Deployment Considerations
ThefollowingradiationrelatedconsiderationsmustbeexaminedbeforedeployingatypicalSNOM
M700System.Theseincludes(butnotlimitedto):
BuildingPenetration:
Whenasignalstrikesabuildingitisdiffractedorabsorbed;thereforetosomeextendthesignalis
reduced.Theamountofabsorptionisdependentofthekindofbuildinganditsenvironment,the
amountofsolidstructure.Thisisanimportantconsiderationincoverageplanning.
Note: Thestructureofthebuildingwillhaveanimpactofcoveragerange.
InterferenceSources:
Signalsfromreceivingantennasareweakenedbyinterferencefromothersignals.Thesesignalsmay
befromthesamenetworkorotherobjects.AwellplannedDECTmulticellinstallationshouldidentify
potentialinterferencesourcesforoptimalplacementofBasestationsandrepeaters.
Note:OtherDECTsystemsordevicestransmittinginsimilarfrequencies,weakensreception.
Thereforeitisrecommendedtosetupbasestationssufficientlyclosetoeachother.
Radio/CellRange:
Thesuggesteddistancebetweentwobasestationsdependsonthephysicalpathbetweenthebase
stations.Ifthepathlossislessened,e.g.byminimizingamountofwalls/obstaclesinthepath,then
signalsfrombasestationswillcovermoredistance.Inatypicalofficebuildingthesuggesteddistance
betweentwobasestationsis20‐40m.

basestations.

Capacity Planning
Eachbasestationhasamaximumlimitofparallelcalls.
ToavoidinsufficientuserexperiencethroughcongestedDECTnetwork,thecapacityfortheDECT
networkshouldbeplannedinadvance.
Duetodifferentusagepatterns,thenumberofbasestationrequiredtofulfilthedemandofvoice
channelsmayvary.
Thetotalcapacityinthecoverageareaofabasestationisalwayslimitedtothecapacityofasingle
basestation.
Site Planning / Cell Coverage
Theactualcellcoverageandqualityinaninstallationcanbedeterminedwithaspecialhandset
feature,inwhichthehandsetestablishesanaudioloop.
Snomurgentlyrecommendsto
Note:Thisfeaturecanbeusedwithbasestationsinaninfrastructure,butalsowithsingle
basestationswithoutEthernetconnection,sothefeatureallowstoidentifyobstacles
anddifficultiesinaninstallation.
1. Using the Handset for reception measurement
Beforestartingthedeploymentmeasuringmakesurethehandsetisproperlycharged.Identifythe
MACaddressofthebasestationtowhichyouwanttomeasure.AswellmanuallyreadtheMAC
addressonthebasestationlabelsonthebacksideforthedevicetobeusedwiththehandset.The
handsetdoesnotneedtobe(pre‐)registeredtoaparticularbase.

Note:ByplugginginaheadsetmodifiedforaMP3playerconnectionaudiofromthe
handset/MP3playerwillbeloopedbacktothehandsetearpiece.Thismakesitpossible
tolistentoaudioatthesametimeasreadingtheRSSIlevelsofthedisplay.
Snomrecommendsusingabuildingplanandcheckingthebasestationcoverageusingthehandset
signalstrengthindicationRSSIlevelfromeachbasestation.
2. Placing 2nd and following base station
Inordertoplacethe2ndbasestation:
Placethe1stSNOMM700basestationexactatthedesiredposition,andpoweronthebase
Setupthehandsetasdescribedinprevioussection.
UsethebuildingplandrawingandcheckthebasestationcoverageusingthehandsetRSSI
levels.Markuptheacceptablespotsandnon‐acceptablespotsforplacingthe2ndbasestation
ontheplandrawing.AcceptablespotsarespotswherethehandsetshowsRSSIlevelsbetter
than075dBm(meaninglowernumericnumber)andwhereyouverifiedviaaudioloopback
thatthereceptionisclear.
ItisrecommendedtohaveaRSSIvaluebetterthan/equalto‐75dBm,andneverbelow‐90dBm.:
Lowernumericnumberthan075dBmonthehandsetscreen.Pleasenotethattheminusisnot
shownonthescreen.
Typically,installationssuchasofficebuildings,warehousesandhospitalityshouldbeequippedwith
bothbasestationsandrepeatersonseveralfloorstocreateuniformandcompleteradiocoverage.
Donotlinktwoormoremulticellbasestationviaarepeater.Arepeatershallbeonlyusedtoextend
thecoverageofasinglebasestation.IfEthernetisavailableitisrecommendedtouseamulticell
stationratherthanarepeater.
Openareascanbecoveredwithasparsenetworkofbasestations.Insuchapplications,thebase
stationsand/orrepeaterscoveranextendedrangeduetotheextendedline‐of‐sightradiopropagation
capability.

IP configuration
ThesnomM700canoperateusingavarietyoftheIPnetworksettings,allowingittobeconfiguredfor
differentnetworks.
ThebasestationcanbeconfiguredforeitherdynamicIP‐addressretrievalusingDHCPorsetupfor
usageofafixedIP‐address.Bydefaultdynamicconfigurationisconfigured.
ThebasestationcanalsobeconfiguredforusageofavirtualLAN(VLAN),whichistherecommended
configuration,asadedicatedVLANforvoicetrafficinacorporatenetworkcanprovidethemost
optimalQualityofService(QoS).NoVLANtagisenabledasdefault.TheVLANcanbeconfigured
duringbootupviaDHCPOption132(VLANID)andOption133(VLANQoS).
DedicatedQoSsettingsintheIPpacketsforsupportofDiffServ,ToSandcanbeenabledusingthebase
stationconfigurationpageorsnomprovisioning.
ThecommunicationbetweenthebasestationsiseitherIPMulticastorPeer‐To‐Peercommunication.
IPMulticastisthepreferredoptionasitgeneratestheleasttraffic,butitrequireseitherasingleIP
subnetorIP‐Multicastpass‐throughinthenetworkswitches.
M700/M5 Repeater Placement Recommendations
Theantennasinthebasestationsareclosetoomnidirectional;therebythereisnoneedtoconsider
howthebasestationsfaceeachotherwhendeployingthem.
Thesearesomerecommendationsforplacementstrategies:
AroundCorridors:
Basestations/repeatershouldbedeployedverticallypreferablyatcorridorintersectionswhere
propagationpatternsfollowthecorridorpatterns.Incasetherearehighobjectsinthearea,thebase
station/repeatershouldbeinstalledabovethoseobjects.
Multi‐StoryBuildings:
Basestationsandrepeaterscanbeinstalledonoppositesidesofthefloorstotakeadvantageofthe
floor‐to‐floorcoverage.Thecoveragedesigncannotrelyentirelyonfloor‐to‐floorpropagation;each
casemustbeverifiedduetovariationsinlocalattenuationpatterns.
LargeHalls:
Basestationsandrepeaterscanbedeployedinlargehallsthatcontainacentralopenspaceareawith
windowstotheotherareas.Thisprovidesagoodcoveragefortheroomsintheinnercircleonall
floors.Inlargehalls,basestations/repeatershouldbeinstalledverticallyinthemiddleofthespace
belowtheceiling.
MountingPositions:
WhenBasestationsandrepeateraremountedverticallyonawall,theradiocoverageinfrontofthese
devicesistwiceaslargeasthecoverageattherear.Thebasestationsshouldalwaysbemounted
higherthattheobstructiveobjectsinthearea–e.g.minimumhigherthan2mabovefloor.
Repeatersshouldbeinstalledinthemiddleofcorridorsandsmallrooms.

Basestationsandrepeatersshouldnotbedeployednearlargemetallicobjects.Thisincludesmetallic
inshelvesinwarehouses.
ReinforcedConcreteStructures:
Thesestructuresreducesignalstrengthdramaticallyinsidethebuilding.Theyreducetheradio
coveragerangeoftheBasestationsandrepeatersandthereforerequireahighernumberofbase
stationsorrepeatersinthebuilding.Lightertypesofconstructionmaterialsrequirefewerbase
stationssinceattenuationfiguresareconsiderablylower.

TheM700systemisaverypowerfulDECTsystem.Comparedtomostcompetitorsitdoesnotrequire
specialcontrollersorlicensesforbuildingyourDECTnetwork.Aninstallationcanbeextendedwith
additionalM700basestations.
Duetothehighlyintegratedsystemandthe“sharing”ofresourcestherearesomelimitationsand
thingstoconsiderwhileplanningorextendinganexistinginstallation:
Onebasestationwillbecomethemasterbasestation,whichwill“organize”theinstallation
andsynchronizetheotherbasestations(slavebasestations)withthenetworktopology.
Outgoingfromthe“masterbasestation”,amaximumof6additionalbasestationslevelscan
beinstalled.Thismeansamaximumof7levelsofbasestationsinaline(row)includingthe
master.
Themaximumamountofusers/handsets/SIP‐registrationsis200.
Eachbasestationcanholdamaximumof30users,soyouneedatleast7basestationsto
achievethemaximumamountofusers(butmorethan7won’tallowmorethan200users).
Eachbasestationallowstohave8narrowbandcallsinparallel

TodeployamulticellDECTnetwork,therearesomerequirementstofollowandsomelimitations.
AmulticellDECTnetworkisbasedonamaster/slavearchitecture.Themasterbasestationwillensure
thatalltheslavereceivethenetworklayout.Thismeanstheslavecellsare“synchronized”andare
“aware”ofeachothertoallowseamlesshandoverforusershandsets.
Amaximumof7synclevelsaresupported,thatmeansstartingfromthesyncMaster(Level1),youcan
deployandcascadeupto6additionalbasestations(slaves)outgoingfromthemaster.Thismeans,if
youwanttocoveralongcorridor,youshouldsetupthemasterbasestationinthemiddle,thisallows
thelevelstobeinbothdirections.
