CHOOSERIGHTCUTTINGHEIGHT
1.Ingeneralusethesamecuttingheightyouhave
usedbefore.Youknowwhatheightisbestforyour
ownlawn.

Whenfirstusingyourmower,cutthegrassa
littlelongerthanyoudidbeforeuntilyouaresurethat
thegreatercuttingwidthwillnotcausescalpingdueto
irregularitiesinthelawn.
3.
Ifthegrassishigh,orifitcontainslotsof
moisture,takea firstcutwiththebladessethigh.
Thenfinishcuttingwiththelowerbladesetting.This
givesbetterdistributionoftheclippingsandprovides
acleanersecondcut.
4.
Itispossible,byusingcare,tocutgrassthat
isextremelyhighorwet.Setthebladesattheirhighest
position,andusethelowestdrivespeed.Moveinto
theareacautiously.Takea cut,ifnecessary,only
halfthewidthofthemowerateachpass.Wetclippings
mayclogthemowerhousing,causingthebladetostall
andthebeltstoslipandwear.Ifthishappensitwill
benecessarytostopandcleanthedischarge.Besure
tostoptheengine._
HOWTOSETCUTTINGHEIGHT
1.Theheightofcutisveryeasilysetorchanged
byusingthehandleprovidedasillustrated.Theblades
maybesetat2,2-1/2,3,3-1/2,and4 inches.

Tolowertheblades,placeyourrightthumb
ontopofthehandlever,releasethepressureandthe
entiremowerhousingwilldropslightly.Youcannow
setthemowingheightinthepositionthatyouwant.
Eachtimeyoumovefromonepositiontoanotherin
theleverengagingplatethebladesraiseordrop1/2-
inch.

Itmaybenecessarytoadjusttheleveling
wheels,whicharea partofthemowerattachment,
whenthecuttingattachmentisloweredtothe2 and
2-1/2inchcuttingpositionstopreventscalping.The
levelingwheelsshouldbeinthetopholeofthewheel
bracketatthe2 inchcuttingheightpositionandinthe
bottomholewhenoperatingthemowerattachmentat
2-1/2inchesandhigher.
CAUTION
Besureengineisstoppedbeforeadjustingpo-
sitionoflevelingwheels.
USECORRECTSPEED
1.Uselowgearforpullingheavy
loads,
formow-
inginhighgrassandformowingwhileclimbinghills.
ThisallowsthebladestomaintainconstantRPM,and
deliversmostofthehorsepowertotheblades.Low
gearalsogivesyoumaximumcontrolwhiletrimming.
2.
Usesecondgearformowinglevelareasand
forclimbinghillswhenyouarenotusingtheblades.
Ifsecondgearresultsinunevenmowingduetothe
conditionofthegrass,shifttolowgear.
3.
Highgeargivesa speedofaboutsixmilesper
hourona levelhardsurface.Useitfortransporting
thetractortoandfromwork.Mowinginhighgear
willbeunevenbecauseatthisspeedthebladesdonot
havetimetolifteachbladeofgrassintocuttingposi-
tion.Inaddition,somuchoftheengine'shorsepower
isabsorbedinforwardmotionthatitiscomparatively
easytostalltheblade.
4.
Slowdownonturnstoavoidslidingsideways.
5.
Reverseisjustalittleslowerthansecondgear.
Themowerwillcutequallywellineitherforwardor
reverse.
6.Toavoidjerky
starts,
releasetheclutchpedal
slowlyaftershifting.
SAVEMOWINGTIMEWITHPLANNING
1.Changingdirectionwastestime.Plantokeep
themowermovingforwardasmuchaspossible.(See
figure6.)

Planforthelongeststraightrunspossible.

Saveclosetrimmingforthecleanup.

Trytoworkwiththeclippingsdischargingon
tothealreadycutareas,topreventbuild-upofclip-
pingswhichcouldimposeanextraloadontheblade,
orcauseunevenmowingbecausetheypreventthegrass
fromrisingintothecuttingpathoftheblade.
5.
Sometimesit'seasiertodividea largerirreg-
ularshapedareaintosmallersectionstokeepthe
mowerworkingmoresteadily,ortokeepfrombacking,
turningorrepeatingtoooften.
6.Inasmallarea,wheretightturnswouldcause
losttimeinthecenterifthenormalroundandround
methodswereused,trythecuttingmethodshownin
theillustration(figure6).Makethesecondpassdown
thecenterofthearea,ratherthandowntheopposite
sidefromthefirstpass.Thisallowsyoutoswing
wideattheendofeachpass,andstillcutallofthe
grasswithouttoomuchreversing.
7.
Trytoavoidsteephills.Thetractorwillnor-
mallycarrya200poundoperatorupa 30°gradewhile
cuttinggrass.
OBSERVETRACTORLIMITS
Observingthelimitsofthetractorandmowerwill
helpitserveyoulonger.Overloadandmistreatment
canshortenitslifeorimpairitsusefulness,justas
theycanwithanytoolormachine.
