spencer’s Components
The spencer® SmartHub is an in-home medication dispenser that makes taking multiple medications
easier. The following are several main components of the device.
Carrying Case
The box in which spencer is delivered to your home. Please
store this box in a safe location in case you ever need to
return or exchange your device.
Dispenser
Located beneath the device’s touch screen, this is the slot
where your medication packs are delivered.
Lid
Door-like panel at the top of the spencer device that
opens and closes for inserting, securing, and removing the
medication rell.
Medication Rell
Medication cartridge (rell) spooled specically for you by
your pharmacist that contains medication packs.
Pack
Plastic package containing your medications and identifying
information that is produced by a strip packaging system.
Rell Tub
The well at the top of the spencer device where the
medication cartridge (rell) is placed.
Touch Screen
Similar to the screens used on cell phones and tablets,
spencer’s front display panel enables you to interact with him
by touching the screen with your nger.
USB Port
Slot for charging compatible devices.

Brake
A small, metal wire in the lower-right of
the rell that holds the medication strip
in place.
Bluetooth Devices
Special devices that connect to
spencer wirelessly and allow spencer to
collect health data (e.g., weight, blood
pressure).
Dispenser
Located beneath the device’s touch
screen, this is the slot where your
medication packs are delivered.
Dispense Reminders
• Alert tone with adjustable volume;
sound intensifies for escalated
dispense.
• Flashing light that increases in
frequency for escalated dispense.
• Change in screen color from black
(normal) to amber (escalated).
• Change in screen color to red
(missed dose).
Dose
All medications taken at a given
dispense time.
Lid
Door-like panel at the top of the spencer
device that opens and closes for
inserting, securing, and removing the
medication rell.
Lock
Option that allows you to lock the
system using a code. You choose a lock
code and can change it at any time.
Menu
List of options on the spencer device
touch screen. Examples are Readings
and Medications.
Meds on the Go®
Option that lets you dispense
medications for specic dates and times
when you are going to be away from
your spencer device.
My Medications
Option to view the name, strength,
picture, and description for each type of
medication in your spencer rell.
My Schedule
Option to view the dispense schedule,
picture, and description of your
medication(s).
Pack
Plastic package containing your
medications and identifying information
that is produced by a strip packaging
system.
Rells Containing Med Packs
Medication cartridge (rell) spooled
specically for you by your pharmacist.
Secure Data Storage1
Records of your spencer device
transactions and communications with
your pharmacy. These records are
protected, secure, and only visible to
designated individuals.
spencerAssist®
The mobile application for iOS or
Android that tracks adherence and
health readings (e.g., weight, blood
pressure, glucose, blood oxygen, heart
rate) from your spencer device.
spencerCare®
The web application that collects
medication adherence and health
information from your spencer device
and allows your professional care team
to communicate with you.
spencerConnect®
Technology in your spencer device that
allows it to connect to Bluetooth devices
and send data to spencerCare.
Touch Screen
Front display panel that enables you
to interact with spencer by touching it
with your nger. (Touch screens are
also used on cell phones and computer
tablets.)
USB Port
Slot for charging compatible devices.
Video Chat
Option to view upcoming video
appointments and a link to start
the video chat at the time of an
appointment.
Video Tutorials
Short videos explaining how to use
your spencer device. Touch Tools,
then Video Tutorials to display a list of
videos.

Using the Touch Screens
The device touch screen guides you through the dispensing process and various actions when you
touch certain areas of the screen.
For example, touching the Dispense button tells spencer that you are ready to receive your current
medications.
The device uses a screensaver when it is in an idle state, as shown in the image to the left. When the
device is idle, touch the screen anywhere to “wake it up” and display the Home screen.
Using the Icons & Buttons
Most spencer screens have a common layout and navigation buttons. Some of the important ones are:
Back Arrow Button
Touch this button to go to the
previous screen
Home Icon
Touch this icon to go to
the Home screen
Screen Name
This is the name of the screen you are
currently on and is considered the “active”
screen.

Setting up spencer
To set up your spencer SmartHub, follow these instructions:
1. Open the spencer case and review the Quick Start Guide.
2. Identify a stable, at, dry surface in your home on which to place the device. Be sure it is near a
power outlet.
Note: Be sure your additional medical devices (e.g., blood pressure monitor) can be placed and used
within 15-feet of the spencer SmartHub.
3. Remove the spencer SmartHub from its case and place it on the chosen surface.
4. Plug in the device.
The spencer SmartHub will automatically turn on. (You do not need to use the power button to turn
on the device.)
An introduction screen displays.
5. Select your preferred language by touching the name on the screen, and then touch the Next
button.
The Setup screen displays, giving you the option to play the Intro Video or move on to loading the
rell.
6. To watch the video, touch the Intro Video button. To move forward, click the Next button.
NOTE: You can nd this and other videos in the Tools section later.
7. Touch the Pause or Restart buttons if you want to stop or replay any sections.
8. After you have watched the video, or to skip the video and load the medication cartridge, touch the
Next button.

Loading the Medication Cartridge (Refill) – New Users
To load the medication cartridge (rell) into your spencer SmartHub, follow these instructions:
1. Touch the Load Rell button.
The lid opens so you can insert the medication cartridge (i.e., the medication rell).
2. Align the front of the medication cartridge (the rell) with the front of the spencer SmartHub.
3. Insert the rell into the rell tub, ensuring that it is seated securely.
4. Gently close the lid until it catches. It will finish closing itself.
The Rell Loading screen displays. When it is nished loading, the New User Agreement screen
displays.
5. Read the information all the way to the end, using your nger to scroll through the information.
6. When you have nished reading the information, touch the Disagree or Agree button.
NOTE: The device will not dispense medication if you choose the Disagree option.
7. Touch the Yes button on both screens to conrm your name.
When it is ready, the Home screen displays.
NOTE: Coding on the label of your rell species your local time zone. If you move spencer to a different
time zone, the Home screen will display the time from the original time zone until your next rell.

Loading the Medication Cartridge (Refill) –
Existing Users
If you are an existing spencer SmartHub user, your device will alert you that it is time for you to load a
rell. To load the medication cartridge (rell) into the rell tub, follow these instructions:
1. Touch the Load Rell button.
The lid opens so you can insert the medication cartridge (i.e., the medication rell).
2. Align the front of the medication cartridge (the rell) with the front of the spencer SmartHub.
3. Insert the rell into the rell tub, ensuring that it is seated securely.
4. Gently close the lid until it catches. It will finish closing itself.
The Rell Loading screen displays.
5. Touch the Yes button on both screens to conrm your name.
A message displays indicating that the rell is loading. When it is ready, the Home screen displays.
For more information about the Home screen, refer to

Navigating spencer’s Screens
The Home Screen
All screens allow you to navigate back to the Home screen, which displays the date, time, and other
critical information related to your medication. The Home screen displays the following information:
• Video Tutorials
• Settings
• spencerAssist
• Agreements
• Open Lid
• Shut Down

Dispense Screens
1. Normal Dispense Screen
The Home screen changes when it is time to dispense your medications. spencer reminds you to take
your medications during the normal dispense time.
2. Escalated Dispense Screen
An orange screen displays when the dispense time has almost passed.
3. Missed Meds Screen
A red screen displays when you have missed your medications.
Error Screens
The Home screen is hidden when an error occurs.
A red screen displays to indicate a system error and to instruct you about what action(s) to take.

Removing the Refill to Resolve Errors
Many times an error screen may be resolved by removing and then re-inserting the rell into the
spencer SmartHub.
To remove the rell, follow these instructions:
1. Touch the Remove Rell button to open the lid.
2. Remove the rell box completely out of the device.
3. Gently replace the rell.

Accessing Video Tutorials
Home > Tools > Video Tutorials
There are a number of help videos that show you how to use the features of your spencer SmartHub.
To see the complete list and view videos, follow these instructions:
1. Navigate to the Home screen and touch the Tools icon.
2. On the Tools screen, touch the Video Tutorials button.
The Video Tutorials screen displays a long list of available videos, all of which will not t on the
screen. To scroll through the available videos, use your nger to move the gray bar on the right (the
slider) down to see the bottom of the list.
3. Touch the button for the video you want to view.
4. Use the buttons at the bottom of the tutorial screen to adjust the volume for the video, play/pause
the video, and/or restart the video.
NOTE: The Restart button changes from grey (inactive) to blue (active) once you start a video. The Play
button changes to a Pause button while the video is playing.

Adjusting the Alert Volume
Home > Tools > Settings > Alert Volume
To adjust the alert volume, follow these instructions:
1. Navigate to the Home screen and touch the Tools icon.
2. On the Tools screen, touch the Settings button.
3. On the Settings screen, touch the Alert Volume button.
4. On the Alert Volume screen, touch the speaker icons on either side to decrease and to increase
the volume.
NOTE: This volume setting is for the normal dispense notication. The escalated dispense notication
will be louder.

Using the Child Lock Feature
Home > Tools > Settings > Child Lock
The spencer device has an optional Child Lock feature that requires users to establish a four-digit code.
When the Child Lock feature is enabled, you must enter the Child Lock code to perform most functions
on spencer. For this reason, it is important that you remember the code that you set.
To turn on the Child Lock feature, follow these instructions:
1. Navigate to the Home screen and touch the Tools icon.
2. On the Tools screen, touch the Settings button.
3. On the Settings screen, touch the Child Lock button.
The Child Lock screen displays with a message asking you to enter a new Lock code.
NOTE: Be sure to use a code that you can easily remember. Examples of common codes include your
house number (if it is four digits), the rst or last four digits of your phone number, your birthday in the
form of the two-digit month and two-digit day, or the year of your birth.
4. Enter a four-digit code of your choice and touch the Next button.
If you enter a number by mistake, use the bottom right key to backup and delete the number.
5. Enter to same four-digit number again to make sure you entered it correctly.
6. Touch the Next button.
spencer displays the code you just entered.
NOTE: Write down this code and keep it in a safe place. If there are children in your house, do not tape
the code to spencer.
7. Touch the OK button to return to the Home screen.
