Instrument Serial Numbers
Each instrument manufactured by Tektronix has a serial number on a panel insert or tag, or stamped on the
chassis. The first letter in the serial number designates the country of manufacture. The last five digits of the
serial number are assigned sequentially and are unique to each instrument. Those manufactured in the
United States have six unique digits. The country of manufacture is identified as follo s:

WARRANTY
Tektronix arrants that this product ill be free from defects in materials and orkmanship for a period of three (3) years from
the date of shipment. If any such product proves defective during this arranty period, Tektronix, at its option, either ill repair
the defective product ithout charge for parts and labor, or ill provide a replacement in exchange for the defective product.
In order to obtain service under this arranty, Customer must notify Tektronix of the defect before the expiration of the arranty
period and make suitable arrangements for the performance of service. Customer shall be responsible for packaging and
shipping the defective product to the service center designated by Tektronix, ith shipping charges prepaid. Tektronix shall
pay for the return of the product to Customer if the shipment is to a location ithin the country in hich the Tektronix service
center is located. Customer shall be responsible for paying all shipping charges, duties, taxes, and any other charges for
products returned to any other locations.
This arranty shall not apply to any defect, failure or damage caused by improper use or improper or inadequate maintenance
and care. Tektronix shall not be obligated to furnish service under this arranty a) to repair damage resulting from attempts by
personnel other than Tektronix representatives to install, repair or service the product; b) to repair damage resulting from
improper use or connection to incompatible equipment; or c) to service a product that has been modified or integrated ith
other products hen the effect of such modification or integration increases the time or difficulty of servicing the product.

This instruction manual provides operating and service information for the
TDS Family Option 13, RSĆ232/Centronics Hardcopy Interface. The informaĆ
tion contained here applies to the TDS 400, TDS 500, TDS 600, and
TDS 800 series digitizing oscilloscopes. This manual includes the follo ing

information applies to all operators and service personnel.

Observe all of these precautions to ensure your personal safety and to
prevent damage to either the digitizing oscilloscope or other connected
equipment.
Power Source
The digitizing oscilloscope operates from a po er source that ill not apply
more than 250 VRMS bet een the supply conductors or bet een either
supply conductor and ground. A protective ground connection, through the
grounding conductor in the po er cord, is essential for safe system operaĆ
tion.
Grounding the igitizing Oscilloscope
The digitizing oscilloscope is grounded through the po er cord. To avoid
electric shock, plug the po er cord into a properly ired receptacle here
earth ground has been verified by a qualified service person. Do this before
making connections to the input or output terminals of the digitizing oscilloĆ
scope.
Without the protective ground connection, all parts of the digitizing oscilloĆ
scope are potential shock hazards. This includes knobs and controls that
may appear to be insulators.
Use the Proper Power Cord
Use only the po er cord and connector specified for your product. Use only
a po er cord that is in good condition.
Use the Proper Fuse
To avoid fire hazard, use only the fuse specified in the parts list for your
product, matched by type, voltage rating, and current rating.
o Not Remove Covers or Panels
To avoid personal injury, do not operate the equipment ithout the panels or
covers.
Electric Overload
Never apply to a connector a voltage that is outside the range specified for
that connector.
o Not Operate in Explosive Atmospheres
This equipment provides no explosion protection from static discharges or
arcing components. Do not operate the digitizing oscilloscope in an atmoĆ
sphere of explosive gases.

o Not Service Alone
Do not perform internal service or adjustment of this product unless another
person capable of rendering first aid and resuscitation is present.
Use Care When Servicing With Power On
Dangerous voltages exist at several points in this product. To avoid personal
injury, do not touch exposed connections or components hile po er is on.
Disconnect po er before removing protective panels, soldering, or replacing
components.

Operating Information
This section provides operating information for the TDS Family Option 13,
RSĆ232/Centronics Hardcopy Interface. The follo ing subsections are
included:
HProduct Description gives a general description of the RSĆ232/CentronĆ
ics Hardcopy Interface and the basic hard are and firm are requireĆ
ments.
HBefore You Begin tells ho to run the internal diagnostic routine.
HHardcopy Setup tells ho to set RSĆ232 and Centronics hardcopy paĆ
rameters from the oscilloscope.
HCommunication, Hardware, and Software Setup contains procedures for
setting RSĆ232 communication, hard are, and soft are configurations
from the oscilloscope. There are no optional settings for Centronics.
HConnections contains basic steps for connecting the oscilloscope to the
printer or plotter.
HPrinting the Hardcopy tells ho to send the onĆscreen information to the
printer or plotter.
The TDS Family Option 13 adds Centronics and RSĆ232 hardcopy (talk only)
capability to the TDS Family of digitizing oscilloscopes. The option consists
of a single circuit board, its attached connectors, and rear panel labels.
The RSĆ232/Centronics Hardcopy Interface allo s you to make hard copies
of aveforms (and other onĆscreen information) to a variety of graphic
printers and plotters from the scope front panel.
To make this option ork, you must have both the RSĆ232/Centronics HardĆ
copy Interface hard are and Version 2.0 firm are (or future versions)
installed on the oscilloscope.
To ensure the hardcopy feature is orking properly, execute the internal
diagnostic routine by doing the follo ing steps:
1. Po er on the digitizing oscilloscope.
The oscilloscope automatically executes a short internal diagnostic
routine that checks oscilloscope functions. When finished, the oscilloĆ
scope displays an onĆscreen report of any failed modules or features.

2. If the hardcopy feature fails, refer to the Troubleshooting procedures
starting on page 2Ć3.
3. If no failures are reported, go to Hardcopy Setup.
Hardcopy parameters must be set up before you can make a hardcopy
through either the RSĆ232 or Centronics interface.
Setting Hardcopy Parameters
The Format menu lets you select the ay the oscilloscope formats the
hardcopy data.
1. Press SHIFT HAR COPY MENU  Format(main).
2. Select Thinkjet, eskjet, Laserjet, Epson, Interleaf, TIFF, PCX, BMP,
EPS Image, EPS Mono, and EPS Color or HPGL (side). Press
-more- (side) to see all choices. (See Figure 1Ć1.)
EPS Mono and Color (EPS stands for Encapsulated Postscript) formats
are compatible ith the Tektronix Phaser Color Printer, HPGL is compatĆ
ible ith the Tektronix HC100 Plotter (or equivalent), and Epson is comĆ
patible ith the Tektronix HC200 Printer (or equivalent dot matrix printer).

The Layout menu lets you specify landscape or portrait format for the hardĆ
copy.
Press SHIFT HAR COPY MENU  Layout (main)  Landscape or
Portrait (side) (see Figure 1Ć2).

The Port menu lets you choose the hardcopy output channel.
Press SHIFT HAR COPY MENU  Port (main)  RSĆ232 or Centronics
(side).
If you select RSĆ232 as the hardcopy port, you must also set the commuĆ
nication, hard are, and soft are parameters starting on page 1Ć5. If you
select Centronics as the hardcopy port, no further setup is required. ProĆ
ceed to Connections on page 1Ć7.

The follo ing communication, hard are, and soft are settings are only for
the RSĆ232 interface. No optional settings are offered for the Centronics
interface.

RSĆ232 Hardware Setup
The oscilloscope hard are settings must match the rearĆpanel parameter
s itch settings on the printer or plotter (see Connections on page 1Ć7).
1. Press SHIFT UTILITY  Port (main)  RSĆ232 (popĆup) 
Hardware Setup (main) (see Figure 1Ć4).
2. Press Baud Rate (side)  and toggle to select 300, 600, 1200, 2400,
4800, 9600, or 19200. You can also use the general purpose knob (or
the keypad, if available) to enter a selection.
3. Press Stop Bits (side)  and toggle to select 1 or 2. You can also use
the general purpose knob or the keypad to enter a selection.
4. Press Parity (side) and toggle to select Even, Odd or None.
5. Press Hard Flagging (side) and toggle to select ON or OFF.
