Introduction
The VRC 5000 is a rugged, NEMA 4/IP66, PC-compatible
computer. The VRC 5000 is available with or without a
touchscreen, and a heater. The VRC 5000 provides a full VGA
display (either electroluminescent or color LCD), multiple network
options and full I/O capability. Each VRC system is fully PC-
compatible with the MS-DOS Versions 3.3 through 6.22,
Windows®3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95 and
Windows NT operating systems.
There are two models available. Unless specifically stated, the term
VRC 5000 refers to both models:
• The VRC 5000 is a fixed-mounted terminal that can be hard-
wired to a local area network (LAN) using Ethernet connec-
tions. It can also be equipped with wireless (RF) network
communications where a hard-wired LAN is not practical.
• The VRC 5040 is designed for a vehicular-mounted applica-
tion. It is powered from the vehicle’s battery through a power
converter. It uses Symbol’s Spectrum 24 2.4 GHz spread-spec-
trum radio link to communicate with (RF) network access
points hard-wired into the LAN. Antenna options include
patch and “rubber duck” types.

About this Guide
This guide provides information on the operation of the VRC 5000
and the VRC 5040. For information on installation, refer to the
VRC 4000 Series Installation Guide (p/n 70-32536-xx). For more
detailed information on any of the following topics, refer to the

Parts of the VRC 5000
Front Panel
The VRC front panel consists of a gasketed resistive touchscreen
mounted over a flat-panel video display. The VRC can be operated
by touching the screen to activate functions and initiate actions.
All touchscreen/display combinations operate in a similar manner.
The type of display provided in your particular VRC model is
matchedto the specific requirementsof your application, including
ambient lighting, available viewing angle and environmental
extremes.
Rear Panel
All cabled connections to the VRC are made through the rear panel,
with the exception of the RF connection in wireless communication-
equipped systems. Located on the rear panel are a RESET button, a
power connector, a parallel I/O connector, and one serial I/O
connector. Also located on the rear panel is a connector for an
external keyboard, and a network connection.

Basic Operation
Power-Up
Before powering up the VRC for the first time, be sure the terminal
is securely mounted, and that all cable and peripheral connections
are securely attached.
Caution: In freezer applications, do not start the VRC 5000 with
color display in the cold environment. This can damage
the fluorescent bulbs.
• To power up the VRC 5000, plug the wall-mounted power
supply into a surge-protected 110VAC outlet.
Caution: ToeliminatepotentialdamagetotheVRC5000,remove
the powersupply from the wall outlet before connecting
or disconnecting the power supply to the rear panel.
• To power up the VRC 5040, turn the DC power converter
ON/OFF switch to ON.
The VRC powers up immediately when power is applied, and
performs the following steps:
1. The VRC conducts a power-on self-test, runs the hardware
initialization program, and then boots DOS. (If your system
does not boot, or does not have a factory-installed version of
DOS, refer to Installing the DOS Operating System in the
VRC 4000/5000 Product Reference Guide.)
2. The VRC processes the config.sys and autoexec.bat start-up
files from the boot drive, typically the Flash Drive (C:\).
3. When the boot process is completed, the C:\ prompt displays
on the screen.
4. If Windows is installed, the system loads the Windows graph-
ical user interface.

PCMCIA cards appear as unique drives under the VRC operating
system. Their drive designation depends on the particular card and
the PCMCIA slot in which it is installed. See the VRC 4000/5000
Product Reference Guide for more information.
Booting the VRC 5000
If the VRC 5000 locks up during normal operation, it can be reset
by performing a warm or cold boot. The type of boot depends on
the desired state of the VRC system.
Warm Boot
Perform a warm boot when you need to clear the system’s memory
to run another program, or do not want the computer to perform a
self-test. You must have a keyboard or keyboard emulator
previously attached to the system to perform a warm boot.
To perform a warm boot:
1. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL on the keyboard or keyboard emulator
on the touchscreen. This causes the system to reprocess the
config.sys and autoexec.bat files.
2. Reload the desired software application, if necessary.
Cold Boot
Perform a cold boot when the screen is frozen or the system is
otherwise locked up. The cold boot is a power-up sequence.
• To cold boot the VRC 5000, remove the power supply from
the walloutlet, then reinsert it, OR push the RESET buttonon
the rear panel.
• To cold boot the VRC 5040, turn off the power ON/OFF
switch on the DC power converter, then turn it back on, OR
push the RESET button on the rear panel.

Touch-Based Applications
The VRC 5000 is available in both touchscreen and standard (non-
touchscreen)models.Fortouch-basedapplications,thevideoscreen
displays graphical icons whose corresponding functions are
activated when touched by a user. Touch-based applications can be
divided into two different categories:
• Graphical User Interface (GUI) applications, based on a GUI
operating system, such as Windows
• DOS-based applications.
For GUI applications, a“mouse-like” touch driver allows standard
applications to be executed. However, for ease of use, applications
should:
• use only one button
• avoid double-clicks whenever possible
• keep touch targets large (for example, scroll bars are very dif-
ficult to see).
Withtheseprovisions, applicationscanbedevelopedusingstandard
tools and practices including Visual C++, Visual Basic, etc.
Touch-based applications are composed of an application program,
a touch library, and a graphics library. Each of these is described in
detail in the VRC 4000/5000 Product Reference Guide.

Troubleshooting
Following is a checklist of common problems and their potential
solutions.
Initial Checklist
Perform an initial check of the VRC unit as follows:
1. Check the unit for any signs of exterior damage.
2. Check and reseat all rear panel cable connections.
3. Be sure the VRC is receiving operating power:
VRC 5000
- Check the circuit breakers feeding the 110VAC wall outlet
supplying power to the VRC.
- Makesurethewall-mountedpowersupply isfirmly seated
in the wall outlet.
- If a surge protector is installed between the wall-mounted
power supply and the wall outlet, make sure that if it has
an ON/OFF switch, that it is on, and that any fuses or cir-
cuit breakers on the surge protector have not blown or
tripped.
VRC 5040
- Be sure the vehicle’s battery is not dead.
- Verify that the ON/OFF switch on the DC power convert-
er is on.
- Reseatthe connectorson boththepowerinputandoutput
cables on the DC power converter.

Specific Problems

Touchscreen does
not respond. The touchscreen drivers did not load. Reboot the VRC. The touchscreen may be disconnected or de-
fective. Check connections and reboot the VRC.
Application
program does not
appear.
The application software is corrupted, or the con-
fig.sys and autoexec.bat files are not set up prop-
erly. Reload the application software on the
system, verify the config.sys and autoexec.bat files
are set up correctly to load the application pro-
gram and reboot the system.
PCMCIAcard(s)not
working. Verify the config.sys and autoexec.bat files are set up correctly to recognize PCMCIA cards.
Modem card does
not work (no dial
tone).
Check the modem setup strings in the software
package used with the modem card. Check the
telephone line connections.
VRC 5000 does not
communicate with
the network.
Check for cable breaks, shorts and bad crimps us-
ing a cable scanner. Check for electrical interfer-
ence. Check the security ID and domain station
type.
VRC 5040 does not
communicate with
the network.
Check that the antenna connection is secure. Re-
place broken antennas or cables. Check the securi-
ty ID and domain station type.
Ethernet Connection: Check that the network con-
figuration is set for I/O 240, interrupt 15 and
DMA 3. Check that the Ethernet is enabled.

Service Information
Before you use the unit, it must be configured to operate in your facility’s network and
run your applications.
If you have a problem running your unit or using your equipment, contact your
facility’s Technical or Systems Support. If there is a problem with the equipment, they
will contact the Symbol Support Center:
Warranty
Symbol Technologies, Inc. (“Symbol”) manufactures its hardware products in
accordance with industry-standard practices. Symbol warrants that for a period of
twelve (12) months from date of shipment, products will be free from defects in
materials and workmanship.
This warranty is provided to the original owner only and is not transferable to any third
party. It shall not apply to any product (i) which has been repaired or altered unless
done or approved by Symbol, (ii) which has not been maintained in accordance with
any operating or handling instructions supplied by Symbol, (iii) which has been
subjected to unusual physical or electrical stress, misuse, abuse, power shortage,
negligence or accident or (iv) which has been used other than in accordance with the
product operating and handling instructions. Preventive maintenance is the
responsibility of customer and is not covered under this warranty.
Wear items and accessories having a Symbol serial number, will carry a 90-day limited
warranty. Non-serialized items will carry a 30-day limited warranty.

Warranty Coverage and Procedure
During the warranty period, Symbol will repair or replace defective products returned
to Symbol’s manufacturing plant in the US. For warranty service in North America, call
the Symbol Support Centerat1-800-653-5350.International customers should contact
the local Symbol office or support center. If warranty service is required, Symbol will
issue a Return Material Authorization Number. Products must be shipped in the
original or comparable packaging, shipping and insurance charges prepaid. Symbol
will ship the repaired or replacement product freight and insurance prepaid in North
America. Shipments from the US or other locations will be made F.O.B. Symbol’s
manufacturing plant.
Symbol will use new or refurbished parts at its discretion and will own all parts
removed from repaired products. Customer will pay for the replacement product in
case it does not return the replaced product to Symbol within 3 days of receipt of the
replacement product. The process for return and customer’s charges will be in
accordance with Symbol’s Exchange Policy in effect at the time of the exchange.
Customer accepts full responsibility for its software and data including the appropriate
backup thereof.
Repair or replacement of a product during warranty will not extend the original
warranty term.
Symbol’sCustomerServiceorganizationoffersanarrayofserviceplans,suchason-site,
depot, or phone support, that can be implemented to meet customer’s special
operational requirements and are available at a substantial discount during warranty
period.
General
Except for the warranties stated above, Symbol disclaims all warranties, express or
implied, on products furnished hereunder, including without limitation implied
warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The stated express
warranties are in lieu of all obligations or liabilities on part of Symbol for damages,
including without limitation, special, indirect, or consequential damages arising out of
or in connection with the use or performance of the product.
Seller’s liability for damages to buyer or others resulting from the use of any product,
shall in no way exceed the purchase price of said product, except in instances of injury
to persons or property.
Some states (or jurisdictions) do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or
consequentialdamages,so the proceedingexclusionorlimitationmaynotapply toyou.

Regulatory Information
Radio Frequency Interference Requirements
This device has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital
device pursuant to Part 15 of the Federal Communications Commissions Rules and
Regulation. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful
interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This
equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed
and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to
radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to
cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the
interference at his own expense.
However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular
installation. If the equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television
reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is
encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:
