You will find information on using each lens in this manual. Precautions
common to lenses, such as notes on use will be found in "Precauti ons
before using" on a separate sheet. Be sure to read both documents before
using the lens.
This
manual is for use with several different lenses.
This lens is designed for
A-mount, which can be used on Sonr o. cameras.
This lens
\Vas developed jointly by Carl Zeiss and Sony Corpora ti on and
designed for Sony A-mount came ras. This lens is produced according to the
s
tr ict standards and quality assurance system of Carl Zeiss.
• The Planar
T* 8Smm Fl.4 ZA is used for illustrations in this book, unless
otherwise ment
io ned.
Notes on use
• When using this l en s with an E-mount camera, attach a separately sold Mount
Adaptor. Do not attach the lens directly to the E-mount camera or
you may
damage both.
• When you carry the camera with the lens attached, make sure to hold both the
camera and the lens steadily.
•
Do not hold by any part of the lens that protrudes when focusing.
Precautions for flash use
Wh en using a bu il t-in camera flash, make sure to remove the lens hood and
shoot from at least I m (3.3 feet) away from your subject. With certa in of
lens/flash combinations, lhe lens may partially block the light of the flash,
result
in g in a shadow at the bottom of the pic tur e.
Vignetting
\Vhen you use lens, the corners of the sc reen become darker than the cent er .
To reduce this phenomena {called vignetting), close the aperture by I to 2
sl
ops .

1 Remove the rear and front lens ca psand the camera body cap.
• You can attach/detach the lens front cap in two ways, {I) and (2). When
you attach/detach th e lens cap with the lens hood attached, use method (2).
2 Align the orange ind ex on the lensbarrel with the orange index
on the camera ( mounting ind ex), then insert the lens into the
camera
mount and rotate it clockwise until it loc ks.
• Do not press the lens re lease button on the camera when mounting the lens.
• Do not mount the lens at an angle.
To remove the lens (See illustration 6)-[gj.)
While pr ess ing and holding th e le ns release button on the ca mera,
rotate the lens counterclockwise until it s top s, then detach the len s.

E!J Attaching lens hood
It is recommended that you usc a lens h ood to r educe flare and ensu re
maximum image quality.
Fit the lens hood into the mount on the end of th e l ens barrel a nd
rotate the lenshood clockwise until it clicks.
• 'When storing, turn over the lens hood and place it onto the lens backwards.
I!] Focusing
\\the n using the auto focus, the came ra focuses the lens automatically.
•
Even when th e auto focus is set, the focusing ring may rotate ifyou move it
unintentionally. Only rotate the focusing ring manually when the camera is
set to the direct manual focus, otherwise a malfunction may resul t. (Some
cameras
do not have the direct manual focus function. If your camera has this
fwJCtion, this restriction
is explained in the section on focusing, in your camera's
instruction manua
l. )
When focusing manually, set your cam era to the manual focus and rotate the
focusing
ring wh il e looking through the viewfinder, etc.
Shooting at infinity in MF(SonnarT* 13Smm F1.8ZA only)
The focusing ring can be rotated sl ightly past the infinity to provide accurate
focusing under various operating t empera tures. Do not rotate the focusing
ring all the way to the
end when focusing manually even at infinity. Look
through the viewfinder, etc., and se t the focus precisely.
Focus-hold button (See illustration I!J-[gj.)
While the focus-hold button is pressed, auto focus functi on is suspended and
the focus is fixed for shoo ting.
• The function
of the focus-hold button can be changed on cameras with custom
function capability. Refer to the camera manuals for details.
Depth-of-field scale
When focus is set on a subject, anyt hing at that same distance will appear
sharp, and anything within a certain range before and beyond the subject w ill
also appear in focus; this is called dept h of field. Depth of field depends on
the subject distance and aperture you choose a nd is indicated by the lines on
the depth-of- fie ld scale corresponding to the aperture.
• The depth-
of -field scale is for 3Smm-format cameras. The depth-of-field is
shallower when you use Interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras equipped with an
APS-C sized image sensor.

Notes on use
• Do not l eave the lens exposed to the sun or a bright light source. Internal
malfunction
of the ca mera body and l ens, or a fire may result due to the effect of
light f
oc using. If circumstances necessitate leaving the lens in sunlight, be sure to
attach the
le- ns caps.
• Be careful not to subject the

• Always p lace t he lens ca ps on the lens/teleconvertcr wh en sto rin g.
• Do not keep the lens/teleconverter in a very humid pl ace for a long period of
time to prevent mold.

camera, resulting
in operational malfunct io n.
Condensation
Ifyour lens is brought directly from a co ld pl ace to a warm place,
condensation may appear
on the len s. To avoid this, place the le ns in a plastic
bag
or something similar. When th e air temperature inside the bag reaches
the surrounding temperature, take the lens out.
Cleaning the fens
• Do not touch the su rfac e of the lens dir ec tly .
• Ifthe
le ns ge ts dirty, brush offdust with a le ns blower and wipe with a soft, clean
cloth
(C leani ng Cloth is recommended).
•
Do not use any organic so lv en t, such as thinner or benzine, to clean the lens or
the
ca mera cone.

) warrantsthis productagainstdefects in material or workmanship for the time periods
and as set forth below when purchased directly from Sony or a Sony Retailer. Pursuant to this Limited Warranty,
Sonywill, at its option, (i) repairthe product using new or refurbished parts or (ii) replace the product with a new or
refurbished product. For purposes of this Limited Warranty, II refurbished" means a product or part that has been
returned
to its original specifications. In the event of a defect,these are your exclusive remedies.
Term: For a period
of one (1) year from the original date of purchase of the product, Sonywill, at its option, repair or
replace with new or refurbished product or parts, any product or parts determined to be defective.
This Limited Warrantycovers onlythe hardwarecomponents packaged
with the Product. Itdoes notcovertechnical
assistance
for hardware or software usage and it does notcover any software products whether or notcontained in
the Product; anysuch software is provided liAS IS" unless expressly provided
for in any enclosed software Limited
Warranty. Please refertothe End User License Agreements includedwith the Product
for your rights and obligations
with respect to the software.
Instructions: To obtainwarrantyservice, you must deliverthe product,freightprepaid, in eitheritsoriginal packaging
or packaging affording an equal degree of protection to the Sony authorized service facility specified. It is your
responsibility to backup anydata, software or other materialsyou may havestored or preserved on your unit. It is
likely that such data, software, or other materials will be lost or reformatted during service and Sony will not be
responsible
for any such damage or loss. A dated purchase receipt from Sony or a Sony Retailer is required. For

Repair I Replacement Warranty: This Limited Warranty shall apply to any repair, replacement part or replacement
product
for the remainder of the original Limited Warranty period or for ninety (90) days, whichever is longer. Any
parts or product replaced underthis Limited Warranty will become the property of Sony.
This Limited Warranty
only covers product issues caused by defects in material or workmanship during ordinary
use; itdoes notcover product issues caused byanyother reason, including but not limited to product issues due to
acts of God, misuse, limitations of technology, or modification of or to any part of the Sony product or product
purchased
from other than Sony or a Sony Retailer. To determine if a retailer is part of the Sony Retailer Network,
please contact Sony's Customer Service Call Center
or go to www.sony.com/support. This Limited Warranty does
notcover Sony products sold AS IS or WITH ALL FAULTS or consumables (such as fuses or batteries). This Limited
Warranty is invalid
if the factory-applied serial number has been altered or removed from the product. This Limited
Warranty is valid
only in the United States.
LIMITATION ONDAMAGES: SONYSHALL NOT
BE LIABLE FOR ANYINCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIALDAMAGES
FOR BREACH OF ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY ON THIS PRODUCT.
DURATION OF IMPLIEDWARRANTIES: EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT PROHIBITED BYAPPLICABLE LAW, ANY IMPLIED
WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ON THIS PRODUCT IS LIMITED IN
DURATION TO THE DURATION OF THIS WARRANTY.
Some states
do notallowthe exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, or allow limitationson
how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. This Limited
Warranty gives you specific legal rights and you
may have other rights which vary from state to state.
