Function
The! UniPix! Atmos! Pipette! Accuracy! Tester!is! an!
instrument! for! precise! measurement! air!
displacement! pipette,! without! need! of! liquid.! It! is!
based!on!comparison!with!a!calibrated/internal/
reference/ cavity!in! the! instrument.! It! also!
measures!the!leak!rate!of!pipettes.!!

in/the/pipette/tip./!
This/will/permanently/damage/the/instrument./
Installation
The!package!contains!the!UniPix!Atmos!unit,!the!AC!
adapter! and! the! USB! cable! and! the! card!with! QR!
code!to!access!the!UniPix!ATMOS!web!page.!

Operation
Press! the! main! switch! on! the! back!of! the!
instrument!to!power!on.!
It! is! recommended! to! verify! that! the! instrument!
battery! is! well! charged! or! use/ the/ instrument/
with/ the/ external/ power/ supply!connected! via!
the!USB!cable.!
The! instrument! is! powered! by! an! internal! Li-ion!
battery!which! allows! continuously! operating!
during!about!1!hour.!
After!powering!on,!the!instrument!runs!a!self-test!
procedure! for! about! 10! seconds.!The! internal!
ventilator!turns!on!and!create!a!small!noise.!

Note:&The&instrument&goes&on&sleep&mode&if&not&used&
during&more&than&30&second.&Any&touch&to&the&screen&
reactivates&the&instrument.&

Pipette nominal size selection:
ATMOS! Nano! is! designed! for! testing! fixed! and!
variable!volume!pipettes!form!P1!to!P20!size.!

Enter! the! tested! dispense! volume! with! the! touch!
screen!and!then!press!"OK".!
The!"C"!button!erases!the!entered!number.!

• It&is&possible&to&run&the&test&without&entering&
a&volume.&

• If&the&instrument&is&used&test&volumes&larger&
than&20&µl,&the&measurement&accuracy&is&not&
valid.&

Tip insertion:
Insert!the!pipette!tip!in!the!center!of!the!tip!port!of!
the!instrument.!Hold!the!pipette!vertical!and!firmly!
press!the!tip!on!the!port.!!

When!the!tip!is!well!inserted!on!the!port,!press!de!
GO!arrow,!without!moving!the!pipette.!

• Keep& the& pipette& in& stable& position& during&

The! arrow! "ID"!at! the!bottom! right! of! the! screen!
allows!to!enter!date!and!pipette!ID!for!USB!transfer!
of!calibration!data!(see!"interfacing"!section).!

Measurement:
The!measurement!is!done!in!two!phases:!!
1. piston!pressed!(keep!about!5!seconds)!
2. piston!released!
!

1: Press phase:
Press!on! the! pipette! piston,! while! firmly! keeping!
the!tip!inserted!in!the!port.!The!displacement!of!the!
should!be!done!in!about!1!to!2!seconds.!
!
The!progress/bar!at!the!bottom!indicates!that!the!
instrument! is! measuring.! The/ pipette/ and/ the/
piston/ should/ not/ move/ during/ the/
measurement.!The!measurement!time!is!typically!
five!seconds.!
2: Release phase:
On! the! display! of! this! new! screen,! release!the!
piston,!but!don’t!remove!the!tip.!
!
Results:
The!calibration!result!is!displayed!at!the!end!of!the!
measurement!process.!
Displayed!parameters:!

Statistics:
The!measurements!can!be!repeated!several!times!
in!order!to!refine!statistical!accuracy.!!

I. It! is! recommended! to! take! at! least! 5!
measurements!in! order! to! have! good!
statistics!for!error!and!standard!deviation.!

II. After! moving! ATMOS! or! if! you! bring!
pipettes! from! another! room,! wait! 5!
minutes!before!making!the!calibration.!The!
system! is! sensitive! to! quick! temperature!
changes.!

III. ATMOS! in! compensated! for! temperature.!
The! calibration! values! correspond! to! the!
equivalent! gravimetric! measurements!at!
20°C!.!

IV. ATMOS! is! optimized! for! standard! conical!
tips.! If! you! perform! gravimetry!
measurements! with! long! tip! or! other!
special!shape,!the!values!related!to!ATMOS!

Interfacing ATMOS:
ATMOS! was! conceived! to! allow! transfer! of! the!
captured! results! to! any! computer! (Window,! Mac,!
Linux)! using! the! appropriate! software.!ATMOS!
microUSB! is! connected! to! the! industry! standard!
CP2102!from!Silicon!labs.!
!
Connection!is! read! as! a! serial! port! and!
communication!is!done!at!115200!bauds!using!the!
standard!ASCII!code.!
Commands!are!sent!as!a!single!ASCII!character!and!
will!be!interpreted!by!the!ATMOS!internal!parser.!
Upon! reception! of! a! meaningful! command! the!
device!will!issue!a!reply!followed!by!<CR/LF>!
!
Command/summary:/
The! first! set! of! commands! is! for! downloading!
measurement!data!from!Atmos!:!
l!Atmos! sends! a! string! of! characters! listing!
all! measurements! data! stored! in! the!
memory!
w!Erase!all!data!stored!in!the!memory!
z!Toggle! the! verbose! mode! on! and! off.! The!
verbose!mode!automatically!returns!all!the!
measurement! data! after! a! calibration!
sequence!
h!Help!command:!this!will!send!the!list!of!all!
available!commands!
!
The! second! set! of! commands! is! for! remote!
controlling! Atmos! for! operation! in! a! robotic!
platform!:!
a!After! receiving! this! command,! Atmos! will!
start!a!calibration!measurement!sequence!
with!the!stored!sequence!parameters.!The!
sequence!parameters!can!be!changed!with!
the!command!below.!(note:&this&function&is&
not&yet&fully&implemented)!
c!Enter!the!calibration!mode!
Soon!after!issuing!the!“c”!command,!Atmos!
will!send!the!single!character!“<”!indicating!
that! it! is! ready! to! read! the! pressure!
increase.! The! calibration! process! takes!
place!and!when!completed!Atmos!send!the!
single! character! “>”! indicating! that! the!
pressure!can!be!released.!

read! a! string! of! character! terminated! by!
<CR/LF>! used! to! set! the! timing! of! the!
calibration! sequence! (values! should! be!
between!2-10)!
v!Set! the! nominal! displacement! volume! (in!
microliters)! that! is! planned! to! be! tested.!

Maintenance
Cleaning
The! instrument! can! be! cleaned! with! a! dry! cloth.!
Never!spill!liquid!on!the!instrument.!
Dust! present! on! the! tip! port! might! be! source! of!
leakage!and!lead!to!improper!measurements.!The!
dust! should! be! carefully! removed! with! a! slightly!
humid!cloth.!Never!use!a!tweezer!because!this!can!
damage!permanently!the!port.!
Replacing the joint of the tip port
The!joint!of!the!tip!port!is!designed!to!work!several!
years!without!maintenance.!However,!in!the!case!of!
damage,!the!join!can!be!replaced!by!the!user.!Please!
carefully!follow!these!instructions:!
• Before! changing! the! joint,! order! the!
original!replacement!part!from!UniPix!web!
site!
• Unscrew!the!port!
• Remove!the!elastomer!joint!which!is!inside!
• Replace!by!the!new!joint!
• Tighten! the! port! (recommended! torque:!
0.2!Nm)!
