Purpose of this manual This manual is the maintenance manual of HD Electronic Viewfinder HDVF-C35W.
This manual describes the information items on maintenance, and items that
premise the service based on the components parts such as service overview, setting
menu, electrical alignment, spare parts, semiconductor pin assignments, block
diagrams, schematic diagrams and board layouts, assuming use of system and
service engineers.

1-1. Board Location
n
.The IF-1070 board is secured to the LCD module with
the screw.
.The IF-1070 board is not the service parts. When the
replacement is required, replace the LCD module.
1-2. Circuit Description
1-2-1. PR-308 Board
The PR-308 board consists of an analog signal low-pass
filter, CPU, LED driver, and FPGA flash memory.
Analog signal low-pass filter
The analog HD YPbPr signal input from a VF cable is
limited in band using a low-pass filter and supplied to the
AD converter (IC1) on the PR-309 board. An analog HD
Y signal is sync-separated using IC6, and H and V sync
signals are supplied to the FPGA (IC100) on the PR-309
board.
CPU (IC400)
CPU processes volume and switch inputs and controls a
PR-309 board device and LCD module through I2C and
SPI buses.
LED driver (IC600)
The LED driver turns on and off an indicator so as to
correspond to the brightness set in a menu, according to the
LED indicator ON/OFF signals of the R-Tally and G-Tally
ON/OFF signals and I2C signal sent through a VF cable.
FPGA flash memory (IC411)
The FPGA flash memory stores the data for FPGA (IC100)
on the PR-309 board.
1-2-2. PR-309 Board
The PR-309 board consists of an AD converter, FPGA,
image processing block, and clock generator.
AD converter (IC1: I2C control)
The analog HD YPbPr signal supplied from the PR-308
board is digitally converted by ten bits and supplied to
FPGA (IC100).

1-2-5. LE-341 Board
Green-Tally LED, Red-Tally LED, and Battery LED
indicators are controlled by CPU (IC400) on the PR-308
board so that they light.
1-2-6. LE-342 Board
Non-Standard LED, MAG LED, Red-Tally LED, Extend
LED, and SAVE LED indicators are controlled by CPU
(IC400) on the PR-308 board so that they light. A VF
cylindrical block is detected for existence using a micro-
switch, and the resultant information is sent to CPU
(IC400) on the PR-308 board.
FPGA (IC100: SPI bus control)
A gray scale signal is inserted into the digital YPbPr signal
input from an AD converter (IC1) according to the menu
setting and supplied to an image processing circuit
(IC200). The format of an input signal is discriminated
using the H and V sync signals input from the PR-308
board. Detail processing, knee processing, and LCD
interface processing are performed for the digital RGB
signal input from an image processing circuit (IC200), and
the resultant signal is output to an LCD module. FPGA
generates a clock for CPU and a reference clock for a clock
generator. It also sends and receives the I2C signal sent
through a VF cable.
Image processing block (IC200: SPI bus control)
The digital YPbPr signal input from FPGA (IC100) is
scaled, bright-controlled, and converted from YUV to
RGB.
Clock generator (IC101: I2C control)
The clock generator generates a clock for an image
processing circuit (IC200) and a clock for an LCD module.
1-2-3. RE-249 Board
In a two-channel regulator circuit, five types of power
supplies below are generated from the UNREG power
supplied from a VF cable and sent to each board through a
connector (CN1).
.+5.0 V: Used for LCD backlight and LED lighting.
.+3.3 V, +1.8 V, and +1.5 V:
Used for an LCD drive circuit, analog circuit,
and digital processing circuit.
.+3.3 V: Used for an analog circuit.
The ON/OFF information on the “DISPLAY”, “ZEBRA”,
and “TALLY” switches on the front panel and the
“MENU” and “ENTER” switches at the bottom is sent to
CPU (IC400) on the PR-308 board.
1-2-4. SW-1366 Board
“PEAKING”, “CONTRAST”, and “BRIGHT” volume
values, and “ASSIGN.1” and “ASSIGN.2” switch ON/
OFF signals are sent through the RE-249 board to CPU
(IC400) on the RP-308 board.

1-5. Replacing the Main Parts
1-5-1. Replacing the LCD Module

When replacing the LCD module, perform the adjustment
of Section 3.
1. Release the hook, then rotate the elbow assembly in
the direction of the arrow 1.
2. Remove the elbow assembly in the direction of the
arrow 2.
3. Remove the three screws, then remove the stopper.
4. Open LCD in the direction of the arrow.
5. Remove the four screws (B2 x5), then remove the
rotation base cover.
6. Remove the four screws (B2.6 x8), then remove the
rear chassis assembly.
7. Disconnect the harness from the connector (CN1) on
the LE-341 board.
8. Remove the four screws, then remove the ground
terminal and LCD module.
9. Disconnect the harness from the connector (CN1) on
the LE-342 board.
10. Disconnect the harness from the connector (CN102)
on the LCD module.

11. Remove the spacer sheet from the LCD module.
12. Attach the LCD module in the reverse order of steps 1
to 11.

When attaching the LCD module, be careful to prevent
the panel display from getting dust, scratch or
contamination.
1-5-2. How to Measure Luminance
Required equipment

must have already been calibrated before)
Procedure
1. Remove the elbow assenbly.
(Refer to steps 1 and 2 of Section 1-5-1.)
2. Attach the front chassis of the HDVF-C35W in the
camera.
3. Rotate the BRIGHT knob and CONTR knob fully
clockwise (MAX) beforehand.
4. Perform the setting as follows in the “S05 TEST
SIGNAL”menu of the service menu and display 100%
white signal. (Refer to Section 2-4.)

5. Measure luminance from the front of the LCD panel of
the HDVF-C35W.

1-5-3. Procedure Required When Replacing
the PR-308 Board and IC406
When replacing the PR-308 board and IC406 on the PR-
308 board, perform the adjustment of Section 3.
1-5-4. Connecting Cord (VF) Extension
Method
The connecting cord (VF) of this unit can be extended by
replacing with the following parts.
.1-827-086-2X (500 mm)
.1-827-086-3X (1000 mm)
When replacing, perform the following procedure.
1. Remove the cable retaining plate (A), cable retaining
plate (B) and drip-proof cushion from the connecting
cord (VF).

1-6-2. Procedure for Extending the RE-249
Board
1. Remove the elbow assembly.
(Refer to steps 1 and 2 of Section 1-5-1.)
2. Remove the five screws (B2.6 x8), then remove the
upper case assembly.
3. Remove the four screws (B2 x4), then remove the
PR-309 board.
4. Remove the screw (B2.6 x5), then remove the ground
terminal.
5. Remove the harness guide, then remove the LCD
assembly.
6. Remove the three screws (B2 x4) and ground
terminal, then remove the PR-308 board.
7. Remove the connecting cord (VF) from the lower case
assembly.

Version
1. Display the TOP menu. (Refer to Section 2-2.)
2. Display the “08 VERSION”screen in the SERVICE
menu. (Refer to Section 2-4.)
3. Check the ROM version.
8. Attach the PR-RE extension assembly (on the EX-
1090 board side) to the connector (CN1) on the RE-
249 board.
9. Attach the PR-RE extension assembly (on the EX-
1091 board side) to the connector (CN2) on the PR-
308 board.
10. Secure the ground terminals removed in steps 4 and 6
to the lower case assembly with the screw.

1-7-2. Writing and Rewriting PLD Internal
Data
The device is equipped with a PLD (Programmable Logic
Device) that can be written and rewritten using the e-
Production (EPR) method.
When replacing the following parts or upgrading the PLD
version, contact your local Sony Sales Office/Service
Center.

The part number of the PLD (or the ROM for the PLD)
noted in “Spare Parts”is for a part with no data written.
When you need to replace any part, write data using the
steps on the next page.
For a PLD that has a program operating on the externally
connected ROM, when a part in the PLD is defective, if
you replace only the defective part, you do not have to
rewrite the data.
About e-Production
.When writing or rewriting the PLD internal data,
1. Standard tools (cables) can be used.
2. Standard software (PLD Download Tool) can be
used.
.The PLD internal data is managed on the Sony database
server as a Project file (E_xxx_xxx_xx_xx).
.The standard connector (EPR connector) for writing
PLD internal data on the board is equipped. “EPR”is
displayed on the board.

Operation procedure
The procedure to write data to the PLD (or the ROM for
the PLD) is outlined below.
For details on these steps, refer to “Download Tool
Operation Manual (Device Writing Volume)”.
“Download Tool Operation Manual (Device Writing
Volume)”can be obtained on the same Web site where the
PLD Download Tool software is downloaded.
Step 1. Prepare the Project file.

Download the Project file from the Sony database
server.
Step 2. With the power of the device turned off, connect
the parallel port on the PC and the EPR connector
on the target board with the PLD download tool
(cable).
Step 3. Turn on the power of the device.
Launch the PLD Download Tool software, and
import the Project file.
Step 4. Program the PLD (or the ROM for the PLD) by
using the PLD Download Tool software.
Step 5. When the programming completes correctly
(without an error message), restart the device.

1-10. Unleaded Solder
Boards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with a
lead free mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead.
(Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come
printed with the lead free mark due to their particular size.)

.Be sure to use the unleaded solder for the printed circuit
board printed with the lead free mark.
.The unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40 dC
higher than the ordinary solder, therefore, it is recom-
mended to use the soldering iron having a temperature
regulator.
.The ordinary soldering iron can be used but the iron tip
has to be applied to the solder joint for a slightly longer
time. The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away if
the heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful.
1-8. Recommended Replacement Parts
The following listed parts are recommended for replace-
ment. Check the parts for deformation or deterioration
from time to time and replace them as necessitated.

1-9. How to Use Viewfinder Lens
If the lens other than the supplied (preinstalled) view-
finder lens or the optional viewfinder lens unit is used,
the sunlight may cause LCD burnout.
The viewfinder lens has taken special measures to prevent
LCD burnout.
LCD burnout due to the condensed sunlight caused by the
use of other viewfinder lens is not covered by the warranty.

Basic operations
1. Enter the menu.
Push the MENU switch.
A menu page appears in the viewfinder display.
The viewfinder menu can be displayed even while a
picture from the camera is being displayed. The
camera picture or menu darkens so that it appears
dimly behind the menu.
2. Select a menu page.
(1) While the ? mark appears to the left of the page
number (page select mode), push the ASSIGN 1
or ASSIGN 2 switch.
The menu changes to another page.

(2) When the desired menu page appears, push the
ENTER switch.
The →mark appears to the left of a menu item on
the selected menu page (item select mode).

.To select another menu page, push the MENU
switch to return to the page select mode.
.If the mark appears to the left of a menu item and
the ? mark appears to the left of the setting (value
setting mode), push the MENU switch to return to
item select mode. Push the MENU switch again to
return to page select mode.

5. Enter the setting.
Push the ENTER switch.
The setting is entered and the menu returns to item
select mode.
If you push the ENTER switch before pushing the MENU
switch, the setting returns to the value that was previously
set and then the menu returns to item select mode.
6. Set other menu items.
Repeat steps 2 to 5 to set other menu items.
7. End menu operations.
Push the MENU switch repeatedly until the menu page
disappears from the display.
To restore a setting to its initial value
Move the →mark to the menu item to be restored, and
then push the ASSIGN 1 and ASSIGN 2 switches at the
same time while the ? mark is positioned to the left of the
setting (value setting mode).
2-2. TOP Menu
The TOP menu displays all of the menu items.
Displaying the TOP Menu
1. Set the control knob on the front to the following settings.
(1) BRIGHT knob: 99 (Turned fully clockwise)
(2) CONTRAST knob: _99 (Turned fully counter-
clockwise)
(3) PEAKING knob: 100 (Turned fully clockwise)
2. Press the ENTER switch while holding down the
MENU switch.
The TOP menu is displayed.

Menu items Contents
OPERATION Contains the setting items required when the
camera operator is using the device.
SERVICE Contains items required for maintaining the
View Finder, such as electrical alignment,
HOURS METER, and self-diagnosis function.
3. Select menu items.
(1) With the →mark is positioned to the left of a
menu item on the selected menu page (item
select mode), push the ASSIGN 1 or ASSIGN 2
switch to move the →mark to the desired menu
item.
To move the →mark upward, push the ASSIGN
1 switch. To move the →mark downward, push
the ASSIGN 2 switch.

(2) Position the →mark to the left of the desired
menu item, and then push the ENTER switch.
The →mark to the left of the selected menu item
changes to the mark, and the mark to the
left of the setting changes to the ? mark. The
menu is replaced by setting screen (value setting
mode).

To select another menu item, push the MENU switch
to return to item select mode.
4. Change the value of a setting.
With the ? mark positioned to the left of the setting
(value setting mode), push the ENTER switch to
change the value.
If the setting is a numerical value, push the ASSIGN
1 switch to increase the value, and push the ASSIGN
2 switch to decrease the value.
Keep pushing the switch to change the value rapidly.

2-3. OPERATION Menu
The OPERATION menu contains the setting items required when the camera operator is using the device.
For more information, refer to the operation manual that comes with this device.

peaking signal to the B ch.
CRUMPLE 0 to [1] to 3 Sets the bit shift for crumpling
the peaking signal.
RGB MIX [R], G, B, CY, MG, YL, Sets the mix gain for R ch, G ch,
SKIN, SKY, FOIL, ORAN and B ch when mixing the
peaking signal to the main signal.
This setting is enabled only
when RGB is selected in
SOURCE.
CRISPENING [0] to 63 Sets the level for crispening the
