aufzustellen, anzuschließen und zu bedienen.
Alle notwendigen Einzelheiten und Handgriffe
werden anschaulich erklärt. Bitte lesen Sie des-
halb diese Anleitung sorgfältig durch; bewahren
Sie sie zum etwaigen Nachlesen in der mitgelie-
ferten Schutzhülle an gut sichtbarer Stelle beim
Gerät auf

an aid in the proper setup, installation, and
operation of the XENON 100 SCB cold light
source. All essential details of the equipment
and all actions required on your part are clearly
presented and explained. We thus ask that you
read this manual carefully. Insert this manual in
its protective wallet and keep it available in a
convenient and conspicuous location near the
equipment.

Descripción del equipo
La fuente de luz fría XENON 100 SCB es un potente siste-
ma de iluminación. Este sistema se utiliza en primer térmi-
no para la aplicación endoscópica en combinación con
videoendoscopios para gastroenterología. En una confi-
guración especial y con un adaptador (nº. de art. 495KS),
la fuente de luz cumple también los requisitos necesarios
para aplicaciones generales más exigentes. Dado que la
lámpara Xenon de 100 W, con una temperatura de color
de 6.000 K, tiene la misma temperatura de color que la luz
solar, genera una luz particularmente clara.
La función SCB permite controlar a distancia la fuente de
luz, activar informaciones de estado del sistema y realizar
una configuración sencilla durante la inicialización. El mo-
derno diseño posibilita un manejo y mantenimiento senci-
llos.
Después de la correcta instalación y tras conectar el apa-
rato y encender la lámpara (mediante el interruptor de la
red y la tecla “Lámpara Enc. / Apag.”), el sistema de lám-
paras alcanza la potencia lumínica máxima después de
algunos segundos. Al conectar el videoendoscopio (para
gastroenterología) con la fuente de luz, se libera la protec-
ción antideslumbrante y se acopla luz en el portaluz. La
intensidad lumínica puede regularse por medio de las te-
clas Aumentar o Reducir la intensidad lumínica, estando la
lámpara encendida o apagada (ajuste previo). Para el
servicio estándar con un videoendoscopio KARL STORZ
para gastroenterología, la intensidad lumínica puede ajus-
tarse desde el 5 hasta el 100% sin deteriorar el instrumen-
to. Si es necesario, la intensidad también puede ajustarse
brevemente a más del 100% siempre que se controle que
el instrumento no se sobrecaliente ni se causen lesiones al
paciente debido al elevado ajuste de potencia. Un blo-
queo evita la activación involuntaria de este modo de ser-
vicio.
Al transcurrir el intervalo normal de mantenimiento de la
lámpara (500 horas), la indicación
 en la placa frontal se
enciende intermitente. Esta indicación está encendida an-
tes de forma permanente durante 50 horas. El aparato
posee un sistema de bomba integrado para la insuflación
y/o la irrigación con agua*. La bomba se conecta y des-
conecta con la tecla Con. / Desc.  . La velocidad de la
bomba se puede regular en tres niveles con las teclas +/-
 / :
Niveles 1+2: Margen normal
Nivel 3: Bajo condiciones “difíciles” y fuerte suciedad
de las lentes (véase también la pág. 18) sólo breve-
mente.
Description of the unit
The cold light source XENON 100 SCB is a pow-
erful light system for endoscopic use, particular-
ly in combination with videoscopes for gastro-
enterology. In a special configuration and with
the aid of an adaptor (Art. no.: 495KS), the light
source is capable of satisfying the requirements
of even demanding general purpose applica-
tions. With a color temperature of 6000 K, the
100 watt xenon lamp has the same color temper-
ature as sunlight and therefore provides an
outstanding bright illumination.
The SCB feature provides remote control of the
light source, system status information and easy
configuration upon initialization. Modern design
guarantees easy operation and maintenance.
After the unit has been installed properly and the
unit and the lamp have been switched on (via
the power switch and the ‘lamp on/off-key’), it
takes a few seconds until the lamp unfolds its
full potential. By inserting the plug of the video-
scope (for gastroenterology) into the light
source, the antiglare device gives way and light
is coupled into the light guide. The light intensity
can be adjusted via the up/down keys of the in-
tensity control either while the lamp is on or off
(preselection). For standard operation with a
KARL STORZ videoscope for gastroenterology,
the light intensity can be adjusted from 5% to
100% without any harm to the instrument. If re-
quired, but only for short periods of time and un-
der the conditions of increased attention to over-
heating of instrument or harm to the patient due
to high intensity levels, the intensity may be
boosted beyond 100%. A locking scheme
prevents unintended activation of this mode.
The expiry of the normal lamp service interval,
which amounts to 500 hours, is signalled via a
flashing indicator on the front panel. This indica-
tor is lit permanently 50 hours before that. A pump
system for insufflation and/or water irrigation* is in-
tegrated into the system. The pump is started and
stopped via the on/off button . The pump speed
is adjustable over three levels via the +/-  / :
Level 1+2: Normal range
Level 3: For ‘difficult’ conditions and severe lens
soiling (see also p. 18) - short periods of time
only!

Die Kaltlichtquelle XENON 100 SCB ist ein leistungs-
starkes Lichtsystem. Sie wird in erster Linie für den en-
doskopischen Einsatz in Kombination mit Videoendos-
kopen für die Gastroentorologie verwendet. In einer
speziellen Konfiguration und mit einem Adapter (Art.-
Nr.: 495KS) erfüllt die Lichtquelle auch die
Anforderungen anspruchsvoller allgemeiner
Anwendungen. Da die 100-Watt-Xenonlampe mit einer
Farbtemperatur von 6000 K die gleiche
Farbtemperatur wie Sonnenlicht hat, erzeugt sie ein
besonders helles Licht.
Die SCB-Funktion ermöglicht eine Fernsteuerung der
Lichtquelle, das Abrufen von Systemstatus-
informationen und eine einfache Konfiguration bei der
Initialisierung. Das moderne Design ermöglicht eine
einfache Bedienung und Wartung. Nach der ord-
nungsgemäßen Installation und nach dem Einschalten
des Gerätes und der Lampe (über den Netzschalter
und die Taste „Lampe Ein / Aus“) erreicht das
Lampensystem die maximale Lichtleistung nach
einigen Sekunden. Durch das Verbinden des Videoen-
doskops (für die Gastroenterologie) mit der Lichtquelle
wird der Blendschutz freigegeben und Licht in den
Lichtleiter eingekoppelt. Die Lichtintensität kann über
die Tasten zum Erhöhen bzw. Reduzieren der
Lichtintensität bei eingeschalteter oder ausgeschalteter
Lampe (Voreinstellung) geregelt werden. Für den
Standardbetrieb mit einem KARL STORZ
Videoendoskop für die Gastroenterologie lässt sich die
Lichtintensität von 5 bis 100 % einstellen, ohne das
Instrument zu schädigen. Bei Bedarf kann die
Intensität auch kurzfristig über 100 % eingestellt wer-
den, sofern sorgfältig darauf geachtet wird, durch die
hohe Leistungseinstellung das Instrument nicht zu
überhitzen und den Patienten nicht zu schädigen. Eine
Sperre verhindert die versehentliche Aktivierung dieser
Betriebsart.Bei Ablauf des normalen Wartungsintervalls
der Lampe (500 Stunden) blinkt die Anzeige an der
Frontplatte. Diese Anzeige leuchtet 50 Stunden vorher
permanent. Das Gerät besitzt ein integriertes
Pumpensystem zur Insufflation und/oder
Wasserspülung*. Die Pumpe wird mit der Taste
Ein/Aus ein- und ausgeschaltet. Die Pumpenge-
schwindigkeit lässt sich mit den Tasten +/-  / in
drei Stufen regeln:
Stufe 1+2: Normaler Bereich
Stufe 3: Bei „schwierigen“ Verhältnissen und starker
Linsenverschmutzung (s. auch S. 18)- nur kurzzeitig!

front panel
The pilot light is highlighted permanently when
the light source is turned on and
• the lamp operating hours are between 450 h

• the ignition fails due to a defective or
improperly installed lamp
• the light source is overheated due to obstruct-

The pilot light flashes if the lamp has been in
service for 500 h and beyond that. Reset the
signal by
• either replacing the lamp and carrying out the
appropriate measures (please see the section

Warning: Grounding reliability can only be
achieved when the unit is connected to a prop-
erly installed ‘Hospital Only’ or ‘Hospital Grade’
receptacle (i.e., approved for use in an operat-
ing room environment). Routinely inspect electri-
cal plug and cord. Do not use if inspection
reveals damage.
Warning: The electrical installations in the oper-
ating room or examination room in which the unit
is connected and operated must comply with the
applicable IEC standards.
Warning: Keep unit out of reach of patients.
Warning: Always unplug the unit and disconnect
the endoscope before carrying out any

light outlet of the light adapter or the air vent of
the unit when the light system is switched on.
Warning: Do not handle the XENON lamp with-
out wearing protective gear - at the very least
gloves and safety goggles. Lamp explosion is
an inherent danger and can take place anytime
without a noticeable reason.
Caution: Always operate the cold light source
with the minimum brightness setting necessary
to achieve optimum illumination.
Note: If the cold light source is switched on and
off frequently, this increases wear to the xenon
lamp. Therefore, during short interruptions, the
brightness should be reduced.
Caution: Only operate the unit at the line voltage
stated on the manufacturer’s identification plate.
Caution: When replacing fuses, only use fuses
of the specified type and interrupt rating.
Caution: Do not store liquids on or above the
unit. Avoid allowing fluids to enter the housing.

ben, die für optimale Beleuchtung notwendig ist.
Hinweis: Häufiges Aus- und Einschalten der
Kaltlichtquelle führt zu erhöhtem Verschleiß der
Xenonlampe. Bei kürzeren Unterbrechungen die
Lichtleistung reduzieren.
Vorsicht: Das Gerät nur mit der auf dem
Typenschild angegebenen Spannung betreiben.
Vorsicht: Bei Auswechseln der Gerätesicherun-
gen nur Sicherungen verwenden, die den vorge-
schriebenen Typ und den vorgeschriebenen
Auslösewert haben.
Vorsicht: Keine Flüssigkeiten auf oder über dem
Gerät abstellen. Ein Eindringen von Flüssigkeiten
in das Gehäuse ist unbedingt zu vermeiden.

Videoscope
(for gastroenterology)
Warning:
Danger of glare! Never look into the
distal end of a videoscope.
Warning: High-intensity light radiated through
the endoscope can give rise to high tempera-
tures at the tip of the endoscope. For standard
operation, do not exceed intensity beyond the
green section of the intensity display. A higher
intensity must only be used for a short time and
only under direct visual control.
Warning: To avoid burns, do not place the
videoscope onto or near patients.
Warning: When configured for general purpose
applications (warning signal is on and the light
source beeps when the power is switched on)
do not use the light source in combination with
videoscopes for gastroenterology and in
corresponding applications.
Caution: Do not place a connected videoscope
on combustible materials such as textiles (surgi-
cal drapes) or in the direct vicinity of swabs
soaked with combustible fluids, such as disin-
fectant. These could catch fire from heat devel-
opment at the distal end of the videoscope.
Note: Any damage to the unit resulting from
incorrect operation or misuse is not covered by
the manufacturer’s warranty.
Note: Lamps do not have an indefinite service
life, so the lamp may fail. Although it is highly un-
likely that a lamp will fail during operation, but it
cannot be ruled out. As a result the following ap-
plies: a) For purely diagnostic use, we recom-
mend that you have a replacement lamp ready.
b) For therapeutic endoscopic interventions we
strongly recommend always having a suitable,
ready-for-use replacement light source available.

Hinweis: Lampen sind Verschleißartikel.
Während des Einsatzes kann es somit auch zu
Lampenausfällen kommen. Es ist sehr unwahr-
scheinlich, aber nicht ausgeschlossen, dass ei-
ne Lampe während des Betriebs ausfällt.
Daraus ergibt sich Folgendes: a) Für die rein di-
agnostische Anwendung wird empfohlen, eine
Ersatzlampe bereitzuhalten. b) Für therapeuti-
sche endoskopische Eingriffe wird dringend
empfohlen, stets eine passende betriebsbereite
Ersatzlichtquelle verfügbar zu halten.
Vorsicht: Die Lampe nicht mit bloßen Fingern
berühren. Berührungsschutz verwenden! Die
Berührung der Lampe mit bloßen Fingern kann
zu Betriebsstörungen führen.

Normal use
The XENON 100 SCB light source is to be used
in combination with KARL STORZ videoscopes
for gastroenterology. A particular feature of
these endoscopes is an integrated connector for
light insufflation and/or irrigation. The XENON
100 SCB supports this via an appropriate socket
and an integrated air pump. In addition to this,
the light source offers the following features:
• SCB connectivity/functionality for application
inside a SCB installation;
• an optional configuration as a standard light
source for general purpose application (along-
side gastroenterology with the respective
videoscopes).
The XENON 100 SCB light source shall only be
operated and used in compliance with the
following terms and conditions:
• use restricted to human medical applications
(especially gastroenterology);
• use only in combination with KARL STORZ
videoscopes for gastroenterology
(gastroscopes);
• or with the aid of an adaptor (Art. no. 495KS)
in combination with other KARL STORZ
endoscopes (flexible and rigid);
• use in rooms for medical applications
(operations);
• use only under standard environmental
conditions;
• use only while connected to public mains,

who have a corresponding specialized qualifica-

in the use of the unit.

The unit may only be used in medical rooms
in which the electrical equipment has been
installed in accordance with the applicable
national regulations.
The unit is equipped with a connector for attach-
ing a ground line. It should be connected in
compliance with the applicable national
regulations.
It is not intended for use in areas subject to ex-
plosion hazards. This means, for example, that
when using easily combustible and explosive in-
halation anesthetics or mixtures thereof, the unit
must not be operated inside the hazard zone
shown in the diagram. This also applies to highly
combustible and explosive chemicals, e.g., skin
disinfectants and fast-acting surface
disinfectants.

Safety precautions when
operating the unit
It is the user’s responsibility to make sure that the unit
is safe and operating properly before using it.
During treatment using the cold light source
XENON 100 SCB, the patient must be treated and
kept under observation with the usual medical care.
This includes, in particular, monitoring sterile applica-
tion conditions where required by the type of
intervention.
The XENON 100 SCB light source is fail-safe up to a
very high degree. Nevertheless, it is mandatory to have a
spare light source immediately available as a backup
system at the site of operation in case the type of opera-
tion requires a 100% fail-safe situation as regards the
light source. If so, the spare light source has to satisfy all
requirements to handle the exception (startup time, con-
nectivity, optical power, etc.). These requirements de-
pend on the application. Therefore, it is the responsibility
of the user to define these requirements and make sure
that they are met by the installed backup system.

fuente de luz, debe tenerse una fuente de repuesto en el
quirófano. La fuente de repuesto debe cumplir todos los
requisitos para una situación excepcional (tiempo de ca-
lentamiento, posibilidad de conexión, potencia lumínica,
etc.). Los requisitos dependen de la aplicación, por lo que
es el usuario quien debe fijar estos requisitos y quien tam-
bién debe asegurarse que el sistema de repuesto instala-
do cumple estos requisitos.

Der Anwender hat sich vor der Anwendung des
Gerätes von der Funktionssicherheit und dem ord-
nungsgemäßen Zustand des Gerätes zu überzeugen.
Während der Behandlung unter Verwendung der
Kaltlichtquelle XENON 100 SCB muss der Patient mit
der üblichen medizinischen Sorgfalt behandelt und
beobachtet werden. Dazu gehört insbesondere die
Einhaltung der Sterilität, sofern die Art des Eingriffs
dies erfordert.
Die Lichtquelle XENON 100 SCB ist extrem ausfallsicher.
Dennoch ist eine Ersatz-Lichtquelle im OP bereitzuhal-
ten, wenn die Operation eine fehlerfreie Funktion der
Lichtquelle erfordert. Die Ersatz-Lichtquelle muss alle
Anforderungen für die Ausnahmesituation erfüllen
(Aufwärmzeit, Anschlussmöglichkeit, Lichtleistung, usw.).
Die Anforderungen richten sich nach der Anwendung.
Daher obliegt die Festlegung dieser Anforderungen dem
Anwender. Er muss auch sicherstellen, dass das instal-
lierte Ersatzsystem diese Anforderungen erfüllt.

Unpacking the unit
Carefully unpack the cold light source and
remove the unit and its accessories from their
packaging.
Check for missing items and evidence of
shipping damage.
File any complaints with the manufacturer or
supplier immediately. If possible, retain the origi-
nal packing materials for later use; these can
come in handy if the unit has to be transported.

Fitting/replacing a label strip on the front

The appropriate controls/indicators for the
unit are designated on the label strip. The label
strips are currently available in 6 languages. The
‘English’ label strip is pre-fitted.
Undo the quick-release coupling mechanisms on
the back of the unit (turn 90° counterclockwise).

acumulación interna de calor que provo-
ca la desconexión de seguridad de la
lámpara (la lámpara de control  se en-
ciende; para solucionar este error véan-
se las págs. 34/35).
Nota: Período de enfriamiento: aprox. 10 a
15 minutos.

heat, which leads to safety shut-off of
the lamp (the pilot light  lights up; for

Push the unit cover backward (see also the sec-
tion ‘lamp replacement’ page 22) and remove
the front side cover which is locked into place on
the left-hand side.

Remove the pre-fitted ‘English’ label strips and
slide the selected label strips between the plastic
and the metal front.
Fold the strips along the marked line so that the
side cover can be refitted without any obstruction.
Reattach the side cover.
Close the unit cover again and secure it with the
quick-release coupling mechanisms.
Place the unit on a flat surface.
Caution: Do not block any air vents.
Danger of overheating.
Do not place the unit directly against the
wall since the air vents are on the rear
and the right-hand side of the unit
(viewed from front) (minimum clearance
of 10 cm). When overheated, the unit

Retire la tarjeta de identificación “inglesa” pre-
montada y deslice la tarjeta seleccionada entre
la lámina decorativa y la chapa frontal.
Doble la tarjeta por la marca, a fin de volver a
colocar la cubierta lateral sin impedimentos.
Vuelva a colocar la cubierta lateral.
Cierre nuevamente la cubierta del aparato y
asegúrela de nuevo con los cierres rápidos.
Coloque el equipo sobre una superficie plana.
Advertencia:
No cubra las ranuras de
ventilación. Peligro de sobrecalenta-
miento.
No coloque el aparato directamente contra la
pared, ya que las ranuras de ventilación se en-
cuentran en el lado posterior y el lado derecho
(visto desde adelante) (distancia mínima a la pa-
red: 10 cm). En caso de sobrecalentamiento el
aparato se desconecta automáticamente.

Die Geräteabdeckung zurückschieben (siehe
auch den Abschnitt „Lampenwechsel“ auf Seite
22) und die links verriegelte Frontblende entfer-
nen.
Den vormontierten „englischen“ Beschriftungs-
streifen entfernen und den ausgewählten
Beschriftungsstreifen zwischen Dekorfolie und
Frontblech schieben.
Den Streifen an der Markierung knicken, damit
die Seitenblende wieder ungehindert ange-
bracht werden kann.
Seitenblende wieder aufstecken.
Gerätehaube wieder schließen und mit den
Schnellverschlüssen wieder sichern.
Das Gerät auf eine ebene Oberfläche stellen.
Vorsicht: Lüftungsschlitze nicht abde-
cken. Überhitzungsgefahr.
Das Gerät nicht direkt an die Wand stel-
len, da sich auf der Rückseite und an der rech-
ten Seite (von vorn gesehen) Lüftungsschlitze
befinden (Wandabstand mindestens 10 cm). Bei
Überhitzung schaltet das Gerät automatisch ab.
Warnung: Bei ungenügender Belüftung
des Gerätes kann es zu einem internen
Hitzestau kommen, welcher zur
Sicherheitsabschaltung der Lampe führt
(die Kontroll-Leuchte  leuchtet auf; zur
Fehlerbehebung siehe S. 34/35).
Hinweis: Abkühlzeit ca. 10 - 15 Minuten!.
