BOOT DRIVE REPLACEMENT
Thisdocumentprovidesinstructionsforreplacingabootdriveinthe
Spectra®nTier™Verde4Uor2Umasternodes,whicharereferredtoasthe
arrayintheseinstructions.Thebootdrivesprovidestorageforthe
operatingsystemandStrataViewwebinterface.
Theprocedureisdifferentforeachsizeofmasternode.Usethe
instructionsinoneofthefollowingsections:

Before you Begin
Beforereplacingabootdrive,makesurethatyouhaveaddressedthe
requirementsinthissection.
Gather Materials and Tools

Ensure ESD Protection
Therepairenvironmentforthelibrarymustbefreeofconditionsthat
couldcauseelectrostaticdischarge(ESD).ToprotectthelibraryfromESD,
followtheseprocedureswhenrepairingortestingthelibrary:
Placeastaticprotectionmatontheworksurfaceusedwhileremoving
andinstallinglibrarycomponents.Usea1‐megohmresistortoground
thestaticprotectionmat.
Wearastaticprotectionwristbandorgroundingfootstrapwhenever
youhandlelibrarycomponentsthathavebeenremovedfromtheir
anti‐staticbags.Connectthewristbandtothestaticprotectionmatorto
othersuitableESDgrounding.
Note: Keepallelectroniccomponentsinanti‐staticbagswhennotin
use.
Discontinue Storage Operations
Nofilestorageoperationscanoccurwhilereplacingabootdriveinthe
nTierVerdemasternode.Useyoursoftwaretostopallfilestorage
operationstothearray.
Identify the Failed Boot Drive
1. Ifnecessary,logintotheStrataViewwebinterfaceasdescribedinthe
SpectranTierVerdeUserGuide.
2. Fromthemenubar,selectStatus > Hardware.TheHardwarescreen
displays.
3. ClickSystem.Thescreenrefreshestoshowthestatusfortheprocessors,
memory,andbootdrivesinthearray.Thefaileddriveisindicatedbyan
erroricon(anXinaredcircle).
4. Recordthefaileddriveserialnumberonapieceofpaper.

Power Off the Array
ThenTierVerdearraymustbepoweredoffbeforereplacingabootdrive.
Usethefollowinginstructionstopoweroffthearray.
1. Clickthepowericoninthelowerright‐handcornerofanyscreeninthe
StrataViewwebinterface.ThePowerscreendisplays.
2. OnthePowerscreen,clickShutdown.
3. Aconfirmationscreendisplays.Confirmtheselectiontoshutdownthe
nTierVerdearray.
4. Oncethearrayfinishespoweringoff,disconnectthepowercordsfrom
thepowersupplies.
5. DisconnectallEthernetandSAScablesfromthearray.Itmaybehelpful
tolabelthecablestoensuretheyarere‐connectedtothecorrectportat
theendoftheprocedure.

Caution
Disconnecting the power cords is necessary to take the array out of Standby power
mode. While in Standby, the motherboard can be damaged by a dropped screw or
electrostatic discharge.

ToreplaceabootdriveinthenTierVerdearray,thearraymustbetaken
outofitsrack.Ifthearrayisnotmountedinarack,skiptoReplaceaBoot
Driveonpage 10.
Remove the Front Bezel
Youneedtoremovethefrontbezelpriortoremovingthearrayfroma
rack.Thebezelisheldinplacewithmagnets.Graspthesidesofthebezel
andpullitstraightoffthearray.
Remove the Array From a Rack
Usetheseinstructionstoremovethearrayfromarack.
1. Usinga#2Phillipsscrewdriver,removethescrewoneachsideofthe
frontofthearray.
Warning
The Spectra nTier Verde array weighs between 57 lb (25.8 kg) and 136 lb (61.9 kg)
depending on how many drives are installed. Use extreme caution when moving it.
Always use two people, one on each side, when lifting or moving it.

2. GraspbothhandlesofthefrontpanelofthenTierVerdearrayandpull
thearrayoutoftherackuntiltheouterrailsarefullyextendedandthe
self‐lockinglatchesengageoneachrackrail.
3. Whilesupportingthefrontofthechassiswithonehand,pressandhold
theself‐lockinglatchesonbothinnerrailsdownward.While
supportingthearray,pullthechassistherestofthewayoutoftherack.
4. Movethearraytoasturdyworksurface.

Replace a Boot Drive
Usetheinstructionsinthissectiontoreplaceabootdriveinthearray.
1. Usinga#1Phillipsscrewdriver,removethefourscrewsthatsecurethe
coverofthearraytothechassis.Threescrewsarelocatedonthesidesof
thearray,whileoneislocatedonthetop.
2. Setthecoveraside.
Caution
Any damage to the Spectra nTier Verde caused by failure to protect it from
electrostatic discharge (ESD) voids the Spectra nTier Verde warranty. To protect the
Spectra nTier Verde drives from damage:
Wear an anti-static wristband, properly grounded, throughout the procedure. If
a wristband is not available, touch a known grounded surface, such as the
unpainted metal chassis.
Leave the SATA DOM in its anti-static bag until you are ready to install it.
Do not place the un-bagged SATA DOM on any metal surfaces.
