Information on the installation manual
This manual enables operating or service personnel
to correctly install the product described below and
to use it safely and efficiently.
It is essential that these individuals read and fully
understand this manual before starting any work.
The basic prerequisite for safe working is to comply
with the safety notes and all instructions in this
manual.
The local regulations for health and safety at work
and general safety regulations also apply.
Safety
Correct use
Splitter sound attenuators and sound attenuator
splitters are used to reduce fan and air-generated
noise in ventilation and air-conditioning systems,
e.g., in AHUs or ducts.
Use in potentially explosive atmos-
pheres according to EU Directive 2014/34/EU
(ATEX)
Splitter sound attenuators of the types XS and
MS, as well as sound attenuator splitters of the
types XK, MK and RK, may be used in Ex-areas
of zone 1, 2 and zone 21, 22 (outside) according
to Directive 1999/92/EC.
Observe the following instructions for use:
–Maximum operating temperature 100 °C
–Maximum airflow velocity up to 20 m/s
–Electrically connect the sound attenuator
splitter with the casing.
–Earth the splitter sound attenuator!
–To prevent dust deposits, clean sound
attenuators and splitters regularly!
–When cleaning, ensure that the sound
attenuator / sound attenuator splitter does
not become statically charged!

Incorrect use
WARNING!
Danger of injury or risk of damage to property
due to incorrect use!
Misuse of the splitter sound attenuator can lead
to dangerous situations.
Never use splitter sound attenuators:
– outdoors without sufficient protection against
the effects of weather
– in rooms and systems with aggressive air
(individual testing required)
– in processing plants
Modifying the product or using replacement parts
that have not been approved by TROX is not per-
mitted.
Staff
Qualification
The work described in this manual has to be carried
out by individuals with the qualification, training,
knowledge and experience described below:
HVAC technician
HVAC technicians are individuals who have suffi-
cient professional or technical training in the field
they are working in to enable them to carry out their
assigned duties at the level of responsibility allo-
cated to them and in compliance with the relevant
guidelines, safety regulations and instructions.
HVAC technicians are individuals who have in-
depth knowledge and skills related to HVAC sys-
tems; they are also responsible for the professional
completion of the work under consideration.
HVAC technicians are individuals who have suffi-
cient professional or technical training, knowledge
and actual experience to enable them to work on
HVAC systems, understand any potential hazards
related to the work under consideration, and recog-
nise and avoid any risks involved.
Personal protective equipment
Personal protective equipment is equipment that
protects the user against health or safety risks at
work.
Personal protective equipment must be worn for
various types of work; the protective equipment
required is listed in this manual together with the
description of each type of work.
Description of personal protective equipment
Industrial safety helmet
Industrial safety helmets protect the head from
falling objects, suspended loads, and the effects of
striking the head against stationary objects.
Protective gloves
Protective gloves protect hands from friction, abra-
sions, punctures, deep cuts, and direct contact with
hot surfaces.
Safety shoes
Safety shoes protect the feet against crushing,
falling parts, and from slipping on slippery ground.
Repair and replacement parts
Only qualified personnel can repair the products,
and only genuine replacement parts are allowed to
be used.

Transport, storage and packaging
Delivery check
Check delivered items immediately after arrival for
transport damage and completeness. In case of any
damage or an incomplete shipment, contact the
shipping company and your supplier immediately.
Transport on site
Please note:
Be careful when unloading or moving the
product, and pay attention to the symbols and
information on the packaging.
If possible, take the product in its transport
packaging up to the installation location.
Use only lifting and transport gear designed for
the required load.
Always secure the load against tipping and
falling.
Do not move bulky products just by yourself.
Get help to prevent injuries and damage.

Installation should be vertical and without tor-
sion
Duct connection on both sides, any airflow
direction
Installation in ducts outside closed rooms
requires sufficient protection against the effects
of weather
The length (L) fundamentally refers to the air-
flow direction.
Assembly material is not included in the supply
package unless explicitly mentioned

Upstream section
NOTICE!
Damage due to turbulent airflow!
If a turbulent flow occurs at the sound attenuator,
this can lead to damage of the sound attenuator
splitter.
Therefore, a straight upstream section must be
provided in the airflow direction upstream of the
sound attenuator.
The minimum recommended upstream section is
calculated depending on the change of direction,
cross-section change and splitter arrangement;
see Figures Fig. 5 – Fig. 8

Installation details for splitter sound attenuators
types MS and XS
Suspension

When installing the sound attenuator horizon-
tally, choose a load-bearing construction that
supports the entire width of the casing (B). Two
full-surface contact points per component are
to be provided.
The sound attenuator must not be installed
exclusively vertically on the duct profiles or ver-
tically in the airflow direction.
Flanges and connection
The flange must be connected to the duct system at
all connection points using suitable connecting
material. Flanges have four connecting holes, one
per angle. The angle section frame (W) has a dif-
ferent number of connecting holes depending on
the dimensions. Suitable matching frames are avail-
able in the TROX delivery programme and are
screwed to the sound attenuator, if ordered. When
connecting the splitter sound attenuator to the duct
system, a seal/sealing kit (by others) must be pro-
vided.

Pay attention to H or B subdivision. Take non-subdi-
vided angles according to Fig. 12 or 13 into consid-
eration.

Matching frame
Detach the matching frame from the sound attenu-
ator. Install the matching frame to the duct (pro-
vided by others) using suitable fixing material. Fix
cover angles (provided by others) to reduce frame
leakage. Recommended dimensions for cover
angle: total length = B - 17 mm, leg length of angle
10 x 30 mm.

Subdivided splitter sound attenuators (MS, XS)
Splitter sound attenuators with a duct casing are
supplied in one piece up to a length of 1500 mm.
Longer constructions (L >1500 mm to 3000 mm)
are supplied in two segments, which must be
installed by others. In the process, a seal must be
provided between the two parts (not included in the
supply package).
For type MS with length subdivision, make sure that
the splitters are arranged correctly

In addition to the length subdivision, subdivisions in
width (B) and/or height (H) are possible. Each
measurement can be subdivided only once. Splitter
sound attenuators with width and/or height subdivi-
sion are constructed with angle section frames (W).
Width subdivision - B >2400 mm to 4800 mm
Height subdivision - H >1800 mm to 3600 mm.
Before assembling height- and/or width-subdivided
splitter sound attenuators, remove the transport
protection devices (unperforated).

Join the unprofiled sides of the casing together.
Connect the angle section frames with one screw
connection (supply package) per adjacent angle
section frame.
The screw connection is supplied in drawstring bag
and includes, for each connection:
1 units - Hexagon head screw M8x25 8.8 A2J
1 units - Hexagon nuts M8-8 A2J
2 units - Washers for M8

Fit the sealing profiles (supply package) over each
of the two unprofiled casing sides.
Supplementary installation details for splitter
sound attenuators types MS-OL and XS-OL
Splitter sound attenuators without a casing are
called splitter installation kits (OL).
According to the order code, the installation kit con-
tains a certain number of splitters that can be
installed in rectangular ducts (provided by others)
with smooth plane-parallel walls.

Arrangement of the splinters:
Install the splitters parallel at a defined distance
(S = gap dimension) to each other. Splitters of the
same length L are arranged parallel next to each
other.

Gap dimension S formula
The gap dimension between two splitters can
be determined from the clear width of the duct.
The edge gap of the outer splitter to the duct is
to be taken into account with S/2.

S=(B - n x T)/n
Recommended:
S min =0.25 x T; min. 40 mm
S max = 2 x T
Arrangement of resonating panels:
Splitter sets of the type MS-OL and MK have reso-
nating panels, as well as surfaces with faced sound
absorbing material, which must face each other dif-
ferently depending on the splitter thickness.

In addition, please note:
The order dimension (H) corresponds to the
clear height of the duct.
The length of the duct must be at least equal to
the sum of the individual splitters (L).
Only arrange splitters of the same length (L)
next to and above each other.
The arrangement of the resonating panels
(Fig. 21,Fig. 22) is to be maintained / repeated
over the entire length.
Any subdivision of the splitter must be carried
out in accordance with
Ä Chapter 5.5 ‘Subdi-
vided sound attenuator splitter types MK, RK
and XK’ on page 13.
The splitters are to be fixed/aligned in/on the
duct with suitable material Fig. 25.
The air must flow through the sound attenuator
parallel to the splitter length L, splitter height H
and splitter length L must not be interchanged.
Keep the gap widths the same over the entire
surface of the splitters.
– Increase in gap width: insertion loss is
reduced.
– Decrease in gap width: increase of pres-
sure loss and air-generated noise.
A staggered splitter arrangement in length is
not permitted and can lead to damage within
the ventilation system.

types MK, RK and XK
The sound attenuator splitters are supplied in one
piece. Like the type MS-OL or XS-OL, they can be
installed in rectangular ducts (provided by others)
with smooth plane-parallel walls

Additional assembly information for sound attenu-
ator splitters
Ensure that the splitter is installed without
vibration.
Sound attenuator splitters can be fixed e.g.,
with self-drilling screws (Fig. 25), min. 4.2 x 13
(DIN 7504) in sheet metal ducts.
Screw connections are to be sealed as
required.
A splitter installation in e.g. concrete ducts can
be carried out using guide rails. Splinters must
be fixed in position.
The installation of 2 sound attenuator splitters
on top of each other (e.g., in a duct casing) is
possible up to a total height of 5,000 mm (MK,
XK). The splitters are to be connected to each
other with clamp sheets and U-sheets

Subdivided sound attenuator splitter types MK,
RK and XK
Splitter constructions that are delivered divided due
to their dimensions are delivered with the necessary
joining material (U-sheets and clamp sheets,
enclosed in the package) for each order item.
Splinters are supplied in subdivided form if
MK / XK - H and L > 1500 mm or H + L >
4000 mm

Only one subdivision permissible, vertical installa-
tion in horizontal air duct

1. Join splitter joints together and connect with
2 U-sheets in a centred manner. Fixing
material provided by others. Rivet connec-
tion recommended, holes in splitter frames
to be provided by others.
2. Attach clamp sheets on both sides of the
splitters (fixing material, provided by others).
Quantity depends on Ä Table on page 14.
The clamp sheets are to be arranged in a
centred manner. If there are 2 clamp sheets
on each side, arrange them in a staggered
manner; a 500 mm distance between 2
clamp sheets is recommended.
