DeviceStatus”: “Installed,”
“EventData”: null,
“EventTime”: “2021-08-19T02:29:24.7170624Z,”
“EventType”: “FCW,”
“GPSValid”: true,
Etc.
You may need to account for the new event types inside
your application. For example, if you’re re-hosting the
callbacks into your own database, change your database
to allow tracking of the new event type(s).
11. Is the product self-installable?
Yes. AP1 was purpose-built as a self-installable product.
The AP1 Quick Start Installation Guide and installation
video on the AP1 Setup | SmartWitness page will help you.
12. Can I do a hard install if desired?
No. AP1 was purpose-built to be a self-installable product.

AP1
FAQs
13. Do I need to do any calibration or setup to use
ADAS features?
Yes. Here’s how to set up the ADAS features for your AP1
in the mobile app. These instructions are also in the
AP1 Quick Start Installation Guide.
1. Once you’ve installed the device in your vehicle, turn
on the ignition and wait for the device to fully boot
up. You should see two green lights and one blue
solid light on the device.
2. Download the app from the app store.
3. Press and hold the middle button on the AP1 device
for 5 seconds, then release. After 3 seconds, you will
see one of the lights fast-blinking red/green.
4. Connect to your AP1 over Wi-Fi.
Your AP1 will be AP1_xxxx.
5. When the Wi-Fi connection prompts you for a
password, enter the last 8 digits of the IMEI
number from the sticker on the device.
6. Open the AP1 Mobile App. Tap “Connect to Camera.”
7. Download settings
8. Once connected, tap “Adjust Settings/Preferences.”
9. Scroll down. Under ADAS, ensure “Disable ADAS”
is unchecked.
10.Follow the guidelines to enter the measurements
of the front of your vehicle.
11. Go to the Main Menu and tap “Events.” Ensure
all the ADAS events are enabled, and fill in the
sensitivities and thresholds as desired.
12. Go to the Main Menu and tap “Save Changes.”
13. Go to the start page and tap “Upload Settings
to the Camera.”
14. What is the field of view of the camera?
The AP1 has a 128° field of view.
15. Can I connect a driver-facing camera to the AP1?
No.
16. Can I connect the AP1 to a CP4S?
No.
17. What is A-GPS, and how does it work?
Assisted GPS (A-GPS) will automatically engage if a satellite
GPS signal cannot be fixed with a minimum of three satellites.
GPS data is drawn from local cell towers to enhance the
data from the device’s GPS receiver. This is especially
beneficial when the GPS receiver is in a location that is not
in “line of sight” of a satellite (e.g., surrounded by tall buildings,
bad weather conditions). AP1 records the location data
source, so customers are aware if the location is from
A-GPS or GPS satellites.
18. If out of coverage, will the AP1 “store and forward”
once it’s back in cell coverage?
Yes.
19. Can the device be updated over the air (OTA)?
Yes. All our devices, including the AP1, can be updated
over the air.
20. What is the maximum storage size of the microSD
card? Can I upgrade to a larger size?
The AP1 supports up to a 128GB microSD card. Currently,
the AP1 ships with a 64GB microSD card.
21. Can the device record audio as well as video?
Yes. You can enable this option in the AP1 app under “Record.”
22. What is EMS?
The engine management system (EMS) consists of a wide
range of electronic and electrical components such as
sensors, relays, actuators and an engine control unit.
The components work together to provide the EMS
with vital data parameters.
23. What is ECU?
An engine control unit (ECU), also commonly called an
engine control module (ECM), is used in today’s cars and
trucks to control the engine and other components’ functions.
An ECU is a computer with internal preprogrammed and
programmable computer chips that is not much dierent
from a home computer or laptop. The vehicle’s ECU
operates the engine by using input sensors and output
components to control all engine functions.

throttle/accelerator position, odometer, engine coolant
temperature and oil temperature.
Please note: Which PIDs come through is highly
dependent on the manufacturer of the vehicle.
26. Will the device work with SmartView?
Yes. All our devices, including the AP1, will work with
SmartView.
27. Does the AP1 work with AIDE?
Yes. Artificial Intelligence Driving Events (AIDE) on the AP1
leverages industry-best SmartAnalytics technology, taking
into account a wider range of situational context to filter
out and reduce false positives by as much as tenfold.
28. Can I transfer the AP1 to another vehicle?
Yes. Because the AP1 is a self-installable product, it is fairly
easy to remove from one vehicle and install into another.
Please ensure you can accommodate device moves from
one vehicle to another in your web application and the
SmartWitness SmartAPI cloud application.
29. Can I see events/recordings/notifications on the
AP1 Mobile App?
The AP1 Mobile App is currently for calibration/configuration
only. AP1 “device viewer” functionality is in development.
30. What is the video quality?
The video quality is 1080p at 30FPS.
31. Can I use the AP1 as a stand-alone system
(non-connected)?
Yes, but that isn’t a practical approach until device viewer
functionality is available.
32. If the device alerts me, how do I know which event
is occurring?
You can preview, choose and set up a chime notification
for each event type in the app.
33. How much video can be stored on the microSD
card before it is overwritten?
At 1080p, 30FPS and the 64GB microSD card included with
AP1, the storage capacity is approximately 42 hours. The SD
Card Storage Calculator can help you determine capacity.
34. Can I get in-cab notifications?
Yes.
35. How do I download the AP1 app?
Visit iOS App Store or Google Play Store and search for
“SmartWitness AP1,” or visit the AP1 Setup page for links
to download the app.
36. What’s the use case for the AP1?
The use case is a commercial vehicle that requires a
road-facing, commercial-grade, low-cost, self-installable,
connected dash camera that provides telematics data and
the most critical ADAS functionality.

6SMARTWITNESS AP1 FAQs
AP1
FAQs
38. Is there a price option to use the camera without
ADAS — as only a forward-facing camera — so we can
start using the AP1 now and upsell ADAS in the future?
The price for the camera is the same with or without ADAS
capabilities. By default, ADAS is not enabled. If fleet users
purchase the AP1 without ADAS and decide to upgrade
later, there’s no additional cost to the TSP, which provides
partners an additional source of revenue if desired.
39. On what carriers is the AP1 certified? Will it work
on others?
The AP1 is certified on AT&T and will also work on T-Mobile.
40. Does the AP1 support JBUS applications, or is it
OBD only?
At launch, the AP1 supports only OBDII. An OTA update with
support for the J1939 protocol will be available in late 2021.
41. Does the AP1 need to get data from the
OBD/JBUS for ADAS functions to work?
If the AP1 is unable to receive data from the OBDII or
JBUS, most ADAS functions will continue to work as
expected. However, since speed data will not come from
the vehicle, the AP1 device will default to GPS for speed
data. The potential 1- to 1.5-second lag in the data could
be problematic in the event of a driver warning. Using the
AP1 when there is no OBDII or JBUS data and the driver
is dependent on audible ADAS event warnings from the
device is not recommended.
