S fety W rnings
 Re d this m nu l c refully nd completely before inst lling nd using the TECNOWARE EXA LCD
Uninterruptible Power Supply, which, from here fter, will lso be referred to s UPS.
 This m nu l should be kept close to the UPS nd re d before the UPS is inst lled nd used.
 The UPS must be used only by properly tr ined personnel. To ensure correct nd s fe
oper tions, it is necess ry th t oper tors nd m inten nce personnel observe the gener l
s fety St nd rds s well s the specific instructions included in this m nu l.
 Risk of electric shock: do not remove the cover. The UPS cont ins intern l p rts, which re t
high Volt ge nd re potenti lly d ngerous, c p ble of c using injury or de th by electric
shock.
 There re no intern l p rts in the UPS, which re user service ble. Any rep ir or m inten nce
work must be performed exclusively by qu lified technic l personnel uthorized by
TECNOWARE. TECNOWARE declines ny responsibility if this w rning is disreg rded.
 W rning to the technic l personnel uthorized for Service: since intern l components re
connected to the b tteries, they will rem in powered, nd therefore d ngerous, even fter the
UPS h s been disconnected from AC power m ins. Before ny rep ir or m inten nce work,
disconnect the b tteries, by removing the positive c ble (red colour) from the positive pole of
the b ttery.
 It is compulsory to ground the UPS ccording to S fety St nd rds. The AC m ins power supply
socket used to power the UPS must h ve n e rth connection.
 In the event of AC m in power supply f ilure (when the UPS works in B ttery mode), do not
unplug the power supply c ble to the UPS to ensure e rth continuity to the connected lo ds.
 Since the AC m ins power supply c ble cts s sep r tion device, the AC m ins power socket
used to supply the UPS nd/or the re r side of the UPS must be ccessible to e sily disconnect
the c ble in c se of d ngerous conditions.
 Risk of electric shock t the Output lines when the UPS is ON.
 Risk of electric shock t the Output lines while the unit is connected to the AC utility line.
 Do not obstruct ventil tion slots or holes nd do not rest ny object on top of the UPS.

1Introduction
EXA LCD s a L ne Interact ve UPS (Un nterrupt ble Power Supply) spec f cally des gned to protect your computer
from any type of rregular t es n the AC l ne (such as black-outs, under or over voltages, m cro- nterrupt ons),
wh ch often cause damage to your Hardware and Software.
Under normal AC l ne cond t on, EXA LCD performs output voltage regulat on and f lters frequently occurr ng
electr cal d sturbances (such as trans ents, sp kes, nterferences, etc.), thus protect ng all dev ces connected to
the outlets, and recharg ng the batter es n an deal way. In case of anomaly to the AC l ne, the UPS cont nues
feed ng the protected equ pment.
EXA LCD s equ pped w th RS232 and USB nterface wh ch can be used to not fy a power fa lure or a low battery
cond t on d rectly to a computer: th s makes t poss ble to automat cally save your data dur ng an extended black-
out w th the most w despread operat ng systems (W ndows, Mac OS X, L nux, etc.).

This m nu l is guide th t en bles you to correctly inst ll nd use your EXA LCD. This
m nu l includes import nt SAFETY instructions for the oper tor, for the UPS correct
inst ll tion, nd gives useful dvice on the product nd b ttery m inten nce. For ny
type of problem, ple se refer to this m nu l before c lling the customer service.
EXA LCD s constantly be ng developed and mproved: consequently, your un t may d ffer somewhat from the
descr pt on conta ned n th s manual.

2Gener l Ch r cteristics
EXA LCD has all the advanced features, wh ch guarantee max mum rel ab l ty and safety:
•All funct ons are controlled by a m croprocessor, g v ng full guarantee of h gh rel ab l ty.
•Output Voltage regulat on through AVR (Automat c Voltage Regulat on).
•Overload protect on both n normal mode and n battery mode.
•H gh performance battery charger, wh ch extends the battery med um l fe ensur ng an opt mal recharge.

3Receipt nd site selection
Carefully remove the UPS from ts packag ng, and carry out a met culous nspect on. We recommend keep ng the
or g nal packag ng n a secure place, n case you need to send the UPS for ma ntenance purposes. In case of
transport damage, not fy the carr er and dealer mmed ately.
We recommend pay ng attent on to the below po nts n order to choose a correct placement for your UPS:
•The UPS s des gned to operate n a protected env ronment (e.g. off ces). We therefore recommend
nstall ng t n a place w th very l ttle or no hum d ty, dust or smoke.
•In all c rcumstances, see the “Techn cal Character st cs” chapter for env ronmental spec f cat ons and
check that the selected area meets these spec f cat ons.
•Dur ng normal operat on the UPS d scharges a m n mal amount of heat. So t s necessary to leave at least
20 cm of unobstructed space all around the UPS n order to keep t properly vent lated.
•Do not obstruct vent lat on holes.
•Do not nsert objects or pour l qu ds n the vent lat on holes.
•Do not rest any object on top of the UPS.
•Do not keep l qu ds, flammable gases or corros ve substances near the un t.
•Install the UPS on a properly t led floor. Avo d the nstallat on on a floor that s not t led flat.

4EXTERNAL DESCRIPTION
4.1 Front P nel
The front panel nforms the user about operat ng status, alarm cond t ons and measurements. Front panel shown
below cons sts of two parts:
1. LCD displ y prov des nformat on about Input and Output Voltage, Battery Level percentage, Load Level
percentage, funct on ng modes, alarm and fault cond t ons.
2. ON/OFF button: enables the user to turn ON/OFF the UPS.

In c se of nom ly to the AC line (bl ck-out), ONLY the UPS Output recept cles (bl ck
colour, #3) continue supplying the correct power to ll connected equipment. Ple se

5Electric l Inst ll tion nd First St rt Up
We adv se you to follow the steps below expla ned for greater safety:
1. Sw tch off all the dev ces (Personal Computer or other electron c dev ces) that need to be suppl ed by the
UPS.
2. Connect the UPS Input socket to the AC l ne outlet Through the Personal Computer supply ng cable. It is
m nd tory to ground the AC line outlet ccording to the S fety St nd rds. Carefully check the ground ng,
make sure that the ut l ty power s ava lable, and that ts range falls w th n the UPS spec f cat ons (refer to
the “Spec f cat ons” chapter).
3. Press the ON/OFF button on the front panel: the UPS em ts a br ef acoust c s gnal, turns the LCD d splay on,
and performs a functioning SELF-TEST. After some seconds the UPS starts to work n Norm l mode: the AC
MODE con s on. Leave the UPS n Normal mode for at least 4 hours n order to completely recharge the
batter es.
4. Sw tch the UPS off (by press ng aga n the ON/OFF button).
5. Connect the dev ces to be suppl ed to the UPS outputs, by us ng only the ncluded cables. Be sure all the
dev ces have the ma n sw tch n ON pos t on.
6. Turn on the UPS aga n. Check that t starts work ng correctly and t doesn’t s gnal any sort of anomaly.
Moreover be sure that all the dev ces connected to the UPS outputs are work ng correctly. By LCD d splay
check f the Output load percentage s less than 100%; otherw se t s necessary to remove part of the Output
load.
7. S mulate a black-out by remov ng the AC Input l ne. The UPS starts work ng n B ttery mode: the AC MODE
con s off and the BATTERY MODE con s on. Moreover the UPS em ts a br ef acoust c s gnal every 10 seconds.
8. Be sure that all the dev ces connected to the UPS outputs are work ng correctly and the UPS doesn’t s gnal
any sort of anomaly.
9. Restore the AC Input l ne: after few seconds the UPS turns back n Normal mode.
Before us ng EXA LCD normally, leave t n Normal mode n order to charge the batter es completely as spec f ed at
po nt 3. The batter es reach the 90% of the r capac ty after about 4 hours of recharge.
It is compulsory to ground/e rth the UPS ccording to the S fety St nd rds.
Risk of electric shock t the Output lines if the UPS is ON, even when the UPS is not
connected to AC utility line.

6Functioning
6.1 Norm l Mode
The UPS typ cally works n Norm l mode: Input ma ns power s ava lable and ts ampl tude s w th n spec f cat ons.
The Normal mode s dent f ed by the l ght ng of AC MODE con.
Dur ng Normal mode, the UPS recharges the batter es and keeps them n an opt mal charg ng voltage.
6.2 B ttery Mode
The UPS automat cally runs n B ttery mode f the AC Input L ne voltage ampl tude gets out of secur ty l m ts ( n
case of a black-out or over-voltage/low-voltage): n th s case, the UPS suppl es the requ red output power by ts
nternal battery and by the Inverter block.
The UPS automat cally returns n Normal mode a few seconds after the AC Input L ne s recovered.
The Battery mode s dent f ed by the l ght ng of BATTERY MODE con and by an acoust c s gnal every 10 seconds.
6.3 Low B ttery nd Autom tic Rest rt
In Battery mode, EXA LCD nd cates the Low B ttery cond t on whenever the battery reaches a charge level
allow ng connected dev ces to operate for approx mately one more m nute.
The UPS warns operators of Low B ttery by l ght ng of the LOW BATTERY con on the LCD d splay and by em tt ng
an acoust c s gnal every second.
If AC Input does not come back on w th n few m nutes, the UPS shuts-down utom tic lly thus prevent ng the
batter es from d scharg ng excess vely; the UPS stops supply ng Output power, deact vates control panel nd cat on
and goes to a wa t ng state. Once AC Input comes back on, the UPS rest rts utom tic lly and after some seconds
t goes back to work n Normal mode.
After a complete d scharge, the UPS needs 4 hours to recharge completely the batter es. The UPS recharges
batter es automat cally f t works n Normal mode or f t s off and connected to the AC Input L ne.

6.4 Lo d Control
The UPS nd cates the Output Load level by LCD d splay (on the r ght s de as descr bed n the chapter 4).
When the Output load s h gher than nom nal value the UPS warns of Overlo d condition by LCD d splay, by
l ght ng of the OVER LOAD con and by em tt ng a cont nuous acoust c alarm.
The UPS warns of an Overload less than 110% by acoust c alarm.
An Overload between 110% and 130% s accepted for about 30 seconds and after UPS sw tches automat cally off.
The UPS sw tches mmed ately off f the Overload s h gher than than 130%.
Once the requested power s back w th n range, the UPS sw tches automat cally to the Normal mode.
M ke sure th t the UPS never indic tes Overlo d condition.
Do not connect lo d gre ter th n r ted v lue to the UPS (see POWER specific tions in
the ch pter “Technic l Ch r cteristics”), s this m y d m ge the unit. In this c se the
w rr nty is void.
6.5 F ult Condition
The UPS nd cates the F ult condition by LCD d splay, by l ght ng of the F ult con and by em tt ng a cont nuous
acoust c alarm.
Dur ng Fault cond t on, the UPS doesn’t supply Output power and so all the suppl ed dev ces are sw tched off.
7Communic tion Interf ces
The UPS s factory-equ pped w th RS232 nd USB Communic tion Interf ces. On the UPS rear s de there are the
connectors of the Interfaces.
Only one of the RS232/USB commun cat ons can be act vated at one t me. To act vate RS232 commun cat on t s
suff c ent to connect the RS232 cable only; to act vate USB commun cat on t s suff c ent to connect the USB cable
only.
The RS-232 nd USB sign ls re ll isol ted through photo-couplers from the d ngerous volt ges th t re
present inside the UPS.

9M inten nce
9.1 UPS Cle ning
Before st rting ny cle ning oper tion, be sure th t:
1. The AC Input Volt ge for the UPS h s been removed.
2. The UPS is OFF.
Use only a cloth dampened w th water to clean the un t.
If UPS works n an env ronmental unusually dusty or d rty, remove the d rty from the vent lat on holes.
Before restart ng the UPS be sure t s completely dry. If any l qu d gets ns de the UPS, do not start the un t and
contact Techn cal Serv ce mmed ately.
9.2 B ttery
If the UPS s NOT go ng to be used for a long per od of t me, ensure that the batter es are left fully charged.
If the UPS has not been used for more than three months, go through the “F rst Start Up” procedure descr bed n
the chapter 5 before us ng t aga n.
Please keep n m nd that the batter es must be recharged at least once a month. Take n m nd that batter es are
recharged automat cally f the UPS works n Normal mode or f the UPS s off and connected to the AC Input L ne.
Battery l fe strongly depends on the amb ent temperature. There are also other factors l ke the number of charge-
d scharge cycles, the d scharge depth, hum d ty and alt tude.
The recommended env ronmental spec f cat ons for a correct use of batter es are l sted n the “Techn cal
Spec f cat ons” sect on.
9.3 B ttery Repl cement

Battery replacement must be performed exclus vely by qual f ed and author zed techn cal personnel. We adv se
you to follow the steps below expla ned for greater safety:
1. Turn the UPS off and d sconnect the AC Input L ne for the UPS.
2. Remove the front panel and then the battery cover.
3. D sconnect the battery w res and gently extract batter es from the case.
4. The new batter es must be exactly the same type as the or g nal one.
5. Put ns de the new batter es and connect them as the or g nal one.
6. Reassemble the battery cover and then the front panel.
B ttery repl cement must be performed exclusively by qu lified technic l personnel
uthorized by TECNOWARE. TECNOWARE declines ny responsibility if this w rning is
disreg rded.
When repl cing b tteries, repl ce with the s me type nd number.
CAUTION: A b ttery c n present risk of electric l shock nd high short circuit current.
The following prec utions should be observed when working on b tteries:
) Remove w tches, rings or other met l objects;
b) Use tools with insul ted h ndles;
c) We r rubber gloves nd boots;
d) Do not l y tools or met l p rts on top of b tteries;
e) Disconnect the ch rging source prior to connecting or disconnecting b ttery
termin ls;
f) Determine if b ttery is in dvertently grounded. If in dvertently grounded, remove
source from ground.
CAUTION: Do not dispose of b tteries in fire. The b tteries m y explode.
CAUTION: Do not open or mutil te b tteries. Rele sed electrolyte is h rmful to the skin
nd eyes. It m y be toxic.
9.4 Oper tor S fety
Whenever the UPS s not respond ng anymore to or g nal character st cs, the UPS must be made non-operat ve and
every usage not author sed must be avo ded. After t w ll be necessary to refer to qual f ed techn cal personnel.
Or g nal safety character st cs m ght not be f, for example, the UPS has v s ble damage or rregular operat on.

10 Troubleshooting

W rning to the technic l personnel uthorized for service: since intern l components
re connected to the b tteries, they will rem in powered, nd therefore d ngerous,
even fter the UPS h s been disconnected from AC power m ins. Before ny rep ir or
m inten nce work, disconnect the b tteries, by removing the positive c ble (red colour)
from the positive pole of the b ttery.

UPS EXA LCD cannot be disposed as an urban waste, but must be treated as a separate waste. Any
violation is indictable with financial sanctions as per in force regulations.
An incorrect waste disposal or an improper use of the same or of any parts can be damaging for the
environment and for human health.
A correct waste disposal of products having the dustbin symbol marked by a cross help to avoid
negative conse uences to the environment and to human health.

EXA LCD models contain lead acid, sealed, maintenance free batteries.
The batteries cannot be disposed as an urban waste, but must be treated in conformity with
2006/66/CE European Directive; any violation is indictable with financial sanctions as established into
2006/66/CE European Directive.
