Attention-when the product is installed in Rack:
1. Prevention against overloading of branch circuit
When this product is installed in a rack and is
supplied power from an outlet on the rack, please
make sure that the rack does not overload the supply
circuit.
2. Providing protective earth
When this product is installed in a rack and is
supplied power from an outlet on the rack, please
confirm that the outlet is provided with a suitable
protective earth connection.
3. Internal air ambient temperature of the rack
When this product is installed in a rack, please make
sure that the internal air ambient temperature of the
rack is within the specified limit of this product.
4. Prevention against achieving hazardous
condition due to uneven mechanical loading
When this product is installed in a rack, please
make sure that the rack does not achieve hazardous
condition due to uneven mechanical loading.
5. Install the equipment while taking the operating
temperature of the equipment into consideration
For the operating temperature of the equipment, refer
to the specifications of the Operation Manual.
6. When performing the installation, keep the fol-
lowing space away from walls in order to obtain
proper exhaust and radiation of heat.
Top: 4 cm (1.6 inches) or more
Right, Left: 4 cm (1.6 inches) or more
Rear: 10 cm (4 inches) or more

This label is located on the top cover of the drive unit.
When installing the installation space must be secured
in consideration of the ventilation and service operation.
.Do not block the ventilation slots at the inside of
handles on the BIN panels, and vents of the fans.
.Leave a space around the unit for ventilation.
.Leave more than 40 cm of space in the rear of the unit
to secure the operation area.
When the unit is installed on the desk or the like, leave
at least 4 cm of space in the left and right sides.
Leaving 40 cm or more of space above the unit is
recommended for service operation.

Manual Structure
Purpose of this manual
This manual is the installation manual of Professional Disc Library XDJ-1000 and
Professional Disc Drive XDBK-J102.
This manual is intended for use by trained system and service engineers,
and provides the information that is required to install (operating environment,
installation space, connection information, etc.).
For the installation of the Optional Power Supply XDBK-101, refer to the Installa-
tion Manual supplied with XDBK-101.

Installation
1-1. Overview of Installation
1-1-1. Cautions before Installation
The Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are installed in this unit. The HDD is a precision part. The causes such as
shock, vibration and static electricity to the unit, and the conditions of temperature and humidity may
damage HDD or its data.
Before installation, read fully the following cautions, and perform the installation with extra care.
Cautions about shock and vibration
When transporting and moving
.Pack the unit using the packaging materials specified by the manufacturer.
.Use a proper cart.
.Avoid rough routes, and manage the cart gently.
When placing on a floor or table
.Put the unit on stable and horizontal place.
.Do not place the unit near vibrating equipments.
For the unit
.Never hit the unit, and drop the tool on the unit.
Take extra care
.Never give vibration or shock to the unit while the power is turned on, or within about 30 seconds after
turning off the power.
Cautions about rack mounting the unit
.Never give shock to all the rack mounted unit which has a HDD.
Caution about static electricity
.Keep static-producing items such as plastics (air caps or others) away from the working area.
.When touching the HDD unit, be sure to wear a grounded earth-band to protect against static electricity.
Cautions about temperature and humidity
.Temperature and humidity of storage and operating condition must be kept within the correct specified
range.
.Never turn on the power with the cabinet is removed in consideration of the air-cooling effect.
Cautions when an error appears in a HDD
.Treat this unit conform to the above cautions, even when an error appeared.
.Keep the unit in the condition in which the error appeared, and record the details of the error.

1-3. Operating Conditions

Good air circulation is essential to prevent internal heat build-up. Place the unit in location with sufficient
air circulation.
Do not block the ventilation holes of the cabinet and the front and rear panels.
Operating temperature: 5 dC to 40 dC
Operating humidity: 20 % to 90 % (non-condensing)
Storage temperature: _20 dC to 60 dC
Locations to avoid:
.Areas where the unit will be exposed to direct sunlight or any other strong lights.
.Areas near heat sources.
.Dusty areas or areas subject to vibration.
.Areas with strong magnetic field.
.Areas with much electrical noise.
.Areas with much static electricity.
.Areas that is impossible to find a specified room for installation.

.Areas airtight.
Tilt allowance: Use this unit as horizontally as possible. (Within 2d)

1-4-1. Voltage and Power Requirements
This unit’s power line has a switching regulator.

Be sure to operate the unit within the range of following power voltage.
Power voltage: AC 100 to 240 V
Power frequency: 50 Hz or 60 Hz
Power consumption: Maximum 170 W
1-4-2. Recommended Power Cord
To get a power cord, please contact your local Sony Sales Office/Service Center.

.Use the approved Power Cord (3-core mains lead)/Appliance Connector/Plug with earthing-contacts
that conforms to the safety regulations of each country if applicable.
.Use the Power Cord (3-core mains lead)/Appliance Connector/Plug conforming to the proper ratings
(Voltage, Ampere).
.Never use an injured power cord.

1-5. Installation Space
When installing, the installation space must be secured in consideration of the ventilation and service operation.
.Do not block the fan exhaust areas rear panel and vents provided in the handle of the BIN panel.
.Leave a space around the unit for ventilation.
.Secure working spaces (at least 4 centimeters from the left panel and right panel and at least 10 centimeters from the rear
panel of the unit).
When the unit is installed on a flat surface such a desk, leave at least 4 centimeters of space in the left and right sides.
Leaving 40 centimeters or more of space above the unit is recommended for service operation.
Moreover, an air flow that is effective in cooling the unit is essential. If the ventilation is not enough, the unit may be dam-
aged because of an increase of the internal temperature.

4. Fix the drive mounting plate to the drive assembly with
thefour screws supplied with XDBK-J102.
5. Align the edge portions of the drive mounting plate
with the board supports and move it in the direction of
the arrow to the position where the power cable and
the SATA cable can be connected respectively.
6. Connect the power cable and the SATA cable, then fix
them with the clamp.
7. Push the drive mounting plate as far as it will go while
being careful not to pinch the cables.
8. Fix it with the four screws.

1. Remove the four screws, then pull out the drive mount-
ing plate.
2. Remove the two harnesses from the two clamps, then
remove the drive mounting plate.
3. Remove the two screws, then remove the blank panel.

1-7-2. Removal of BIN Tray Shipping Bracket
1. Remove the two screws (PSW3 x6) from the left side
of this unit.
2. Remove the top screw from the upper surface of this
unit.
3. Insert the screwdriver into the hole of the upper surface
of this unit and pull out the BIN tray while pushing the
screwdriver downward.
4. Attach the removed top screw to the original position.

.Do not turn on the power before removing the shipping
screws and shipping brackets.
.Before moving this unit, be sure to install shipping screws
and shipping brackets.

1. Remove the five carrier shipping screws from the right
side of this unit.
2. Attach the five screws removed in step 1 to the posi-
tion of the rear panel as shown in the illustration.

Remove the five screws attached to the rear panel in step 2,
then attach them to the right side of this unit in the order of
1to 3.

5. Remove the two screws, then remove the BIN shipping
bracket.
6. Push the BIN tray into this unit.
7. Fix the removed BIN shipping bracket to the position
of the rear panel with the two screws as shown in the
illustration.
8. Attach the two screws removed in step 1 to the posi-
tion of the rear panel as shown in the illustration.

1. Remove the two screws, then remove the BIN shipping
bracket.
2. Remove the two screws on the rear panel as shown in
the figure.

4. Insert the screwdriver into the hole of the upper surface
of this unit and pull out the BIN tray while pushing the
screwdriver downward.

with the two screws.

direction of the arrow (A).

1-8. Installing the RFID (Option)
To read or write the RFID tag attached to the BIN, install
the RFID (H) assembly to the unit.

Procedure
1. Remove the four screws, then remove the front top
panel.

2. Press the release lock portion to release the lock, then
draw the BIN tray (BIN mounting movable portion).

3. Install the two RFID (H) assemblies with the six screws.
4. Connect the harness of each RFID (H) assembly to the
connectors (CN2 and CN3) on the IF-1186 board.

Push the redundant portion of the harness into the
space between the RFID (H) assembly and the main
chassis to arrange the harness.

the steps 1 to 2.

1-9. Rack Mounting
Explains how to mount this unit into a 19-inch standard
rack.
Be sure to mount this unit into a rack accurately following
the procedure and notes mentioned below.

To prevent toppling over the rack, fix it on the horizontal
and firm floor securely with bolts, etc.
c
.Use the specified rack mount rail.
The use of other rail of low strength may drop the unit
and cause the risk of injury.
.Mount the unit into a rack with two person in steady
posture.
m
.When other equipment with built-in hard disk drive is
already mounted in the same rack for mounting this unit,
turn off the power of the equipment before mounting this
unit.
.Do not operate this unit without the upper lid and bottom
plate except when servicing it.
.Connect long enough power cable and network cable,
considering that the unit is pulled out from the rack.
.Adjust the temperature inside the rack within the range
of the unit’s operating temperature.
(Refer to Section 1-3.)
.Secure a sufficient space between the rack and the unit to
properly radiate and exhaust internal heat. (Refer to
Section 1-5.)
.The width may vary depending on rack types.
In that case, prepare a spacer and adjust the width be-
tween rails.

Removing the feet

Be sure to carry the unit by the two persons or more.
1. Remove the four screws, lift the unit with both hands,
and then remove the four feet together with foot brack-
ets.

.Put the unit on an appropriate workbench when
removing and attaching the feet.
.Do not tilt the unit.
.Keep these screws, foot brackets and the feet.
When operating the unit after demounting it from the
rack, be sure to reattach the foot brackets and feet.
Tightening torque:
138 x10-2 N.m {14 kgf.cm}

2. Pull out the inner rails from the two intermediate rails.
3. While pressing the stopper of the inner rail in the
direction of the arrow A in the figure, pull the inner rail
out in the direction of the arrow B.
4. Attach the two inner rails to both sides (left and right)
of unit with six screws.
Tightening torque:
138 x10-2 N.m {14 kgf.cm}

Be sure to use the screws (B4 x6) when attaching the
inner rail.
The use other-sized screws may cause a malfunction.

Attach the inner rails paying attention to the direction
of the stoppers shown in the figure.

5. Attach the two rack angles to both sides (left and right)
of the unit with the four screws.
Tightening torque:
138 x10-2 N.m {14 kgf.cm}

6. Secure the mount rail attachment with the two nuts
(with washers) and two screws (B4 x12) supplied
with the rail bracket.
Tightening torque:

7. Temporarily secure the rail bracket (rear) to the mount
rail attachment with the two screws (PSW4 x10)
supplied with the rail bracket.
8. Temporarily secure the rail bracket (front) to the outer
rail with the two nuts (with washers) and two screws
supplied with the rail bracket.
