T ere is not ing complicated about operating and maintaining your T ermo
King unit, but a few minutes studying t is manual will be time well spent.
Performing pre-trip c ecks and enroute inspections on a regular basis will
minimize operating problems. A regular maintenance program will also elp
to keep your unit in top operating condition. If factory recommended
procedures are followed, you will find t at you ave purc ased t e most
efficient and dependable temperature control system available.
All service requirements, major and minor, s ould be andled by a T ermo
King dealer for four very important reasons:
• T ey are equipped wit t e factory recommended tools to perform all
service functions.
• T ey ave factory trained and certified tec nicians.
• T ey ave genuine T ermo King replacement parts.
• T e warranty on your new unit is valid only w en t e repair and
replacement of component parts is performed by an aut orized T ermo
King dealer.

Exposed coil fins can cause lacerations. Service work on t e evaporator or
condenser coils is best left to a certified T ermo King tec nician.
Auto Start/Stop

T e unit can start and run automatically any time t e unit is turned on. Turn
t e unit On/Off switc Off before doing inspections or working on any part
of t e unit. Please note t at only Qualified and Certified personnel s ould
attempt to service your T ermo King unit.

RRiisskk ooff IInnjjuurryy!!
Some ve icles may be equipped wit an Auto Start-Stop feature allowing
t e engine to restart automatically if required by t e system. Refer to your
ve icle’s operator’s manual regarding t e Auto Start-Stop safety warnings
before accessing t e engine compartment. Failure to do so may result in
serious injuries due to automatic engine restart.
Electrical Hazar s

Do not connect ot er manufacturer’s equipment or accessories to t e unit
unless approved by T ermo King. Failure to do so can result in severe
damage to equipment and void t e warranty.
Refrigerant Hazar s
Alt oug fluorocarbon refrigerants (R-404A/R-452A and R-134a) are
classified as safe, observe caution w en working wit refrigerants or around
areas w ere t ey are being used in t e servicing of your unit.

produces toxic gases t at are severe respiratory irritants w ic can cause

Do not in ale refrigerant. Use caution w en working wit refrigerant or a
refrigeration system in any confined area wit a limited air supply.
Refrigerant displaces air and can cause oxygen depletion, resulting in
suffocation and possible deat .

Refrigerant in a liquid state evaporates rapidly w en exposed to t e
atmosp ere, freezing anyt ing it contacts. Wear butyl lined gloves and
ot er clot ing and eye wear w en andling refrigerant to elp prevent
frostbite.

Observe t e following w en working wit or around refrigerant oil.

Protect your eyes from contact wit refrigerant oil. T e oil can cause serious
eye injuries. Protect skin and clot ing from prolonged or repeated contact
wit refrigerant oil. To prevent irritation, was your ands and clot ing
t oroug ly after andling t e oil. Rubber gloves are recommended.

•EEyyeess:: For contact wit liquid, immediately flus eyes wit large amounts
of water and get prompt medical attention.
•SSkkiinn:: Flus area wit large amounts of warm water. Do not apply eat.
Remove contaminated clot ing and s oes. Wrap burns wit dry, sterile,

bulky dressing to protect from infection. Get prompt medical attention.
Was contaminated clot ing before reuse.

breat ing, if necessary. Stay wit victim until emergency personnel
arrive.
•FFrroosstt BBiittee:: In t e event of frost bite , t e objectives of First Aid are to
protect t e frozen area from furt er injury, warm t e affected area
rapidly, and to maintain respiration.

•EEyyeess:: Immediately flus wit large amounts of water for at least 15
minutes. Get prompt medical attention.
•SSkkiinn:: Remove contaminated clot ing. Was t oroug ly wit soap and
water. Get medical attention if irritation persists.

Resuscitation (CPR) or mout -to-mout resuscitation to restore

Take IMMEDIATE action after a person as received an electrical s ock. Get
quick medical assistance, if possible.
T e source of t e s ock must be quickly stopped, by eit er s utting off t e
power or removing t e victim. If t e power cannot be s ut off, t e wire
s ould be cut wit an non-conductive tool, suc as a wood- andle axe or
t ickly insulated cable cutters. Rescuers s ould wear insulated gloves and

safety glasses, and avoid looking at wires being cut. T e ensuing flas can
cause burns and blindness.
If t e victim must be removed from a live circuit, pull t e victim away wit a
non-conductive material. Use wood, rope, a belt or coat to pull or pus t e
victim away from t e current. DO NOT TOUCH t e victim. You will receive a
s ock from current flowing t roug t e victim’s body. After separating t e
victim from power source, immediately c eck for signs of a pulse and
respiration. If no pulse is present, start Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
(CPR). If a pulse is present, respiration mig t be restored by using mout -to-
mout resuscitation. Call for emergency medical assistance.
AASSPPHHYYXXIIAATTIIOONN
Move victim to fres air and use Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or
mout -to-mout resuscitation to restore breat ing, if necessary. Stay wit
victim until emergency personnel arrive.

Unit Description
Intro uction
T ermo King V-520 refrigeration systems are designed for medium-sized
trucks and vans transporting fres , frozen, and deep frozen goods.
T e condenser for a RT (roof top) unit is located on t e roof top of t e
ve icle. T e condenser on a NM (nose mount) unit is located on t e front
nose of t e cargo box. T e evaporator is mounted on t e cargo
compartment ceiling. SPECTRUM®units ave an evaporator in eac
temperature controlled compartment.
A belt driven compressor running off t e ve icle’s engine operates t e
refrigeration system during mobile operation. SmartPower™models ave a
second compressor located inside t e condenser. T is compressor is belt
driven off an electric motor w en connected to an AC power source during
stationary operation.
T e user friendly Direct Smart Reefer (DSR) controller makes operating your
unit simple, w ile its design allows for ease of service.
T e operating mode is selected automatically: W en t e unit is connected to
an electric power source, engine-driven operation is automatically blocked. If
t e ve icle engine is started up w ile t e power cable is still connected to
t e electric power source, t e unit will continue to operate in electric standby
mode. It is not possible to start t e engine-driven compressor until t e
power cable is disconnected from t e unit.

operation.
•MMooddeell 2200: Cool and defrost on bot truck engine driven compressor
operation and electric standby compressor operation.
•MMooddeell 3300: Cool, eat, and defrost on truck engine driven compressor

•MMooddeell 5500: Cool, eat, and defrost on bot ve icle engine driven
compressor operation and electric standby compressor operation.
•MMAAXX: For deep frozen applications.

System Components
T e system consists of t e following main components:
Con enser
Depending on your model, t e condenser will be located eit er on t e roof
of t e ve icle or on t e front of t e cargo box.
• V-520 RT 10 and 30 models are made up of two modules: condenser
module and a refrigeration module.
• V-520 RT 20 and 50 models are made up of t ree modules: condenser
module, refrigeration module and a electric standby module.
• V-520 nose mount models consist of a single one piece condenser.
T e condenser cover(s) can easily be removed to access t e fuses or service
t e unit.

In-Cab Controller

Never operate t e unit unless you completely understand t e controls;
ot erwise serious injury may occur.
T e Direct Smart Reefer (DSR) Controller is mounted in t e ve icle cab and
is used to operate t e refrigeration unit. Refer to Operating Instructions
(“Introduction,” p. 20).

A certified electrician s ould verify t at t e proper standby power
requirements are being supplied before connecting to a new power source.
T ese units may be operated in electric standby mode by connecting t e
proper voltage power cable to t e unit’s power receptacle mounted on t e
ve icle. Standby operation is used w ile t e ve icle is stationary wit t e
engine s ut off.

Electrical System
T e unit’s controls and refrigeration components operate on 12 Vdc.
SmartPower units ave a standby motor t at operates on 115 or 230 Vac
w en connected to a remote power source. A transformer in t e condenser
unit converts t e 115 or 230 Vac to 12 Vdc to operate t e unit’s controls and
refrigeration components.
Fuses
T e electrical components are protected by various fuses.
MMaaiinn PPoowweerr FFuussee - T e main power fuse is located in t e ve icle’s engine
compartment and is connected directly to t e ve icle’s battery.
IIggnniittiioonn PPoowweerr FFuussee - T e ignition power fuse is connected to t e ve icle’s
fused ignition system. Depending on t e ve icle, t e location of t e fuse
panel could be located inside t e cab or under t e ood of t e ve icle.

Operating Instructions
Intro uction
In ve icle powered units, temperature control is based on two values: T e
setting (Setpoint) of t e controller and t e evaporator return air temperature.
T e difference between t ese two temperatures will determine t e mode of
operation: cool, eat, or null.
CCooooll:: W en t e temperature in t e compartment is 3°F (2°C) hhiigghheerr t an t e
setpoint, t e unit runs in cool mode to reduce t e evaporator return
temperature to ac ieve t e setpoint.
HHeeaatt:: W en t e temperature in t e compartment is 3°F (2°C) lloowweerr t an t e
setpoint, t e unit c anges to eat mode to raise t e evaporator return
temperature to ac ieve t e setpoint.
NNuullll:: Once t e Setpoint Temperature as been reac ed, and t e
temperature remains at or wit in t e temperature differential, (t ere is no
demand for eat or cool), t e unit stops operating and goes into t e Null
mode.
W ile in t e Null mode, t e unit is still monitoring t e compartment
temperature and will resume operation only if t e temperature increases or
decrease by 3°F (2°C) above or below t e setpoint.
DDeeffrroosstt:: After a period of time in cool mode, (time is setup during
installation between 0 and 8 ours), t e unit c ecks t e coil temperature. If
t e temperature is cold enoug to form ice, t e unit runs in automatic
Defrost Mode to eliminate ice t at as accumulated in t e evaporator coil.
Defrost can also be initiated manually by selecting t e defrost mode on t e
DSR controller. T e unit will run in defrost until one of t e two events occurs:
1) t e coil temperature is back wit in range, or 2) t e defrost termination
timer as expired. (time is setup during installation).
NNoottee:: The return air temperature will increase slightly while in defrost,
however it will quickly return to the desired setpoint after completion
of the defrost cycle.
