Electrical warning When using this device with an AC adapter (100-240V AC – 5V DC),
always use the specific adapter provided by your supplier (same brand, same
product reference). Do not open the adapter yourself and do not dismantle

contain any user-reparable parts. If the adapter shows any sign of
malfunction, unplug it immediately and contact Thermo Fisher Scientific

Introduction Congratulations and thank you for choosing the Thermo Scientific wireless
siren end-point module. This guide describes how to get your new wireless
siren up and running quickly as part of your Smart-Vue™wireless
monitoring system.
Detailed configuration instructions and software settings are provided in the
complete Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Software User Manual provided with
your system software.

Product overview The Thermo Scientific wireless siren is an AC-powered wireless end-point
module with siren and flashing light. It is easy to set up in Smart-Vue Client
software.
Main features • Siren volume output from 60 to 100 dBA (+/- 10%)
• Wireless range up to 200 meters (650 ft) in open space, from 8 meters
(26 ft) to 30 meters (98 ft) indoors, and up to 120 meters (390 ft)
indoors with 3 repeaters
• Operating temperature range: 0°C to +50°C

What is a Smart-Vue
wireless end-point
module?
Thermo Scientific wireless siren end-point modules are used to raise alerts if
alarm conditions are detected in your Smart-Vue wireless monitoring
system. Alarms can be configured in the Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue
Client software for any or all of your end-point modules and groups.
For example, you can configure a Smart-Vue temperature monitoring
end-point module to trigger an alarm if the temperature exceeds or drops
below a specified limit. The alarm limits and values depend on the type of
Smart-Vue end-point module you are using. The siren is triggered when an
alarm is detected by the software.

Typical installation Thermo Scientific sirens connect wirelessly to one or more wireless receivers,
just as the other wireless modules in your network:

The computer running the monitoring system software triggers the siren
wirelessly when it detects an alarm condition in an end-point module or
repeater.
Note: A given receiver can trigger several different sirens, and multiple
receivers can trigger the same siren.

Requirements and
recommendations
For the purposes of this installation guide we assume that:
• Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software is installed and configured
on your computer, and you have appropriate access rights to configure
devices in the system.
• A Thermo Scientific receiver is installed and functioning on your
computer or network.
General requirements and
recommendations
• The personal computer (PC) running Smart-Vue Server software runs
continuously, 24/7/365, and should be connected to an Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS) that protects against power surges and provides
power to back up the PC and components.
• The AC adapter used for your serial receiver (if applicable) should also
be plugged into a UPS.
• A UPS is also recommended as a power backup for your
communication/network systems.
• Weekly manual system testing (e.g., remove a sensor to verify the
communications system is working) should be performed as defined in
your Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
• Recommended maintenance procedures should be followed. Contact
your local sales representative for more information.
• If you are storing cold products, Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends
use of a back-up cooling system (e.g., CO2or LN2) to maintain freezer
chamber temperature below the critical level should a power failure
occur. Contact your local sales representative for more information.
• Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends Installation and Operational
Qualifications (IQ/OQ) be performed before initial use. Contact your
local sales representative for more information.
• For timely notification of an emergency/alarm, it is critical to establish
primary, secondary and tertiary call-out procedures with escalation so
contact is not dependent on reaching one individual. Ideally, ultimate
contact is with a security department or company with 24/7
monitoring.
• Please see the relevant documentation for more details on installing
Smart-Vue receivers and Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software.

Installation procedure The procedure described here assumes that Smart-Vue Server/ Smart-Vue
Client software is installed on your computer, and that your Thermo
Scientific wireless receiver is configured and ready to use.
Placing your Thermo
Scientific siren for best
wireless performance
For optimal operation, follow these recommendations when physically
placing your device:
• Do not place the siren within 40 cm (16 in.) of another end-point
module or wireless device.
• Make sure the wireless end-point module is not placed on an electrical
conduit or cable tray (such as for computer network cables).
• For best results, place the end-point module so that it faces the general
direction of the receiver antenna if possible.
• Keep about 20 cm (8 in.) of clear space around the end-point module.
For example, a end-point module that is “stuck” between two
refrigerators may not communicate effectively.
• Place your siren in a relatively high location on a wall where people will
not bump or unplug it (e.g., about 2 meters (6.5 ft.) from the floor).
• To ensure that the AC adapter does not get unplugged accidently, use a
power socket that is also elevated from the floor and/or shield the cord
in a protective conduit that is fixed to the wall (or within the wall).
• The siren is a critical device in your wireless monitoring system.
Therefore, we recommend that you keep it plugged it into an
Uninterruptible Power Supply or safety plug.
• See Appendix ref on pg.14 for additional considerations.

Installing the wireless siren 1. For strong adhesion, wipe and dry the back of the siren and the wall
where you intend to place the unit.
2. Attach one side of the Velcro tape to the back of the siren and the
other on the wall where you intend to place the unit.
3. Place the siren on the wall using the Velcro.
4. Plug the DC adapter into the siren as shown below. The plug should
click firmly into the socket on the siren.

Note: If you have to remove this plug from the siren, pull gently so you do
not damage the unit or plug.

This section describes how to add a wireless siren to your Smart-Vue Client
monitoring system and test it. Enter your login name and password
whenever prompted.
Adding the wireless siren
(alerts) to your system
1. Launch Smart-Vue Client on your computer and enter your login
name and password to continue.
2. Select Settings ==> Alert settings ( ), or press F8. Alerts are
configured for either groups or receivers.
Note: Make sure that your Windows system is configured to use the default
Date/Time settings for your region.
3. To configure an alert, click on the desired group or receiver, and
then click to select the checkbox Audio unit … Wireless siren.

4. Depending on when you wish to use this siren, click on the plus sign
(+) next to Day, Night or WE (weekend) in the lower right-hand part
of the screen.

5. Select the Receiver that is used to connect to the siren (“local” in
Figure 5 below.

6. In the Siren serial # field, enter the wireless address printed on the
label on the siren, then click on Power. The signal power level must
be 30% or higher to ensure reliable communications. If this signal
level is below 30%, you may need to use repeaters to cover the range
between your receiver and the siren reliably.
7. Click on Add ==>OK (select)==>OK to confirm addition of the new
siren.
At this point the siren is up and running, ready to react if an alarm
condition is detected on any end-point module in the specified group or
receiver.
Sirens function independently of other alerts, such as telephone, fax and
SMS alerts. Therefore, you do not have to configure Call Groups if you
intend to use siren alerts only.

Creating alarms To set an alarm for a sensor that is configured and working correctly, do the
following, entering your login and password when prompted:
1. Launch Smart-Vue Client on your computer and enter your login
name and password to continue.
2. Select Settings ==> Sensor settings ( ), or press F11.
3. In the left-hand column, select the sensor for which you wish to
set alarms (e.g., “Temperature”).
4. Click on the Alarm settings tab.
5. Set high and low alarm limits and the pre-alarm values.
6. For both high and low alarm conditions, set the delay to wait
before an alarm is sent.

7. Click on Close ==> Yes ==> OK to confirm your changes.

Testing the siren This section describes how to run a sample test after adding the siren to your
system as described in the previous sections. The test procedure described
here generates a false alert with a time/date stamp of 12/30/1899 at 00:00 so
you can identify these events as tests easily. Also, they are not recorded in the
alarm log.
To test your siren, along with all other alerts you may have configured (fax,
SMS, e-mail, etc.), do the following. Enter your login and password when
prompted.
1. In Smart-Vue Client, select the Tools tab and then click on Alert test
( ).
2. Enter your login name and password to continue.
3. In the Alert test window, select the receiver or sensor you wish to
check. Groups (such as “Group 1” and “Lab1” in Figure 7) are not
tested.

4. From the Select remote to be tested pick-list to choose the type of
alarm you wish to test (e.g., “High limit alarm” set in Error! Not a
valid link.
5. Click on Test ==> Close.
6. Click on the Alarms label in the lower left-hand corner of the main
screen to view the alarms zone. Within a few seconds, the test alarm
will appear in the alarms zone.

The siren, as well as all other alerts configured for the receiver and/or sensor
in question, turn on within a few moments. This is a good way to test the
entire alert process in your wireless monitoring system.
7. Click on the red siren icon ( ) to turn off the alarm.
8. Click on the red exclamation point icon ( ) to acknowledge the
alarm and clear it from the alarm list.
9. Complete the fields (e.g., cause of incident, corrective action) on the
Alarm Acknowledgement screen and click on OK.

Troubleshooting If you are having difficulties with your configuration, take a look at these
frequently asked questions before contacting technical support.
I clicked on the Test button on the Alarm test screen, but nothing
happens. What should I do? Make sure the alarm service is running on the
Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client computer. The Smart-Vue Server
Alarm Management System icon ( ) must be present in the Windows
task bar. Next, make sure the unit is plugged in correctly to the AC power
adapter and that the adapter is plugged into a live outlet.
Will these alarms be recorded in my alarm history? No. Test alarms act like
real alarms, but they have a time/date stamp of 12/30/1899 at 00:00 so you
can identify these events as tests easily. Also, they are not recorded in the
alarm log.
What kinds of end-point module alarms trigger the siren? Sirens are
triggered when Smart-Vue Client software detects an alarm condition of any
kind from a sensor or repeater. This includes technical alarms (i.e., low
battery, sensor failure, wireless communication failure) and “limit” alarms
(i.e., readings exceed high or low limits specified in the software).
I moved my siren. Why doesn’t it work anymore? First, make sure the unit
is plugged in correctly to the AC power adapter and that the adapter is
plugged into a live outlet. Also, due to its casing, the wireless range on the
siren is about half that of the Smart-Vue end-point modules and repeaters.
Make sure your device is still within wireless range by running a signal
strength test in Smart-Vue Client (press F8 or click on Alarms). Click on the
plus (+) sign, click on the siren you wish to check, and click on Power.
Is it OK for the signal strength to be 25% for my siren? No. The signal for
each device must show a value higher than 30% when you click on the
Power button in Smart-Vue Client. Higher values are better.
