1.2 Overview the ALIS 12
Line source arrays units are tightly focused in the vertical dimensions but spread sound
widely in the horizontal dimension. These coverage characteristics reduce its ability to be used
as individual units. In order to cover the requirements for smaller array configurations and
shorter throw distances but with the same quality standards as set a line source, led to the
design of ALIS Series.
ALIS12 loudspeaker is a Hi-Q "Adaptative
Loudspeaker Integrate point Source” which
generates a modular, curved wavefront suited for a
wide range of applications. Utilizing a toroid
waveguide device ALIS12 is designed with a
trapezoidal shape for lateral coupling of adjacent
cabinets and can be deployed in tightly packed array
clusters to deliver coverage that is proportional to the
number of units in the array.
While line source array uses variable curvature
arrays to create an isophase wavefront in the vertical
plane, ALIS12 are optimized for horizontal
installations but also can be operate vertically when
necessary and generates a modular, constant
curvature wavefront.
Whit a wide operating frequencies range of 55 Hz to
18 kHz, the ALIS12 offers a smooth sound with an
extraordinary performance at low frequency. The
ALIS12 cabinet is driven by a 12-inch long excursion cone driver in a vented-box and one high
frequency 3-inch voice coil, 1.4-inch throat diameter compression driver loaded on a toroid
waveguide and attached to a constant-Q horn that provides a 20-deegree horizontal by 75-
degree vertical coverage, guaranteeing an exceptional sound projection.
Constructed of premium birch plywood, the durable enclosure is coated with polyurea
paint, hard-shell finish. A strong, hi-perforated steel grille with an acoustically transparent cloth
backing provides protection for the drivers.
The ALIS12 offer extremely easy-to-use rigging, making the system highly versatile
from touring, rental and fixed installations. ALIS12's sides include a couple of aluminium rail
that allow the unit to be easily linked with other ALIS12s in arrays by means of TALBX12 bar.
The optional THV-ALIS12 pickup plate allows lifting ALIS12 horizontal arrays of up to four units
with uptilt or downtilt from a single hanging point; two pickup plates can lift arrays of up to six
units from a single hanging point or motor using the TecB004 Universal Fly bar. The Optional
THF-ALIS12 plates to join the units in fixed installations are available.
The Optional TTG-ALIS12 bar suspends vertical arrays of up to six ALIS12s.
The Optional TA12-SMB pole socket mounting bracket allows using one ALIS12 on pole
mounted on a subwoofer or standard loudspeaker tripod stand.
Other options include weather protection and custom colour finishes for fixed
installations and applications with specific cosmetic requirements, TWD-ALIS12 wooden dolly
board for moving the enclosure and protecting the front grill during transport and storage and
FUND-ALIS12 protective cover for transporting and storage

Operation Manual

In summary, ALIS12 is a medium format system that provides a coherent, single point
source sound field. This makes ALIS12 the right system for medium-scale sound reinforcement
applications where a perfect coupling between the elements of the arrangement can be
combined, avoiding comb filtering between speakers and deliver coverage only to the desired
areas, providing a high-SPL with a perfect coupling and in terms of throw distance, the extreme
capabilities of a line source array are not required.
Tecnare ALIS12 is designed as a complete system with the T-Series class D amplifier
or DP-4896 DSP controller. Tecnare only recommends using presets developed by Tecnare
Sound System. The DP-Series Processor and T-Series Advanced System Amplifiers are ideal
for this purpose.
Thanks to dedicated factory presets, it constitutes an extremely advanced and precise
drive system for the enclosures. In high-end installation projects, the T-Series amplified
controller can deliver maximum power headroom and the best possible performances. State of
art component and finely optimised design result is generous power reserves that ensure
pristine sound quality is maintained even under the most extreme conditions.
The DP-4896 Digital Loudspeaker Controllers and the T-Series amplified controllers
feature the unique Virtual Xover limiter for passive 2-way enclosures, a Tmax transducer
thermal limiters and Xmax over-excursion protection limiter.

10
1.3 Connections
The ALIS12 loudspeaker utilizes Neutrik®SpeakON®connectors. There are two NLT4
connectors on the rear of each ALIS12. These connectors made with Neutrik®NL-4 or NL-4
compatible in-line cable connectors. All four pins of both connectors are wired in parallel to link
multiple loudspeakers on a single amplifier output. However, note that all four pins on each
connectors – even that are unused by the speaker itself- are wired in parallel (pin-to-pin) to all
the other connectors on the cabinet. Remember that parallel connection reduces the total
impedance (Ω) seen by the amplifier.
ALIS12 can be ordered in bi-amp version or passive version with internal passive
crossover network.
The total impedance of loudspeaker connected in parallel must not drop below the
minimum operating impedance of the amplifier. This will result in unsatisfactory
performance and may cause damage to the amplifier.

1.4 Processing and Amplification
Only operate Tecnare®loudspeakers with a correctly configured Tecnare preset.
Tecnare offer a complete solution that guarantees the highest level of performance. A complete
range of processors, amplifiers and controlled amplifiers with DSP are available to get this
objective. Otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the loudspeaker components.
1.4.1 Processing
The Tecnare DP4896 is the approved processors for use with the ALIS12 loudspeaker.
Refer to DP4896 user manual.
Preset for DP4896 processors have been developed for the ALIS12. Two presets for
each working version on ALIS12 are available.
•ALIS12 passive (ALIS12P) or bi-amped (ALIS12) for FOH use
•ALIS12_80 passive (ALIS12P_80) or bi-amped (ALIS12_80) to flatten the
overall frequency response.
You may obtain the settings from the DP Series at http://www.tecnare.com website.
1.4.2 Amplification
To power ALIS Series, Tecnare recommends amplifiers with the power ratings enough
to feed the loudspeakers. For high power or live applications, it is recommended to
oversize the amplifiers relative to the nominal AES output of the loudspeakers. A lower
power amplifier will not reduce the chances of driver damage due to over-excursion,
and may actually increase the risk of thermal damage due to sustained clipping.
In certain specific cases it is possible to slightly under-power the subs or loudspeakers
as long as the amplifier will not be driven to its limits.
In any case, the Tecnare processors should be deployed in front of the amp to ensure
that the amplifiers to not go into clip.
The TSeries amplifier or DP4896 processors also include:
-Virtual Xover Limiter for passive systems
- Thermal protection from power surges or overload
- Xmax Excursion displacement protection
The TSeries amplifiers are the ideal companion for maximum performance of ALIS
Series loudspeakers. These Advanced System Amplifiers Controlled with DSP offer a complete
solution of both preset and protection for any application. The ALIS Series can be driven by
T10-48, T06-48, and T20-44 and T10-44 amplifier.

3Power Amplifier selection for ALIS12
3.1 Recommended Amplifier Power
The ALIS12 has been development in conjunction with the TSeries amplifiers. We
recommend using the T10-44 and T10-48 amplifier with the ALIS12 loudspeaker. The Tecnare
TSeries Advanced System Amplifier represents current state-of-the-art in amplifier technology.
Offering a unique combination of massive power and peerless audio performance integrated
with unique DSP, the TSeries represents an unmatched advancement in amplifier technology.
Also, Tecnare PA Series two and four channel power amplifiers are recommended for
use with ALIS Series together with the DP4896 processors. These amplifiers work well at 4
ohms, making it possible to power two cabinets in parallel from each amplifier channel.
We recommend TSeries amplifiers if more than two ALIS12 loudspeaker need to be
connected in parallel, as these amplifiers can comfortably drive 2 ohm loads.
3.1.1 Maximum drive capability
•When use the ALIS12 in PASSIVE version, each PA-Series amplifiers can drive a
maximum of two enclosures by channel and four1enclosures by channel if you use
a T20-44 or T10-44.
•When use the ALIS12 in Bi-AMP version, each PA-Series amplifiers can drive a
maximum of two enclosures by channel, with separate channels being used HF and
LF inputs, and four1enclosures by channel if you use a T20-44 OR T10-44.
Other manufacturers’ power amplifiers may be used provided they are capable of
delivering the necessary power into the combined impedance of loudspeakers in use. Note that
many amplifiers suffer sonic degradation when driving low load impedances or, worse still, shut
down.
Always check your intended power amplifier’s specifications and conduct listening tests
before committing to a very low impedance system design.
The table below specifies the recommended minimum amplifier rating for the ALIS12
when used in pairs.

3.2 Recommended Speaker Cables
Choosing the right wire gauge for your installation is utmost importance to ensure you
will get the maximum potential of your system.
The two primary things resistance affects in the amplifier-to-loudspeaker connection
are: insertion loss and damping factor, both of which are dependent upon cable resistance. Too
small a cable section will increase both its serial resistance and its capacitance; this reduces the
electrical power delivered to the loudspeaker and can also induce response (damping factor)
variations.
INSERTION LOSS
Insertion loss is the measure of the loss of load power at the speaker due to excessive
resistive losses of the cable or any additional component attached between the amplifier and
the loudspeaker. We typically express this loss in decibels (dB) using the following formula:
20 log Rload
IL
Rload Rcable
= •
+
DAMPING FACTOR
Damping factor is a ratio of rated loudspeaker impedance (ZL) to the source impedance
(Zs). In this case our source impedance is (Rcable + Ramplifier).
Damping Factor = ZL/ZS

IMPORTANT
Long speaker cables induce capacitive effects – up to hundreds of pF depending on the
quality of the cable - with a low-pass effect on high frequencies. If long speaker cables
must be used, ensure that they do not remain coiled while in use.

4Loudspeaker Connection
Tecnare®Sound Systems recommended operating the ALIS loudspeaker together
Tecnare loudspeaker controllers.
Tecnare®only recommends using preset/amplifier developed by Tecnare; otherwise
there is a risk of damaging the loudspeaker components. DP Series Loudspeaker Controller, PA
Series amplifier and T-Series amplifier are ideal for this purpose.
Ensure that the right preset was selected before connecting the loudspeaker with the
amplifier.
Operating with an incorrect preset can damage part of the loudspeaker.
Ensure that the amplifier is properly size according to requirements. Under-power or
oversize power amplifier without the supervision of an expert may damage the
loudspeaker.
Please note the technical specification section.
