Purpose of this manual This manual is the installation manual of the Hard Disk Drive Upgrade Kit BKMA-
U70 for the Multi Access Video Audio Server MAV-70.
This manual is intended for use by trained system and service engineers, and
describes the information regarding installation.

1-1. Operating Precautions When Replacing the Hard Disk Drive
The Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are installed in the MAV-70. The HDD is a precision part. The causes such
as shock, vibration and static electricity to the unit, and the conditions of temperature and humidity may
damage HDD or its data.
Before installation, read fully the following cautions, and perform the installation with extra care.
Cautions about shock and vibration
When transporting and moving;
.Pack the unit using the packaging materials specified by the manufacturer.
.Use a proper cart.
.Avoid rough routes, and manage the cart gently.
When placing on a floor or table;
.Put a cushion on stable and horizontal place, and put the unit on it gently.
.Do not place the unit near vibrating equipments.
For the unit;
.Never hit the unit by tool, and drop the tool on the unit.
Take extra care;
.Never give vibration or shock to the unit while the power is turned on, or within about 30 seconds after
turning off the power.
.Be extremely careful when removing and/or installing the HDD unit or power supply unit while the unit
is in live state.
Cautions about rack mounting the unit
.Mount in the rack after removing the built-in HDD from the unit.
.Never give shock to all the rack mounted unit which has a HDD.
Caution about static electricity
.Keep static-producing items such as plastics (air caps or others) away from the working area.
.When touching the HDD unit, be sure to wear a grounded earth-band to protect against static electricity.
Cautions about temperature and humidity
.Temperature and humidity of storage and operating condition must be kept within the correct specified
range.
.Never turn on the power with the cabinet is removed in consideration of the air-cooling effect.
Cautions when an error appears in a HDD
.Treat this unit conform to the above cautions, even when an error appeared.
.Keep the unit in the condition in which the error appeared, and record the details of the error.

Prolonging Life of Hard Disk Drive
The life of the hard disk drive (HDD) is shortened by vibration, shock,
temperature, humidity and static electricity.
To prolong the life of the hard disk drive, observe the following precautions. Read these
precautions before
using the hard disk
drive!
Static Electricity
Static electricity can reach up to several kilo volts and instantaneously
damage the HDD board.
.Be sure to touch the metal rack or similar earthed part
before touching the HDD in order to discharge the static
electricity of your body. We recommend wearing an earthed
wrist-band.
Vibration, Shock
Excessive vibration and shock to the HDD can damage the internal
heads and media.
In some cases, it may take several months for the heads and media to
become damaged after the vibration or shock is applied.
.Take great care not to drop the product or HDD assembly, and to
avoid collision when handling the product and HDD.
.The HDD is at greatest risk of damage when the power is
turned on, and for thirty seconds after the power is
turned off. Never move, transport or tap the product
during these times.
.Be sure to pack the product and the HDD assembly in the
packaging materials specified by the manufacturer or in a
carrying case that protects the HDD from shock and vibration
when transporting the HDD assembly or the product.
Temperature, Humidity
Use of the HDD in an environmental temperature exceeding the product
specification will accelerate wear of the parts and components of the HDD.
A sharp change of environmental temperature and humidity can cause
troubles inside the HDD such as condensation, even if the environ-
mental temperature and humidity are within the product specifica-
tions.
.The HDD starts up automatically when the main power of the
product is turned on. Always operate the HDD under the
specified environmental temperature and humidity once
the main power is turned on.
.When the HDD is moved into a warm indoor room from the cold
outdoors, the HDD assembly should be left for three hours
or more without removal from the packaging materials or
carrying case.

MAV-70XGI.

Checking Version
Before upgrading the system using the BKMA-U70, check that the versions of the respective option
boards that are installed in the MAV-70 are all version 2.50 or higher.

When capacity of a HDD is 36 GB, check the version number following the description shown in the
Installation Manual of the BKMA-U70XGI. When capacity of a HDD is 73 GB or larger and when only
upgrade of the HDD is to be executed, follow the steps shown in this section.

(TeraTermPro is contained in the CD-ROM that is supplied with the HDD having capacity of 73 GB or
larger.)
.Personal computer (Windows95/98/2000/NT4.0)
.RS-232C cross cable
.TeraTermPro (Version 2.3)
2-2. Checking Version
1. Remove the ornamental panel (A) from the MAV-70XGI.
(Refer to Section 2-2-1 of the Maintenance Manual.)
2. Set the switch S3 on the front panel of the MAV-70XGI to INT.
3. Connect the MAV-70XGI to a personal computer with the RS-232C cross cable.

4. Turn on the main power of the MAV-70XGI.
5. Start up TeraTermPro (version 2.3).
6. The Tera Term New connection display appears. Click “serial” and press the [OK] button.
7. Select the respective boards as listed below from the menu of the MAV-70 using Service/Execute/
Boards/EXT232C.
Type VER in capital letters and press the [Enter] key. Version number of the selected circuit
board is displayed.

.When capacity of a HDD is 73 GB or larger, refer to the CD-ROM supplied with the HDD regarding
the specification of the latest version.
.If the version numbers of the respective circuit boards are earlier than those listed above, the circuit
boards must be upgraded of their versions. Contact your local Sony Sales Office/Service Center for the
latest versions.
.When any circuit board is upgraded of its version, be sure to re-start the MAV-70XGI.

When capacity of a HDD is 73 GB or larger, refer to the CD-ROM supplied with the HDD for the
procedure how to upgrade the versions to the latest ones.

.When capacity of the HDD is increased by installing the
BKMA-U70, the “ALL ERASE” menu needs to be
executed after replacement of the hard disk. As the pre-
recorded materials are all erased, recording of all the
materials again is requested.
.In case that the MAV-70 is controlled by an application
software.
When the logical formatting is completed, implement the
operational processes that are required as the result
erasing the materials in the MAV-70, in the application
software side too.
.All of the work procedures to increase the capacity of the
HDD by installing the BKMA-U70 must be executed
while the system power is kept turned off.

Removal Procedures
1. Turn off the power switch. Wait until 30 seconds is
passed.
2. Remove the front panel (lower). (Refer to Section 2-2-
1 of the MAV-70 Maintenance Manual Volume1.)
3. Remove the HDD unit gently while pressing the levers
in the direction of the arrows.

Place the removed HDD unit on the cushion with the
warranty label side down.

Installation Procedure
1. Insert a new HDD unit into the slot gently, and press
the levers in the direction of the arrows to lock the
HDD unit.
2. Attach the HDD No. label which has same number as
removed HDD to the front of the new HDD unit.

3. Attach the HDD identification label.
4. Install the front panel (lower). (Refer to Section 2-2-1
of the MAV-70 Maintenance Manual Volume1.)
5. Turn on the power switch.

How to Execute Logical Formatting of HDD by the
MAV-70 itself
Keys to be used for menu operations
Use the following five keys located to the LCD display.
The key(s) for use in the next operation will light.
Basic layout of the displays
1Function menu block
Lists displays and functions that can be selected in a menu
format.
Up to 4 items can be displayed at a time. If the menu
contains more than 5 items, you can scroll the display with
the 0key.
<Operation>
1. Place the function cursor (>) at the desired item by
moving it up or down with the 9or 0key.
2. Press the [ENTER] key for an item to select a
display. The corresponding display appears.
For an item for mode/parameter setting, select the
desired mode or value with the 7 or 8 key.

When you press the [ENTER] key for some items, a
“Caution”display may appear, showing a message to
confirm your selection and “Cancel”and “Execute”in the
function menu.
To continue, place the function cursor (>) at “Execute”and
press the [ENTER] key again.
For the confirmation messages, see “Messages”on page
17(E) of the MAV-70 Operation Manual.

Shows the title of the current display.
The object name (board slot ID or drive ID) selected in the
object name block and its status may also be displayed.

Shows board slot IDs or drive IDs.
<Operation>
Move the object cursor (↓) to the left or right with the 7
or 8 key to select the destination board or drive for
parameter setting or data indication.
4Object status block
Shows the statuses of the boards or drives being displayed
in the object name block.
Logical Format Display
When you select “L Fmt”from the Function menu of the
“Service Menu display”, the “Logical Format display”
appears.
Perform logical format of the file system on the single unit
or the master unit.
Function menu
Exit : Restores the “Service Menu display”.
Execute : Selects the “File System Select display”.
Object names
Enclosure IDs and connection statuses.
The number of this unit is marked with asterisks (*).
An asterisk is displayed in place of a number for the unit
not being recognized.
Object statuses
Registration statuses.

Cancel : Restores the “Logical Format display”.
MAV-70 : Executes logical format of the file system with the MAV-70 file format.
MAV-70XGI : Executes logical format of the file system with the MAV-70XGI file format.
If capacity is insufficient with the MAV-70XGI file format, perform this formatting.

.When recording by setting the bit rate to 25 Mbps or more, select “MAV-70XGI.”
[When 36 GB HDD is used]
When you select “MAV-70XGI,”the maximum number of units that can be connected in a capacity
expansion system is 4.
When you select “MAV-70,”the maximum number of units that can be connected in a capacity
expansion system is 2.
[When 73 GB HDD is used]
When "MAV-70XGI (72G)" is selected, the number of hard disks that can be connected by the capacity
expansion is 4 units of HDD at a maximum.
When "MAV-70XGI (144G)" is selected, the number of hard disks that can be connected by the
capacity expansion is 8 units of HDD at a maximum. However, the video bit rate shall be 15 Mbps or
higher.
.In case that the MAV-70 is controlled by an application software.
When the logical formatting is completed, implement the operational processes that are required as the
result erasing the materials in the MAV-70, in the application software side too.

Perform recording and playback to confirm that there is no abnormality.

1. Remove the front panel cover (upper) of the MAV-70.
2. Set the switch S3 on the front panel of the MAV-70 to the INT position.
3. Connect the RS-232C of the PC to the EXT232C on the front panel of the MAV-70 with an RS-232C
cable.

4. Start up TeraTerm and select “serial”.
Setup/Serial port:

* : Needs to be changed depending on Personal Computer.
5. Select “Service/Execute/Boards/EXT232C Select Slot8 PU”from the menu display.
6. Check to see that “HDD CAPACITY: 0036.4 GB (36 GB HDD), 0072.8 GB (73 GB HDD)”appears
on the display.

For the HDD CAPACITY indication for 146 GB or larger, refer to the CD-ROM supplied with this
kit.

The HDD capacity can be checked by the following procedure.
For the HDD having capacity of 146 GB or larger, refer to the CD-ROM supplied with the HDD.
.Select “Service/Execute/Boards/EXT232C Select Slot7 SY FSE”from the menu display.
.Input “el”and press the [Enter] key.
.Confirm that the Encl Size appears on the display is 00FFh for 36 GB, 01FEh for 73 GB, and 03F7h or
a value close to it for 146 GB.
.The following examples show display (36 GB and 73 GB) for MAV-70XGI.
