The operator shall have certain qualifications before he/she can safely operate a
Stertil mobile column lift and these include ability in written or oral communications
as demonstrated by either a high school diploma or certificate of equivalence,
aptitude test or job experience. He/she must also have the ability to understand
the mathematical, mechanical and electrical principles of automotive lifts as
demonstrated by one of, or a combination of aptitude test, training program,
technical vocational school or job experience.
The owner/employer of the Stertil mobile column lift must ensure that the operator
of the mobile column lift must be instructed and trained in the safe use and
operation of the lift using the manufacturer provided instructions and warning
labels and the Automotive Lift Institute Publications, "Lifting It Right" and "Safety
Tips".
The lift that has been delivered to you contains the supply of operating
instructions, general safety information, safety tips and warning labels on the
control post. As an owner, or employer, it is requested that you display these
materials in a conspicuous location in the lift operating area.
The owner or employer shall appropriately document operator training by

activities with the greatest caution to avoid injuries or damage to the vehicle lift. All
operation, maintenance and service activities may only be performed by an
authorized and sufficiently instructed person. It is the responsibility of those in
charge of preparing and/or supervising such maintenance or overhaul work to take
the necessary action(s) to ensure safe working conditions.
Our safety requirements may under no circumstances conflict with the legal

instruction, Stertil shall accept no liability whatsoever.
WARNING

Operation & Service Manual (VA) 16 ST1175
The supervisor or individual responsible for the work site or organization
respectively must ensure that the organization's safety guidelines are strictly
followed.
Failure to follow the safety instructions may lead to personal injury and damage to
the vehicle lift and vehicle.
3.2 Hazards
3.2.1 Electrical hazards
Precautions to be taken when working with electrical equipment:
Consider all circuits live until you have personally turned the power off and
locked the main switch. Also tag the main switch with a safety sign.
Keep your clothing, hands and feet dry.
Do not wear rings, watches, metal-rimmed glasses or jewelry when working
around electrical circuits.
Static electricity can harm electronic parts. Always make sure that you are
earthed when working on electronic parts.
Maintenance and repair activities on the electrical system of the machine may
only be performed by special trained electricians which are familiar with the
common and local electrical regulations in charge.
3.2.2 Mechanical hazards
Precautions to be taken when working with mechanical equipment:
Do not wear rings, watches, jewelery, ties or loose sleeves when working
around moving mechanical parts.
Keep long hair covered when working around moving mechanical parts.
Stay away from moving machine parts.
Always use spare parts of a type and part number recommended by Stertil.
WARNING

Operation & Service Manual (VA) 17 ST1175
3.2.3 Fall hazards
Precautions to be taken when working on assemblies at higher altitudes:
Identify potential fall hazards prior to each project and during a daily walk-
around.
Pay attention to hazards associated with routine and non-routine tasks.
Eliminate the need for fall protection where possible by rescheduling the task,
isolating the task, or changing the task.
Emphasize fall hazards unique to the site, such as open floor holes or shafts,
riser penetrations, and skylights.
Team up with other construction employers and employees to identify best
practices and share fall prevention solutions.
Chose the correct ladder for the task, read the instructions, and be sure that the
ladder is in good condition. Check for surrounding hazards, stable footing, and
the proper angle.
Identify skylights and make sure they are properly protected.
Contact your supervisor if you see fall hazards or have any other questions
about fall prevention. Do not work until unsafe conditions have been corrected.
3.3 General safety instructions
If performing operation or maintenance activities, always carry out these activities
with the greatest caution to avoid injuries or damage to the equipment.
Always adhere to the local safety regulations. The safety instructions in this
manual only serve as a guideline. Stertil B.V. is not liable for damage or physical
injury as a result of ignoring the safety instructions.
Examples of local safety instructions are:
A safety plan.
Work area must be shielded off or clearly marked with signs indicating that
technicians are responsible for their own safety.
A first-aid kit has to be present.
If you are not familiar with the vehicle lift, read the operator manual and especially
this chapter about safety before starting to operate the vehicle lift.
Do not use the vehicle lift for purposes other than those specified.
This is dangerous and not allowed.
Never operate the vehicle lift when persons, goods and suchlike are on it, under it
or in front of it.
WARNING

Operation & Service Manual (VA) 18 ST1175
At all times, the user of the vehicle lift is responsible for a safe operation of the lift
and should always notice the maximum lifting height to prevent damage to the
vehicle and the building.
Modifications to parts or to the operating system may result in danger for
the user.
All persons working on the vehicle lift must have free access to the instruction
manuals.
3.3.1 The importance of safety
The importance of safety at work place can't be over exemplified. It is mostly felt at
places where the operators and engineers are exposed to sustained risk in their
daily operations. Adaptation of safety measures not only ensures safety of the life
of the operators and engineers but also of their family dependents.
It is important that your organization adopt some basic safety measures so as to
ensure overall safety of the workplace. First and foremost all operations should be
executed under supervision of a supervisor. He or she is responsible for discharge
of all safety measures. All the safety provisions must be brought to the attention of
everyone employed at the location where the vehicle lift is operated or maintained.
A list of all adopted safety measures should be displayed at a prominent place so
as to attract attention of the operators and engineers.
3.3.2 Working in accordance with procedures
Always work in accordance with the procedures and never deviate from them.
3.3.3 Safety warnings
This document contains a number of special symbols and conventions that the
user must understand. For the symbols in the text, see section Document
conventions (on page 10).
